Mrs Brown TownContinued from page 1

Last year hundreds of locals donned Mrs Brown garb in an at-tempt to set a record for having the most Agnes Browns in one place at the same time but this year the centrepiece of the Agnes Fest was a Mrs Brown dance-off.

Sides were splitting as Mrs Brown lookalikes dressed up in rollers, cardigans and aprons squared off and shook their wob-bly bits at each other in an effort to out-manoeuvre their dance rivals.

There was plenty more over the weekend to keep festival visitors entertained with performances from talented locals including youngsters from FYRC and many singers and musicians.

Local lifesavers from Finglas

Northside property prices still increasingContinued from page 1

Between April and June, aver-age list prices rose in five of six regions in Dublin, with Dublin City Centre seeing a 1.3 per cent rise. The biggest increase was seen in the North City area, with list prices up by 2.2 per cent.

In the City Centre area, list prices increased by 1.7 per cent year-on-year while in the North County area they are up by 1.5 per cent.

The most expensive average list prices for homes north of the Lifey are in the North City at €286,257 compared to €268,361 in the North County and €253,520 in the City Centre.

Prices on the Southside have increased by less, with the South City and West County (also in-cluding Dublin 15) up by one per cent and actually down by 1.6 per cent in the South County.

The Daft.ie report highlights a divide between Dublin and the rest of the country where prices are rising at a significantly in-creased average of 10.2 per cent.

Commenting on the report, Ronan Lyons, Assistant Professor in Economics at TCD, said that na-tionwide, the overall dynamic in the housing market currently is one of very strong demand pull-ing up prices.

Some of the participants in the Agnes Fest. PHOTO: DARREN KINSELLA▪

Responders gave first aid dem-onstrations on the Friday of the festival, and also covered the medical side of the event.

There was also a mini parade during which motorcycle riders from Blue Daos LEMC escorted the new Miss Finglas and the Lord Mayor of Finglas through the streets.

The festival also had prizes galore, donated by local busi-nesses including vouchers from

Charlestown Shopping Centre and a weekend away for the win-ner of the Agnes Dance-Off from Salveta’s takeaway.

As well as providing fun and laughter over the weekend, the festival also managed to raise over €3,000 for its nominated charity, which is helping to get treatment for youngster Ben ‘Batman’ Farrell who was diag-nosed with a rare childhood can-cer last year.

“The obvious exception to this is Dublin, where Central Bank rules have linked house prices to the real economy,” he continued.

“What we are seeing in the capital is buyers seeking out good-value locations.

“The strongest price growth is being seen currently in previous-ly unfashionable postcodes – the market’s judgement not mine! - such as Dublin 10, 12, 17 and 24.

“At the other end of the spec-trum, five of the most expensive areas of the city are seeing prices fall: Dublin 2, 6, 16, 18 and South County Dublin.”

In a separate report, MyHome.ie put asking prices for newly listed properties in Dublin during the second quarter of the year up by 3.6 per cent – four times high-er than the 0.9 per cent reported in the first quarter.

Local man flying the flag for mixed martial artsDaniel O’Connor

CONOR McGregor may be today’s poster boy for mixed martial arts in Ireland, but it was his sparring partner and trainer Owen Roddy who flew the flag for the sport before him.

A former Cage Contender Featherweight champion, the Ballymun man fought around the world as Ireland’s leading mixed martial artist at a time when the sport was virtually unknown.

After fighting for over a de-cade and accumulating a record of 11-4, he decided to retire in 2013 before he got a chance to

FIGHTING FIT: Conor McGregor pictured with local man Owen Roddy.▪compete in the world’s premier MMA organisation, the UFC – this was mainly due to the promotion not having Roddy’s weight class for most of his career.

These days, Roddy spends his time breeding a new genera-tion of mixed martial artists at his own gym, SBG Charlestown, something he says played a sig-

nificant part in his decision to retire.

“I felt that when I was prepar-ing for my own fights, the gym and the other fighters were suf-fering as a result,” Roddy says. “I wanted to be able to put 100 per cent into them.”

Roddy now balances his time coaching martial artists of all

skill levels, along with training with some of the country’s elite, including UFC Featherweight champion Conor McGregor.

‘The Notorious’ is scheduled to fight Nate Diaz once again at UFC 202 on August 20, clearing up the confusion caused by his recent dispute with UFC bosses.

Speaking to Northside People,

Roddy recalled McGregor’s first day at the gym and says he im-mediately realised there was something special about him.

Roddy says he wants to use his position as one of the country’s most respected MMA coaches to help young people in local com-munities.

“We’re located right near Finglas and Ballymun here,” he adds. “We want to get kids off the streets and get them training, teach them discipline, set them goals and help them achieve them.”

According to Roddy, it is clear

from rising attendances at gyms and the number of events be-ing held in Ireland that it is only a matter of time before MMA is fully recognised and embraced by the Irish sporting community.

While MMA continues to grow in popularity, it’s clear that Rod-dy will continue to be instrumen-tal in developing Ireland’s next batch of world-class fighters.

SBG is located at 3B Century Business Park, St Margaret’s Road, Charlestown, Finglas. It can be contacted on 085-7145233. You can also check out their Facebook page.

We, in Northside People, rank down the pecking order in terms of the impact of this scandal. But this newspaper and our sister newspapers in Celtic Media Group have been very proactive supporters of Console over the past two years, primarily through providing substantial amounts of advertising on a pro bono basis alongside editorial and photographic coverage to promote the Helpline over the key Christmas period, when so often dark thoughts can invade the minds of vulnerable people.

Last Christmas, for example, an average of 185 people per day contacted the Console Helpline number of 1800 247 247 during the holiday period and a total of 4,116 rang during

the month of December 2015 itself. There were also many text messages sent – primarily by young men – to the text Helpline 51444.

