How to Get Going with GrazingEating healthy is a goal for many people. For some,

altering what they eat easily sheds extra pounds and improves their overall health, while others fi nd changing what they eat isn't helping them reach their goals.

One option that has its share of supporters and detractors is grazing, which involves eating fi ve or six small portions throughout the day instead of three square meals per day. Supporters of grazing claim it keeps a person's metabolism going all day, helping to burn more calories while encouraging smaller portions. Those who question grazing point to studies questioning its effi cacy, namely that it does not have the calorie-burning effects its supporters suggest. In fact, researchers in the United Kingdom have said eating throughout the day undermines the body's ability to burn fat.

The debate over grazing will not go away anytime soon, but for those who want to give it a shot, consider the following advice.

• Choose healthy foods. Regardless of portion size, grazing is only effective if you choose healthy foods that are low in fat and high in nutrients. Avoid sugary foods, as well as those that are high in sodium. Proteins and complex carbohydrates, including chicken breasts, fi sh, low-fat dairy products and whole grains, will help you feel full until the next time to eat rolls around.

• Stick to a schedule. Meals should be eaten every three to four hours and if you stray from that schedule, you could wind up eating larger portions or more meals than necessary. Stick to your schedule and remember the portions are supposed to be small, so don’t feel skittish if you must pull out a snack at the offi ce or when company is at your house.

• Prepare meals in advance. A problem many people encounter when they fi rst begin to graze is the lack of availability of smaller-portioned meals and snacks because large, unhealthy choices are the norm when you’re outside of your home. Counter that problem by preparing meals in advance and taking them with you. Bring snacks with you to the offi ce so you aren't forced to eat unhealthy fare between meals.

• Recognize results aren't immediate. No effective weight loss plan produces results overnight and grazing is no exception. You will not drop 10 pounds in the fi rst week, but you might notice heightened energy levels throughout the day shortly after you begin to graze, especially when choosing the right foods. Give grazing enough time to get going before judging if it's the right approach for you.

The topic of grazing is one that continues to inspire debate, but men and women who want to lose weight and keep it off should consider grazing as a healthy and potentially effective option.

• Don't skip break-fast. A healthy break-fast is an essential element of success-ful grazing. If you skip breakfast, you're more likely to overeat, which could establish a domino effect of poor eating as the day continues. A bowl of cereal with fat-free or low-fat milk or some oatmeal with berries mixed in is all it takes to start the day off right.

Pros and Cons of Open Floor Plans Open fl oor plans have evolved to be the fl oor plan of choice

in new homes and current home renovations. Turn on a home renovation show and you're likely to see eager homeowners knocking down walls to open the kitchen to the family room. Walls have become anathema to homeowners.

There are many supporters of the open fl oor plan, particularly those who entertain frequently or like to keep an eye on children throughout the house. Although open fl oor plans are touted, there are plenty of people who have never been enamored with having all of their rooms fl owing into one. There also are some people who prefer a different style.

For those who are not fans of the open fl oor plan, blame the excess of the 1980s for their inception. In homes built in the 1960s and 1970s, rooms were compartmentalized and isolated for specifi c activities. During the 1980s, an era of "bigger is bet-ter," when entertaining was widely popular among homeowners, designers noticed that many homeowners preferred an open fl oor plan in which rooms merged into one another, creating the illusion of more space. These fl oor plans also enable people to be in separate rooms and still interact with one another across the space.

A home's fl oor plan largely depends on the preference of the homeowner. There are many advantages to having an open fl oor plan versus one that is more compartmentalized. Here is a look at some of the pros and cons.

Pro: Open fl oor plans can be safer for parents of young chil-dren. If the home opens up with the living spaces branching off from the kitchen, parents can keep an eye on children while the parents prepare dinner. It also eliminates the number of places that kids can hide and get into mischief.

Con: Privacy is reduced in a home with few walls. Much in the way that an open fl oor plan enables children to be seen from every angle, it also enables you to be seen — and all of your belongings as well. There's also no place to retreat to if you need a minute to collect yourself when entertaining. You're on display unless you retreat to the bathroom.

Pro: Entertaining can be easier in a home with an open fl oor plan because hosts and hostesses are not separated from their guests or holed up in the kitchen the entire time. An open space enables everyone to mingle and conversations to fl ow.

Con: Those who like to host events without showing guests all of their dirty dishes or secrets of the kitchen may dislike an open fl oor plan.

