SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE MERCY, POWER, AND LOVE OF GOD

The first reading today, from the book of Wisdom, makes its point over and over, at least five times in five verses! God is mighty, but lenient to all. God's power is shown in kindness and clemency, not in harshness and condemnation, and those who govern God's people must govern in the same way, with kindness. This loving kindness and gentleness is not contrary to God's might, but is a direct result of God's primacy over all. Who are we,

then, to judge what is in the hearts of our fellow Christians and all people, when God commands justice with love and clemency?

Likewise, the Holy Spirit makes up for our ignorance of what we need, speaking in a language we do not yet understand. But God knows our needs before we do, understands the intercessions of the Spirit, and helps us in our weakness. This is our hope: God's mercy, power, and love.

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

ENJOY GROCERY SHOPPING?

Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey’s House Calls for Groceries (HCG) program provides grocery shopping assistance on a weekly or biweekly basis to homebound residents in Morris County. Once matched, volunteers contact the HCG client to schedule a

mutually convenient time to grocery shop. Volunteers visit the client’s home to pick up the shopping list, and payment for the groceries. Then, the volunteer will shop at a local grocery store, deliver the groceries to the client’s home and assist with putting items away. This is a great opportunity for professionals, retirees and students who are looking for ways to create meaningful relationships with neighbors. For more information, please contact Rachel Enderle, Volunteer Coordinator, at 973-451-4128 or [email protected].

Please reserve September 18, 7pm at St. Mary’s Church, Denville. Sponsored by Assumption College for Sisters, Chris Lowney will speak on the topic of leadership, featuring his latest work, Everyone Leads: How to Revitalize the Catholic Church.

Chris Lowney chairs the board of Catholic Health Initiatives, one of the nation’s largest healthcare/hospital systems. He formerly served as a Managing Director of J.P. He is the author of five books, including the bestselling Heroic Leadership and Pope Francis: Why He Leads the Way He Leads, which was called "a book for the ages" and became the # 1 bestseller on Amazon's "Popes and the Vatican" list. His most recent work is, "Everyone Leads: How to Revitalize the Catholic Church." During his talk, Chris will explore some of the profound challenges now facing the Church and will invite each of us to step up and help lead the Church’s revitalization.

Chris is a one-time Jesuit seminarian, and a summa cum laude graduate of Fordham University, where he also received his M.A. He is holder of five honorary Doctoral degrees. SACRED DOORWAYS WELCOMES JOHN SHEA

Sacred Doorways welcomes nationally acclaimed storyteller, author & theologian John Shea, along with teachers & authors Drs. Catherine & Michael Carotta for a retreat experience Finding New Eyes: Awakening to the Call of the Spirit, Saturday, October 21, 9am-4pm, at St. John Neumann

Pastoral Center, Piscataway, NJ. This retreat invites all to learn how to open our spiritual eyes & awaken with new breath: God's breath. Shea will offer thru story certain practices which invite us to cooperate with the Spirit & direct our spiritual development, no matter our age. The Carottas will invite us to consider that calls from God in life expand far beyond work to encompass the direction of each individual life. They will offer concrete ways to sustain the Spirit & fulfill our commitment to become who God has created us to be. By learning to see with the eye of the Spirit, we can awaken to who we are & begin to live a new life more in tune with our true calling - regardless of age - individually & communally. For further info or to register, call 609-702-7858 or online at sacreddoorwaysnj.org.

FRIENDLY VISITORS NEEDED

Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey’s Friendly Visitor program provides volunteers with a rewarding volunteer opportunity and homebound neighbors with a break from the social isolation that often comes from living alone or being homebound. Volunteers are matched with homebound residents in Morris County who could benefit from a friendly visitor. Volunteers visit on a regular basis and participate in activities such as playing board games, arts and crafts projects and reading. For more information, please contact Rachel Enderle, Volunteer Coordinator, at 973-451-4128 or [email protected].

“THAT WOULD BE YOUR VOCATION…”

“Reflecting on Jesus’ mandate to proclaim the kingdom, I made a personal pledge to you. I said: ‘I promise to do everything I can not to become a mercenary priest who thinks of priesthood more as a career, a way to make a living. Rather, I will stay focused on my mission to be a prophetic priest, who has a pastor's heart, who tries to lead every parishioner to a real encounter with the living God, who loves his parishioners in truth. Just as I want to avoid becoming a mercenary priest, I'd like you to avoid having a consumer mentality with regard to church. Don't look at the church as a service provider, where you pay money to get service. Rather, just as I want to become a prophetic priest, I'd like you to want to become a disciple of Christ, one who resolves to further the Church's mission - i.e. to help others hear the call to repentance and welcome Christ into their lives. That would be your vocation.’”

An excerpt from Fr. Paul Goo's last homily at his Vancouver parish before heading to Rome for further study. Full text available at http://frpaulg.blogspot.ca/2017/07/upon-leaving-my-first-parish.html.