Impossible to know, but for all the sad news stories about suicide – and each of those has associated and permanent stories of sadness in the lives of those left behind – there are countless more untold stories of those who have been helped by Console and other such organisations to the extent that they have moved from a dark place to a brighter place in their thoughts.

Northside People was approached initially by a respected business partner of ours who felt that the scale of suicide in Ireland – both in urban and rural locations – was reaching epidemic proportions. He suggested that we meet with Paul Kelly and hear of the work being carried out in Console and we have been very enthusiastic supporters even since, doing our bit to ensure that the tragedy of suicide is kept from the door of as many families as possible.

The lessons to be learnt among those with a regulatory responsibility and those dispensing taxpayers’ funding to such agencies are stark. There clearly has been too much trust and not enough verification allowed for the

We all feel let down by Console scandal

Northside People comment

THERE are many people who can with legitimacy feel very let down by what has been revealed about the shocking

dearth of corporate governance and internal controls within the suicide awareness and prevention charity, Console.

Chief among those are the clients of the service and those who work – both on an unpaid and paid basis – for the organisation. Also, the hundreds of people who have worked to fundraise for the charity in a country where our faith in such organisations has been severely dented over recent years.

These people have had their trust and sense of decency impugned by what has been learned through the media and HSE reports about the spending habits and apparent cavalier lifestyle engaged in by the former Console chief executive, Paul Kelly, and some members of his family.

Disgraced Console founder Paul Kelly▪

There clearly has been too much trust and

not enough verification allowed for the smiling Mr Kelly

smiling Mr Kelly. It is imperative now that the

reputation of those charitable organisations which operate in a fully transparent manner is not besmirched

by this very distasteful episode. We, in Northside People, will always be found willing to support good causes. However, we will be a lot more questioning the next time around.

Local pupilsget green fingers INSPIRING youth

participation in community gardens isn’t always the most

glamorous of jobs says Global Action Plan’s (GAP) horticulturist, Sharon Harvey, but if this year’s strawberry crop is anything to go by, all the early, and often rainy starts, will have been worth it!

Sharon and the GAP team have been working with local schools over the last 10 weeks, giving them the practical skills to begin to grow their own produce

And they’ve heaped praise on the pupils and teachers of Virgin Mary Boys NS, Gaelscoil Bhaile Munna, Ballymun, and St Fergals Boys NS, Finglas, for all of their hard work this semester.

The groups will return to the community gardens for the most important part of the programme in September – Harvest! They have planted and nurtured potato plants, onions, courgettes, beans, beetroots,

lettuces and strawberries.Sharon’s strong focus on

biodiversity not only highlights where our food comes from, but how we can care for the wildlife that supports our agriculture and environment. The pupils also created a weather station and made bird feeders.

“The young people bring lots of fun and energy to the gardens,” explains Sharon. “The Virgin Mary pupils planted a rose bush for one of their teachers who had passed away. It was touching to watch them care for the plant over the weeks.”

GAP’s Youth Gardening Programme has been funded by Dublin City Council. Sharon is always willing to help local community groups to get involved in GAP’s community gardens.

She is also leading a family biodiversity workshop on August 25 from 1-3pm in the Virgin Mary Community Garden, Shangan Road, Ballymun. To book a free place call Sharon or the GAP team on 01-883 2185.

Project could end Mulhuddart floodingIRISH Water has begun site investigation works for a proposed €30 million project that will help prevent uncontrolled overflows at River Tolka and flooding in Mulhuddart.

The work at Tolka Valley will be carried out along part of the proposed route for the Blanchardstown Regional Drainage Scheme.

Wastewater infrastructure is currently under capacity for the area, which can cause extensive flooding at Mulhuddart.

The new project involves 3.2km of pipeline, construction of underground storage tanks to increase capacity in the network, a new pumping station and a control building.

The site investigation works are expected to take six weeks to complete and will involve trial hole excavations, borehole drilling and geophysical mapping.

Dublin West TD and Minister for Social Protection, Leo Varadkar, has welcomed the plans and is seeking assurance that Tolka Valley Park will be fully re-instated when works are complete.

“The works are designed to put an end to flooding in Mulhuddart,” he added.

Irish Water intends to submit a planning application for the proposed project by the end of the year.

Luas Cross City worksWORKS on the Luas Cross City line will cause the clo-sure of the right-turn from Parnell Square East to Par-nell Street from July 12-29.

A number of diversions are being put in place to facilitate access to Parnell Street, west of O’Connell Street.

Traffic on Parnell Square North should now continue straight through the junction with North Fredrick Street and Parnell Square East and onto Gardiner Row.

Traffic coming from Tem-ple Street should continue straight through the junction with Gardiner Place and onto Hill Street.

Traffic accessing from Gar-diner Place should turn left onto Hill Street.

Diversion signs will be in place for the duration of the works.

Minister launches 1916 exhibition in Hill StreetMINISTER for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr Katherine Zappone, said there’s no place for racism in Dublin’s North Inner City during the recent launch of a major photograph-ic exhibition celebrating diver-sity.

‘Cherishing all of the children of the Nation equally 1916-2016’ features photographs of local families living around Hill Street and the highlights changes that have occurred in the local com-munity over the past 100 years.

The exhibition is a cross gen-erational, multi-cultural photog-raphy exhibition, funded by Dub-lin City Council, commemorating 1916 through the production of a visual record of the changing face of families living in the local community.

Over the course of three days, Jeanette Lowe, a photographic artist, took 48 family portraits from 18 different nationalities for the exhibition.

Launching the exhibition at

the Hill Street Family Resource Centre Minister Zappone said: “This hugely positive event in a community which is the true home of the rising sends out the message that we believe in inclu-sion and diversity, not division, racism and hatred.”

