Mike Bocking will again represent the NDP.

The veteran campaign-er from Silverdale was selected Sunday by the Maple Ridge-Mission NDP riding association to run in next May’s pro-vincial election.

Bocking defeated Maple Ridge music law-yer Bob D’Eith 81-45 to win the nomination at a meeting in Silverdale.

“It was a long cam-paign,” Bocking said Monday, noting the two had been competing for 14 months.

The results, however, weren’t a surprise since both candidates basically knew who was support-ing them.

“The numbers are right in line with what we thought would happen,” Bocking said.

Next spring will be his fifth attempt at getting elected.

Bocking ran federally against Conservative MP Randy Kamp in 2004, 2006 and 2008, losing

each time.He ran against cur-

rent Liberal MLA Marc Dalton in Maple Ridge-Mission in 2009, losing by 68 votes.

Maple Ridge-Mis-sion’s western boundary is 224 Street and extends east to Cedar Street in Mission.

“I think people have had enough of the BC Liberals and so I think there’s a perception that we’ve got a very good chance to win this riding, because of the very close result last time.”

This time around, Bocking said voters will remember the growing provincial deficit, the promise of the govern-ment not to bring in the HST and the attempted closing of the emergency ward of Mission Memo-rial Hospital.

Bocking is currently president of the Media Union of B.C., Local 2000, a position he’ll maintain unless he’s suc-cessful in his run to be-come MLA.

“We’ll have even more volunteers this time.”

He’ll also have six months to prepare for the vote, while he had only six weeks during the

Bocking to run for NDP againAbbotsford-Mission nomination meeting happening Dec. 6 at Best Western

YEAR END EVENT

BY PHIL MELNYCHUKBlack Press

Eight years ago, when Hardeep Sidhu first bought the Ruskin gas station and general store and started selling gasoline, the price differ-ence between Metro Vancouver and Mission, in the Fraser Valley Re-gional District, was about five cents a litre.

But the gap has grown over the last few years as the gas tax was hiked – to the point that Metro Van-couver’s transit taxes add 17 cents to a litre and the trickle of motor-ists crossing into Silverdale a few kilometres away in west Mission for lower prices, has grown into a flood that’s washing away Sidhu’s sta-tion on 287th Street and Lougheed Highway.

“I used to have almost 12 employ-ees, but now I have three or four. Now I’m thinking I’m going to close it because I’m losing money,” he said Wednesday.

“I’m so far away, I don’t have any services.”

Sidhu’s property is also on well water, which means the property wouldn’t work for a fast food restau-rant, which needs municipal water.

“If I can’t do something, maybe I’m going to close it. Because there’s nothing else you can do in that loca-tion.”

That could happen next spring, he added.

Sidhu said he used to open 24

hours a day, then cut hours from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., then 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. as business dropped.

The cash flow tells the same story. An average day now brings in

about $500 in gas sales. It was 10 times that when he first bought the

business.If he closes, it’s unlikely he’ll sell

the property after spending $800,000 installing tanks and gasoline pumps when he first purchased it.

Sidhu also pays $36,000 yearly in property taxes, and has no tran-

sit and no water or sewer services, instead relying on septic tank and well water.

The lack of Metro Vancouver water and sewer restricts any future development options.

So far, Sidhu is at a loss at what

to do. Wednesday he was charging $1.26.9 a litre for regular unleaded, while the competition across the border were asking $1.11.9.

The convenience store is also part of the business, and while it’s a service to the people who live along 287th Street, it can’t support the en-tire business.

“I should be out of the Greater Vancouver Regional District [Metro Vancouver], then I can sell the same as they’re selling [in Silverdale, in west Mission] the gas for.”

If that was possible, he could re-hire those dozen people from the area and open 24 hours a day.

He says Premier Christy Clark talks about creating jobs, “but these jobs are going away for almost no reason.”

According to Ministry of Finance, TransLink’s dedicated motor fuel tax is now 17 cents a litre. The latest two cents were added last spring.

Fraser Valley Regional District has no transit tax.

The gas tax, however, isn’t pull-ing in as much cash as it used to for TransLink, as motorists either gas up outside the region or simply drive less.

The transportation authority took in $312 million in 2011 from the fuel tax, according to its annual report.

That was down nearly $12 mil-lion from 2010 as motorists bought six per cent less gasoline or diesel within Metro Vancouver.

previous election.Bocking said transportation and

transit are at the top of the list of issues, as well as health care and education.

