Earliest Known Root Canal Treatment Recently Discovered

On a recent dig in Israel's Negev Desert, Dr. Joseph Zias, A physical an- thropologist at the national Depart- ment of Antiquities and Museums, unearthed what is perhaps the oldest known example of a root canal treat- ment. The work was discovered in the remains of a soldier--probably a Na- batean--dating from the second or third century B.C.

Upon examining the soldier's skull, Dr. Zias noticed that part of an incisor had turned light green. An x-ray of the jaw showed a bronze wire one-tenth of an inch long in the tooth's canal. Pat- ricia Smith, a dental anthropologist at Hebrew University, speculated that the wire was an attempt to deal with one of the soldier's dental problems, which apparently included three abscesses and a cyst.

As early as the third millennium B.C. both Phoenicians and Egyptians wired Ioose teeth together. Apparently, they must also have usedwire to treat an in- fected root. Early texts such as the Babylonian Legend of the Tooth Worm, attributed tooth decay to the gnawing of the 'demon maggot'. Dr. Zias believes the wire may have been used to kill the maggot and to keep others from entering the tooth.
