National Night Out was held at a new location this year. The beautiful backdrop of North-ridge Park provided a wonderful evening of connections between community members. Community education would like to thank the Carlton County Sheriff’s office, Esko Fire Department, Partners and Education, Boy Scouts, B & B Market, Sub Zero Robotics, Esko Cheerleaders, and the kindergar-ten teachers who attend every year to welcome kindergarten families. This event is possible because of the work of many people, and we could not do it without every one of them.

National Night Out

Community Education is proud to offer community events for the entire family like Nation-al Night Out. We also sponsored Movie in the Park as a part of Esko Fun days, and are helping Destina-tion Imagination along with mul-tiple school groups with the plan-ning of Fall Fest being held at the end of October. In addition, we are offering a new Christmas time activity for children called Santa’s Workshop. Look for details on our website and in the November issue of the Corner. Kids will have an op-portunity to create gifts for the fam-ily and participate in fun games along with outdoor activities. If you are interested in growing these ac-tivities and are willing to volunteer time or resources to community education, please contact Michele Carlson at 879-4038 or [email protected]

First lego league Robotics Grades 5-72016 marked Esko’s first year competing in

First Lego League (FLL) Robotics Competition. Our 2 teams performed well and finished in the top half of the competition.

FIRST Lego League Robotics (FLL) is a chal-lenge-based program that enhances participants’ communication and problem solving skills, while having fun and building technical abili-ties. Participants join a team of 5-7 students that meet after school twice weekly to prepare for Lego Robotics Competitions.

Teams will compete in the local FLL Robot-ics Competition, held at Hermantown Middle School on Saturday, December 9th. Technology/robotics/programming skills are not necessary to join a team, as participants will receive training and learn as they go.

90% of last year’s participants are returning, and reported learning a lot while having “lots of fun.”

Please contact Melissa Rauner at [email protected] if you have any questions or would like additional information about Esko FLL.

* Please add your child to the wait list if the registration is full, as we will accommodate ad-ditional participants if we can create additional team(s). Registration can be done by calling the community education office at 879-4038.

* The option exists to create an additional team if additional coaches are found. Contact Melissa Rauner at [email protected] if you are interested in coaching or know of a coach. (Coaches do NOT need programming or robotic experience.)

** Please note, this is different from Lego Robotics Camps taught by Angie Orvedahl and SubZero Robotics. **

Welcome

Help us welcome Melissa Martineau!Melissa is our new 4 year old

school readiness teacher. She was hired in August, and is thrilled to be teaching in her home district where her children attend school.

She has enjoyed meeting all of the staff and is thankful for their

positivity especially when handling construction issues when preparing the room for the start of class. She is eager to meet her students and parents.

Melissa is a graduate of Esko school and bleeds blue and gold ac-cording to Mr. Davidson. She has lived in Esko with her husband, Aaron and children Nikolas and Av-ery for the last ten years. She moved back to Esko after graduating here because it has a great school and wonderful community.

Melissa received her BA in Early Childhood Education with Special Education from UMD. She also has a collateral field in music.

In her spare time, she enjoys be-ing with family and friends filling her time with camping, being active with her kids, and volunteering at her church. She also loves to scrap-book, but time rarely allows her to do that!

Her favorite color is green and

loves all kinds of food but especial-ly Peking chicken, seafood enchila-das, or fish tacos.

One thing very few people know about Melissa is that she is actually shy. She believes being outgoing is a choice she makes every day be-cause people are far too wonderful to not get to know and enjoy them.

liz Gonser is new to Cool Kids!Liz started with us he first week

of school and has been working two days a week with us. She loves working with the kids and watch-ing them grow and learn new things each day.

Liz graduated from Superior High School and has gone on for addi-tional schooling to pursue a career in the medical field.

Liz has an older brother and cur-rently lives in Superior with her boyfriend who is an Esko graduate.

She loves to spend time with friends with her free time, which is

limited while attending school and working for Cool Kids!!

Liz’s favorite color is pink. She loves to eat tacos and not many peo-ple know that she has a blackbelt in karate!

We are thrilled to have Liz work-ing with us!

Esko Historical Society

Presentationsisu, a Finnish word meaning perseverance and dogged determination

regardless of the odds or circumstances, will be the theme of a presenta-tion Monday, Oct. 16, at the Esko town Hall.

Rodney Ikola, a 1957 Esko graduate who has been active for many years in Finnish and Finnish-American organizations, will make the 15-minute presentation prior to the Esko Historical Society’s monthly meeting.

Sisu is often said to embody the Finnish spirit, typified by the nation’s stubborn resistance to a takeover by the Soviet Union during World War II.

Ikola, now a resident of Hibbing, spent his career as a geophysicist for major mining companies in the U.S. and internationally. He earned de-grees in geology, mathematics and geophysics from the universities of Utah and Minnesota.

The Oct. 16 presentation begins at 1 p.m. and is open to the public.

Discussion about if we will have another 2018 run, or a possibility to hand it off to the teachers for a fundraising event. Further discussion will take place at our October meeting.

Mandy Dewey brought up an idea for the Christmas Program to get pictures from families that have a family member evolved in the mili-tary, to show prior to the show start-

ing This would not be to encourage early seating, but a way for the pie group to thank the families for their service and a little extra thoughtful-ness before the show. Mandy Dew-ey was going to get more informa-tion from the music teachers Mrs. Staples and Mrs. Lofald and bring back to our October meeting to get voted on.

Back to schoolWe are off and running on another school year.

Our success relies on the relationships we have with our families. We encourage you to get in-volved and take an active role in your child’s

education. By supporting one another, it makes the home/school connection that much stronger and provides the support your child needs to be successful in school. Thank you for all that you do as parents and families. We look forward to growing with you this year to ensure your child has a great school year.

