Sunday 31 December
Dull. Fog from sea. Maud in drawing all morg. Lin & Roy walked. Connie
B. to tea. Maud to tea Mrs. Hood’s. Too tired to go to Mrs. Burnand’s.
My first visit. (Roy’s handwriting on back pages of diary)
It was my first visit & we were to stay from 27th until the 30th Dec with
some friends who owned a charming old Queen Anne house in Kent
surrounded by a well wooded park. After a 1 hours journey we
approached the little station of (blank) at six o’clock PM where luggage
cart & brougham were awaiting our arrival. It was a very cold evening
and freezing hard. After a slight delay, owing to the luggage, off we
drove and after half an hours drive we arrived at the destination. I was
15 years old at the time and was at Eton where I had been 3 years. It is
necessary to say that the son of Mr Pym was also an Eton boy. My father
& mother were with me leaving my sister Maud at our house in
Ramsgate. There were several other visitors in the house one of which
was a Mr Luxmore an Eton master. He was an elderly gentleman, very
handsome, of medium height, grey hair and had very gentlemanly
manners. Our host was a tall genial man, stout, with a touch of Napoleon
about him, evidently an admirer of art as the house was filled with works
of art & the library was filled with valuable books of which he was not a
little proud. The hostess was a little short woman with a kindly
expression in her large prominent blue eyes, about 35 years of age. She
was Mr P’s second wife. My Eton companion was about my age tho’
somewhat shorter. There were two pretty little fair girls besides, about 9
& 10 respectively, who were kept in strict order by a French governess.
There was a large double hall where large family portraits hung &
portières of old tapestry. The grand staircase leading to the principle
bedrooms which were on either side of a long gallery, lighted by a
stained glass window whose prismatic rays cast weird & fantastic light
on the many old pictures.
