Motto- I’m not here for a long time.

I’m here for a good time. George Strait

Class Song- “See You Again” by Wiz Khalifa

Class Flower- Yellow Rose

Class Colors- White and Gold

Song Lyrics

Lyrics

It's been a long day without you, my friend

And I'll tell you all about it when I see you again

We've come a long way from where we began

Page 4: Northview High School Bulletin 2018.pdfNorthview High School ... When I see you again (Aah oh, aah oh ... Written by Andrew Cedar, Justin Scott Franks, Charlie Otto Puth, ...

4

Oh, I'll tell you all about it when I see you again

When I see you again

Dang, who knew?

All the planes we flew

Good things we've been through

That I'll be standing right here talking to you

'Bout another path

I know we loved to hit the road and laugh

But something told me that it wouldn't last

Had to switch up

Look at things different, see the bigger picture

Those were the days

Hard work forever pays

Now I see you in a better place (see you in a better place)

Uh

How can we not talk about family when family's all that we got?

Everything I went through you were standing there by my side

And now you gon' be with me for the last ride

It's been a long day without you, my friend

And I'll tell you all about it when I see you again

We've come a long way from where we began

Oh, I'll tell you all about it when I see you again

When I see you again

(Aah oh, aah oh

Wooooh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)

Yeah

First you both go out your way

And the vibe is feeling strong

And what's small turn to a friendship

A friendship turn to a bond

And that bond will never be broken

The love will never get lost

Page 5: Northview High School Bulletin 2018.pdfNorthview High School ... When I see you again (Aah oh, aah oh ... Written by Andrew Cedar, Justin Scott Franks, Charlie Otto Puth, ...

5

And when brotherhood come first

Then the line will never be crossed

Established it on our own

When that line had to be drawn

And that line is what we reach

So remember me when I'm gone

How can we not talk about family when family's all that we got?

Everything I went through you were standing there by my side

And now you gon' be with me for the last ride

So let the light guide your way, yeah

Hold every memory as you go

And every road you take, will always lead you home, home

It's been a long day without you, my friend

And I'll tell you all about it when I see you again

We've come a long way from where we began

Oh, I'll tell you all about it when I see you again

When I see you again

Aah oh, aah oh

Wooooh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

Yeah

When I see you again

See you again

When I see you again

Aah oh, aah oh

Wooooh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

Yeah

When I see you again

Senior Dues and Project Graduation

Seniors hold organizational meetings in which they discuss and vote on whether to

pay dues or to conduct fundraisers. The Class of 2018 voted to pay dues. Democratic

society results in majority rules; therefore, dues will be paid. As the year progresses and

the choice for Project Graduation is decided, the seniors will be advised as to whether more

funds are needed. Mr. Shugart will keep the seniors informed on Project Graduation.

Being a senior is an expensive time. If there is a senior who has a financial hardship

and cannot pay his/her dues, a request would need to be made to administration in a timely

manner.

Senior Caps, Gowns, Tassels, etc.

These are ordered at the same time as announcements. Herff Jones will send a

representative on campus to process orders. NEW!!! Clay Wren with Herff Jones will

be collecting money for the cap & gowns when I take the orders for graduation

announcements. The cost of the cap, gown and tassel will be $33.00. The school will

not have to collect any monies for cap & gown. Clay Wren will be at Northview on

November 02, 2017, from 10-1 to handle cap and gown orders per appointments for

seniors.

Seniors, please plan on being present. Once caps and gowns have been opened and

removed from the package, the cost is non-refundable. Summer School graduates should

let Clay Wren know their intent to keep or not to keep the cap and gown for summer

graduation. This notice should be given after notification as to their not meeting criteria

to march at regular graduation. If kept, the Herff Jones representative will collect the cap

and gown at the summer graduation site, immediately following the ceremony.

(Mrs. Mesa, please advise both full-time Dual Enrollment and 18-credit diploma “seniors”

to reference the Graduation Bulletin frequently. Thank You.)

Per Mrs. Brandy White,

March 31:

Students who have not purchased caps and gowns need to contact Herff Jones directly

to order caps and gowns for the $58.00 price. If they choose to purchase on Herff

Jone's website, they will have to pay the additional $20 shipping.

Yearbooks

Yearbooks are on sale online. The yearbooks are currently $65 until delivery, depending

upon purchase date and $75 when delivered, if any extras are delivered (depends on

company). The yearbooks can be ordered by bringing cash or check to Mrs. Robinson or

online at Jostensyearbooks.com, through the middle of April. Checks will be accepted by

Mrs. Robinson on or before___________________.

!!!!!Yearbooks are sold out, unless the company sends extras which are produced through the

printing process for even copy processing numbers.

