Messages from the Headteacher
Dear Parent/Carers
Safer Travel to School - After half term we will return to darker mornings and evenings and it is essential that
students are travelling to and from school in a safe manner. Parents may be aware that there have been some recent
reports of strangers in the local area acting suspiciously. I would urge all parents to make clear to their children the
need to be vigilant and take care at all times, particularly on the way to and from school. If you become aware of any
child who has been approached at any time, then please contact the police and the school.
Operation Christmas Child - A reminder that after half term the Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes will be
collected by the Samaritan’s Purse Charity. This is a wonderful charity that delivers the shoeboxes to children around
the world for whom the shoebox will be their only gift this Christmas. Each tutor group have been challenged to col-
lect 4 shoeboxes and we are hoping to beat last years total of 200! Please support as generously as you can - all
donations will be delivered to very grateful children.
Congratulations to Mr Bullock - Many congratulations to Mr Bullock and his partner Anne on the arrival of baby
Oliver Matthew weighing 7lbs 5oz last week.
Thank You - As always a huge thank you for your continued support which helps us to achieve such high standards.
Punctuality and attendance are much improved and the average attendance for the half term is over 96%. Our new
punctuality drive has resulted in excellent punctuality to school and lessons. I am always very proud of the standard of
our school uniform and how smart our students look. After half term students will need to start wearing their winter
coats—please ensure that these are plain navy blue or black.
It has been a very busy but successful half term and I hope you all have a very happy and relaxing holiday.
Mrs Marina Kelly, Headteacher

Blood Brothers Review 2016
On Wednesday 12 October 2016, Cardinal Newman’s GCSE Drama students travelled to
Birmingham’s Hippodrome Theatre to watch William Russell’s, Blood Brothers.
The night was enjoyable and a great experience for us all because the performance had given us ideas
on how to progress with our coursework and had given us a realistic view of life on the stage. The
music soared, the audience laughed and cried together and it was a very entertaining performance.
We would like to thank Miss Rimmer, Mr Ward, Miss Devine, Mrs Haggarty and Mrs Dwyer for their support as the night wouldn’t have
happened without them.

St Elizabeth’s Parish Mass
On Sunday 16 October, Fr Moses and the Parish of St
Elizabeth welcomed us to help lead the liturgy at the Parish
Mass. The readings challenged us to be people of prayer and
to demonstrate our faith through prayer. The students read,
sang, took part in the offertory and served on the Altar.
Students had also spent time preparing artwork to reflect
the theme of the Mass. This was displayed in the Church and left for the Parish to keep. Thank you to all students involved and for St
Elizabeth’s Parish for welcoming us.

Netball
On Monday 17 October the Year 10 and 11
netball teams travelled to President Kennedy to
play two Coventry Schools’ League netball
matches.
Year 11 were 4-2 up at half time and went onto draw the game 5-5,
with Meadow Kelly-Evans scoring a disallowed goal in the final
minutes! They just missed out on 3 points.
The Year 10 match was very fast paced with all 7 players working very
hard, unfortunately Cardinal Newman lost the game 8-6.
Well done to all the dedicated girls that were involved in the
matches.
Thursday 20th October brought Sidney Stringer to Cardinal Newman
to play two Coventry Schools’ League matches.
Year 10 won 16-4, an excellent performance from all students with
Tamzin Spandley scoring 12 of the goals and gaining player of the
match.
The 8B team played their first match of the season and won 12-1.
Shannel Moseka scoring 10 goals and receiving player of the match.
Well done to all girls involved.