“The environment is becoming more of an issue as well.”

Honesty and integrity in govern-ment, he added, are other concerns.

Bocking said the NDP may put some efforts into winning Abbots-ford-Mission, with the retirement of Liberal Randy Hawes. He pointed out the NDP grabbed a third of the votes last time.

Nomination for that riding takes place in December.

Dalton said Maple Ridge-Mission historically, has been a competitive riding. “I don’t take it for granted it at all,” he said.

He said he’ll be running on the

government’s record on the econ-omy and the environment. “That’s where people will have to make a decision.”

While polling numbers have im-proved for the Liberals, there is still lots of work to do, he added.

Dalton pointed out he helped turn around the planned closure of Mission Memorial Hospital, while Highway 7 has been improved and there are two new bridges in the riding.

So far, Dalton hasn’t heard of a Conservative candidate entering the race which could split the right-of-centre vote favouring the NDP.

Luck and Gibson compete for Liberal nomination

Abbotsford’s longest-serving councilor has confirmed that he will seek the BC Liberal Party nomi-nation for the Abbotsford-Mission riding.

Simon Gibson, who has served three decades on council, also teach-es at the School of Business at the University of the Fraser Valley.

“I’m confident that I have the skills and experience needed to be a strong representative for Abbots-ford-Mission,” Gibson said.

“I want to make sure Abbots-ford-Mission continues to have a representative that will work with Premier Christy Clark to create an economic climate for job creation in our province.”

He also said that he knows both communities well and has lived in the riding for over 12 years. He cur-rently teaches at both Abbotsford and Mission campuses of UFV and has been a member of many inter-municipal committees during his political career.

Gibson currently serves as chair of the Abbotsford-Mission Tran-sit committee and is a member of

the Fraser Valley Regional District board and the Fraser Valley Re-gional Library board.

“I sincerely believe the BC Liber-als represent a strong free enterprise alternative to the NDP and that the current renewal is making the Liber-als attractive to increasingly more British Columbians.”

Gibson said he is committing to offices in both communities to ensure convenient access to constituents.

“I’m looking forward to the chal-lenges of serving as an MLA and will be fully accessible to residents regarding provincial issues.”

He is married to Joy and they have two adult daughters and one grandson. They are expecting their second grandchild at the end of De-cember.

Gibson is well known as a run-ner and recently ran the Victoria Marathon in just over four hours and was one of a handful of participants

earlier this year who completed in the Run for Water 55 km Ultra Marathon.

Gibson is not the only municipal politician who is seeking the Liberal nomination. Mission Coun. Tony Luck has also announced his inten-tions to vie for the party’s support for the Abbotsford-Mission riding.

Luck has lived in Abbotsford and Mission for the past 30 years. He currently works as a financial con-sultant.

“We need to ensure that we keep British Columbia’s economy on the right track, and I know the BC Liber-als are the best party to do that,” said Luck. “I want to run for the BC Liber-als in Abbotsford-Mission because I believe in the direction of this govern-ment under Premier Christy Clark.”

The Liberal nomination meeting is set for Thursday, Dec. 6 at the Best Western Mission City Lodge on Lougheed Highway.

A councillor is implor-ing Mission youth to get involved after he noticed the lack of young people at the recent downtown revitalization forum.

“We need your input — this is your future,” said Coun. Tony Luck, after hearing an update on the downtown plan-ning process from Sha-ron Fletcher, director of long range planning and special projects.

About 120 people turned up to the district-hosted open house last week to share ideas with consultants and planners from HB Lanarc, the company at the helm of the project.

Fletcher said 60 peo-ple stuck around for the planning workshop that explored urban de-sign, transit movement through and around the downtown, public spaces and streetscapes, arts and culture, and land use.

The next downtown planning open house is scheduled for Jan. 17 from 6-8 p.m. at a yet-to-be-determined loca-tion.

Full steam ahead for Silverdale substation

Construction will begin next week on the estimated $46-million BC Hydro Silverdale Substation Project.

BC Hydro capital projects spokesperson Samantha Howard re-affirmed to council the need for the new hydro hub, saying the local sub-station is at capacity.

She also provided de-tails on the scope of the project.

The fully-enclosed Sil-verdale substation will stand 1.5 levels high, with low-profile outside equipment.

Some minimal veg-etation clearing will be required, along with landscaping to limit any visual impacts from Lougheed Highway, Nelson Street and Silver-dale Avenue.

