It is centrally important in the development of an Islamic approach to science and the philosophy of science to keep away from metaphysics as a substantive ground of knowledge. The roots of scientific Ahqam in the Qur'an are distinct from and opposed to the perceptual basis of speculative philosophy. The universe, according to the Qur'an, is a purposeful and definitive spring of unified knowledge. We discover this spring by substantive reference to the Qur'an, the authentic Sunnah and continuous discursion (Ijtehad).
The Islamic philosophers drifted from such epistemic-ontic roots of the Qur'an when they took to metaphysics as the scientific premise. By so doing they were inevitably driven to rely upon and borrow from Greek philosophy. The Muslim rationalists thus introduced pantheism into the framework of what otherwise could have been a pure Islamic approach to scientific reasoning.
Western philosophy of science is derived from the primordial premise of metaphysics. Hence we have the open-ended universes of Popper and Kant; the Judaic influences of the Vienna Circle; and the empiricism of Descartes and Hume. The debate between science and metaphysics is an unresolved one in modern philosophy of science.