Website and Career/Scholarship Lab

The Scholarship File is located within the guidance department. Mrs. Heather Mesa,

guidance counselor for seniors, extension 223, is the coordinator for the Senior Honors

Night program and for Academic Awards Night. The Career Lab is housed in the guidance

department.

Exams

A definitive schedule for all applicable tests will be released to students as soon as schedule is developed by the Assistant Principal and approved by the Director of Secondary Education, Mrs.Lesa Morgan. A calendar of these exams will be posted on the NHS website: www.northviewchiefs.com. End-of-Course Exams are state mandated and will impact the student’s final grade according to the student’s grade status at the time of taking the EOC. EOC exams are online exams. It is extremely important that each senior in these applicable courses reports to testing at the proper time.

o Regular Semester Exams for periods will have a separate schedule and will be the week of _May 11-16,, 2018__for seniors.

o Seniors may not enter an exam late/tardy, for they may not disturb the test in progress, thus disturbing other seniors who were in class on time and who are

Page 11: Northview High School Bulletin 2018.pdfNorthview High School ... When I see you again (Aah oh, aah oh ... Written by Andrew Cedar, Justin Scott Franks, Charlie Otto Puth, ...

11

concentrating on their exams. Seniors who are late/tardy will see Mr. Pippins, assistant principal. Makeups for these students will be assigned, and these seniors, with applicable reasons for tardiness, will report back on___May 17, 2018__________, at 8:45 A.M. o Senior Exams are given within a regular class period, for 9-11 are following a regular schedule. Teachers of seniors must construct their exams to fit within the appropriate time and, if class contains 9-12 combination of students, must not give underclassmen a final with the seniors. o Students should be told their 4th nine weeks average (40%) for each class (other than EOC impacted courses) before the semester exam (20%). Seniors should already know their 3rd nine weeks’ average, which ended_March __9, 2018______. For 4th/ and 5th Blocks, students would have received a semester grade, via report card. o Seniors must attend all final days which have been designated for review purposes. o Seniors who are caught “visiting” on campus without signing in properly for an appropriate reason will face “out of appropriate area” discipline. o Seniors who are on campus and who are attending to legitimate business must not disturb classes in any manner. o Seniors: “Skipping” an exam results in failure of the course because he/she has not completed the course requirements. Electing to take a zero on the exam to be averaged is not an option. o Teachers should prepare two finals for classes that are mixed with seniors and underclassmen. Underclassmen under no circumstances should be allowed by the instructor to take an exam early. Giving an exam over to a “failing” senior, is not an option, unless this option is given to the entire class, for there may be other seniors who passed your class but might need GPA help, scholarship help, and/or other concerns. Teachers may not “pick and choose” whom to help

********There will be no Montage for the Class of 2018.

There were not enough seniors who submitted photos by April

19, in order to have the Montage produced.

Montage 10:35 - Theater

Ignore- No Montage:

Parents wishing to view the Montage would need to purchase a copy.

This viewing is for seniors only. Senior Montage is dependent upon

senior contributions of pictures for the montage and abilities to

compile montage in a timely manner. Before the Montage begins,

Mrs. Joyce Gunn will issue a “cleared” slip for each senior for the

senior’s ability to participate in graduation.

Ignore – No Montage.

From the Yearbook Staff: “We will do the montage for $250 if the senior class is interested. There was not

enough interest last year, but we are happy to put it together if the senior class

wants to pay. We would need pictures and a clear decision by at least three

weeks before we will be showing. More would be better. This is definitely not a

last minute thing.” Deadline for pictures is April 19, 2018.

Ignore – No Montage.

Senior Montage: 10:35, Theater

Senior Luncheon: 11:00 A.M.

Time will remain at 11:00 a.m., even though there will be No

Montage. (Time: Following Montage) The senior class will host a graduation luncheon, with food from

David’s Catfish and Chick-fil-A, at the football concession area.

The luncheon will be after the Senior Montage. This will be a great

opportunity for seniors to take those last “fun” pictures with the

entire class. After the luncheon, seniors would be excused.

Gym Set Up. P.E. in cafeteria or outside.

TEACHERS: SENIOR GRADES DUE AT NOON!!!!

May 17, 2018: 8:45 – 10:20 Senior Exam Makeups, Library, Ms. Sue

Jernigan

Senior Makeups, by prior arrangement with Mr.Pippins.

8:45-10:20 a.m.

Report to Mr. Greenwell in the ISS room.

9-11 are in classes reviewing for their semester exams, so seniors

may not interrupt any classes.

Failure to take an exam may result in the inability to confirm a

passing grade for a course, which would impact a student’s ability

to march at Graduation; therefore, it is most important to take

exams in a timely manner. Makeup sessions will not be repeated,

without proper documentation.

Seniors have two opportunities for exams: during the regular exam

period and during the makeup day.