“Family life in Ireland is be-coming more diversified. Some 27 different nationalities avail of the services of Hill Street, and it is right that it should be the host of the exhibition by photogra-pher Jeanette Lowe.”

The minister praised the work of Hill Street Family Resource Centre, which she said supported families with childcare as well as providing training opportunities and counselling to get people through difficult times.

She also encouraged Northsid-ers to visit the exhibition so they could be inspired “not just about the future of this community but the future of our country”.

“The heroes of 1916 had a vi-sion of a country with equality, fairness and justice – here just a

short distance from the GPO we are recapturing that vision,” she added.

“All of our families and chil-dren should be cherished equal-ly – no matter what their back-

ground. “It is what our forefathers in

1916 would have wanted.”The launch was followed by a

multicultural family fun day with entertainment, arts and crafts

and outdoor sport activities for both children and parents.

The exhibition at the centre is open to the public on Wednes-days and Thursdays from 10am-12pm and 2-4pm until August 12.

Sea voyage for Ballymun teenJack O’Toole

SOCIAL support agency Cross-care teamed up with Sail Training Ireland earlier this month to help launch a cross channel sailing initiative that took youths from disadvan-taged Northside areas across the Irish Sea.

As part of the joint sailing venture known as the ‘three cit-ies initiative’, dozens of young people aged 18-25 departed from Belfast City harbour before embarking on a seven day round trip that included stops in Scot-land, the Isle of Man, Liverpool and Dublin.

Ballymun native Noel Proud-foot was one of the lucky candi-dates selected to take part in the challenge and after his first week at sea, the 18-year-old said it was a ‘life-changing experience’ for him.

“I’ve never been out at sea or anything like that, never mind a tall ship, so that was a like a

change but it was just unreal,” Proudfoot told Northside Peo-ple.

“It was ten times better than I expected and the views were un-real. We had seven days of lovely weather and it was great the way the whole thing came about.

“When we got there we had no idea what we were doing and then when you were actually out at sea, it was actually you who was making the boat move, it was mad.

“It was much better than wak-ing up and looking at other hous-es in a housing estate and you’re just waking up and you’re look-ing out at the ocean. I’d advise anyone to do it.”

Although the event was large-ly supported and funded by city councils in Dublin, Belfast and Liverpool, Sail Training Ireland also played a significant role in the practical side of the expedi-tion.

Organisation manager Michael Byrne said that the charity has been up and running since 2011

and that changing the mind-set of young people is a big goal for the organisation.

“I suppose the most important thing with us is this isn’t really about learning to sail necessarily, it’s more about learning to work together,” Byrne told Northside People.

“It can change people’s per-spective.

“Some people come down and they’re really unsure and they haven’t had too many opportu-nities in life, and you can make a very small spark of a change in their mind-set and in the way they look at the world, and how they interact with the world.

“They can look back on it 20 years later and say ‘wow that was probably a fork in the road for me.”

Sail Training Ireland run doz-ens of voyages every year for teenagers and adolescents 15 years or older.

To get in contact visit www.sailtrainingireland.com or call 01-8559597.Noel Proudfoot from Ballymun pictured during his sea adventure.▪

Work to begin on schoolCONTRACTORS have been ap-pointed for construction of a new 12 classroom primary school and associated site works for Gaels-coil Bhaile Munna, in Coultry.

THe long-awaited works are due to commence this week and the news has been welcomed by local councillor, Noeleen Reilly (SF).

“At long last parents and chil-dren can breathe a sigh of relief,” she said.

“It has taken over 24 years of campaigning from the local com-munity for a new school.

“It feels like we have been wait-ing forever for this news as we have had many false starts.”

Meanwhile, planning permis-sion has been granted to extend St Michael’s House, Special National School in Glasnevin.

Works include demolition of ex-isting prefabricated units, boiler house and storage out building and construction of a new single storey extension to three separate areas of the existing school build-ing.

The work is expected to cost around €820,000.

“I welcome this news and I hope the tender process is not too lengthy and works can commence in the very near future,” said Cllr Reilly.

Be aware that hot cars can kill dogs

pets no.1For all DuBlin

reaDersHiP

iT’s so important that dogs are not left in cars on hot days, even for a few minutes in the shade with the windows open.

Leaving the windows ajar actually does very little to lower the temperature inside the car and just a few minutes in a hot car can prove fatal for a dog.

Dogs have a very small amount of sweat glands, add to this the fact that they are covered in fur and it is easy to understand why they are prone to overheating rapidly in warm environments.

By following seven essential safety tips for keeping your dog happy and healthy in the heat, you can ensure that your dog is safe on and off the road this summer:

1. Never leave him in the car in warm weather, even if it feels cool outside.

2. Always take the keys with you even if you are just running back into the house to get something.

3. Consider using a car sunblind to provide shade and carry a ready supply of water at all times.

4. Avoid long car journeys in hot weather, if you need to travel, avoid the heat of the day.

5. Apply pet sun cream to easily burned areas: nose, ears, eyelids and belly. Please don’t use human sun cream - it can be toxic to dogs, so visit your local pet shop and get one that is made specifically for dogs.

6. Be extra vigilant with older and over-weight dogs as they are more prone to overheating. In a real emergency wet your dog thoroughly and use a household fan to blow cool air over his head and body. Seek urgent veterinary attention!

7. If your dog takes a dip in a lake or pool make sure you rinse him as soon af-terwards as possible (perhaps keep a five litre drum of tap water in your car for this purpose). Never allow your dog to drink from ponds unless the water is clear as algae in the water can produce toxins that are rapidly fatal.

If your dog shows any signs of distress such as excessive panting, blueness of the tongue or collapse in the heat contact your vet urgently.

If you are present at the rescue of a dog from a hot car that is clearly in distress, seek immediate veterinary advice.

