ED ‘Hamburger’
Energy Conversions
1st Station
GPE of the hamburger is converted into KE as it travels down the ramp
When the hamburger hits the ramp, the KE is transferred to the soccer ball, giving it KE
2nd Station
Having KE, the soccer ball drops off the table and continue moving, hitting the book
KE is transferred from the soccer ball to the book, causing the book to topple
3rd Station
As the 1st book topples, it creates a domino effect and it continues throughout
4th Station
As the KE is being transferred to the small blue book, it topples and lands onto a string (attached to the bottle and the end of the chair).
4th Station
As there is tension in the string, the bottle topples over, releasing the string attached to the ball which it is sitting on
5th Station
The ball is released after the bottle toppled and it hits the ‘play’ button on the keyboard, starting the song ‘London Bridge’
5th Station
As the ball still has KE, it travels down the keys and hit the book, once again the domino effect is triggered
6th Station
When the blue book topples, the KE is being transferred to the green toy car, causing it to move down the ramp
7th Station
As there is tension in the string, the eraser is being pulled away from the wheel when the car hits the string, freeing the robot
There’s a string attached from the bottle to an eraser which is in front of the robot’s wheel
8th Station
The robot travels on the track and finally hits the book, which topples onto the bottle, releasing the cotton twine, which is attached to another bottle[not shown]
9th Station
When the cotton twine is released, the bottle drops onto the toothpaste, thus squeezing it
Mistakes & Challenges
Mistakes
The soccer ball went out of track and failed to start the domino effect
The gaps between the books were too far and some failed to continue the domino effect
Mistakes
The tension in the string tied to the water bottle was too small, allowing the book to land onto the string without triggering any other movements
The ball was not directly above the ‘play’ button of the keyboard and no music was played even after the ball was released
Challenges
External forces like wind exerted a force on part of the domino chain and messed up our Rube Goldberg machine
Carelessness in our movements caused mess-ups in our preparations
Challenges
We did not manage to build our machine according to our original design due to miscalculations and misjudgments
We had to make use of common household objects to substitute those that we lacked
