Nota Bene TAKE NOTE of THIS A PUBLICATION FOR THE MEDICAL STAFF OF JEFFERSON HEALTH – NEW JERSEY The Lung Nodule Center at Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center – Washington Township Timothy Dombrowski, DO, MPH Vice President & Chief Medical Officer SPRING 2018 Dear Fellow Physicians, The Lung Nodule Center at Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center – Washington Township provides care for patients who have been diagnosed with a lung nodule. Lung nodules can be single or multiple, solid or sub-solid, and – depending on their size and characteristics – low-risk or high-risk. Patients with medical histories who are considered high-risk are: • Individuals, age 55-77, who have a smoking history of at least 30 pack-years • Individuals who are either current smokers or have quit less than 15 years ago. The preferred study for screening lung nodule patients is a low-dose CT chest scan. The Jefferson Health – New Jersey multidisciplinary lung nodule team consists of pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, interventional radiologists, radiologists, pathologists, a nurse navigator, a certified tobacco treatment specialist, and certified medical assistants, who provide high-level care for lung nodule patients. Our team determines each patient’s risk through an in-depth approach that involves a detailed evaluation and discussion of imaging results and the patient’s health history. The team then utilizes either the “Guidelines for Management of Incidental Pulmonary Nodules Detected by CT Images: From the Fleischner Society 2017”¹ or the “American College of Radiology Lung-RADS Classification”² to make recommendations for subsequent screening or tissue sampling. If a biopsy is needed to establish a tissue diagnosis, state-of-the-art procedures – such as electromagnetic navigational bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound or percutaneous fine needle aspiration – are combined to diagnose and stage the cancer, and expedite appropriate therapy. At the patient’s appointment, he or she will be seen by both a pulmonologist and a thoracic surgeon. To facilitate the best possible patient experience, our oncology nurse navigator oversees the entire process, schedules appointments, and monitors follow-up care for each patient. If indicated, she also counsels the patient on smoking cessation methods and techniques. Additionally, she provides patient education regarding the disease, diagnostic procedures and treatment, and works with a social worker to facilitate care if any barriers exist. Dear Fellow Physicians,

The Lung Nodule Center at Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center – Washington Township provides care for patients who have been diagnosed with a lung nodule. Lung nodules can be single or multiple, solid or sub-solid, and – depending on their size and characteristics – low-risk or high-risk. Patients with medical histories who are considered high-risk are:• Individuals, age 55-77, who have a smoking history of at least 30 pack-years • Individuals who are either current smokers or have quit less than 15 years ago.

The preferred study for screening lung nodule patients is a low-dose CT chest scan. Jefferson Health – New Jersey made a $5,000 donation in honor of its Medical Staff for Doctors’ Day to the Food Bank of South Jersey. This generous donation is equivalent to donating 25,000 meals and helping more than a dozen families for a year!

Dr. Jim Baird (Emergency Medicine) recently spoke at a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) press conference, held in Camden, to launch the DEA’s new 360 Strategy to help combat the area’s heroin/opioid crisis. The 360 Strategy is a three-pronged approach that brings together area law enforcement, hospitals, and community leaders to exchange information, keep open communication lines with each other, and share beneficial resources. Dr. Baird

also spoke in March at a press conference announcing a collaborative new program where area hospital systems (Jefferson Health – New Jersey, Cooper and Virtua) will provide Narcan to Camden County law enforcement officers so they can

save the lives of people who experience opioid overdoses.

Dr. David V. Condoluci (Infectious Diseases) recently represented Jefferson Health at the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute’s Quarterly Quality Breakfast. Dr. Condoluci was one of seven panel members at the breakfast, which recognized the 10 NJ hospitals that received Leapfrog “Top Hospital” designations in December. Jefferson Stratford Hospital was named a “Top Teaching Hospital,” a prestigious distinction less than 40 hospitals nationwide received.

Dr. Joseph N. Daniel (Orthopaedic Surgery) recently facilitated an 8-hour Sub-specialty Cadaver Lab to educate Junior Residents at RowanSOM about foot and ankle surgical approaches and procedures. The goal was to help the Junior Residents better understand 3-dimensional

anatomy, the use of instruments and power tools, and to critically analyze their strengths and weaknesses in the OR setting.

Jefferson Health – New Jersey has been awarded a 2018 Top Workplaces honor by Philadelphia Media Network, which marks the fifth consecutive year we have been named a Top Workplace!

The recognition is based solely on employee feedback from more than 3,800 associates that was gathered through a third-party survey administered by research partner Energage, LLC (formerly WorkplaceDynamics). The anonymous survey measured several aspects of workplace culture, including alignment, execution and connection, to name a few.

“For the fifth year in a row, the survey results confirm that we are an excellent place to work – a place that our associates believe in and where they feel valued,” said President Joseph W. Devine.

Devine called the 2018 Top Workplace recognition “a true reflection” of the organization’s positive culture and commitment to its team members, as well as to the communities they serve.

“Top Workplaces is more than just recognition,” said Doug Claffey, CEO of Energage. “Our research shows organizations that earn the award attract better talent, experience lower turnover, and are better equipped to deliver bottom-line results. Their leaders prioritize and carefully craft a healthy workplace culture that supports employee engagement.”

Maternity Center at Jefferson Washington Township Hospital Receives Designation as a Blue Distinction® Center for Maternity Care

The Maternity Center at Jefferson Washington Township Hospital has been recognized by Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey with a Blue Distinction® Center for Maternity Care designation.

The Blue Distinction® Specialty Care Program is a national program recognizing health care facilities that demonstrate expertise in delivering specialty care safely, effectively and cost-efficiently. Blue Distinction®-designated maternity centers have demonstrated improved overall patient satisfaction

and a lower percentage of early elective deliveries.

President Joseph W. Devine, FACHE, said the designation “speaks volumes about the great care our team delivers day in and day out. Patient safety and patient satisfaction have always been two of our top priorities, and this designation shows we

provide top-notch care to all expectant mothers who come to us for maternity services.”

Blue Distinction® facilities are evaluated on multiple criteria, including quality, safety and cost efficiency. Only hospitals that meet the standards are recognized as Blue Distinction® Centers.

Jefferson Health’s three New Jersey-based hospitals have each maintained “Exemplar” status for their NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders) program. The Jefferson Health Care Center, a skilled nursing facility and sub-acute rehabilitation center, has been named a NICHE “Member.”

NICHE is the only international designation indicating a hospital’s commitment to excellence in the care of patients 65 and older. NICHE “Exemplar” and “Member” status recognize the ongoing dedication of Jefferson Health to geriatric care, its success in the implementation of high-quality, system-wide interventions and initiatives that demonstrate commitment to the care of older adults.

“Exemplar” status, the highest of four possible program levels, was awarded following an evaluation of the current state and future goals of our NICHE program. The Jefferson Health Care Center’s “Member” status

means the facility is devoted to providing patient-centered care for older adults. Through NICHE, the Health Care Center will work to provide evidence-based,interdisciplinary approaches that promote better outcomes, positive experiences, and improved care for older adults, with the goal of earning “Exemplar” status.

“We are honored to once again be recognized by the NICHE program,” said Chief Nurse Executive & Vice President of Clinical Services Helene Burns, DNP, MSN, RN, NEA-BC. “These impressive designations signal our resolve to provide high-level, patient-centered care for older adults.”
