St. Kieran Catholic Church Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 11, 2019 Our soul waits for the LORD, who is our help and our shield. — Psalm 33:20 Notes from Fr. John T oday we celebrate the Ninteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The theme present in today's readings is Hope. Hope is looking forward to better things without really being able to see them. Experience strengthens our hope. Growing up dinner was always on the table at 5 o'clock. Later in life when I was an adult and going to visit my mother, I always hoped there would be a dinner waiting for me if I stopped in at five. Sure enough my hope was not disappointed. The experiences as a child made me hope, and my mom came through. It is the same for us and God. God’s blessings in the past teach us that we can trust God and that he will continue to take care of us. This is hope. The experience of Jesus’ death and Resurrection give us hope that we too will pass through death to new life. As Christians we are hope- ful that any darkness can turn to light in God. We are truly filled with hope. This Tuesday, August 13th, we will have our mandatory parent meeting for those who have chil- dren in St. Agnes School. For parents and grand- parents this is an exciting time to once again Turn over their children to the educational experience offered at St. Agnes. Not so much for the children. We as pastor, principal, and staff are filled with hope that this will be a great year for learning and new experiences for your children. The opening parent meeting gives us all a chance to start out on the same page and allows parents to meet their children’s teachers. The meeting begins this Tuesday at 6:30 PM in church. The first day of school is August 19th. It will be a full day of school beginning at 8 AM. We look forward to seeing everyone. Religious Education classes are also register- ing at this time for St. Agnes and St. Kieran. Mrs. Klopp is once again in the office and accepting appli- cations for the coming year. Registration will end on Friday, August 30th. There will be no exceptions to this date, because we have had open registration since April. Also, our Religious Education program is since April. Also, our Religious Education program is an eight-year program. So just as your children attend their daily school every year from Kindergarten until eighth grade, our religious education children do the same from grade one through eight. Within these eight years of classes the sacraments of Reconciliation, Holy communion and Confirmation are received. Once again, the sacraments happen within the eight years of religious education. We are not a fast food for faith. You can’t just drive by and hope to pick up a dollar meal/sacrament. Please get the word out. We take faith development very seriously in both the school and religious education program. This week will celebrate the feast of the Assumption of Mary. We see this as another sign of hope. Where Mary and the other saints have gone, we believe we also will go. There will be two masses on Thursday August 15th. There will be an 8 AM mass at St. Kieran and a 7 PM mass offered at St. Agnes that evening. Make sure you take note of this, so you get to the right church for mass. Together let us celebrate our Blessed Mother and her assumption into heaven. A few projects that we are working on at St. Agnes and St. Kieran. At St. Agnes we have been tuck pointing a number of areas of the church building. The constant bounding of the wrecking crew at St. James hospital has made it so our mortar and bricks are crumbling. We are working now so we don’t lose any of the face brick of the building. We are in consul- tation with the Archdiocese and the contractors at the hospital to come up with a solution to this problem. I will keep you informed. At St. Kieran we will be seal coating both of our parking lots in the near future. Over time wear and tear take a toll, as does the weather and so we are being proactive and having the work done now. When the sealing is complete, we will once again stripe the parking lots. This may mean a few weeks of inconve- nience, but the outcome will be worth the trouble. Thanks to everyone who support our projects through your continued financial support of the parishes.

Update on Recycle Containers at St. Kieran Church

As many of you know, two recycle containers are located in the east side parking lot. These are used to collect paper products for recycling and are owned by Midwest Paper Retriever. At one time, we received reimbursement for collecting recyclable materials. However, we have received no such payment since 2010. We have kept the containers to provide our parishioners and the surrounding community a place to recycle materials.

During the last few years, several people have used the containers to “dump” items such as couches, wall units, television sets, used windows and blinds, etc. The regular scavenger dumpster provided by Republic Services is also a frequent spot to dump items. Signs were placed on the regular dumpster to make it clear that this is not a “public” dumping spot; however, this just increased the amount of items left at the recycle containers. Our Maintenance Supervisor has to dispose of the detritus, sometimes having to use a chain saw or volunteer help to move things to the dumpster. On July 22, we received a notice from Midwest Paper Retriever that they would soon begin charging St. Kieran Church for use of the containers. We advised them to pick up their containers from our property. At this time, there is no confirmed date for pick-up of the containers. Until then, we advise our parishioners to cease dropping off recyclable materials; signs posted on the containers reiterate that there should be no more donations. Please spread the word that St. Kieran Church will no longer accept donations of recyclable materials. For our parishioners living in Chicago Heights, please refer to the new Recycle Program that is being offered by the City of Chicago Heights through Republic Services. Thank you for complying in this matter.

The Picture that Said a Thousand Words

One of the youngest members of our parish family gave Deacon Dutko a very touching drawing. The little girl, who didn’t write her name on the picture, handed this drawing to him as they were filing out after mass. When the Dutkos looked at the picture, they noticed that the little girl had captured all of the basic elements of a deacon at Mass, including Alb, incense censor, the crucifix, The Holy Book, a heart representing love, and a butterfly representing the Holy Spirit. This delightful little girl not only captured all the basic elements of Mass but its mysteries and blessings. The Dutkos have framed the drawing and hung the drawing on their wall but wanted to share it with our church community. We would like to express our thanks to the Dutkos for sharing this amazing picture and the hope of a renewed faith through our young community.
