Messages from the Headteacher
Dear Parent/Carers
The headlines this week have been all about the General Election and yesterday we had our own General Election in
school. Our results appear to have been an indicator of how the country was going to vote as students voted
overwhelmingly for the Labour candidate Jaiker Chauhan. Well done to Jaiker and also to Latay Lynch who represented
the Liberal Democrats and Kirsty Croaken the Conservative Party. I hope that our newly elected Government will
ensure that they consider the impact of the funding cuts in school budgets and ensure that proper investment is made in
our young people and their futures!
Exams - Well done to all our students who have conducted themselves so well throughout the exam season. Students
and staff have worked incredibly hard in preparation for these exams and we hope that their hard work is rewarded with
excellent exam results in the summer. Our team of Examination Invigilators have been really impressed with their
excellent attitude and maturity throughout. A particular well done to students in Year 10 who have worked really hard
in preparation for their GCSE English Language exam that they are taking a year early.
Lourdes Trip 2017 - As always, it is wonderful to hear about the hard work and commitment of our young people
who went on the annual pilgrimage to Lourdes during half term. Our students once again did us proud and were an
inspiration in their unending acts of kindness and mercy. Well done to Miss Keane and Miss Isherwood who were
awarded their 5 year service medal and also Tiegan Feeney and former student, Eryn McNally, who were awarded their 3
year service medal. Thank you to Mr Tomlin who provided transport to and from the airport..
Wedding Congratulations - Congratulations to Miss O’Hare and former Senior Assistant Headteacher, Mr Marano,
who were married over the half term holiday. We wish Mr & Mrs Marano a very long and happy marriage.
Welcome - This week we welcomed three new members of staff to Cardinal Newman - Mr James Canning (History),
Mr Alex Heyes (Mathematics) and Mr Nathan Osborn (English). We hope that they will be very happy and successful at
Cardinal Newman.
I hope you have a lovely weekend! Best wishes, Mrs Marina Kelly, Headteacher

Aspire Value - Achievement
As we have begun our exam season it is only
right that we focus on achievement over the
next two weeks. Each of us should focus on
using our talents and our time in school and home to ensure we achieve in
all aspects of school life and fully develop our intellectual abilities and their
individual gifts and talents.
"Good things come to those who wait. Better things come to those who
try. The best things come to those who never give up."
Weekly Prayer
Compassionate God and Father of all, we are horrified at violence in so many parts of
the world. It seems that none are safe, and some are terrified.
Hold back the hands that kill and maim; turn around the hearts that hate. Grant
instead your strong Spirit of Peace - peace that passes our understanding but changes
lives. Amen
Cardinal Newman students go Voting!
On Thursday 8th June when the rest of the country were making important
decisions about the future of our country, students at Cardinal Newman were
also having their say. Students had been presented with the manifestos of the
three parties running in school during tutor time in the run up to the election
which had allowed them to think about the party they felt would be best for
their future. The polling station was very busy all day even with the poor weather conditions. The Student Council and
members of Year 12 manned the polling station all day and did an excellent job ensuring that everyone moved through the
polling booths smoothly. The school community were updated throughout the day on the exit polls. Miss Goodwin’s Year 9
English class interviewed voters and candidates in order to create a report on the event which will be shared in next week’s
newsletter. A huge thank you to our three candidates who took part Latay Lynch for Liberal Democrats, Kirsty Croaken for
the Conservative Party and Jaiker Chauhan for the Labour Party. The results are as follows
Liberal Democratic 76
Labour Party 675
Conservative 55
Spoiled papers 55
Congratulations to Jaiker on winning the election in school. If you would like to see the manifestos for each of the parties their
election video is on our school website.

Coventry Schools Cricket
Semi Final
On Thursday 25 May, the Year 7
Cricket team progressed through to
the Coventry Schools final, convincingly beating Coundon
Court by 10 wickets.
Bowling first, Coundon were restricted by some very
good bowling to only 51 from their allocation of 16 overs.
Wickets were taken at regular intervals by Thomas
Campbell, Callum Twaites, Dan Baker and Thomas
Sharman. There was also some great fielding by Callum
Twaites and Finn Smart in effecting three run outs.
When batting, Ethan Skilling and Tyler Lynch ensured that
the run chase was relatively straightforward. Neither
getting out whilst reaching the target in only 7.4 overs!
An excellent first game of the year where the whole team
contributed in some way towards the successful outcome
of this match.
Now on to the final!

Lourdes 2017
During the half term a group of
eleven students took part in the
Birmingham Diocesan pilgrimage
to Lourdes.
We worked in the hospital as
handmaids and brancardiers looking after sick pilgrims who are from a variety of backgrounds.
During this time we assisted the pilgrims in an array of services and ensured they were comfortable
throughout. In addition to this, we took the pilgrims in their free time to relax and enjoy
themselves. This may have been to the café or to a gift shop. Our work in the hospital consisted
of serving meals to the pilgrims, taking them out and ensuring the hospitality was at a high standard.
This experience has changed outlook on our lives and reinforced our faith. We are thankful for all
those who kindly donated to our fundraising and all the support that allowed us to experience this
unforgettable journey.
We would like to thank Carmel Keane, Geraldine Isherwood, Amy Kelly and Alex Hindmarsh for
being the best team leaders.