On the subject of aesthetics, Coun. Dave Hensman requested shrubs be placed around the Mission substation in the centrally-located area of Seventh Avenue and Cedar Street.

Mission bans shark fins Coun. Tony Luck suc-

cessfully moved to ban the possession, sale, trade and distribution of shark fins in Mission at last Monday night’s council meeting.

“I think this comple-ments some of the things that some of the other cities are doing in the province and around the world,” said Luck. “This isn’t just a B.C. issue, it’s a global issue.”

Luck even went so far as to call for a boycott of

the shark fin trade.Coun. Jenny Stevens

questioned if it was a political exercise, adding that she was not aware of shark fin soup being served in Mission.

“I’m a little bit con-cerned about creating a bylaw that would per-haps be impossible to en-force,” said Stevens.

Mayor Ted Adlem sup-ported the motion.

“I think if you listen to what the United Nations is saying, the world’s oceans will be fished out by the year 2050,” said Adlem.

Council also voted in favour of amending Mission’s ticket infor-mation bylaw to include a $500 fine for contra-

veners of the ban.

Mission to donate $250,000 to Clayburn Legacy Maintenance Building project

The municipality will provide $250,000 to the Mission Heritage Asso-ciation for the Clayburn Legacy Maintenance Building project at Fra-ser River Heritage Park.

The funds, which will be taken from the dis-trict’s gaming reserve, will be distributed incre-mentally based on proj-ect progress reports from the MHA.

The estimated con-tracted cost of the proj-ect is approximately $1 million; the MHA fig-ures they can deliver the

Clayburn Legacy Main-tenance Building for 60 per cent of that through community partnerships and sponsorships.

A public washroom alongside 2,400-square feet of maintenance space would anchor the bottom of the building, while the 2,000-square foot top floor would be designated as classroom or meeting space. As well, a proposed green-house would be attached to one of the sides.

“I’m certain that we are going to have a fabu-lous addition to Fraser River Heritage Park,” said Mayor Ted Adlem, following a presentation by MHA at last Mon-day’s council meeting.

Mission school district is getting $78,011 in provincial money to buy a school bus.

The funding comes from a $14-million fund or-ganized through the government that will see 125 new buses rolling into districts throughout B.C.

These new clean diesel buses reduce exhaust par-ticulate emissions by 90 per cent compared to the previous 1994 standard, said a press release. The buses also obtain 30 to 60 per cent better mileage than gasoline-fuelled buses.

B.C.’s ritual day of shame over child pov-erty has come and gone

once again, with politicians trading blame and time-worn talking points.

The occasion was an annual gathering staged at the BC Teachers’ Federation office in downtown Vancouver. It is organized by First Call, an umbrella group sponsored by the BCTF, the BC Govern-ment Employees’ Union and a collection of like-minded “anti-poverty activists,” as they describe themselves in their latest report.

The familiar script unfolded. The report misinterprets fed-eral income statistics from two years ago and calls for a long list of uncosted, but hugely expensive measures they as-sert will make B.C. the first jurisdiction in human history to eradicate poverty.

A sampling: provide raises for employees and contrac-tors at all levels of govern-ment until they are making an unspecified “living wage,” because we all know how public sector workers uniquely suffer from pay and pension inequality.

Raise the minimum wage

again and index it to inflation. Establish universal public dental care, prescription drug and eye care programs, and daycare. (Dismiss targeted programs that already provide this.)

Raise welfare rates and expand eligibility for employ-ment insurance. Cut tuition and provide more student grants. Eliminate home-lessness.

I wrote about these numbers when Statistics Canada re-leased them back in June. They showed a modest improve-ment nationally and provincially in what they measure, which is not poverty, but the relative relation-ship between income groups.

My point is not to deny that there are many poor people in B.C. and Canada. There are. But at this point we don’t even have a reliable way of measur-ing the problem, let alone ef-fective solutions.

The report states: “Statistics Canada said the child poverty rate in Greater Vancouver

was 18.4 per cent in 2010 …” No, Statistics Canada didn’t say that. They said what they always say, that “Low-Income Cut-Off,” or LICO figures, are not an accurate measure of poverty.

The political response was equally predictable. Veteran NDP MP Libby Davies led the

charge in Ottawa. The government must establish a

national anti-poverty strategy with firm annual goals, she said, reciting the identical script of the B.C. NDP.

Davies didn’t mention that Mani-toba is among the provinces with such a plan. It’s the only province that finished below B.C. in the percentage of

children living in low-income homes. These plans are mainly gesture politics, providing the appearance of action.