Dampening the dog down with cool (but not freezing) water or cool wet towels

will help to start bring down their body temperature.

It is always a good idea to have your local veterinary practice’s phone number in your phone and most importantly, their out of hours emergency contact number.

Hopefully you will never have to use it but it can save vital time for your dog should the need arise.

Leaving the windows slightly open actually does very little to lower the temperature inside a car.

Grooming your dog is an import-ant part of dog ownership and it also helps to create a bond between you and your beloved canine. Dogs need some mainte-nance help to look and feel their very best.

Coat Brushing - most dogs love to be brushed and grooming will help strengthen the bond with your dog while maintaining a healthy shiny coat. A dog’s brushing needs depend on their coat type and it is important to use the right tools. Bristle brushes work well for most hair types and there are brushes available for long hair and to break up tangles and mats.

Bathing - Most dogs should be bathed every 4-6 weeks. Always

use a soap-free shampoo that is intended for use on dogs. Depending on the condition of your dog’s skin and coat there are various shampoos to choose from.

Haircuts - dogs such as Shih Tzu, Poodle or Bichon need their hair cut every 2-4 weeks. This task is often best left to professional groomers.

Ear Care - a dog’s ears can be a haven for bacteria and yeast if not kept clean. If your dog’s ears are relatively clean and healthy you can help keep them that way with monthly cleaning using specically designed wipes and drops.Visit www.petworlddirect.ie for more training tips.

and immediately felt as ease.“What I love about Slimming

World is that you can just be yourself,” says Marian. “The groups are so compassionate and there is no judgement what-soever. It’s a very comfortable place to be in. “I never felt alone from the day I joined. The Food

Optimising Plan is so easy to fol-low. When I started it I thought it was too good to be true.

“I batch cook Slimming World recipes one morning every two weeks and freeze my meals so I always have healthy homemade choices at the ready.

“I love a gin and slimline tonic with fresh berries and lemon in it and I can still enjoy these. One of my favourite treats I still get to enjoy is a meringue nest with passion fruit and mango jelly, fresh berries and cream on top.”

Marian has embarked on a new journey having just returned from the Slimming World Acad-

emy where she trained as a consultant.

She will re-launch a group on Thursday, July 14 at St Sylvester’s Parish Centre in Malahide. The first session starts at 5.30pm and the second at 7.30pm.

“I want to give people the chance I had and show them the same welcome and support that I received when I joined,” Marian adds.

“I want people to realise that no matter how many times you’ve tried to lose weight and no matter what life throws at you, you really can have an enjoyable healthy lifestyle for the rest of your life.”

Contact Marian on 087-2079092 for any further queries.

Funds are raised for FoundationFOR the fifth consecutive year, Harvey Norman supported the Marie Keating Foundation through its Sleep Pink cam-paign which ran in stores na-tionwide.

During the campaign a per-centage of the sales of selected bedding products including mat-tresses, divans and pillows was donated to the Foundation. Cus-tomers were also invited to do-nate to the foundation by ‘Adding a Euro’ to their purchase amount at the checkout.

The total amount raised during the 2015 campaign amounted to over €23,000.

Robbie Auckram, general man-ager for Harvey Norman Bed-ding, said: “Sleep is essential for our health and we are delighted to have supported the Marie Ke-ating Foundation with our Sleep Pink campaign for the fifth year.

“I would like to thank our ter-rific staff, customers and suppli-ers for their support in making this campaign possible.”

Harvey Norman has raised over €120,000 for the Marie Ke-ating Foundation since 2011.

Marian aims to help others lose weight

In the first 12 weeks of joining Jillian and the Kilmore/Beaumont Group she lost 2.5 stones.

She had severe osteoporosis and due to the healthy lifestyle changes with both her food and walking daily, and her medita-tion, she has managed to reverse the condition to a milder form of osteopenia.

Struggling with her weight for most of her life, having tried ev-ery weight loss organisation and diet on the market and dealing with many family tragedies over the years, Marian turned to food for comfort.

She was devastated when she lost her brother-in-law, only 35, due to cancer. Then her Dad, after a totally unexpected very short illness, died of a heart at-tack, aged 66.

Utter devastation hit her fam-ily again a year later when her seven-year-old niece passed away due to leukaemia.

Her family was sent into a whirlwind when two of her sisters and her younger brother were diagnosed with multiple brain aneurysms. All three of needed life-threatening open brain sur-geries.

“With all the devastation in the family, food was turned to every time,” says Marian.

When she and her family were just about recovering from the after effects, it was revealed two of her sisters were suffering from breast cancer, shortly followed by the same diagnosis for her dear Mum.

While her sisters and brother made a full recovery from their illnesses, Marian’s mum sadly passed away only nine months ago.

”It was something Mum had said to me when she was ill about losing weight and to look after myself that prompted me to join Slimming World, something I could be in control of,” says Mar-ian.

When she opened the door at Slimming World, she saw a friendly scene of men and wom-en standing and sitting around drinking cups of tea. She was wel-comed by Jillian, the consultant,

MARIAN Manning (55), a dog trainer from Santry, has changed her life by losing three stones and three pounds with Slimming World.

A host of celebrities are throwing their name into the ring for Chris Evans’ job on ‘Top Gear’.

The radio DJ announced his departure from presenting the hit show after just one season.

Jenson Button, Tinie Tempah, Jodie Kidd and Ellie Golding are just some of the names putting themselves forward.

It’s thought that Chris won’t be replaced but that Matt LeBlanc will continue with the show.

I must say I love Matt on it - as long as he doesn’t leave I’ll keep watching!

Barry told us his new music will be biographical. Interesting.

Speculation is rife that the Taylor Swift/Tom Hiddleston romance could actually be made up!

Fans have taken to social media to say they’re not convinced the two are really together; instead, they think the couple are actually putting on a performance for a new music video.

