    Objectives

    to provide assistance from Institute of MarineResearch, Bergen, Norway to the Marine FisheriesDepartment (MFD) in the process of chartering a

    suitable survey vessel and

    to provide training to enhance the survey competence atMFD such that MFD will be able to conduct acousticand trawl resources surveys. to seek Norwegian

    Participants from MFD and collaborating Pakistaniinstitutions will be trained

    Resources surveys and stock assessment of the fisheries

    resources will be completed which will be used forsustainable fisheries management purpose.

    Norwegian scientist on fisheries acoustics will visitPakistan to participate in offshore pelagic fish resourcessurvey

    COMPETENCE STRENGTHENING IN FISHERYINSTITUTIONS IN PAKISTAN

    Institutional review carried out in June-July 2007 and report

    submitted in August 2007.

    Two staff members of MFD are visiting Norway for

    training on fish handling and quality control in April 2010.

    Further actions related to training of staff to be recruitedunder development project and those being recruited on

    non-developmental side of Marine Fisheries Department

    Strengthened competence and capacity in fish qualitycontrol at MFD

    Strengthened MFD Training Centre by trained trainersin quality related aspects in modern fishing, fish

    handling and onboard processing. Tow staff of MFD will visit Norway during April 2010

    to attend the 4 week training course on Fish handlingand Quality.

    Tow staff of MFD will visit Norway during June 2010to attend the 3week training course in laboratory workrelated to analyses of fish quality

    Benefit to country

    Helped in conduction of stock assessment in coastaland offshore waters of Pakistan (after a period oftwenty years).

    Enhancing manpower capabilities of Marine FisheriesDepartment in field of stock assessment

    The result of the surveys supported by the Norwegianproject will enable to develop management plan for the

    fisheries sector which may bring about changes in thesocio-economic conditions of the coastal communitiesand enhancing contribution of fisheries in GDP.
