On the 10th of April, Halden celebrated its 350th year and Queen Sonja was one of many who came to the festivities. Fredriksten fortress plays a central role in Halden, and this holds true as well for the stamp that was issued on Halden's anniversary. The artist behind the beautiful engraving is Arild Yttri.

Anders Beer Wilse is one of Norway's greatest photographers. During the first half of the 20th century he photographed large parts of Norway. He left behind an invaluable photographic treasure - more than 160,000 pictures. For the 150th anniversary of his birth, Norway Post is issuing four stamps and a prestige booklet. Kristin Granli has designed the stamps. Svalbard was the only place in Norway that was able to see the total solar eclipse on the 20th of March. Norway Post has designed an envelope with a personalised stamp and a cancellation to mark the occasion. P.O. Box 9350

Anders Beer Wilse is Norway’s greatest photo- grapher of all times. He spearheaded a new type of photographic imagery in 1905 and in the process gave the people of Norway a modern self image. Wilse used his life and his career to create an enormous photo archive of Norwegian culture and society during the first half of the 1900s.

In 1907, Wilse publishes his first photography book, «Norske Vinterbilleder» (Norwegian Winter Roads). In 1909 the book «Bergensbanen: Kristiania – Bergen» (The Bergen Railway: Kristiania – Bergen) is published. The same winter he was sent to Finnmark and Nordland in the north of Norway for a new book. The result is «Lofoten og Lofotfisket» (Lofoten and Lofot Fishing). During the same year, Wilse’s first photographic artistic folder, «Norsk Natur» (Norwegian Nature), was printed using the photogravure technique. A new artistic folder was printed in 1913, «Norsk Natur: Vinter» (Norwegian Nature: Winter), with 12 plates in exquisite intaglio.

Total solar eclipseThe 20th of March marked the date of a world-unique event on Svalbard.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the sun is completely covered by the moon. Svalbard was the only place in Norway that was able to see the total solar eclipse. There is considerable interest in this phenomenon throughout the world, and many of Svalbard›s hotels had been fully booked for a long time. Several cruise ship lines had also arranged to be in Svalbard on this day.

Norway Post has now designed an envelope with a personal stamp and a cancellation from the occasion. The next time this will occur is 2061, so order your envelope today!