They reckon the romance is fake, and all footage of them together will be used in a video for Taylor’s next single. Given the speed of their ‘relationship’, it would make some sense!

That’s it from me. Until next week

It will be a Green day at Leopardstown

HERMITAGE Green released their debut studio album ‘Save Your

Soul’ in March this year. After shooting to Number 3 in the Irish Album Charts, the band delivered on their great song-writing potential having wowed audiences around the world since they formed in 2010. Their unique arrangement of instruments that includes the bodhrán, djembe, rhythmic guitar and banjo sets them apart as a truly original offering of Irish music.

Having already seen Aslan, The Academic, Nathan Carter and Jack L play the racecourse stage, Hermitage Green are next up when they play Bulmers Live At Leopardstown this Thursday July 14, followed by Booka Brass Band (July 21), The Strypes (August 4), The Boomtown Rats (August 11).

As always, the performances will be preceded by a top class card of horse racing and a wide selection of hospitality options available for everyone from the great value ‘Summer Bundle’ to the premium ‘Summer Party’. The music and racing festival would not be complete with-out the Style Stakes. The Beacon Hotel will return this summer as sponsors of The Beacon Hotel Dare to be Different Style Awards with over €17,000 worth of prizes to be won. Every week at Bulmers Live at Leopardstown, over €2,000 worth of prizes can be won by contestants, who will be judged by a high profile panel of personalities and celebrities.

A real Rock ‘n Roll classic arrives in DublinSINCE its first appearance at the Royal Court Theatre in June 1973, Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show has become the world’s favourite Rock N’ Roll musical.

It has been performed worldwide for over 40 years in over 30 countries and has been translated into more than 20 languages. Director Christopher Luscombe created a stunning new production to celebrate the 40th Anniversary and this critically acclaimed version of the classic show is back by popular demand after embarking on a year-long national adventure starting at

Brighton’s Theatre Royal on December 17, 2015.

This musical extravaganza features all of its famous musical classics including ‘Science Fiction/Double Feature’, ‘Dammit Janet’ and of course, the timeless floor-filler, ‘The Time-Warp’.

The Rocky Horror Show was first performed on June 19, 1973 at the Royal Court Theatre and continues to break box office records around the world, currently selling out in Australia, Germany, Switzerland, Japan and Austria.

It tells the story of Brad and his fiancée Janet, two squeaky clean college kids who meet Dr Frank’n’Furter by chance

when their car breaks down outside his house while on their way to visit their former college professor. It is an adventure they’ll never forget, with fun, frolics, frocks, and frivolity, bursting with timeless songs and outrageous outfits.

Many stars, including Russell Crowe, Tim Curry, Jerry Springer and Meatloaf have appeared in The Rocky Horror Show over the past four decades. Ready to thrill you with fun and naughty moments, O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show is the boldest bash of them all. Be warned, this show has rude parts! It’s on at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre from October 3 to 8.

TRACK RECORD WITH BARRY MURPHY FROM HERMITAGE GREEN

1. Best gig you’ve been to in Dublin?

The public lynching of Cat Stevens in the 3 Arena in 2009 was pretty incredible. After that Metallica in 2002 in RDS was class.

2. Most memorable moment in Dublin?

Munster beating Leinster in Landsdowne Road in 2006.

3. Most ‘want to forget’ moment in Dublin?

Again, Cat Stevens AKA Yusef Islam at the 3 arena back in 2009. It was the first night of his world tour and he hadn’t toured in 30 years. He played

30 minutes of new tracks and the crowd were getting very worked up looking for old classics like ‘Father and Son’ and ‘Moonshadow’ but he instead introduced a full cast of actors who performed a play telling the story of his life while singing his songs. Cat Stevens was back stage narrating. This lasted about 15 minutes until thousands of people boo’d and left. He came back out quite defeated and then played the classics for an hour or so. It was shocking to see the reaction but kind of understandable in a way.

4. First album you bought and last album you bought?

My first was ‘Queen’s Greatest Hits’ and as I’m on Spotify these days I don’t buy albums but this morning I’m listening to Matt Simon’s ‘Catch and release’.

5. When you’re not playing music, what else do you do?

I exercise a lot and listen to pod casts all day but Hermitage Green admin takes up most of my time as I try to work out how the music industry works and how to introduce our music to international markets.

6. Who are your influences?

I really don’t know how to answer that question. I don’t strive to sound like anyone or write like anyone. I have listened to and loved music from an array of genres throughout my life and I feel like I’m influenced by each and every one of them. I love heartfelt music that comes from a place of pure passion and I strive to write music that people connect to emo-tionally.

7. If you weren’t playing with your fellow band mates, who would make up your ideal band?

Bernard Pretty Purdy on drums, Joe Dart from Vulfpeck on bass, Mark Tremonti from Alter bridge on guitar, and Myles Kennedy Alter bridge on vocals. I’ll just clap along on the side.

8. Any tips on life?Hmmmm.. I could be better

at working hard in certain relationships I have in my life so a tip for myself is all I can offer and that would be to make quality time for people you like and love. That’s when I’m happiest.

9. First person you’d invite to your party?

My best mate Cathal Garvey makes me laugh more than anyone in the world so he’s number one. If we’re talking famous people then being from Limerick the Rubberbandits would have to be invited

10. Last person you’d invite to your party?

Well, I wouldn’t invite any evil people or corrupt people but the question says the “last person” so that means I would actually be inviting them so I must have a relationship with them or a need to invite them but they may piss me off but I still like them so in that case my parents! Lol.

Record breakers!

Focus on

Glasnevin

MEMBERS of Glasnevin Lawn Tennis Club are planning to

‘Raise a Racket’ and break a world record on August 12-13.

