When then Lansing Chamber President Martha Mertzled e orts to create the ATHENA Award in 1982, she hopedto establish an award that would recognize individualswho excelled in their pro essional accomplishments, community contributions and or opening paths that otherwomen could ollow.

Mission accomplished. Since its ounding in Lansing,ATHENAs success has literally spread around the world.ATHENA International has grown rapidly through the years, with more than 6,000 awards being presented in over 500communities in the United States, Canada, China, Russia, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.

For the past 28 years, ATHENA has highlighted the

enormous contributions o this regions most outstandingleaders. To a person, past recipients appreciate thesigni cance o the ATHENA Award.

The ATHENA Award has a rich history and remindsme o all the women who came be ore me - women whocouldnt vote, werent welcomed into the workplace andmany women who werent allowed to read, said Paula Cunningham, president o Capitol National Bank. I think o their perseverance and determination and applaudthem as I dream o the heights that all o our daughtersare now able to attain.

Receiving the ATHENA Award was truly one o the high points o my li e, said Paula Blanchard Stone, partner at McCarthy Blanchard. The ATHENA Awardmeans a great deal because o the values it symbolizes andthe exceptional women who are recipients.

Being awarded with the ATHENA Award was oneo those magical, once-in-a-li etime moments, saidWLNS-TV news anchor Sheri Jones. I was humbled andhonored to be recognized by my peers, but also appreciatethe women leaders who paved the way or me to excel in

my pro ession.Despite the recognition and prestige that the ATHENA Award has developed in the Lansing region, there wereseveral people who elt that more could be done toencourage, support and provide greater opportunities orwomen in business. Paula Blanchard Stone was among

ATHENA Award winner to beannounced November 10.

those who attended an ATHENA International Con erenceand saw what other communities were doing to strengthentheir programs.

A local steering committee was ormed and identi eda couple o strategies to boost ATHENA. First, the grouphelped establish ATHENA WIN, a Womens Interest Network

connecting women with other infuential women in Mid-Michigan.The second strategy was to give the ATHENA Award

itsel a higher pro le in the community. The award hastraditionally been presented at the Lansing RegionalChambers Annual Dinner. Chamber leaders and the

ATHENA steering committee decided to establish an annualstand-alone ATHENA Award presentation to recognize eachrecipient. The rst event is scheduled or December 1 at the Lansing Center.

Having a separate event o this magnitude givesthe ATHENA Award more visibility and signi cance, saidBlanchard Stone.

Not only should the new venue or ATHENA givehigher recognition to the annual award recipient, it shouldalso serve to underscore the importance o the principleso ATHENA in a more competitive, globally-based society.

The principles behind the ATHENA Awards excellence and initiative, service and leadership mirror

to a great extent Michigan States own core values o quality, inclusiveness and connectivity, said MSU President LouAnna Simon. Honoring and modeling these ideals iso great importance to all o us as we con ront the very di cult challenges o the 21st century in an increasingly global, knowledge-based economy

ATHENA supporters also hope to expand opportunitiesor women by encouraging annual award recipients to

share their talents and wisdom in mentoring relationshipswith the next generation o leaders a concept embracedby past honorees.

Many o the ATHENA awardees are my role modelsand I am so proud to have received this recognition andjoined this outstanding group o women, said StateRepresentative Joan Bauer. Most important, the ATHENA Award does not end with the ATHENA designation. It bringswith it the responsibility to encourage and empowerother women to succeed in their business or pro ession,to improve our communities, and to take on leadershiproles.

The ATHENA Award is a great recognition and honor,

said Theda Rudd, associate director o Career Services at Michigan State University. However, the award creates anobligation and expectation that we continue to give back and to be involved in our community, and not rest untilall you can do is done. I believe that means until the endo li e.

Some past ATHENA winners and the year in which theyreceived the award: Theda Rudd (seated 2003), l-r: Lou

Anna K. Simon (2004), Paula Cunningham (2005),Sheri Jones (2006), Joan Bauer (1996) and PaulaBlanchard Stone (2007).

opponent and ormer Congressman Tim Walbergsparred intensely as the two highlighted their di -

erences at the 7th Congressional Candidate Forumhosted by the Lansing Regional Chamber o Com-merce. The event, sponsored by AT&T, was held

on October 14 at the Lansing Lexington Hotel.Schauer, a Battle Creek democrat, was elect-ed to Congress in 2008 when he unseated thenrepublican Congressman Walberg. The two havebeen engaged in what is viewed as one o the tight-est congressional races in the country. Millions o dollars o political ads have been poured into thehigh-stakes congressional race.

About the only issue Walberg and Schaueragreed upon was their support to extend the Bushtax cuts that are set to expire at the end o theyear. The two candidates di ered sharply on a variety o issues including job creation, the ed-eral auto bailout, ree trade agreements, healthcare re orm, ederal stimulus, cutting government spending and the role o the ederal government ineducation.

Lansing City Council re used to approve muchneeded incentives or construction o the Marshall Street Armory and Market Place projects. The 4-4 vote reject-ing a brown eld redevelopment plan threatens the utureo the $23.1 million mixed-use downtown Lansing Market Place project planned by the Gillespie Group.

Four members o the Lansing City Council havetaken a stand against jobs and investment, said KristinBeltzer, LRCC senior vice president, Government Relationsand Public A airs. The councils vote not only threatens

the Gillespie projects, it could cost the city millions in stateincentives and sends a very negative anti-business messageto other potential developers.

The city council had an opportunity to reconsider itsoriginal rejection o the Gillespie projects, but on Octo-ber 18 again re used with the same 4-4 vote. Dozens o residents wearing I Love Lansing shirts showed up insupport o the projects. Social media sites and radio talk shows have also been strongly opposed to the city coun-