Partners in Education (PiE)If you are looking to get involved in a worth-

while organization that does wonderful things for the students in our building, then PIE is the group for you. Becoming a member is easy! If you are a parent of a child in Winterquist Ele-mentary School, then you are already a member of this group. Meetings are held on the second Monday of each month at 6:30 pm in the library. This is a great opportunity to get together with this progressive group to talk, discuss, and sup-port the school experience at Winterquist Ele-mentary. PIE continues to raise money each year to support and provide educational opportunities

for our young learners. We hope to see you at the meetings.Other items

• Students are not allowed in the building be-fore 7:45 a.m. or after 3:30 p.m. unless they are under direct supervision by a teacher or coach.

• The phone number to reach Winterquist Elementary is 218-879-3361.

If they do not call the office we will contact them as a safety pre-caution. If we can’t get an excuse for the ab-sence it will turn into an unexcused absence.

• With fall fast approaching, the mornings are quite cool. Make sure to send along a jacket or sweatshirt with your child. They are out-side on the playground to start the day.

BY GREG HExUM, EHS Principal

Conference Night information On October 12, conferences will

take place by invite only. This eve-ning is not for general student con-ferences. Rather, on this evening, teachers will hold scheduled con-ferences for those students who are demonstrating significant academic needs. Parents will be contacted directly by Esko High School staff if or when a scheduled conference is deemed necessary. Teachers and parents will work together on this evening to support struggling stu-dents in a positive and proactive manner.

Traditional conferences for all parents will take place at the end of the first marking period on Thurs-day, November 16 from 3:30 to 7:00 in teacher classrooms. In this conference format, parents pick up their student’s report card in the high school commons and spend approximately 5 minutes with each teacher to get progress reports.

EHS will host one Spring confer-ence night on April 12, 2018. Put these dates on your calendars.

Mid-tERM REPORts ANdREPORt CARds

Information indicating student progress is available to parents on the Infinite Campus Parent Portal and the Canvas Learning Manage-ment System. To set-up access, contact the high school office at

879-4673. Paper copies of Mid-Term Reports and report cards will not be mailed to student’s home un-less there is a written request on file in the office. Paper copies of report cards are provided to parents at par-ent-teacher conferences.

Look to the Infinite Campus Par-ent Portal for digital copies of re-port cards, but view your child’s Canvas account for the most up-to-date daily progress. Attendance Reminders

Punctuality and regular school attendance are essential to success in school. The State of Minnesota requires compulsory attendance for all children between 7 and 16 years of age. Students who acquire more than 15 absences in a semester, for any non-school related reason, may receive a grade of Incomplete. Each absence beyond 15 requires a physician’s note to be considered excused. Consistent school at-tendance is one means by which a student develops responsibility and self-discipline. For these reasons, student absence should be limited to those instances in which absence is genuinely unavoidable. Each stu-dent, his or her parent/guardian and the school share an obligation to en-courage and insure good student at-tendance. Any time a student miss-es more than 10 minutes of a class period, he/she will be considered to have been absent for the entire period. For report cards and state reporting purposes, attendance will be reported as half or full days with 12:00 p.m. as the dividing point.

Excused Absences – The burden of a child being excused from school

is placed on the parent/guardian of the child. A school has the right to accept or deny an application for an excused absence. There-fore, schools can develop reason-able policies for school attendance and reject invalid excuses offered by the child or parent.

EXCUSED ABSENCES - SCHOOL RELATED — Those where a student is under school staff control or supervision such

as for a field trip, music contest or sports event. Students will not be marked absent on their report card for these days if they are excused by the school for these events, but they are expected to keep up with their school work and may not be given extra time to complete it.

EXCUSED ABSENCES - NOT SCHOOL RELATED — Must be verified within 24 hours by a par-ent or guardian for illness, medi-cal appointments, religious instruc-tion or observance which can only be held during the school day and for limited emergency situations. Needed at home is NOT usually an excused absence. Prearranged temporary absence is excused when the application form has been com-pleted and approved prior to the ab-sence.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES —All other absences. Major tests and assignments may be made up but no credit will be possible for daily par-ticipation grades and most quizzes.

CLASS TRUANCY/SKIPPING — Truancy is an absence from school without parental permission or not following an assigned school schedule. Leaving a class early and excessive time on a pass will also be considered truancy. Offenses: Zero grades for all assignments and/or tests that day. Teacher may require make up of work missed and/or compensatory assignments, all for no credit. Students are re-sponsible for completing assign-ments on time and for taking quiz-zes or tests with the rest of the class.

It’s a staggering statistic, and we are fortunate to have a devoted volunteer department right here in Esko. Were you aware that having a volunteer fire department helps keep your property taxes and in-surance rates lower than if we did not? Luckily for us, the Esko Fire Department was established back in 1949 and has remained volun-teer since its inception. Since then, things have changed a lot, but one thing has always been static: Our need for volunteers.

Whether you are new to the com-munity, or a long-time resident, vol-unteering with our Fire Department is a great way to have a significant positive impact on Esko.

Why should I volunteer?● Learn new skills● Meet new people● Be part of a team● Preserve lives and property● Annual stipend● Pension● Free training

Maybe you’ve thought about join-ing for a while but never filled out an application. Maybe you didn’t believe you were qualified, or per-haps you’ve just never thought about it. Now is the perfect time to join and start making a difference in the lives of others!

Applications can be picked up at the town hall or on October 7th from 7-11 AM at our annual Me-morial Pancake Feed.

Candidates must be 18 years of age, possess a valid driver’s license, and live within the boundaries of Thomson Township. While medi-cal and/or fire training is a plus it is not required.