Mr. Pippins must be contacted, if a make-up exam is needed.

Personal illness verified by a physician or a death in the family are

the two excuses accepted for missing an exam.

May 17, 2018: Senior Honors Night - 6:30 P.M. in the Theater

Ms. Heather Mesa, Coordinator Dress: Please dress for representation of your class. Do not

wear jeans, shorts, flip flops, spandex with too short top, etc.

There will be guests from universities, colleges, organizations,

etc. Please represent your class and your school appropriately. Although there is no processional, all seniors are asked to arrive at

an appropriate time, in order to be seated, before the program begins.

If you are a student that anticipates several awards, please sit where

you will not constantly have to “squeeze” out over other people.

This is a courtesy gesture, and it saves valuable time. Please be early

so that the program may begin on time. If you receive notification

of a scholarship or an award, prior to Honors Night, you need

to go by guidance to be sure that Mrs. Mesa is aware of the

scholarship or award. Even if you think that you might not receive

an honor, please be there to support your fellow classmates and to

take part in this “memory” time.

Valedictorian, Salutatorian, and all other Honor Cords, representing class rank or honor

club membership are distributed at Honors Night. Only state, district, or school items of

honor may be worn on graduation gowns. No outside organization may be represented on

the graduation gown.

May 17, 2018: Deadline to ask for wheelchair accessibility for parent or

grandparent.

If a senior has an immediate family member that is wheelchair

bound, the senior must request a handicapped pass from Mr. Pippins before the end of the

day on May 17. Handicapped passes for wheelchairs will be given to seniors at graduation

practice only on May 18. Since the chair arrangement on the gym floor does not allow for

wheelchairs we will provide a special area along the east wall of the gym for wheelchair

bound immediate family members. It is the senior's sole responsibility to request the pass

and give it to the appropriate family member. Seniors, please either do not cause

embarrassment by asking for a pass on the day of practice or on graduation day or having

a wheelchair bound guest attend graduation with nowhere to sit in the wheelchair . Time

will not permit Mr. Pippins to create a pass on the 18th or on graduation day as he has other

duties and responsibilities on those days. Other guests may also need wheelchair

accessibility, but we want to make sure that your senior family is “first-come first-served,”

so get your requests in as early as possible.

May 18, 2018: _Mandatory Graduation Practice!!!!: Very Important

Official Graduation Group Photograph will be done by Kay

Brown Photography at 9:00 A.M.

Allow plenty of time to arrive and to be seated in the correct order.

Anticipated (GPA’s as of May 17, 2018) Valedictorian and

Salutatorian are front center, and other honor students with

respective graduation insignia of honor (GPA’s as of 5/17) will be

seated next, i.e., Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and then

Cum Laude. In order to participate in the graduation Group Portrait,

you must be eligible to graduate in the regular exercises in May or

eligible to graduate at the end of the summer session in the district.

Seating chart will be done in advance. Adhere to dress code or not

be in the picture.

Seniors who are not dressed with gown, mortar board,

and tassel will not be in the photo. Students with

inappropriate footwear who are to sit on the front row

will be replaced by someone who does have on

appropriate footwear. Girls with underdress showing

will not be in the photo. Seniors without a WHITE shirt

and BLACK tie will be excluded.

Final semester grades are asked to be completed by teachers no later than

NOON.__May 16, 2018__. The list reflecting graduation status will be

finalized on this date by Mrs. Heather Mesa, senior guidance counselor,

so that students and parents may be given notice as to graduation status.

Parents and/or students are asked not to call or visit guidance trying to

obtain this information early, for this will only slow down the entire

Page 17: Northview High School Bulletin 2018.pdfNorthview High School ... When I see you again (Aah oh, aah oh ... Written by Andrew Cedar, Justin Scott Franks, Charlie Otto Puth, ...

17

process. Mrs. Mesa will be concentrating on finalizing data and will

need to have quality time for this.

9:00 A.M. Mandatory Practice for graduation. Seniors must

practice to participate in the graduation exercises. Remember previous note in bulletin as to prohibition against visitors at practice.

Class of 2016 – Totally Awesome!!! No problems, and their

practice was quick and simple!!! Class of 2017, Practice was

rough, but the Graduation was Awesome.

2013, 2015, and 2017 classes saw a senior not march because

he (all 3 X = “he”) did not show up to practice. 2013 was over

15 minutes late. 2015 and 2017 did not show at all and did not

call. If there is truly a family emergency, then call and it can be

verified with hospital and/or law enforcement.

1. Remember, graduation is a privilege and not a right.

Choosing not to practice means choosing not to march 2. No excuses.

3. Practice is 9:00 A.M. until released! Parents, please help

to get your senior here for this important time. Seniors will

need to make sure that they have no conflicts with other

plans, including work schedules.

