Biggest loser challenge: donations and pledges We now know the biggest loser. We also know that a total of 14 kilogrammes were lost. Please make your donations through Ms Chioma by Monday 22nd June 2015. The donations will be added to those collected on Pyjama Day and will be handed to the Keeping It Real Foundation on Tuesday 23rd June 2015.

Costume Day – Thursday 25th June 2015 Costume Day will be on Thursday 25th June 2015. Students are encouraged to come to school dressed as their favourite book characters. Please note that this is not a mufti day. If students do not come dressed as book characters, they should wear their full school uniforms. UKEAS (UK Education Advisory Service) Fair – Thursday 25th June 2015 UKEAS offers free expert advice on student visa applications to the United Kingdom. They will have an education fair on Thursday 25th June 2015 at Golden Tulip Hotel, GRA, Port Harcourt. Representatives from a number of UK universities will also be at the fair. The fair will start at 10am and end by 5pm. It could be an opportunity to get free UK visa advice and information from UK universities. Dash For Your House Dash For Your House will be on Tuesday 30th June 2015. Students will compete in various track and field events in their respective houses: Gandhi, Churchill, Lincoln and Mandela. Students should come to school dressed in sports clothes on this day. Parents are encouraged to come and cheer their children as they compete. The schedule of events will be announced shortly. Chicken Licken: An Early Years Production Mark your calendars for 3rd July! The children in our Nursery, Foundation and Reception classes have begun learning the script and songs for a theatrical production of the children’s classic, Chicken Licken. These children were born to perform, so you will not want to miss the show. Calendar for the 2015/2016 academic year The calendar for the next academic year can be found on the next page. 12th June 2015 Dear Parents, The past two years saw many good things, with great achievements being made by the young people of NIS. It has been a great honour and privilege for me to be the Head of Primary at such a wonderful school in Nigeria like the Norwegian International School. We have a very special community. It is with a heavy heart that I announce to you that this will be my last term at NIS. I will relocate to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia at the end of this term and take with me many happy memories of this great school. I will greatly miss the students, teachers, parents and greater school community as I bid farewell to Port Harcourt and pursue other wonderful opportunities life has blessed me with. I appreciate the opportunities for professional development and growth at NIS. The time has come for me to move on to other educational endeavors. I would like to thank the students, staff, parents and governors for giving me the opportunity to further my professional and academic career here in the city of Port Harcourt. The governors have worked together with Dr Tayo and I to recruit an excellent and very capable Head of Primary to take my place from August. I am convinced that the arrangements that have been made will leave the school in very good hands indeed. Over the past few months, I have been in communication with Ms Nkechi Fakoya, and I am very impressed with her experience and philosophy of education. I have had several opportunities to speak with Ms Nkechi, and I am confident that she has the skills and passion required to work with the students, staff and parents. I intend to do everything I can to facilitate a smooth, effective and efficient transition to the new Head of Primary. As always, I am delighted to speak to parents and see it as a major part of my job. I wish Norwegian International School continued growth and success in the future. Meet Ms Nkechi Greetings from Cairo! I am very excited about joining the NIS team as Head of Primary this year and I am grateful to God for the opportunity to serve. I am aware of the school's commitment to providing high quality education and cannot wait to be a part of the journey to excellence. At my current school in Egypt, where I have been for six years, I worked hard to raise academic standards throughout the school, with particular attention paid to the strands of the Cambridge International Primary Programme. This is evident in results from the Cambridge Primary Checkpoint exams, which continue to improve. Results from mandatory national exams are also commendable as we prepare children for life both at home and abroad. I enjoy moving around the school, interacting with students, teachers and parents. I feel that this is an essential part of developing a community of learners, rather than just a collection of people who happen to be in the same school. An aspect of my job that I thoroughly enjoy is meeting the students and getting to know them on a one-to-one basis. This is no mean task when dealing with over 700 pupils but it is worth the effort. In my experience, I have found that this helps us to make the best decisions for the students both socially and academically. At my current school, you might find me teaching a class, resolving conflicts between 'best friends', fixing a broken toy, learning to play a game during break time or having a very serious discussion about global warming with children. I believe in educating ‘the whole child’. Academic achievement goes hand-in-hand with attributes such as politeness, resilience and respect, and with skills such as teamwork and self-discipline. Learning is a lifelong endeavour and I am passionate about ensuring that a school provides the right environment for learning. I have been able to create an atmosphere of trust in the school such that members of the school community are able to share their ideas, mistakes are viewed as useful learning tools, and learning is seen as a process that involves effective communication and collaboration with others. I have developed a staff appraisal method that encourages constant reflection on one's practice and taking practical steps to grow professionally. I have coached and mentored staff (teaching and non-teaching) on different occasions to help them on their learning journey. The importance of parental engagement cannot be overemphasised and as such I always look for ways to engage and not just involve parents in the children's learning. I have held 'learning' workshops for parents which helped to give a better understanding of how children learn and how best to support them in their learning. I keep up to date with current trends in education and recently completed a leadership and management course for senior leaders (ILMP) organised by Fieldwork Education in the UK. During the course, I had the opportunity to interact with leaders of learning from different continents. We all agreed that effective learning had to be the focus of a school and children need to view learning as 'fun'. To this end, I hope to provide opportunities for children to have a great time while in school. I do look forward to meeting everyone at NIS in the near future.
