Stormy Weather Lately, we’ve all seen the devastation of hurricanes in Houston and southeastern Texas, and now Florida. There has also been an earthquake in Mexico. Our hearts go out to those who have lost their homes, their family members and more. We send aid and assistance as best we can, but we can still feel helpless in times like these. It seems to me very normal if someone asks where God is in all of this. Why do such things as hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes, tsunamis and other natural disasters happen? Why do the innocent have to die? These are very difficult questions, and there are no quick and easy answers that will make everything seem all right. Literally nobody has the answer. Your priest does not have the answer, but neither does your lawyer, your banker, your doctor, your bartender, the cashier at HEB -- nobody. Yet some people still want to say something that will make the situation understandable. It’s very likely that you’ve heard celebrities or others with access to mass media sharing their opinions. One Hollywood personality has gone on public record saying that Texas was hit by Hurricane Harvey as punishment because Texans voted for and continue to support President Trump. One of the most basic points taught in both high school and college English classes is to avoid making generalizations. Apparently, this celebrity overlooked the fact that Hurricane Harvey hit those Texans who voted for Hilary Clinton as well, which renders her assertion null and void. On the other hand, there are some celebrities and others within the Christian community who have made statements about the reasons for Hurricane Harvey, and now Irma striking the U.S. One example is a man who said that God sends hurricanes and other natural disasters as punishment for sin and apostasy. That explanation fails to account for newborn babies and very young children who have not yet had the opportunity to sin, but yet are killed in the wake of these storms. The man who made the comment didn’t say that God sends hurricanes to punish for original sin, but for sins actually committed. In that case, I believe his assertion calls God’s justice into question in the minds of many, which is at least a very poor witness, and therefore also unhelpful. Others will tell you that the Fall of Adam introduced corruption to the entire created order and subsequently subjected all of humanity to a severe, harsh and often violent natural world. In that case, we shouldn’t wonder why there are hurricanes. While it may be true, this explanation is far from helpful, it seems to me, in a case like this. At the root of all this is the constant problem and question of pain and suffering in this life. No one who ever walked this earth is exempt. The great mystery is that God does not take suffering away, nor does He explain it. An even greater mystery is that God Himself stepped directly into the midst of pain and suffering in becoming Incarnate and then dying to redeem humanity. God shares our pain and suffering and He is always present to us in our best times and in our worst. If we are faithful to God, we will still have to endure pain and suffering in this life. But with God in our lives, we also have hope. God has promised us that the pain and suffering we experience in the here and now is not permanent, and that He will raise us up on the last day to bring us into His eternal kingdom where there will be no pain and suffering. Those who do not have God in their lives can look forward to pain and suffering like the rest of us, and then to whatever comforts this world has to offer, and nothing more. Let’s all pray for those suffering because of the hurricanes and earthquakes, along with those who are helping them, and lift them up to God and trust in His mercy. Amen.

Clima Tempestuoso

Prayer is a gift from God. It is a wonderful way to lift someone in prayer who is sick, someone in need or for anyone with special intentions. The Parish prayer list is for such purposes, however, it can become quite big and the print becomes smaller. So that all may be included and properly fit within page boundaries, the prayer list will be renewed with a fresh start every first of the month. If you wish to place your name on the list once it is renewed, please call the parish office. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

On September 8th, 29 couples attended another informative and inspirational Date Night. After a meal and brief table discussions, we heard a first hand account of the many sites in the Holy Land - and the role of Catholics in preserving them. The presentation was led by Deacon Tom and Mary Jane Fox from the Pilgrim Center of Hope. The evening ended with an increased appreciation for the foundations of our Catholic faith. We invite you to our next Date Night on October 6th - "MatriMoney."

If you feel called to prepare the Lord's table, the sacristan ministry is in needed of a sacristan to prepare the Sunday 5:00 pm mass. Please call Melanie Krause at (830)777-4718.

from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. The Journey to Peace: Reflections on Faith, Embracing Suffering, and Finding New Life is our featured book for this week. Written by Joseph Cardinal Bernardin, (1928-1996) in the final months of his life, it is considered a modern classic about finding inner peace in the face of life’s greatest trials. Using the Stations of the Cross as a framework, Cardinal Bernardin helps readers understand the relevance of Jesus’ suffering, death, and resurrection to their own lives. From the editor’s introduction: We are also called to be Christ’s disciples in the modern world. When we make the Way of the Cross, we are not being morbid, nostalgic or lost in the past. Quite the contrary! We are studying the very foundation of our faith, upon which we are called to build the kingdom of God on earth. Unless we embrace the Cross, we cannot embrace the resurrection. It is that simple. And that profound! Our prayers and hope is that as you read this book in portions throughout the year, you will accept Cardinal Bernardin’s invitation to enter more deeply into the mystery of Jesus’ Passion and resurrection and find yourself further along the road on your .journey to peace. This would be a good time to remind you there is no time limit to the books you check out of our library. Keep them as long as you need, and if you want to share your thoughts on any book you have checked out, we love hearing from you!

Greetings to All,

We in San Antonio are so blessed to have been spared the wrath of Hurricane Harvey. I know you feel as I do that we are now called upon to help our neighbors in East Texas recover from the devastation. At Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of San Antonio we have been collecting monetary donations and in-kind donations. We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of San Antonio. Last Friday we delivered 5 trucks of supplies to Corpus Christi. We are planning on take the same amount to Victoria on Monday, September 11. Our largest shipment will be to Houston on September 23rd. I really need your help in order to make this happen. We are not asking for monetary donations but instead in-kind donations, volunteer time, vehicles and drivers. For in-kind items, we are in need of cleaning supplies, water, bug spray and personal hygiene products. For volunteers, we are in need of volunteers will to assist with receiving, sorting & inventorying incoming donations at 2127 S. Zarzamora formerly St. Stephens Church. We will be having a large group of volunteers help us load the trucks on September 23. If you have any employees willing to help, we can use them! They can sign up on our website at ccaosa.givepulse.com. Thank you for your consideration of our request. Please check out some of the relief work we have been doing on our Facebook page at facebook.com/CatholicCharitiesSA. Please let me know if you would like to get involved; (210)222-1294.

Sincerely, J. Antonio Fernandez Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of San Antonio President/CEO

Saludos a Todos