4. Seniors who miss more than 15 minutes of this practice

either by coming late or leaving early will pick up

diplomas the Monday following graduation. The senior

who misses this much of the practice will not march at

graduation, unless administration has doctor’s excuse for

that exact time of the day. The superintendent’s office

supports this rule.

5. Seniors who arrive to practice in “short shorts” and extreme

exposure problems will be asked to leave, and if a

correction is made and the senior is back within the 15

minute time frame, the senior can continue with practice. If

not, diploma will be available on the following Monday.

6. Failure to clear obligations to the school and district will not

prohibit a qualified senior from receiving his/her diploma, but it

will prevent him/her from participating in the graduation

exercises.

7. 18-credit early graduates must have paid their “senior” dues by

mandatory practice time. They do not have to pay their junior

dues, until at a later date, if it is determined that they failed to

meet the early 18-credit graduation diploma requirements.

Page 18: Northview High School Bulletin 2018.pdfNorthview High School ... When I see you again (Aah oh, aah oh ... Written by Andrew Cedar, Justin Scott Franks, Charlie Otto Puth, ...

Mr. Pippins must be contacted, if a make-up exam is needed.

Personal illness verified by a physician or a death in the family are

the two excuses accepted for missing an exam.

Drop-Ins

Project Graduation: Project Graduation will be held in the gym, from 10 p.m. until 3

a.m. Any graduate may drop-in at anytime, but once admitted may

only leave once. No leave and return.

In order to participate in Project Graduation, you must be eligible

to graduate in the regular exercises in May or be eligible to

graduate in the summer session.

May (TBD): Requests for final transcripts: All colleges and universities require

that you submit a final transcript including your second semester

grades. Stop by guidance to complete a form requesting

transcripts. Dual Enrollment students need to request a transcript

from PSC as well. This request must be done through the

registrar’s office on the PSC main campus.

May 28, 2018: Holiday!!!!! Memorial Day

Baccalaureate: Bratt Baptist

May 13, 2018

Speaker and Time TBD

Senior Class members are totally responsible for Baccalaureate.

Senior Class Officers coordinate the event.

Senior Class Officers meet with their class, usually at a local off-campus site, and discuss

options. They may meet before or after school on campus.

Senior Class Officers contact the appropriate individuals for securing of the site and

speakers.

Announcements for meetings for the purpose of organizing Baccalaureate may be made

during the daily announcements.

The school does not become involved in any of the Baccalaureate arrangements.

Northview administrators accept invitations to attend the service.

Ranking of Graduating Seniors for 2018

Determination of Valedictorian and Salutatorian will be determined by the

cumulative weighted GPA, to the hundredth place. The cumulative,

weighted GPA’s which are the same to the hundredth place will be

considered a tie, whether for either valedictorian or salutatorian.

*Graduating Seniors will be recognized with three levels of honors.

(1) Summa Cum Laude (Highest Honors) Garnet and Gold cords

4.00 or higher weighted GPA

Three weighted course credits with a “C” or higher

No grade forgiveness for a grade of “D”

An “F” in any course makes the student ineligible

May 19, 2018 GRADUATION!!!

Seniors must be in the cafeteria by 3:00. Parking for seniors is out front from the

cafeteria on the south side of the school. Seniors report to the cafeteria for the official

line up. Graduation sponsors will give any updates and/or additional information at this

time. This time is for seniors only, so please tell family members and well-wishers to see

you before or after the ceremony. It is the seniors’ responsibility, not the school’s, to advise

their parents/guardians and friends of the procedures for the day, for no one wants a

parent/guardian or friend to feel “unwanted.”

Gym Opens for Visitors at 2:00 P.M. Security will be in the gym and will open

the doors at 2:00 p.m. Visitors are not allowed to “save” seats. It is first come-first served

seating. Doors will close at 4 p.m. No one is allowed to enter once doors are closed,

because the seniors deserve a dignified ceremony. Overflow and those who arrive

after 4 p.m. will be seated in the theater.

Deputies are to keep the lobby clear during the ceremony.

The school has and must abide by a contract with Kay Brown Photography to take

the Senior Portrait, so anyone wishing to purchase a group photo should fill out the

purchase order from Kaye Brown. The Group Picture will be taken the day of Mandatory

Practice, May18, at 9 a.m.

The Escambia School District began live streaming of the graduation ceremony.

The live streaming may be accessed via the school district’s website.

Graduation in the gym at 4:00 P.M.

DRESS: MORTARBOARDS AND GOWNS

Note: Class of 2017 was really, really good! One tie was the only problem.

Awesome!!!!

All graduates must be attired in caps and gowns to participate in Commencement.

