Today’s Gospel: Luke 21:5-19 When some were speaking
about the temple, how it was adorned with beauful stones
and gis dedicated to God, Jesus said, “As for these things
that you see, the days will come when not one stone will be
le upon another; all will be thrown down.” They asked him,
“Teacher, when will this be, and what will be the sign that
this is about to take place?” And Jesus said, “Beware that
you are not led astray; for many will come in my name and
say, ‘I am he!’ and, ‘The me is near!’ Do not go aer them.
“When you hear of wars and insurrecons, do not be
terrified; for these things must take place first, but the end
will not follow immediately.” Then Jesus said to them,
“Naon will rise against naon, and kingdom against
kingdom; there will be great earthquakes, and in various
places famines and plagues; and there will be dreadful
portents and great signs from heaven. “But before all this
occurs, they will arrest you and persecute you; they will
hand you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be
brought before kings and governors because of my
name. This will give you an opportunity to tesfy. So make
up your minds not to prepare your defense in advance; for I
will give you words and a wisdom that none of your
opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. You will
be betrayed even by parents and brothers, by relaves and
friends; and they will put some of you to death. You will be
hated by all because of my name. But not a hair of your
head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your souls.
“Do not be terrified.”
Even a superficial study of history will reveal that every
generaon has experienced their own version of
humankind’s brutality. Jesus knew what we would face
throughout history yet he admonished, “Do not be
terrified.” How can we remain calm and at peace in the
midst of such horrendous events? Peace comes from the
assurance that God is in control of history, working his will
even in the face of man’s inhumanity to man. He has our
eternal welfare within his control; we need not fear death or
eternity. In this passage Jesus warns, “some of you they will
put to death … but not a hair of your head will perish.” This
seemingly contradictory statement can comfort us and give
us peace only if we believe in the resurrecon, and Jesus’
power to preserve us for eternity even in death. If we see
this temporal life as all-important, we will be terrified of
losing it, if we see it as a stepping stone to eternity where
life becomes full and complete, we will not live in fear.
distru#a».
contro regno, e vi saranno in diversi luoghi terremo, carese e
mio nome.
difesa; io vi darò parola e sapienza, cosicché tu* i vostri
avversari non potranno resistere né controba#ere. Sarete
tradi perfino dai genitori, dai fratelli, dai paren e dagli amici,

A Message from Archbishop Miller “Dear Brothers and
Sisters in Christ: St Paul tells us that we are all members of
the Body of Christ, and that when one member suffers, all
suffer together. The worldwide crisis of clerical sexual abuse
affects every Catholic. Although the Archdiocese of
Vancouver has not seen the volume of tragic cases
experienced elsewhere, we have taken the problem very
seriously. I mandated a Clerical Sexual Abuse Case Review
CommiKee to examine the situaon here. We have been
studying the work of this CommiKee for more than three
months, developing a detailed and comprehensive response.
We will publish their 31 recommendaons and the
responses of the Archdiocese in a special issue of the BC
Catholic, available online this Friday. As well, a pastoral
leKer from me will be read at all Sunday Masses next
weekend. I am wring now to ask for your prayers as we
move forward with the protecon of children and vulnerable
adults and to encourage you to read carefully the Case
Review CommiKee’s report and our response as soon as
they become available. Sincerely yours in Christ, + J Michael
Miller, CSB Archbishop of Vancouver”