The club is attempting to break the record for the longest ever non-stop tennis match and they’ll have to serve up a game of over 30 hours to do so.

It’s all part of the Glasnevin Lawn Tennis Club’s efforts to raise badly needed funds for charity, which will culminate in a Charity Gala Dinner in the club on September 3 when proceeds will be presented to representatives from the Laura Lynn Hospice charity.

The clubs will be creating a festival atmosphere during the world-record attempt, which begins at 2pm on August 12 and finishes on August 13 at around 8.05pm.

Families are invited to join in for face painting, a big raffle, a cake sale, and plenty of tennis on what promises to be a great fun day.

GLASNEVIN is one of Dublin’s most desirable suburbs, and with good reason. There are loads of local amenities,

including a couple of Ireland’s top tourist attractions, so no shortage of great places to go.

Here are some of Glasnevin’s best features.

1. BoTANIc GArDENSThe National Botanic Gardens are an oasis of calm and beauty, and best of all, entry is free. A visit to the gardens is a great way to relax and there’s often an exhibition, lecture or tour worth taking in. Keep up to date at www.botanicgardens.ie.

2. GLASNEVIN cEmETEryGlasnevin Cemetery Museum is both

the guardian and storyteller for the over 1.5 million people buried there. The history of Ireland can be told through the tales of the souls resting in the plots and the museum does a wonderful job of doing just that. The daily tours are well worth taking and many locals love to drop in to the café for lunch or just a cuppa and a chat.

3. mET ÉIrEANNGlasnevin has been home to Met

Éireann since 1979 and it’s said the modern era of the Irish Meteorological Service dates from its occupation of the odd looking building. The move meant all the Met’s Dublin based divisions could be housed under the same roof.

4. cHurcH of our LADy of DoLourS

There’s another unusual building just down the hill from the Met Éireann in the shape of the Church of our Lady of Dolours. Designed by architect, Vincent Gallagher, the Pyramid Church was dedicated by Archbishop Dermot Ryan on March 5, 1972 and it was one of the first Catholic churches in Ireland to incorporate a community centre in its basement.

5. NA fIANNA GAA cLuBRight in the heart of the Glasnevin

community, CLG Na Fianna was founded in 1955 and is one of few clubs in the country that caters for the full diversity of GAA sporting codes. There are facilities for football, hurling, ladies football, camogie, handball and rounders and there’s a great social aspect to the club too. A major power in Dublin senior football circles, Na Fianna has often put Glasnevin on the national sporting map.

Volkswagen is the Carrier of KingsSeán Creedon

VOLKSWAGEN has introduced a revamped version of their mas-sive seven-seater Sharan to the Irish market. I showed the car to a friend last week and his first words to me were ‘‘it’s so like the Seat Alhambra, but I’m not complaining, the Alhambra is a bril-liant car.’’

Yes, the Sharan and the Al-hambra share the same plat-form, but then so many new cars now share platforms and various other parts, especially if like in this instance they come from the same VW group. This is the sec-ond generation of the Sharan and the first generation was also re-lated to the Ford Galaxy, all great people carriers.

The Sharan can be described as a genuine seven-seater in that the third row of seats, which are often small and only suitable for

children, are big enough for two adults.

It truly is a massive motor and when you sit in there is a massive windscreen in your line of vision. Coupled with the high driving position, you will really feel safe and comfortable as you hit the road with the family on board.

The electric sliding doors are really impressive. But how many times did family members try and pull the doors, which work by gently pressing on the door handle; no force is needed.

The Sharan would be ideal if you are using the car for taxi work as the electric doors would be perfect for customers enter-ing and exiting the car. But if you are transporting children it’s good to know that there are three individual seats with Isofix child seat fixtures and each seat can be slid forward or back inde-pendent of the others.

The leg space for the two peo-ple in the third row will depend on the positioning of the middle row, but everything is flexible and you should be able to reach a compromise for all seven, who are unlikely to be the same age or height.

There are several discreet storage areas in the cabin. These are under the seats, in the roof, on top of the dash and behind

the seats. You might not have much luggage space in the boot, but there are plenty of cubby holes to store items throughout the car. Naturally it’s a long mo-tor and you will appreciate the reversing camera.

Two trim levels, but just one engine, the 2.0-litre diesel with 150 brake horse power. The Com-fortline version starts at €42,500 and comes with 16-inch alloys, cruise control etc. The higher speced Highline version starts a t €46,760. Also available in auto-matic. Road tax is €270. For the record the Seat Alhambra starts at €38,995.

With seven individual seats naturally there is going to be lit-tle luggage space, assuming you are going to use all seven seats. That means no room for a spare

wheel, but the tyres are run-flat.I loved it and I suppose the

greatest praise I could give is to say that I wished I was young again. I had five brothers and two sisters, but the only people carrier we ever got near was a

pony and trap. The name Sharan is derived

from a Persian word meaning, Carrier of Kings. A very appropri-ate name for this massive people or maybe that should be ‘King Carrier.’

THE Renault Group has launched the fourth generation Mégane that is now available in their 26 Irish dealerships, priced from €19,490.

The new five-door hatchback, which has received a 5 star Euro NCAP rating, will be available in Expression, Dynamique Nav, Dy-namique S Nav, GT Line Nav and GT Nav trims.

The all-New Mégane will be available with fuel-efficient, low-emission powertrains. There are

two Energy TCe turbocharged petrol options of 1.2 litres/130hp and 1.6 litres/205hp (GT).

The turbodiesel alternatives are the 1.5-litre 110hp unit, with manual or EDC transmission, and a 1.6-litre dCi unit developing 130hp. The CO2 of the manual dCi 110 is just 96g/km, while at the

other end of the scale the TCe 205 GT will be capable of 0-100km/h in 7.1 seconds and a top speed of more than 230kmh.