The mortarboard should be worn “Square” on the forehead, not tilted on the back of the

head. Please try on the cap as soon as you get it to make sure that it is the right size. A

neat tacking with needle and thread will prevent a lot of slipping and sliding and attaching

with bobbie pins at the last minute.

Young men should wear dress, plain (no design) white shirts, black slacks (very

definitely no jeans or khaki), black shoes (dress shoes, i. e., no brogans, no gym shoes, no

clogs, no house shoes, no tennis shoes, no Roman sandals and so forth), black solid tie

(not bright red, blue, green, etc., but dark as in dark and very black socks with their

gowns. Girls should wear dresses that are not longer than their own gowns and black dress

shoes, without cork or other light material soles or wedges. Girls underdress should not be

visible above the top of the gown or the bottom of the gown. No corsages, flowers, hair

Page 22: Northview High School Bulletin 2018.pdfNorthview High School ... When I see you again (Aah oh, aah oh ... Written by Andrew Cedar, Justin Scott Franks, Charlie Otto Puth, ...

22

ornaments, or jewelry may be worn on top of the Cap and Gown at Commencement. No

gum or sunglasses. Flowers may not be carried by the graduates.

Mortar Boards (Caps) may not be decorated in any fashion. If your Mortar Board

has been altered in any manner with any change, especially any decoration of any type,

you will not be allowed to march. This is not a time for statement of individuality, it is a

uniform, dress, formal occasion. Nothing gaudy will be allowed which diminishes the

formality of the occasion. If the Mortar Board has been altered, the senior will not march.

No attire other than school designated will be allowed. Northview will allow Honor

Stoles from College Dual Enrollment, with confirmation from college prior to

Graduation. Please do not attempt to wear something from an off-campus club, society,

organization, etc. Any senior who attempts to wear unauthorized articles will be pulled

from the graduation line and will not be allowed to “walk” unless the situation is rectified.

This is a district-level, backed policy for all schools.

Each of the students will be “searched,” before marching into the gym for

contraband items, such as lighters.

AFTER THE CEREMONY – Seniors will proceed to the media center where the senior

sponsors will be located to collect the gowns. Each senior will be given a “cleared” slip

from the teacher. The senior will proceed to the attendance window. Mrs. Vicki Godwin,

Mrs. Teresa Johnson, and Mrs. Lisa Chancery will receive the “cleared” slip and will issue

the diploma. (Do not forget that all you receive on stage is the cover.) When you receive

your diploma, please sign the graduation banner, which will be stored for future reunions.

!!!Remember, those who have not practiced the full mandatory graduation practice will

pick up their diplomas from the principal on the next official school day following

graduation. Seniors who “would have” graduated with the class but chose other options

are not to sign the banner.

!!!!Any senior who “trips” or shows any signs of intentional distraction, as deemed such

by the school and district personnel (not by family or friends), in any Processional and/or

Recessional will receive his/her diploma the following week from district personnel.

This rule is necessary to keep seniors from creating their own side shows of entertainment

to the embarrassment of not only their family, but also to the visiting guests on campus.

No one senior should view the graduation ceremony as his/her right to make any type of

statement, other than the valedictorian and salutatorian which is expressed in their

speeches, which are the culmination of all of their education. Please be mindful that each

and every one of you are representative of the whole class during this ceremony, so if

something is done to detract from the ceremony, it will not only cast a bad light upon

yourself, but also for every member of your class.

After Graduation

1. Roll Call – Ms. Carroll

2. Explain Project Graduation information – Mr.

Jim Shugart

3. Alpha march and verification of formal names,

per guidance department –

Ms. Megan Carroll

Make sure that the seniors are lined up at the

stage side first. . .makes it faster!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4. Seniors who “owe” a debt should have been

contacted by Mrs. Joyce Gunn, Finance

Specialist, by this time.

5. Parking –

Reminder:

There will be no time to wait for seniors to correct situations they knew in advance not to

create. Neither the practice nor the ceremony will be sacrificed for the many, because of

the one, two, or few. Your Graduation Bulletin has been specific. Each senior has been

reminded to read it, and any updates, carefully and to abide by all of the instructions.

Graduation Bulletin is located on website for added convenience.

Roll Call –

Ms. Megan Carroll and Mrs. Heather Mesa: Val., Sal., Summa Cum Laude, Magna

Cum Laude, and Cum Laude will have been announced and will have been recognized at

Senior Honors Night. Completion of graduation requirements for ability to march during

Commencement Exercises will be done by Mrs. Heather Mesa. Guidance Department

furnishes list per the aforementioned categories. We will not take time to

“recognize” or award any recognition to anyone who did not come to Senior Honors

Night.

Mrs. Joyce Gunn has identified those not cleared. They do not march, if not cleared

before practice gets underway.