Pro: Light can fl ow effectively through an open space, minimiz-ing dark rooms and reducing the need to install more windows. Light in and of itself can help a home feel more spacious.

Con: While light can fl ow easily, so can sound. Noises through the house may be amplifi ed. A student doing homework in the dining room may be disturbed by the television blaring in the family room. Talking on the phone or even fi nding a quiet nook to read a book may be challenging.

Pro: Open fl oor plans allow for more family time together in one space than a home with a more compartmentalized layout.

Con: People who are collectors or who have a lot of furniture or accent items may fi nd that open fl oor plans do not work well with this type of design mantra.

Pro: Because several rooms run into one another, color choices for walls and furnishings in a home with an open fl oor plan can be limited and cohesive, making choices easier.

Con: On the fl ip side, those who want to incorporate different color schemes and eclectic styles may have diffi culty deciding on where to "end" rooms or how to co-mingle furniture.

One in fi ve people in the U.S. has some sort of learning disability, such as dyslexia, yet experts say that for many children, the problem remains undiagnosed far longer than it should. Recognizing the early signals of such learning differences can be extremely important for a child’s success in school and life. If caught at the early stages, the proper steps can be made to ensure that it doesn’t progress without being helped.

Pediatric Neuropsychologist Nichole Dawson, Ph.D., has a son with dyslexia and has teamed up with Learning Ally, a national nonprofi t, to inform the public about dyslexia’s early warning signs, advising parents on what they need to look for in order to catch it.

Dr. Dawson recommends watching your child to see if he or she has diffi culty with the following things:

• learning the alphabet, identifying letters and/or processing letter-sound relationships;

• learning nursery rhymes, preschool songs, the days of the week and/or the months of the year;

• learning to count and recognize numbers;• reading out loud (slow, “choppy” and error prone);• learning vocabulary, names of people and places.

Dyslexia: Warning SignsAnd Solutions

Get An Expert EvaluationIf a child is exhibiting some of these symptoms, an

evaluation by an expert in dyslexia and reading impairments can be extremely helpful. School psychologists, pediatric neuropsychologists, educational therapists and speech language pathologists are among the types of professionals who are qualifi ed to provide a clear diagnosis.

Dr. Dawson advises parents not to delay testing. There is no harm in getting your child checked, just to be safe. “Studies show that a child’s reading skill level at the end of kindergarten is predictive of where his or her reading skills will be in third grade,” she says. “After diagnosis, supports and accommodations can help children with learning differences succeed academically.”

One proven accommodation she points to is Learning Ally, which provides struggling readers with access to their curriculum via audio textbooks. Learning Ally makes reading accessible for everybody and since they opened, have been partnering with those who learn differently to ensue both academic and lifelong success.

“Learning Ally is remarkably effective for individuals with dyslexia, as well as other reading or learning challenges,” Dawson says. “It’s library of 75,000 digital titles — the largest of its kind in the world — can be played on everyday devices, including PCs, Macs, iPhones and iPads.”

Learning Ally’s website offers robust support to parents and even provides a directory for fi nding specialists near your home.

Successful intervention can reduce academic frustration and minimize the negative impact of dyslexia on a child’s learning success. All it takes is the right tools and your child won’t have to struggle through years of learning and reading in school. Frustration may continue to build if dyslexia is not detected and treated early.

To learn more, visit LearningAlly.org/DyslexiaSigns.Experts have found that early detection and intervention can

be extremely benefi cial for children who are showing signs of dyslexia.

Splurge1 Albertson Avenue, Albertson(516) 277-2565, splurgestore.com

Splurge has the latest clothing styles and fashionable accessories for women in their twenties, forties and even sixties. What began as a small, one-clothing-rack busi-ness in 2010 has grown into a beautiful boutique that customers love returning to for new outfi ts.

Gayle Hatchett, founder and co-owner, said, “Splurge is the perfect place to get a hot outfi t for Saturday night or a pair of jeans and a sweater for the day. Our style is clas-sic, with an edgy twist. We carry the traditional cashmere sweater, but with a fun or cool design on the back.”

Splurge sells high-end brands and carries special lines that are exclusive to their location in Albertson. Customers are able to buy unique clothing and Gayle, along with her co-founder and best friend, Betsy Rosen-thal, doesn’t let customers leave their store unless their purchases look good on them.

