    SYNOPSIS

    COMPUTER HARDWARE course gives students

a basic overview of the hardware and

software that will be utilised in Information

Processing. This course is the study of

personal computer PC hardware including PC

    assembly and upgrading, and installing

connecting peripherals. Students will learnhardware troubleshooting techniques used to

    identify and rectify computer faults.

    Computer?

    A computer is

    a programmable machine designed to

sequentially and automatically carry out a

sequence of arithmetic or logical operations.

The particular sequence of operations can be

changed readily, allowing the computer to

solve more than one kind of problem

    Describe the evolution of computers

It was in 1937 that John V. Atanasoff devised the

first digital electronic computer. Atanasoff and

Clifford Berry came up with the ABC prototype in

the November of 1939. Its computations were

based on a vacuum tube and it used regenerative

    capacitor memory.

    Describe the evolution of computers

    Konrad Zuses electromechanical Z Machines,especially the Z3 of 1941 was a notable

achievement in the evolution of computers. It

was the first machine to include binary and

    floating-point arithmetic and a considerable

    amount of programmability.

    Describe the evolution of computers

    The Harvard Mark I of 1944 was a large-scale

    electromechanical computer with less

programmability. It was another step forward

    in the evolution of computers

    SABRE Reservation system (1960)

An outgrowth of the SAGE miltary computer

system for tracking aircraft, SABRE was the first

    commercial computer-based airline

reservation system when it came online in

1962. A version of this system is still used to

    handle airline reservations today