Mrs. Brandy White: Reminds about required dress. No excuses for failure to wear the

required black pants, because seniors can see NJROTC instructors. Black dress shoes

are required: no flip flops, no bedroom shoes, no clogs, no brogans, no sneakers, no

“scuffed up” cowboy boots, etc. Boys must wear a plain white shirt with solid black tie

(no gold, no pastels, no designs, etc.). BIG “flashy” earrings and/or necklaces and/or

Page 24: Northview High School Bulletin 2018.pdfNorthview High School ... When I see you again (Aah oh, aah oh ... Written by Andrew Cedar, Justin Scott Franks, Charlie Otto Puth, ...

24

bracelets are not allowed and must be removed. No jewelry that is “flashy” is to be seen

outside the gown. Simple pearls and/or necklace is fine. Everything has been spelled out

in the Graduation Bulletin, with one posted on school website. In addition, each senior

has been given a mandatory practice reminder. Consult the Bulletin for senior group

portrait details.

Repeat! Mortar Boards (Caps) may not be decorated in any fashion. If your

Mortar Board has been altered in any manner with any change, especially any decoration

of any type, you will not be allowed to march. This is not a time for statement of

individuality, it is a uniform, dress, formal occasion. Nothing gaudy will be allowed which

diminishes the formality of the occasion. If the Mortar Board has been altered, the senior

will not march.

Reminder: Gowns are to be turned in as soon as graduation is over. Gowns

MUST be turned in ASAP after the ceremony to be inventoried and boxed for shipment

ASAP. Graduates will report to the Media Center where you will turn in your gown.

Make sure all Honor pins are off. Once cleared and given a “Clear” slip, graduates will

proceed to the attendance window to sign the class banner and to pick up your diploma.

There are volunteers waiting to help give each of you YOUR diploma. Do not keep them

waiting or you will need to return on Monday to pick up your diploma. Only graduating

seniors may sign the banner. If you are a senior and you are not qualified to march and

graduate neither on graduation day nor at summer graduation, you may sign the banner

when you finish the necessary requirements to get your diploma.

Practice begins.

*Principal reads to audience:

(*See last page.)

Line up for the processional along the breezeway wall adjacent to the gym: Val.,

Sal., Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, Cum Laude, and then alphabetical order.

Tassels on the right! The Val. and Sal. will proceed to the stage and will assume their

correct station. Deputy will monitor.

Once all of the seniors are lined up outside the gym, coming from the cafeteria down

Wing D on graduation day, they should be lined up one-by-one, Mrs. Brandy White,

Captain Code, and Perry Byars will be there to monitor and search the seniors as they

march into the gym.

Seniors march in one-by-one. The first senior goes to the right aisle and the second goes

to the nearest, the left aisle. Continue alternating. Senior will proceed to their individual

seats. The first row will “drop off” at the appropriate chair, starting at the stage side.

Beginning with the second row, the first senior for that row will enter the row from the

right-hand side and will march down until he/she is at the last chair (one closest to the

stage). All other rows will do the same.

Page 25: Northview High School Bulletin 2018.pdfNorthview High School ... When I see you again (Aah oh, aah oh ... Written by Andrew Cedar, Justin Scott Franks, Charlie Otto Puth, ...

25

Processional: Remember, people are going to be taking pictures as seniors march up the

aisle. Give them a clear view, but do NOT stop. March to the music.

At the conclusion of the Processional, _________________clips the barrier to the left of

the stage and _____________clips the barrier to the right of the stage.

REMAIN STANDING!!!

The senior who will lead the pledge will stand by at the steps out of the way of the

seniors who are filing in. When the last senior goes by to assume his/her place in the last

row, the senior who will do the pledge will go onto the stage. (If the cadet is the Val or

sal, then he/she simply goes to the appropriate seat on stage.)

The cadet/senior who will lead the pledge steps to the lectern and says, “Please remain standing for the Presentation of the Colors and for the Pledge of Allegiance.” If a male student, the cadet/senior removes his mortarboard (cap)

as a signal to all of the senior boys to remove their caps. This is also the signal

for the NJROTC unit to begin their entrance from the back of the gym-audience

area.

(Recess one row in front of the stage, to allow for the Presentation of the Colors.)

When the NJROTC unit is in place in front of the stage, the senior leads the pledge. At

the end of the pledge, the NJROTC unit Posts the Colors (puts flags in place) and the unit

retires to the back of the gym. Senior who says the pledge stands straight, facing

forward with eyes on the cadets as they exit.

As soon as the cadets have cleared, he/she should say, “You may be seated.”

All of the audience, seniors, and people on stage will sit. Seniors will sit in UNISON!

All together!!!!

This is the key for the male seniors to replace their mortar boards (caps). The senior who

led the pledge steps back and goes down the steps and goes to his/her seat. By the time

the senior who said the pledge is in place, all mortar boards should be back on.

