NOTRE DAME CHURCH HOUSTON, TEXAS MAY 22, 2016 From the Deacon For years, street magicians and con artists have attracted people with the famous cup-and-coin trick. They put a coin under one of three cups, quickly move the cups around, then challenge people to guess which cup has the coin beneath it. As we celebrate the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity, we might compare it at first to this magician’s trick. If you put the Father, Son and Spirit under separate cups and then shuffle them, it won’t matter which cup you pick up, because all three are always present under each cup. In the end, we have to come to terms with the fact that there are no logical answers to the mystery of the Holy Trinity. We can only approach it in faith. Perhaps that is why Jesus said in today’s Gospel: “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you to all truth.” Jesus’ words offer us two very comforting and compelling ideas. First of all, Jesus is telling us that its ok that our understanding of the Trinity is inadequate, that we don’t have all the answers. Sometimes we won’t understand all that God is doing or asking of us as we live our lives. That is the result of just being human. We are limited in our knowledge. At the same time, Jesus is saying that we can still come to faith through the gift of the Spirit. The feast we celebrate today invites us not so much into total understanding of who God is but rather a loving appreciation of what He has done and continues to do for us. This is perhaps so beautifully expressed in today’s first reading as Lady Wisdom speaks of God’s great love for the human race at the time of creation: “then I was beside Him as his craftsman...I found delight in the human race.” Of all that God created, we have a special place in His love. Today’s feast is a time to give thanks to the God who loves us, to meditate on the many ways we have encountered that love and all the names for God that love has inspired. It doesn’t matter our age, young or old, brilliant or simple, we can all celebrate this day as the feast of the great love of God. NOTRE DAME CHURCH HOUSTON, TEXAS MAY 22, 2016

From the Deacon For years, street magicians and con artists have

attracted people with the famous cup-and-coin

trick. They put a coin under one of three cups,

quickly move the cups around, then challenge

people to guess which cup has the coin beneath it.

As we celebrate the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity,

we might compare it at first to this magician’s

trick. If you put the Father, Son and Spirit under

separate cups and then shuffle them, it won’t

matter which cup you pick up, because all three are

always present under each cup. In the end, we

have to come to terms with the fact that there are

no logical answers to the mystery of the Holy

Trinity. We can only approach it in faith. Perhaps

that is why Jesus said in today’s Gospel: “I have

much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now.

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you to

all truth.”

Jesus’ words offer us two very comforting and

compelling ideas. First of all, Jesus is telling us that

its ok that our understanding of the Trinity is

inadequate, that we don’t have all the answers.

Sometimes we won’t understand all that God is

doing or asking of us as we live our lives. That is

the result of just being human. We are limited in

our knowledge. At the same time, Jesus is saying

that we can still come to faith through the gift of

the Spirit. The feast we celebrate today invites us not so much

into total understanding of who God is but rather a

loving appreciation of what He has done and

continues to do for us. This is perhaps so

beautifully expressed in today’s first reading as

Lady Wisdom speaks of God’s great love for the

human race at the time of creation: “then I was

beside Him as his craftsman...I found delight in the

human race.” Of all that God created, we have a

special place in His love.

Today’s feast is a time to give thanks to the God

who loves us, to meditate on the many ways we

have encountered that love and all the names for

God that love has inspired. It doesn’t matter our

age, young or old, brilliant or simple, we can all

celebrate this day as the feast of the great love of

God.

MOST HOLY TRINITY SUNDAY ____________________________________________________________________________________________________

No

importa nuestra edad, jóvenes o ancianos, brillantes o
