T oday the Church celebrates Pentecost. Before the Lord ascended he promised that he would send an advocate who would be with us. We believe that the Holy Spirit is that promised advocate and that the Spirit is with us always. It is the spirit of both the father and the son that live in each of us. We are given the gifts of the Holy Spirit and are reminded by St. Paul that there are many gifts, but one body. We are the Body of Christ. One of my favorite songs reminds us that when we do our best and live as if Christ is in us, we are the Body of Christ, and we are beautiful. Let’s welcome the Holy Spirit with joy!
This afternoon we will have our Pentecost concert. This concert will be an uplifting end to the Easter season and will feature the choirs from both St. Agnes and St. Kieran. During the week I was able to sit in on a rehearsal and couldn’t have been prouder of the group. I believe we have some of the best liturgical music at our celebrations each week, but together they really hit it out of the ballpark. Please join us this afternoon at St. Agnes at 2:00 PM for the Pentecost concert.
Last weekend we celebrated the 40th anniversary of Fr. Tom’s ordination to the priesthood. Fr. Tom is pretty humble, but forty years is a big deal. Day in and day out Fr. Tom has tried to bring Jesus’ message into our lives and the world. We are blessed to have him with us and so we celebrate with him. Fr. Ron from
St. James Hospital is also a classmate. Last weekend St. James Hospital is also a classmate. Last weekend the four priests went out to dinner and had a great time sharing stories of the seminary and early priesthood. Thanks Fr. Tom for a job well done! Thanks also to the St. Kieran Women’s Club for hosting his reception!
Pentecost is often seen as a celebration commem-orating the beginning of the Church. Today please take a moment and read Archbishop Cupich’s letter on the “Renew My Church” initiative. His vision is for a strong local church and sees working together as the basis for that strength. Today’s concert is an example of St. Agnes and St. Kieran coming together. I always say that when we stand together we will be strong and so I encourage you to be open to the path ahead which the Archbishop sees as a new Pentecost.
This past week St. Agnes school held a Fine Arts night highlighting the band, the children’s choir, as well as the children’s art and writing. It was a great success and once again highlights the positives that happen in the school each and every day. Registration for next year is moving ahead and a number of the classes are filling up. Please call Karen in the school for more information or a tour.
Finally, the To Teach Who Christ Is campaign is continuing a record of success. We now have $280,000 in pledges and are at 52% of our parish goal. We hope to reach 70% in the next few weeks and would appreciate your help. Please consider turning in your pledges now so that we can get to 70%. Thank You!
We Belong to Christ in the Church: A Practical Ecclesiology for Renew My Church
Father Louis J. Cameli
Part 7: The pilgrim people of God on their journey to God
The Church is a pilgrim people. This means that we are on the road, that we have a destination, and that we have not yet arrived. Along the way we encounter or meet each other as fellow believers, and we accompany each other with encouragement. At times, we may feel unsteady on this pilgrimage. Every journey has its challenges, and so it is for the Church. Together, we keep learning and growing in faith and challenging each other. We do not have a perfect grasp of the truth or the ways to live it out. Deeper understanding comes with time, humble perseverance, and—sometimes—with real struggle. Together, we also keep growing in holiness. While on this journey, the Church embraces both saints and sinners. We regularly and painfully recognize our sins and failures both in what we have done and what we have failed to do. Those who belong to the Church always stand in need of purification and a fuller conversion of heart, a more complete turning to the Lord. The pilgrim Church never ceases to call on God’s mercy and forgiveness. On its pilgrimage through time and space, the Church has the assurance of the Lord Jesus, “Behold, I am with you always until the end of the age.” That promise of his presence raises our hope even in difficult circumstances. On this journey, there is also the consoling presence of the pre-eminent person in the Church, the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Second Vatican Council says of her…
In the bodily and spiritual glory which she possess in heaven, the Mother of Jesus continues in this present world as the image and first flowering of the Church as she is to be perfected in the world to come. Likewise, Mary shines forth on earth, until the day of the Lord shall come as a sign of sure hope and solace for the pilgrim people of God. (Lumen gentium, 68)
Question: How have you felt the struggle and the hope of being on a pilgrimage to God in the company of other believers? What is especially important in sustaining you as you make this personal and shared journey? How can you best support other believers along the way?

WE WANT YOU…
As we close out the 2015-2016 Religious Education year, we are already beginning to plan for next year. Catechists and adult classroom aides are needed for the 2016-2017 academic year. If you are looking for an opportunity to help your church, there is no better way to do so than passing on our rich faith to our children.
Don’t think you’re qualified? Teachers, both active and retired, make wonderful catechists, but so do parents, coaches, grandpar-ents, and caregivers.
Requirements? You must be an active, practicing Catholic who loves God, loves their faith, and loves children.
Still not sure you are qualified? Let us help you decide... call the Religious Education office at 708/754-0484. We will be happy to answer your questions and help you discern whether or not this is the ministry for you.

Parish News & Events
St. Agnes has hosted a Shawl Ministry group for a number of years. They are a small group of knitters and crocheters who make baby afghans for families who are baptizing, shawls for the sick or homebound and neck scarves for PADS guests. A lot of the work may be done at home, but they meet once a month for about an hour at St. Agnes, usually on the last Thursday of the month at 10 AM for a cup of coffee, company and to pray while they work. If you’re interested in joining the group, please call Ann at 756-2635 or Kay in the parish office at St. Agnes at 709-2694. P.S. Plenty of supplies are available, so please think about coming to learn how to knit or just for the fellowship!