At the conclusion of the Pledge, while everyone is sitting, the members of the ensemble

should move to the risers. After the special music, the members go back to their seats.

The class president steps up on stage and goes to the lectern. If the class president is a

member of the ensemble, then he/she just steps up on stage.

The class president does the Welcome, which should be approximately 1-2 minutes.

The class president, if not on the front row, as the seniors march in, should

assume his/her place to the backside of the steps leading on stage. Remember to

have the person in the next chair to safeguard the class president’s chair. At this

point the class president does not enter the row in alphabetical order, for that

would mean he/she would have to come out of the row for the pledge. The class

president will be seated at the end of the rows, next to Captain Code, to facilitate

Page 26: Northview High School Bulletin 2018.pdfNorthview High School ... When I see you again (Aah oh, aah oh ... Written by Andrew Cedar, Justin Scott Franks, Charlie Otto Puth, ...

26

easy entrance onto and off the stage. After the welcome, the class president goes

to his/her appropriate honor and/or alphabetical order seat within the seniors.

If the class president is a member of the Senior Ensemble, he/she moves to the staging

area, and the other members of the ensemble quickly assemble. Reminder for the

ensemble not to talk. Coordinate efforts for some to assume positions from all sides and

front, so as not to “bunch.”

Salutatorian If not part of the ensemble, when the seniors have made it back to their

respective places, after the ensemble selection, he/she steps to the lectern. The

Salutatorian’s speech is looking back in time, reflecting on the memories of the class.

The speech is between 1-2 minutes. No more, no less.

The Valedictorian should give the Salutatorian time to return to his/her seat before

he/she rises and steps to the lectern. The Valedictorian’s speech is dedicated to the future,

looking forward, visualizing what may be. The speech is between1-2 minutes. No

more, no less.

When the Valedictorian has returned to his/her seat, Ms. Carroll will step to the lectern

and will introduce the special guests, beginning with the superintendent.

On behalf of the Northview High School administration, faculty, and staff, I would like to

welcome the following honored platform guests to our 2018 Graduation Commencement

ceremony:

Superintendent of Escambia School District - Mr. Malcolm Thomas

School Board Member District 3 – Ms. Lee Hansen

School Board Member District 1 - Mr. Kevin Adams

School Board Chairman and School Board Member District 2 - Mr. Gerald Boone

School Board Vice Chairman and School Board Member District 4 - Mrs. Patty

Hightower

School Board Member for Northview - District 5- Mr. Bill Slayton

Deputy Superintendent - Mr. Norm Ross

Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction - Mr. Steve Marcanio

Director of High Schools - Mrs. Lesa Morgan

Director of Workforce Education – Dr. Michelle Taylor

Director of Exceptional Student Education – Mrs. Teri Szafran

Assistant Principal of Northview High School – Mr. Gerry Pippins

Principal of Northview High School – Mrs. Gayle Weaver

After the introductions, Ms. Carroll will introduce the superintendent’s part on the

program, “Ladies and Gentlemen, we will now have the Congratulatory Remarks from the Superintendent.”

Page 27: Northview High School Bulletin 2018.pdfNorthview High School ... When I see you again (Aah oh, aah oh ... Written by Andrew Cedar, Justin Scott Franks, Charlie Otto Puth, ...

27

The superintendent will deliver his Congratulatory Remarks to the Class of 2018.

When the superintendent has finished, Ms. Carroll steps back to the lectern and says,

“Will the Senior Class of 2018 please rise.” Seniors will rise TOGETHER!

As Ms. Carroll calls the name of each senior, the senior will come up on the stage, will

receive the diploma (cover only at this time), will shake Mrs. Weaver’s hand,

Superintendent Thomas’s hand, Board Chair’s and Vice Chair’s hand, and Mr. Pippins’

hand and will exit the stage. Once the senior whose name has been called and has

processed across stage to reach the top of the right hand steps, Ms. Carroll will call

the next senior’s name.

The Val. and Sal. are the first in line for the diplomas, so as soon as seniors are told to

rise by Ms. Carroll, these two seniors should stand and exit the stage: Val. and Sal. will

step down from the stage to the right side and will remain standing at the bottom of

the steps until Ms. Carroll calls their names separately. Val’s name is called, and

he/she crosses in front of the stage, steps on stage, receives diploma, and assumes same

position - but standing. Same procedure for the Salutatorian.

All of the seniors will be standing. The first row will line up (bumper to bumper) and

will face the stage. All other rows will face forward.

It is most important to remember that they will all turn in their row and face the

stage and will proceed from the left side facing the seniors. (Reminder: Do not have

the seniors start at the far end next to the musical setup.)

Each senior will step up on stage to receive his/her diploma. As the one in front is

stepping down the right side of the stage, the next senior should be ready to step onto the

left steps. Ms. Carroll should call the senior’s name as he/she steps past the podium.