Social Development Minis-ter Stephanie Cadieux spoke on behalf of the BC Liberal government, and she, too, stuck to a familiar script. The best path out of poverty is a

job, she said. This is true, but also obvious.

Then Cadieux went on about the “B.C. Jobs Plan,” which has its own sorry record of misrepresented federal sta-tistics.

Here’s one of the report’s more blindingly obvious sec-tion headings: “Child poverty concentrated in big cities.” No kidding. The whole population is concentrated in big cities.

Herein lies a clue that is missed by “activists” for ever-larger government. Poor peo-ple are increasingly crowded into the most expensive plac-es. If I’m on welfare or work-ing in a low-wage job and re-ceiving a provincial rent subsi-dy (one of those things LICO doesn’t measure), should I live in downtown Victoria or Van-couver? Shouldn’t I relocate to a smaller community where housing is cheaper?

There are lots of complica-tions to this, but some kind of incentive to relocate could help big and small communi-ties.

Taxes keep risingMany people wonder why they have such perpetu-

ally empty pockets. There is minimal price inflation, interest rates are low, yet at the end of most weeks, there is little left over for extras.

There are several possible explanations, and one of them may surprise some people.

While some suggest people need to be financially literate, that is only a part of the puzzle. A lack of wage growth for most working people, other than government workers, is another part of the puzzle, but again, it only explains a portion of the problem.

Perhaps the missing link is how inflation is cal-culated. According to the Bank of Canada, the of-ficial inflation rate is based on a basket of consumer goods, including food, shelter, furniture, clothing, transportation and recreation.

Inflation has been at low rates for years, and inter-est rates are much the same. As a result, people have borrowed more money than ever — much of it to buy homes. Nowhere is that more true than in the Lower Mainland.

Interest costs are thus draining a good portion of peoples’ incomes. But the fact that inflation isn’t being calculated on some of our costs may be an even bigger factor behind our empty pockets. Low official inflation rates mean employers don’t feel the need to give wage increases and governments feel there is plenty of taxing room.

Taxes are not considered inflationary. Thus steady jumps in medical service premiums in B.C. are of no consequence. Nor was the HST, which added tax to many items that formerly only had the GST applied.

In recent years, the biggest contributors to our empty wallets are governments. But they get away with it, because there’s minimal “inflation.”

Editor, The Record:Re: Letters are ‘fear

mongering:’ Jewell, Nov. 22 edition.

Our new council has done some very good things, and none great-er than the decision to broadcast council meet-ings on its website. If they hadn’t chosen to do so, I might have missed the obvious abandon-ment of basic respect and democracy that occurred Nov. 19.

By his own count, Coun. Jeff Jewell re-ported that 75 per cent of the public’s budget feedback this year raised concerns about the deci-sion not to move for-ward with the district’s strategic fire plan. It was based on a year of analysis by former Chief Frank Ryan, using data that clearly showed Mis-sion’s response times in the downtown area did not meet national stan-dards. The reason was simple; our community

is growing, but it has been a struggle to main-tain a suitably sized paid-on-call force.

Our volunteers knew that Ryan’s recommen-dation to hire profession-als was not a slap in their faces, as so many on council implied Monday night. Indeed, the plan called for a composite force using a core of 16 full-time firefighters —

hired gradually over a period of years — along with a healthy comple-ment of volunteers. And where would we hire our full-timers? From the best of our volunteers, because, after all, they have proven themselves to this community and Mission has invested sig-nificantly in their train-ing and development.

But Jewell and the

rest of council chose to dismiss the feedback be-cause, in their words, it looked like an organized campaign.

They accuse the letter writers of fear monger-ing, bullying and mis-leading the public. Such language is incredibly disrespectful to our fire department as it suggests

they are more interest-ed in self-reward than in protecting our lives and property. Having worked with these dedi-cated men and women, I can testify that nothing is further from the truth.

Jewell insisted coun-cil will stay its course, and demanded that the “organized campaign” cease and desist. He in-

dicated that nothing will change the council’s mandate of low taxes, and his colleagues ap-plauded this notion.

Shouldn’t decisions about the size of our po-lice and fire squads be done based on standards of safety, as opposed to political promises about tax rates? After all, why pay taxes if core ser-vices aren’t being pro-vided?

