As we approach the celebration of the Lord’s birth, it becomes increas- ingly difficult to remain in the spirit of Advent. The culture around us has been celebrating the Christmas season for several weeks at this point, and I know that I’m having a hard time not binging on my favorite Christmas hymns (I hope I’m not the only one tempted to listen to “O Come all ye Faithful” on repeat…). Thankfully, in her great wisdom, the Church provides us with a great musical tool to remain focused on whatever liturgical season we are in: the four seasonal Marian Antiphons. Originating from the Divine Office (specifically the office of compline), these antiphons have been part of the Church’s liturgical tradition for hundreds of years, dating back to the Medieval period in Europe. The Antiphons are: Alma Redemptoris Mater “O Loving Mother of the Redeemer” (for Advent through the feast of the Presentation on Feb. 2), Ave Regina Caelorum “Hail, O Queen of Heaven” (for Feb 3 through the Easter Vigil), Regina Coeli “Queen of Heaven” (for the Easter season through Pentecost) and Salve Regina “Hail, Holy Queen” (for after Pentecost until the beginning of Advent). As we are still in the season of Advent, I’ll focus my attention on Alma Redemptoris Mater, which was written by a monk named Herimann in the 11th century. The translation of this antiphon (here taken from Fr. Fortiscue) is quite beautiful: “Holy mother of our Redeemer, thou gate leading to heaven and star of the sea; help the falling people who seek to rise, thou who, all nature wonder- ing, didst give birth to thy holy Creator. Virgin always, hearing the greeting from Gabriel’s lips, take pity on sinners.” Like all the antiphons, Alma Redemptoris is ordinarily sung at the end of Compline, or Night Prayer. During this Advent season, we are continuing this tradition of Night prayer at 8pm Sunday nights through this Sunday, Dec. 17th. The music for this antiphon is joyful and melodic, and it captures wonderfully the image of Mary as our guiding star to Jesus. I strongly encourage everyone, especially if you are not familiar with this chant, to familiarize yourself with the music for this antiphon. Learn to sing it (it’s not hard!) and allow the beauty of the Latin text, combined with the translation, to lead you into prayer. The Church provides us with these antiphons for our benefit; let’s take advantage of this great musical and prayerful gift that has been given to us! Alma Redemptoris Mater: The Church’s Marian Antiphon for Advent

DECEMBER 17, 2017 3RD SUNDAY OF ADVENT

You are a Witness to Hope!

Dear Parishioners! We are at

around 30% of our goal, over

$100K and pledges continue to

come in! I am so grateful for

your generosity and continued

support of the Bishop’s

campaign and of our parish!

Now, let’s get every member of

this parish to participate! Let’s

not miss out on this God given

opportunity to commit to the

sacred mission of the Church and

give of ourselves!

-Fr Tom

Pope Francis has called us to be

bold, to be missionaries and to

be witnesses to Christ and His

saving message: “This is our call

to give of ourselves, to offer our

lives as a willing sacrifice in

order to receive the very life of

Christ, and to fulfill His mission

by His Grace and strength to

work in us.”

Our financial generosity is

one expression of how we can

witness to the hope of His

message and build His kingdom

here on earth. It is not something

that we should do grudgingly or

as a token response. Witness to

Hope is an invitation to be an

active missionary and evangelist

for Christ Jesus.

At Christmas, flowers are abundant in the Church as a sign of the miracle of Christmas, as well as our offer-ings to the Christ Child. Their beauty is a comfort. There are special envelopes in your donation-packet to donate for flowers. If you put the donation in the name of someone living or deceased there is a special Mass by which their souls may receive the graces from that infinite sacrifice. If you do not have a donation packet with the special envelope, just place at least $10 in an envelope and mention the name of the person you want remembered, and we’ll mention them in the bulletin. The special Mass for the intentions of all these folks will be on January 14, 10:30am. Please consider providing for these flowers at this special time in the name of a loved one and attending the Mass too!

Help us Decorate the Church for Christmas!