Do not wait! Each senior steps up on stage, crosses the stage, exits on the right,

marches in front of the stage, and returns to the appropriate row. When all of the first row

has returned to their seats, edging along to their original chair, as each senior goes on

stage, Ms. Carroll will pause, allowing the first row to sit in unison. The lead senior on

the row and the last senior on the row should be able to make eye contact and lead the

row in sitting in unison. Same procedure is followed for each row. Repeat: When the

last senior is in place on the immediate front row, that one row will sit in unison.

This procedure will

be repeated row by row until the last rows are complete. This is done in order for all

seniors to have an opportunity to be seen by all, not just the front rows.

Both girls and boys should be very, very careful as they climb the steps with shoes vs.

gown. Tripping is very common for those who try to wear very high-heeled shoes and/or

do not pick up their gowns at the steps. Practice climbing some steps at home in gown

and shoes. It is not easy.

Graduation is the second most solemn occasion in your life, next to your wedding day.

Please know that all senior parents and friends are very proud of each and every senior

who graduates; however, when family and friends try to yell, hoot, and holler, it just

drowns out the next person’s name. Let’s be fair to our fellow seniors and try and make

Page 28: Northview High School Bulletin 2018.pdfNorthview High School ... When I see you again (Aah oh, aah oh ... Written by Andrew Cedar, Justin Scott Franks, Charlie Otto Puth, ...

28

sure that friends and family do not drown out someone else’s name and time. It is really

important that each senior’s name is able to be heard and recognized as he/she receives

his/her diploma.

Remind parents that the entire front is cordoned off, so parents will not be able to access

the marching area reserved for seniors. Deputies will enforce the Senior-Only Zone.

At the conclusion of the Presentation of Diplomas, the senior(s) who will lead the Alma

Mater will go to the lectern. The senior(s) who will lead the Alma Mater will not return

to his/her seat, after receiving his/her diploma. The senior will cross in front of the

stage, as all other seniors, but instead of returning to his/her chair will stand to the back

of the steps by the stage.

The senior leading the Alma Mater will say, “Everyone, please rise and everyone join

in for the singing of the Alma Mater.”

At the conclusion of the Alma Mater, Senior (s) who leads in the Alma Mater will say, “Everyone, please be seated...” and will descend the stage and will return to his/her seat.

(Alma Mater is printed on the inside of the Commencement exercise program.)

Seniors sit in UNISON – Together!

Mrs. Weaver goes to the lectern and makes a few remarks. At the end of the remarks,

Superintendent Malcolm Thomas,

as principal of Northview High School,

I hereby certify each of these seniors has met the eligibility requirements for a high

school diploma as prescribed by the Escambia County School Board and the State

of Florida.”

The Superintendent says, “Would the Class of 2018 please rise,”

The Superintendent rises and gives the Graduation Charge. At the conclusion, the

seniors may toss their mortar boards. Do not aim at anyone. Toss into the air. (This

makes a great picture, so tell your family and friends to be ready for the Kodak moment.)

Remember to retrieve your mortarboard, visit with family and friends, and then quickly

make your way to the media center for checkout.

NJROTC will pass out the Commencement programs at the entrance to the gym doors

from lobby and at the entrance to the theater.

Note: Dean Johnson is in charge of the coordination and assignment of duties to the four

deputies, hired for the occasion.

2018 Deputy Edmondson will coordinate with the other deputy(ies) for assistance with

designated parking and will assist with senior parking in the bus loop.

When gym full-capacity is reached, guests will be directed by the deputy to the theater.

Visitors are allowed into the gym at 2:00 p.m.

Graduation starts at 4:00 p.m. Doors are closed. There is no entering at that time.

Anyone exiting will not be readmitted.

Principal reads to audience:

Graduation Welcome 2018

“To the parents, grandparents, other

relatives, and friends of our graduates:

Good afternoon. I am Gayle Weaver, Principal of

Northview High School. On behalf of our faculty and

students, I welcome you to the graduation ceremony for the

Class of 2018.

To the parents, grandparents, other relatives, and friend of

our graduates, we are so pleased to have you at this special

celebration.

This ceremony is steeped in tradition. It is a formal

ceremony which has been organized in the same way,

regardless of nation or country. I urge the audience to act

in a respectful manner so that each graduate may be

recognized appropriately. Each family deserves the right to

hear their graduate’s name and to see their graduate walk

across the stage.

We realize there may be unexpected situations, but we ask

that everyone remain seated until all of the seniors have

been recognized. It would be extremely appreciated for us

to afford an uninterrupted time for each senior.

Class of 2018.

Please rise for the Procession of Graduates and please

remain standing for the Pledge of Allegiance and the
