Mercy This Week
Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ,
King of the Universe
Jubilee Year Ends
Today Luke, evangelist and by tradition artist, sends
us forth from this Jubilee Year of Mercy with an un-
forgettable portrait of Christ the King. The setting for
Jesus’ “royal portrait” is the cross. From this “throne,”
the crucified “crown prince” welcomes by “executive
pardon” the kingdom of mercy’s first citizen, a fellow
criminal. The “Good Thief” requests neither
deliverance nor salvation, or even forgiveness:
“Remember me when . . .” (Luke 23:42). “Today you
will be with me,” King Jesus promises, “in
paradise.” (23:43). Paradise, even for non-believers, is
an image of creation contentedly in harmony with self,
fellow creatures, and Creator. Today, we “good
thieves” beg Jesus to remember us. We promise to
remember that, although Jesus’ kingdom will be
fulfilled only when Jesus’ returns, that kingdom
begins today in the paradise that will flower from this
Jubilee Year of Mercy. We disciples, having been
embraced unconditionally and undeservedly by Jesus’
mercy, must now go forth to embrace all others,
unconditionally, with that same unfailing mercy.

Reflection question: Every person has authority, for example, authority to
speak for oneself, authority to manage employees,
authority to rear children. How compassionate are
you in exercising your authority?

RCIA News
This Sunday at the 10 a.m. Eucharistic Liturgy we
formally welcome eight children into the RCIA
process (adapted for children) as they prepare for the
Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist.
Please pray for Abel Ray Davila, Isiah Carlos
Davila, Ruben Davila, III, Javon James Ibarra, Lily
Ann Larison, Nynave Jean Larison, Paxton Rein
Lerma and Hayley Michelle McKinney.
Mercy Minute Here are a few practical ways to live our November Works of Mercy: “Pray for the
Living and the Dead” and “Bury the Dead.”
Light a candle this evening as part of your
night-time prayers. Let each member of the family pray for someone who is ill or in need.
Take a bouquet of flowers to a cemetery.
Place it on a grave that has no decoration and say a prayer to our merciful God for the person who is buried there.
Consider making a donation as a memorial
of someone who has died. Keep the person’s memory alive and contribute to a good cause.
St. James Coffee House Thanks so much to everyone who came to our
November Coffee House. We have ordered
additional Advent wreaths and they will arrive
before Thanksgiving. We will give you a call
when they are delivered.
Look forward to our next Coffee House, which will
take place in January.