This Mégane is lower, with a longer wheelbase and the widest front and rear track in the class – to give it even more dynamic and balanced proportions. The taut, precise appearance of the car is emphasised by broad, sculpted shoulders and wheels of up to 18 inches.

Teachers attend annual science workshopSCIENCE teachers and educators from across Dublin attended the 10th SSPC An-nual Chemistry Demonstration Workshop recently to acquire further knowledge about engaging science.

The residential workshop, hosted at Synthesis and Solid State Pharmaceutical Centre (SSPC) headquarters at the University of Limerick (UL), is designed to upskill and promote science among science teachers and educators in Ireland.

It provides them with the skills to promote problem and inquiry-based learning within the classroom, and to conduct over 40 engaging interactive science demonstrations, which are linked to real world science applica-tions.

Science discovery is full of natural curiosity and the work-shop provides a building block for teachers to bring this element

to the classroom that makes instruction exciting and one that fosters a better understanding for the student.

“Courses like this are essential for teachers’ continuous profes-sional development,” said Dr Sarah Hayes, SSPC Education and Outreach Officer.

The focus of the course is to utilise demonstrations and ‘mysteries’ to promote pupil engagement, problem solving and inquiry skills. The residential element offers teachers a chance to fully immerse themselves in their own professional develop-ment, and develop a repertoire of demonstrations linked to the physical sciences and all aspects of the Junior and Leaving Certificate curriculum. Support-ing teachers’ development is vital for the enhancement of the Irish education system.”

The 10th SSPC Annual Chem-istry Demonstration Workshop is an important element of Sci-

ence Foundation Ireland’s (SFI) public engagement remit and SSPC’s education and outreach programme.

It aims to support teachers in their ability to make pathways to navigate better engagement and bring novel science ideas into the classroom.

“SSPC plays a critical role in supporting STEM education in Ireland,” said Jon O’Halloran SSPC General Manager.

The SSPC’s education and out-reach programme aims to inspire young minds as to the possibili-ties and application of science in our everyday lives, and develop Ireland as a country with a scien-tifically literate population.

“This year the workshop was linked with the European Union funded TEMI project, which placed a significant emphasis on inquiry-based skills, explicitly linking the course to the upcom-ing Junior and Senior curricula.

“This combined approach

provides teachers with the time and space in which to develop new and exciting content for their lessons that will excite and stimulate students’ interest in science and scientific careers.”

Teachers participating in the course believed that “the change of approach to chemistry, the emphasis on getting the pupils to participate and guess the answers and using questioning to lead them to understanding” was incredibly beneficial.

The SSPC Annual Chemistry

Demonstration Workshop was supported by the Synthesis and Solid State Pharmaceutical Centre (SSPC), the Department of Chemical and Environmental Sciences (CES), University of Lim-erick, Pharmachemical Ireland, the Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST), The Institute of Physics Ireland, and the Royal Society of Chemistry. Additional support and funding was provided by EU Project.

The workshop has been developed upon the foundations

of Student Active Learning in Science (SALiS), an international project, which utilises best-prac-tice teaching methods within science education, funded by EU-TEMPUS.

On-going research is continu-ing through the EU FP7 funded project TEMI.

The power of contouring continues to make waves in the beauty industry, but the face sculpting make-up technique can play havoc with the skin. Contour and high-lighting can create flattering and sophisticated looks, but the heavy handed application that contouring requires can cause sensitive or acne prone skin to flare up. With non-comodogenic properties, the Youngblood Contour Palette is specifically developed for problem skin. This contouring kit is completely free from talc, perfumes and chemical dyes, which can be harsh on the skin. The unique, lightweight formula also contains skin soothing ingredients such as Aloe Vera and Honeysuckle, making it feel exceptionally comfortable. Composed of three easy to blend shades for highlighting, paired with three complimentary shades for contouring, the Youngblood Contour Palette shapes and enhances the facial features, creating a beautiful naturally defined look. Pupils step it up for Active Schools’ Week

The week of exercise and activi-ties took place as part of the na-tional Active Schools’ initiative of which the school is a member.

Led by Junior Infants’ teacher, Pauline Keane, children in all four years took part in new sports and games daily such as Ultimate Fris-bee, yoga and athletics.

One of the highlights was the new ‘Wake Up, Shake Up’ pro-gramme in which children and their parents did 10 minutes of dancing and light exercise along-side their teachers before classes began.

Speaking to Northside People, Ms Keane explained how it quickly became one of the most popular events of the week and the effect it had on her students.

“It really improves their concen-tration first thing in the morning and shakes away the cobwebs,” Ms Keane said.

“The feedback has been excel-lent. Parents find that the kids are dying to get out of bed and be on time because they want to get to school for the ‘Wake Up, Shake Up’.”

The week also saw children from each of the 26 classes run one mile around the school throughout the week as part of a ‘school mara-thon’.

This, in conjunction with the

new sports the children were in-troduced to, had a positive impact on the their mood and behaviour, both inside and outside the class-room.

“When you see them coming up to lunchtime when they’re flailing a little bit, we go out and do our lap of the school,” Ms Keane said.

“They love it and they come back energised and I’ve heard a number of the teachers saying we should keep this up too.

“I’d love to keep it going. The children also took part in a hula hoop championship, ‘skipathons’ and a mixed teacher-students’ football match.”

An Active Schools’ Committee, comprising children who provided positive feedback and suggestions throughout the week, assisted Ms Keane for the initiative.

Ms Keane is hoping that the events will have a positive effect on the children’s physical wellbe-ing throughout the year.

“We feel we have a responsibil-ity to do our part by ensuring they (the children) are getting their 60 minutes of PE a week and encour-aging parents also,” she added.

“We’re trying to mould a healthy lifestyle with our Active Schools’ flag and drum in how important it is for kids to go out and get ac-tive.”

