The 13 Colonies

• A lot of people who came to the New World set up places to live along the Eastern Coast of North America.

The 13 Colonies

• These settlements were known as the 13 colonies and were controlled by England. •A colony is a settlement set up by people far from their home country, be where they are ruled by their home country

The Northern Colonies or New England

The Northern Colonies or New England

•Geography: poor rocky soil (not good for farming)•Climate: very cold and harsh winters•Resources: lumber (wood), fur, lots of fish

•Economy: they built lots of ships and did a lot of fishing•People: they were very religious and had strict rules

about religion

The Middle Colonies

The Middle Colonies

•Geography: rich, fertile soil (great for growing wheat)•Climate: warmer climate with a long growing season •Resources: lots of grains and wheat to bake bread! Known as the bread basket

The Middle Colonies

•Economy: they built big cities and they were known for their trading ports •People: they were peaceful and got along with the Native Americans. They also did not believe in slavery and had religious freedom

The Southern Colonies

•Geography: lots of rich soil (great for farming)•Climate: long hot summers and short cold winters •Resources: grew crops like corn, tobacco, rice, and indigo

•Economy: farms grew lots of crops•People: most people were farmers. There were small farms and large farms called plantations

• The first settlement in Georgia was a city called Savannah • The man that helped to create the colony of Georgia was

Roles of the People

•Men: were the only ones who could vote to make laws • Puritans and Pilgrims: came to the colonies for religious freedom• Indentured Servants: paid to come to America but they had no money. They worked on farms for about 3-7 years and then were freed.

Roles of the People

•Artisans were people who made things that people purchased •Children: had to do lots of chores around the house and didn’t have much time to play.
