FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION

What Is FGM?

• Any procedure that intentionally alter or cause injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.

• It is carried out on girls ranging from only a few days old up to mid teenage or just before marriage. There are also cases where older women are forced to go through FGM.

• Traditionally, it is performed by non-medically trained women, often in unsterile conditions and with no anaesthetic.

Types of FGM

• Type I – Clitoridectomy: - Partial or total removal of the clitoris• Type II – Excision: Partial or total removal of the clitoris and the labia minora, with or without

excision of the labia majora. • Type III – Infibulation: Narrowing of the vaginal opening through the creation of a covering seal.

This is formed by cutting and repositioning the inner and outer labia, with or without the removal of the clitoris.

• Type IV – Other: Pricking, piercing, incising, scraping and cauterizing the genital area

The Risks

• Shock• Death• Infection• Infertility• Severe pain• Haemorrhaging• Sexual dysfunction• Menstrual problems• Cysts and abscesses• Complications in pregnancy• Urine retention- leading to UTIs• Psychological damage including PTSD