Fab floral fashions for a summer feel

vent the living space with this tried and tested trend.

“This bold look takes foliate inspiration from high-fashion, in-cluding recent shows from Prada and Christopher Kane, to push the boundaries of interior design.

“While this interpretation wouldn’t work for every home, I hope that it encourages people to step away from the tradition and gives them tips to do so in just a few easy steps.”

Here are Lafferty’s tips on how to recreate the look at home:

• Go with what feels right for you. This high-impact look won’t work for everyone, but try introducing a bold print on just one wall, for example, or adding flowers in dif-ferent sized ceramic and metallic vases to bring the room up to date.

• One key trend we’re seeing lately across the world of interiors is to bring personality to a space and this look gives you a real op-portunity to express yourselves. Your home is your personal space, so it’s important to make your mark in your own unique way. I would encourage people to be brave and expressive! I was personally capti-vated by Sofia Coppola’s Dior cam-paign, so took the opportunity to play with whimsical giant balloons.

• I like to create deliberately framed views in my designs. I work with clients to frame and show-

FLORAL prints have long been a style staple and interiors fa-vourite, but this summer they are among the hottest fashion and interiors trends, with top designers taking an ever bold-er approach to deliver a burst of floral inspiration.

One of them is rising star and award winning interior designer, Roisin Lafferty, from Ranelagh, who

has teamed up with DFS to create a look that pushes the boundaries to create an artistic and abstract take on the popular floral micro trend.

The look features large-scale flo-ral prints and bold bursts of block colour, complemented by the softer pastel tones of the Scandi inspired DFS Betsy Sofa to create a look that is designed to shock the senses with a punch of botanical brilliance.

“Florals have always been a

mainstay in the world of interiors,” says Lafferty.

“Symbolising freshness, they bring a femininity and prettiness that transports your home from its winter hibernation. But too of-ten we see florals take a back seat, used timidly as a finishing touch or thrown into a chintzy country cot-tage setting.

“Florals are having their mo-ment and it’s time to totally rein-

this same way.Stand in various rooms and look

at what is framed, how the spaces flow and what stands out. Choose what you want to shine in your home and frame it so it stands out. Remember to have fun with it, it can all be and should be change-able!

• Furniture is an investment, so be sure to choose colours and shapes that you are drawn to. I love to create a statement and the Betsy Sofa and Cuddler shows that pink doesn’t have to be cutesy. Both pieces have a lovely soft and femi-nine shape which, for me, won’t date.

• Throw out the rule book and mix patterns and prints – some-thing the catwalk does effortlessly. While it’s important to choose the right ones, mixing patterns can create impact in the home. Floral prints complement each other and add a great mix of colours.”

• If you’re nervous about intro-ducing bold patterns or statements into your room, opt for bringing the look to life through subtle accesso-ries such as this gorgeous scatter cushion which complements and adds depth to the block colour of the DFS Betsy Cuddler.

brexit: just keep calm and seize the opportunity

We can attract thousands of jobs in everything from banking, legal and professional services to IT and indeed manufacturing in companies looking for a stable home.

These positions will provide employment for Irish citizens and attract top talent from abroad to fill them, boosting incomes and State revenues.

I’m already getting calls in the office from people looking to leave London who see Dublin as an attractive alternative.

What the referendum result made clear is that making predic-tions is a tricky business. If and when Britain does leave there may be challenges. If sterling re-mains in the doldrums, it will cer-tainly affect our export business-es, a so-called “hard border” may be re-introduced with the North and tariffs may be imposed, all affecting commerce with one of our largest trading partners.

However, when political heads cool, it should be obvious that for peace and prosperity a mutually beneficial deal should be reached between Britain and the rest of the EU. Markets will eventually calm and life will go on. That’s in everyone’s interest.

The next two years will be im-portant and eventful. Our Gov-ernment, State bodies (especially the IDA) and our people should be smart about how we react, but more importantly we should be proactive.

As with all disruptive events, those who come out on top are the ones who stay calm and think clearly.

We must quickly institute a plan to take advantage of unfold-ing events and ensure that if there is an appetite to relocate jobs and investment from Britain that we

Brexit came as something of a surprise, though not a total shock as polls had swung wildly in the lead up to the referendum.

The mass media and various commentators have reported the fallout since the vote with more than a note of hysteria.

One national publication de-scribed its future effect on Ire-land as the next worse thing to war. This doesn’t help. It doesn’t help the prevailing atmosphere or the economy in Britain or in Ireland.

Yes, there have been imme-diate consequences for David Cameron and others in Britain’s political establishment, but noth-ing has really changed since the votes were counted.

The British Parliament has yet to invoke Article 50 which will start the leaving process and they certainly won’t do so before a new Tory leader is elected.

If they ever do, it will take up to two years to negotiate the exit of Britain from the EU. So we have potentially two and a half years before anything really changes. No need for panic.

This isn’t to say that economic actors (investors, job creators and businesses) aren’t ruffled by the prospect of Brexit.

They are shook up, they have put investment on hold and they are considering whether Britain really remains a good place to do business.

Ireland should take advantage of the opportunity this presents. We are now the only English speaking country in the EU which makes us an even more attractive prospect for foreign (particularly US) investment.

Cormac Spencer

I MUST admit I find those ubiq-uitous “Keep Calm and Carry On” memes irritating at best, but given the events which have unfolded since Britain voted to leave the European Union, I might not object to them being plastered on every lamp post in Europe!

Brexit came as something of a surprise, though not a total shock.

▪Irelandshould take advantage

of the opportunity this presents. We are now the only English speaking country in the EU which makes us an even more attractive prospect for foreign (particularly US)investment.

have positioned ourselves as the obvious choice.

Brexit could be a big opportu-nity for Ireland so let’s keep calm and grasp it.
