Don’t You Know Me? – Part 1

Kids like knock-knock jokes. One of the favorites is the one about the banana. A kid will say “knock, knock” and you say, “who’s there?” And the kid says, “banana” and you say “banana who?” And then the whole thing starts over. After you go through that a few times, then the kid says “orange” when you say “who’s there?” And then the kid says, “orange you glad I didn’t say banana!” And for me, yes, actually, I am usually very glad that he didn’t say ‘banana’ for the umpteenth time.

My favorite knock, knock joke is a little different and it usually bewilders the kids when they hear it. Mine goes like this: “knock, knock” and the other person says “who’s there?” and I say “Abraham Lincoln” and the other person says “Abraham Lincoln who?” And then I say, “don’t you know me?” Now most adults get it, but kids get this confused look on their faces. That answer wrecks the whole knock, knock joke protocol. You’re not supposed to do that. You’re supposed to tell a knock, knock joke that meets expectations. Well mine doesn’t.

On a much more serious note – Revelation 3:20 Jesus says: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him and he with me.” You’d expect that anyone who hears the voice of Jesus knows Him and gladly opens the door to invite Him in. You wouldn’t want Jesus to say to you, “don’t you know Me?”

A few weeks ago we celebrated The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. In some circles another name for that Sunday is “heresy Sunday” because a sort of tradition has grown up in which clergy take the opportunity on that particular Sunday to address the historic misunderstandings of the nature of God. Quite a few of the church’s ailments can be traced to one heresy or another. And literally all heresies can be traced to some misunderstanding either about God or about Jesus Christ.

Heresies have been around since the Church began. And that is why, in the first seven or eight centuries of Christianity, the bishops of the Church gathered together to pray, and ask for the guidance of the Holy Spirit to discern the truth about God and Jesus Christ. These gatherings of bishops are known as the Seven Ecumenical Councils. The first council met at Nicea in 325 and settled the doctrine of the Trinity. The council that met in a place called Chalcedon in 451 set down for all time the true doctrine of Jesus Christ. The two things they settled on were that Jesus Christ is truly God and truly Man, and that He is indeed God Incarnate. The full nature of divinity and the full nature of humanity reside both together at once in the person of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. To be continued . . .

No Me Conoces?

Pope Francis calls the church to be permanently in mission. He calls for everyone to be a missionary. We can participate in the mission through prayer; an hour of adoration. This hour is a great and unrepeated opportunity for a young parent or grandparent to teach their tender lambs our faith and reverence to our most humble Majesty, The Good Shepherd Jesus. Please join us in just one hour of adoration a week out of nearly 124 weekly hours to choose from. An adorer is needed for:

Saturday 10:30 a.m.—11:30 a.m.

If you are able to help with this time, please call Veronica Fabro at (830)377-9117.

sabado 10:30 a.m.—11:30 a.m.

Please pray for those who have died, and have gone to their eternal rest with the Lord, especially for Wesley Lane & Enrique “Henry” Chacon. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.

The Women’s English ACTS are still accepting applications for the Women’s ACTS Retreat at Camp Tecaboca on October 24-27, 2019. Applications may be picked up at the Pastoral Center or you may also register online at www.notredamechurch.cc. This is a spiritually filled weekend with the Lord; all women are welcome; please do not let a financial burden prevent you from attending!

The Daughters of Notre Dame are currently accepting All Souls Memorial’s. A special Memorial Mass will be said on Sunday, November 10, 2019 at the 11:00 a.m. Mass; names will be published in the weekly bulletin. A City on a Mountain by Pascal P. Parent, S.T.D, Ph.D., J.C.B is an incredible

illustrated biography, about the “Living Crucifix” who is known as Padre Pio of Pietrelcina. He was born in 1887 in Pietrelcina near Naples, Italy in the small town San Giovanni Rotondo. He died in 1968. The author was a Professor at the Catholic University of America and he

details many of Padre Pio’s miracles (such as cures for cancer, bilocation, perfume odor, and conversions). This book was written while he was still alive. The photographs in this book are amazing and were taken by Signor Frederico Abresch of San Giovanni Rotondo (Foggia) Italy, who was a convert of Padre Pio and eventually moved to San Giovanni to be close to him. Padre Pio did not pose for them nor was he aware of them being taken. Like St. Francis of Assisi, Padre Pio bore on his body the five wounds of Jesus Christ, called the stigmata. For fifty years, the stigmata on Padre Pio’s body caused major discomfort, physical pain and also mental suffering. When Padre Pio arrived at the Monastery of Our Lady of Grace in December 1917, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Through a miracle of grace, his frail body began to return to life and energy. In the fall 1918, five crimson “roses” appeared on his hands and feet and one on his left side just under his heart. They called them roses because of their color and fragrance. Up until the time of his death, the wounds of the stigmata were still bleeding and still fragrant. When he died, they totally disappeared. In the beginning, the church was silent and waiting, and

then a declaration from the Holy Office warned the faithful to refrain from visiting or writing to him. From 1930 – 1932 he was not allowed to say mass in public or to hear confessions. To many people this meant total condemnation. It wasn’t until February 1948 that there were no prohibitions for Padre Pio. During this time, Padre Pio remained humble, obedient, and had perfect joy in his cell. It was known that the devil would visit Padre Pio in his cell and accost him by throwing him against the wall, hurling him to the floor, and drag him around the room. Sometimes the devil would appear dressed as a Capuchin Franciscan priest trying to get him to give up his holy life. His spiritual director knew of all his torments and helped guide him with his struggles against the devil. . Padre Pio’s feast day is September 26. There is much more in this biography of Padre Pio that will keep you fascinated. He was the twentieth century’s “Apostle of Holiness.”
