What about Greek and Latin?

• That is Greek in Greek and Latin in Latin!

• ‘It is all Greek and Latin to me’ is an English idiom to express that something is not comprehensible.

What is localization?

• Only 8% of the world’s population sees English as English

• How do we cater to the rest of the world?

• Localization is the solution – Translation of a product in different languages

Is a product global when the whole world can read it?

Yes. But it does not stop there. It also means, does the world read it with clarity and quality.

Is localization a hassle?

More business

More work

Planned approach

Thought out

design

Scalable localized product

Scalable does not mean providing provision to adding more languages to your list but also how well does the design accommodate new characters and symbols introduced in every language so often.

How is localization applied technically?

www.sample.com

French - www.sample.com

property file

Japaneese - www.sample.com

property file

Arabic - www.sample.com

property file

Case study:

Product: Website - www.sample.com Requirement: Translate into 3 languages

in addition to English Languages: French, Japanese, Arabic

Behind the scenes:

• There are three property files maintained for each of these three languages• Each property file contains several key-value pairs

Key – Variable (Example: Hello - Bonjour)Value – Corresponding Translated Text

On a technical note

As we know characters must be represented as numbers so compilers can deal with them. Unicoding is one way of encoding.

Unicoding has:

a built-in catalogue of million characters covering 90 scripts which includes charts for visual reference

a coding methodology (encoding/decoding)

a bi-directional display of text

What is the cost involved in localization?

As one moves towards production / release the cost of translation and testing gets higher – because translation firms go by package not by number of words.

• A tester should be involved right from the design phase when the translation is happening in parallel.

• It is always good to work with the Business Analyst as the “Do Not Translate” list is being prepared.

What does a typical localization testingchecklist comprise of?

• Hardware – Localized Keyboard• Software – (IME) Editor, Copy / Paste, Character

Map, etc.Input

• Font determination• Dynamic text handlingOutput

• All translated text is available• Embedded text in images are translated• Database fields for large text• Do not translate checklist

Content

• Font - Hard coded or externalized• Given font is installedSettings

Jots for Developers and TestersD

evel

oper • Start with the end in mind

• Adaptable• Scalable

• Number of characters• Usage of symbols

• Keep it simple• Easy to follow and update• Easy to maintain

Test

er • Ensure before, test after• Input / output is ready• Settings are ready• Translated text is available

• Prevention is better than cure• Be careful while using

gestures, emoticons, symbols, etc.

• Let the expert review (if possible)

What are the common defects found in localization?

Defect Possible ReasonText appearing as question marks or boxes Missing fontMissing translation Missing key-value pair, hard coded text, etc.Truncated string, overlapping / misalignment of GUI elements and controls, etc.

Text expansion

Data lossThe language is multi-byte and it is not accommodated in the database.

Formatting issues like in Arabic where text goes from left to right

GUI alterations

Missing translation in embedded text (in images / bitmaps)

Oversight

Hot key issues like duplication Automatic hot key assignmentMissing or broken functionality GUI alterations

Testing Hints:

• Same defect in all similar byte languages• Understand the structure behind the scene• Always know the territory you are translating for

Sample test cases and defects

Test Cases

Test Case ID Language Description

SAMTC005- French- Japanese- Arabic

To verify the entire user name is carried forward without truncation.

SAMTC010- French- Japanese- Arabic

To verify the username is displayed in the desired font / colour.

SAMTC015- French- Japanese- Arabic

To verify the welcome text reads "Welcome <user name>“.

Defects

Defect ID Description

1024 Japanese: The user name in the welcome text is truncated.

1056 Arabic: Space is missing between the word "Welcome" and the username.

1088 All languages: The word "Welcome" is not translated.

RequirementRequirement ID Description

What can be practiced to overcomechallenges?

• Data

Challenge 1

• Easily identifiable errors

Impact• Be well

prepared for testing

Practiced Approach

• Scalability

Challenge 2

• Growing in the market gets difficult

Impact•Ensure variable mapping is flexible during design

Practiced Approach

• Browser

Challenge 3

•Users are trying the latest browser

Impact•Be updated – Study new browser features

Practiced Approach

• Humungous test effort

Challenge 4

• Missing the most important

Impact• Pick

combinations to test

Practiced Approach
