130,000 new cases of leprosy (Hansen’s Disease) are diag-nosed in India every year. Narsappa was 10 when he was told he had leprosy. People shunned him and he had to leave the village. He says his mother started griev-ing for him "as if I was al-ready dead". His father took him to a leprosy hospital and he never went home again. Now 42, he lives in a leprosy colony near Hyderabad. "I lie awake at night thinking about how I was treated and how I can stop others from going through the same thing," he says.
In India alone, there are a 1,000 leprosy colonies of people affected by leprosy. Even those who are no longer contagious live as outcasts. This present day reality helps us understand the leper’s hope in Jesus in the gospel this Sunday, The ’leper’ who was healed is as real as Narsappa who has lived in a leprosy colony for 32 years since he was 10. He is as real as any one of us, wanting with all our hearts to be made well from some personal weakness. “Jesus was moved with pity.” “Pity”, in Mark’s original text is a “gut wrenching” sadness for another’s suffering and wanting to do something about it.
“ If you want to you can make me clean”. “Of course I want to”. We are not just hearing a historical conversation between Jesus and the man he made clean. It is God’s reassuring and healing Word to us.
Pope Francis Wednesday Teachings on the Mass.
Last Wednesday, the Pope explained that at Mass, the pages of the Bible cease to be written text, but become “the living Word of God.” “God speaks to us. We must listen to Him and put into practice what he says”. If we listen with our hearts, in faith, we hear God speak-ing directly to us, not just an inspiring account of another person in another time. At Mass we gather to hear what God has done and wants to do for us. The Lord arranges the Table of the Word to nourish our spiritual life. If we allow
ourselves to be worked and cultivated, like the good soil in the parable of the Sower, what we hear at Mass passes into our daily life.

Ash Wednesday 14 February Masses 9.30am & 7.30pm. The blessing with ashes on the fore-head marks the beginning of Lent. The palm branches from last Palm Sunday were burned to produce the ashes. The cross in ashes on our foreheads is an outward sign that we are sorry and want to return to the Lord’s loving way in our daily life.