“Our customers are repeat customers, because the experience at Splurge is very, very personable,” said Gayle. “We never send someone out of the store with anything just to make a sale. We help them shop and make sure they look good in what they’re buying. By the time our customers leave the store, we know everything about them and they always come back.”

Splurge specializes in the hottest styles and has grown increasingly successful due to its exclusive piec-es. Gayle and Betsy strive to fi nd the “right” clothes and help customers bring a special fl air to their wardrobe. “We have fabulous styles at great quality and there is always a large selection of jewelry and accessories to compliment every outfi t,” said Gayle.

For women trying to revamp their style, “Splurge girls” love to go to customer’s homes and help them get rid of clothing they no longer like and donate it. Free of charge, they help customers decide which pieces to toss and which to keep. “Customers love the personal experience they get from us during these home shopping visits. Af-terwards, they receive gift cards to buy new clothes and replenish their wardrobe,” said Gayle.

For customers with busy schedules who fi nd it diffi cult to visit Splurge during standard hours, Gayle and Betsy will open their doors for an individualized, private shop-ping experience. Customer service is a top priority at this clothing and accessories boutique and that has resulted in loyal customers and incredible success.

Exciting and gorgeous new styles are arriving for the spring collection and leftover winter items are discounted for the Winter Blowout Sale. Little leather jackets will be a staple spring item, according to Gayle, who said she and Betsy are always into leather — a huge trend that is always “in.”

After working together with a different company, Gayle and Betsy knew that they had a knack for fashion and helping women channel their inner fashionistas. An en-thusiastic Gayle explained, “We love it! We keep growing more successful because we love what we do!”

Nubon Sushi and Grill 294 North Broadway, Hicksville(516) 681-9800, nubonsushi.com.

The colorful fl ags of Nubon Sushi and Grill catch my attention every time I drive down Broadway, in Hicksville. Finally, one night I decided to see what all the hype was about. I entered a peaceful, warm, Japanese restaurant, fi lled with customers indulging in over twenty selections of Japanese dishes. I wondered how I would ever choose what to eat, but the “All you can eat” option for $19.99 per person made my evening very easy.

An attentive waiter handed my friends and I a small sheet of paper with appetizer, salad, tempura, noodle, meat entrée, sashimi, sushi roll and dessert selections. We simply checked off what we wanted to eat and he

us funny. The answer came around the seventh order. “Oh my! More?”, he said with a smile, as we laughed and said it was too good to stop.

We devoured the miniscule, endless portions of BBQ skewers with chicken, beef and grilled eggplant, as well as miso soups and seaweed salads. The fried calamari had a distinct taste different of that from an Italian restaurant, and came without marinara sauce — different, but delightful. Six thin strips of teriyaki chicken was only one order, so after about seven of those, we moved on from the deliciously glazed meat and stared at the sushi list.

Choices included salmon, red snapper, crab, mackerel, tofu skin and white eel, but the sushi rolls were more to our liking. The shrimp tempura roll was crunchy and sweet, while the California roll was as delicious as expected. To the right of our table, we were able to see our sushi being made and it tasted just as fresh as it looked.

The Special Rolls are what makes Nubon the No. 1 place to go for “All You Can Eat Sushi’’, as I have been seeing quite a few of these places popping up around the community. Always a favorite of mine, I checked off the Dragon Roll, with avocado and BBQ sauce, and they did not skimp on the sauce at all. Atop the Rainbow Roll lied pieces of tuna, salmon, hamachi and crab, that were larger than the roll itself. Inside the Alaska Roll was raw salmon, which is as close to real sushi as we would get, but it was a great start.

If you are looking for a different, exotic roll, the one topped with a piece of grilled cheese and shrimp was perfection and the reason why I need to return to Nubon right away. None of us could get enough. We regretted being too full to try Sushi Pizza, Cream Cheese California Rolls, Avocado Peanut Rolls and Fried Calamari Rolls, but that will have to wait for next time. And not all of those were included in the “All You Can Eat” option.

Nubon is perfect for anyone who can’t get enough sushi, as well as for people who need to try a little bit of everything to fi nd out what they like; it is all served on a large dish to share. Don’t like sushi? Enjoy all the meat, soups and desserts you want!

Nubon is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner and offers their “All You Can Eat” option for $21.99 on the weekends, as well.

continued to bring us food, as long as we fi nished what we had previously ordered. I didn’t think I would ever want to leave, but thankfully, there was a two-hour time limit.

Everything came in small portions and my friends and I wondered how much we would have to order until the waiter started to look at