Year 10 English Language End of Unit Exam Practice
After half term, all students in Year 10 will be sitting their English Language Paper 1, end of Unit b examination
(Creative Writing). They will be expected to choose one task out of a possible four and write an engaging, gothic
story in timed conditions (45 minutes approx). Students have been constructing their gothic stories over the past 3
weeks and will be taking these home over half term to revise.
A revision PowerPoint for this can be found on SMHW. Ways you can support are as follows:
Ensure students have a gothic story between 500-600 words; check for accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar; ensure the story
includes clear paragraphing and structure; ensure descriptive detail is evident through the use of language devices; use a thesaurus to help
develop vocabulary; help condense student stories onto revision cards to help them recall effective phrases, vocabulary, and other aspects of
the story; encourage students to write out their story in timed conditions, rehearsing how to fit it to different titles.
Group 10a will sit the unit exam on Wednesday 2 November and 10b on Wednesday 9 November. We hope that this will help them
prepare for the real English Language examinations in Summer 2017.

Year 11 English Literature
1. Monday after school - 'Compulsory Period 6 Lit'
After half term, all students in Year 11 will be expected to attend
'Period 6 Lit' with their English teachers. This will compliment the
current teaching ongoing in English lessons, and will ensure that
students are fully prepared for their two Literature exams at the
end of the year. Attendance is compulsory for all of Year 11.
2. Literature Revision Guides - £2.00
each
All Year 11 students have received letters
about the revision guides on sale from the
English Department, at a discounted price of
£2.00 (RRP £5.99). These are available for
each of the Literature set texts: An
Inspector Calls, A Christmas Carol and
Macbeth. Well done to the many students
who have purchased these already, but
there are still students who have not.
These will be extremely beneficial for use
at home, in lessons and for exam revision.

Integrity
In our school we believe that Integrity is one of the most important life skills because it is
composed of many other powerful life skills — patience, honesty, responsibility, dependability,
accountability and caring. Over the next two weeks take time to think about your actions and
words. Do they show Integrity? Have you taken action when you needed to?
“Real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody’s going to know whether you did it or not.” ― Oprah Winfrey

Birmingham Catholic Partnership
This year’s Birmingham Catholic Partnership music event was held at Bishop Walsh in Birmingham. 12 schools from
around the Diocese were invited to perform in either Dance, Drama or Music. We took performers from Year 9 and the
Sixth Form. Mia Bruce, Maya Bangura, Alex Bujor, Keiran Purewal, Niamh Joyce and Cassie Shine performed Flashlight and
showed the level of talent on offer from our Year 9 students. Connor O'Shea, Simran Torascar, Tabitha Dharmadeva and Tanya Masiza followed
afterwards with an Irish tune, 'The Parting Glass'. All students demonstrated the high level of talent we have here at Cardinal Newman.

Performing Arts Showcase
The first half term has been quite intensive in Performing Arts and on 19 October at 6pm it all came together. With a full
Canon Diamond Theatre t,he Cardinal Newman’s Performing Arts Showcase opened with the Cardinal Newman Dance
Crew showcasing this year’s musical, 'High School Musical'. This was followed by a variety of Music acts from Years 9 and
10 performing Rock, Motown and Pop. In the second act, Year 7 students who attend Drama Club, performed their
themes, Fairy Tales and Monologues, and also a devised piece on the Hillsborough Disaster which made the night even
more diverse. Smaller duets and Irish dancing, as well as the new School Hymn, all found their way into a packed pro-
gramme. Well done to all the acts involved and thank you to the students behind the scenes and the staff who helped out.

Year 13 Frantic Assembly Trip
On Thursday 20 October our Year 13 Drama and
Theatre Studies students were provided with an
opportunity to watch a prestigious physical theatre
company live on stage at the Warwick Arts Centre.
Frantic Assembly are renowned for their physical and
emotional pieces that create theatre in a different and
unconventional way to unfold a narrative that
communicates a message to the audience. The performance of 'Things I Know to be True', was
beautifully touching and bold as it told the story of a family and marriage through the eyes of
four grown siblings, struggling to define themselves beyond their parents' love and
expectations. The students found the physical elements of the performance thrilling and this
has inspired them to create and devise physical theatre within their current theatre unit of
devised theatre. They will be embedding some of Frantic Assembly's key ideologies within their
work to communicate their own personal message to the audience.
