Revered on the left and respected on the right, Russ Feingold represented the state of Wisconsin from 1993 to 2011. During his tenure, he was one of only 23 sena- tors to vote against the Iraq War, and was the only senator to vote against the Patriot Act. Feingold was also the co- author of the well- known McCain- Feingold campaign reform bill which banned party soft money. In his new book, he explains where America went wrong after 9/11, and explores how the government and citizens alike can reverse our missteps through proposed solutions to the international problems that threaten America. Academy students who will be the

first class in the Mountain Campus

Program next fall were given a tour

recently of the Bensonwood facili-

ty by lead architect Randall Walter.

Randal and his team are design-

ing and building the Mountain

Campus academic building, which

will be a LEED Platinum, Net Zero

building with several unique archi-

tectural features that will enhance

the building’s use as a living class-

room and incorporate the environ-

ment both indoors and out.

Shown in the photo is one of the

four oak trees that will be used as

part of the interior deisng of the

building. Two of the oaks were har-

vested from the BBA campus by

alumni Josh Steere ’05 and Mark

Stevens ’01, who work for Joseph J.

Blair Tree Care. The other two

The Manchester and Dorset Historical Societies

will welcome a team of Long Trail School research-

ers, including teachers Scott Worland and David

Spero along with student Noah Lowenthal, on

Wednesday, April 25 at 7 p.m. at the school.

This event will showcase and explain five years

worth of information about the health of the

Mettowee River. The Mettowee plays an important

role in determining water quality in the lower por-

tion of Lake Champlain, and understanding the

health of the river is critical for economic, recre-

ational scenic values in the community.

The presentation will provide an overview of

the findings on the river’s health, and include a

report on the effects of Tropical Storm Irene.

Long Trail School collaborates with St.

Michael’s College to monitor water chemistry,

hydrology, and key organisms that are sensitive to

water quality. The collected data is maintained on

a database that is accessed by scientists in Vermont

and all over the country. Refreshments will be

served following the program.

Equinox Village will host “A

Summer Fashion Preview” at 3

p.m. on Friday, April 27 at Equinox

Village on 49 Maple Street in

Manchester Center. Local retail-

cherished photos, home movies,

Conquer,” a performance broad-

cast from the National Theatre of

Spring has just arrived, but it

is already time to register for the

popular summer camps at

Hildene in Manchester.

While some favorites such as

“Bug Bonanza” and “Nets,

Buckets and Boots,” are already

full, space is still available for sev-

eral other camps.

Manchester artist, designer

and educator Stacy Gates is offer-

ing two new art camps. The “Art

of Hildene” will be offered from

July 30 through August 3 for chil-

dren ages seven to eight, and from

August 6 to 10 for children ages

nine to 10. In this camp, children

will interpret the beauty of the

Lincoln family’s estate with

hands-on exploration of various

media. Painting, drawing, sculp-

ture, printmaking and historical

crafts are among the week’s fun-

filled art adventures. The week

will wrap up with a showcase of

the artists’ creations.

Other openings still exist in

“Farm Camps” (July 9 to 13 or

July 16 to 20) for children entering

grades two, three or four; “Wild

Survival” (July 23 to 27) for chil-

dren entering grades four, five or

six; “Watershed Wonders”

(August 13 to 17) for children

entering grades four, five or six;

and “Young at Art” (June 25 to 29)

for children ages five to six.

Hildene campers are encour-

aged to explore, experiment and

make his or her own discoveries

in a safe and friendly environ-

ment with the guidance of camp

staff. This summer’s staff

includes Diane Newton, Hildene

Director of Education; Rick

LaDue, Forest Steward, Equinox

Preservation Trust; Stacy Gates,

artist/educator; Lavinia Lowerre,

art educator; and Londonderry

small-scale farmer, Mimi Wright.

The camps are limited to 12

campers and are a week long.

Except for “Young at Art,” all

camps run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

and are held in the Lowerre

Family Youth Education Building.

The Board of Trustees of

Maple Street School has

announced the retirement of

long-time chair Janet Turnbull

Irving, effective April 1, 2012. Ms.

Irving’s stellar leadership and

vision in the creation and nur-

turing of Maple Street School for

the past 14 years will be honored

at several events this spring and

summer.

“We thank her for creating

many moments for many chil-

dren to let their future in through

the doors of Maple Street

School,” said Matthew

Samuelson, the board’s new

chair.

As chair of the board, Janet

Irving focused on achieving the

school’s mission for children to

fall in love with learning early

and be academically ambitious.

She spearheaded the campaign to

build the school’s current cam-

pus, created momentum for the

school’s annual fund for a needs-

based scholarship program, and

oversaw four strategic plans.

Maple Street Board of Trustees

for four years, and brings the

experience and personal quali-

ties that will help Maple Street

School to continue its mission.

The Merck Forest and

Farmland Center has announced

a new lineup of seasonally-

focused outdoor education pro-

grams for area schools.

“Our goal is to provide area

teachers with opportunities to

immerse their students in inqui-

ry and place-based learning,” said

Sarah Ullman, education director.

For the spring season, “The

Life Cycles of Livestock” encour-

ages students of all ages to visit

Merck’s flock of sheep and new

lambs. For grades pre-K through

four, the program will investigate

the life cycles of different farm

animals. Students will also visit

with new-born lambs and learn

all about them.

Students in grades five through

eight will learn to identify adapta-

tions that make sheep suitable for

grazing, while high school stu-

dents will investigate anatomy,

physiology and genetics.

Pre-K through eight classes

will last approximately one and a

half hours, and high school class-

es will last about three hours. For

SVAC hosts art

workshopWeston artist Chester

Kasnowski will host an art

workshop entitled “Glazing a

Still Life” on April 28 and 29

from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the

Southern Vermont Arts Center.

The old painting glazing

technique was used in the 15th

century as a way to create deep

colors and to hold parts of the

painting together for unity. In

this workshop, students will

learn how to use acrylic paint to

build layers of shape and color

and to tie the painting together

as whole. All skill levels are wel-

come.

Chester Kasnowski earned

degrees from the Dayton Art

Institute and Tulane University.

His works are in numerous pri-

vate collections as well as in

museums such as the Museum

of Modern Art, Guggenheim

Museum in New York City, and

the Tate Gallery in London. He

taught art for more than 30

years and was a curator of edu-

cation at the New Orleans

Museum of Art.

Dr. Redden is a political scien-

tist and an ordained Zen Buddhist

priest who believes that

Buddhism, a religion that seeks to

free ourselves of ego and selfish-

ness, can help us get beyond the

Left-Right divide. He will address

issues of ideology, ego, poverty,

healthcare, race, war, and the role

that silence and spirituality can

play in all political lives.