Mission’s council

needs to show a high-er regard for its cor-respondents, delegates and questioners. And it needs to undertake a simple, arms-length and expert analysis of the strategic fire plan rather than simply dismissing it out of hand. The first suggestion is a matter of a democracy. The sec-ond is a matter of public welfare.

The West Coast Ex-press (WCE) Santa Trains will be depart-ing Mission for points west Dec. 8 and 15, with tickets offered to passengers in return for new, unwrapped toys.

Now in its 16th year, the Santa Train collects toys on behalf of Christ-mas bureaus throughout the communities WCE serves including Mis-sion.

In 2011, more than 3,900 toys and $1,260 in cash donations were collected along the route.

“When we first launched the Santa Train 16 years ago, we carried about 1,200 pas-sengers over the two-day event and now we are carrying more than 2,500 passengers on the two Saturdays,” said Fred Cummings, WCE’s president and general manager. “WCE pas-sengers have embraced the Santa Train because it’s a fun-filled way to give back to families in need in their communi-ties.”

The trains leave Mis-sion at 10 a.m., and depart eastbound from Waterfront at 4 p.m.

Santa will be on board the morning train to Wa-terfront Station to visit with kids of all ages, and he can be found in the WCE concourse at Waterfront Station from 3 to 4 p.m. for photos.

WCE is also support-ing a food drive in the northeast sector by col-lecting non-perishable food donations at any of its stations from Dec. 8-15.

The Angel Tree is making its third annual appearance at Mission’s Envision Financial.

The local credit union is displaying a decorat-ed Christmas tree with angel ornaments, each representing a child, youth or senior in the local community. The public is encouraged to take an angel from the tree and return it with a new and unwrapped gift to any participating loca-tion by Dec. 8.

All gifts and/or cash donations collected will be given to Mission Community Services Society’s Christmas Bu-reau and Food Centre. In addition to selecting an angel off each tree, be-ginning this year, people also have the option of selecting a tin can orna-ment off the tree, and returning it with a non-perishable food item or cash donation.

“One in five children in B.C. live under the pover-ty line and this year alone, B.C. food banks served over 28,000 kids. That’s why we are so proud of our Angel Tree Program,” said Envision’s Susan Byrom, manager of cor-porate citizenship.

This year, Envision has created a video to share the message of the Angel Tree program which can be viewed at www.you-tube.com/envisionfinan-cial. For every view, En-vision will donate $1 to the Angel Tree program (up to $10,000) which will then be distributed to the program’s com-munity partners.

The Mission Record Thursday, November 29, 2012 11

Job seekers are in luck when it comes to the commercial road trans-portation industry in British Columbia.

Trucking companies throughout BC require professional drivers, mechanics, dispatchers and operations staff right now, which means that job seekers with experi-ence and/or training may find work within their preferred region.

For those considering training prior to joining the workforce, demand for skilled workers in the industry is likely to grow – to 2020 and beyond.

There are a number of reasons for this. For truck drivers, the industry is facing a North America-wide shortage because most are 45 years of age or older and nearing re-tirement. In fact, in Can-ada, according to a report by the Canada Trucking Human Resources Coun-cil, 58 percent of long-haul truck drivers fall in this age range.

Similar shortages exist for other jobs, including diesel engine and heavy duty mechanics.

Aside from worker shortages, economic growth in the Asia-Pacif-ic Gateway is also driv-ing demand for workers in transportation.

This applies not only to companies in the Lower Mainland, but in other regions as well, since the Asia-Pacific “Gateway” is actually made up of an integrated supply chain of airports, seaports, rail and road connections, and border crossings, from Prince Rupert to Surrey, with links sup-plied by trucking.

Today’s trucking in-dustry is an exciting place to be. Equipment in many companies is state of the art, meaning

increased comfort and ease for drivers and op-portunities for mechan-ics to work with tech-nologically advanced systems, keeping both their skills and interest engaged. Dispatch relies on sophisticated track-ing and routing systems. Others on the operations side also use informa-tion technology of many kinds to deal with every-thing from licences and

permits, to customer ser-vices, accounting, sales and marketing.

And, people joining the industry have many career choices. Drivers, for example, may work close to home as pick-up and delivery or short-haul drivers. Those who like the idea of travel-ling across Canada or North America can be-come long-haul driv-ers for an employer or

work as owner-operators. Drivers may haul con-sumer goods, fuel, logs, heavy-duty equipment, livestock – most of what we purchase or consume spent some time on the road with a commercial truck!

If you already have experience as a driver, mechanic or operations

worker, most companies advertise jobs on their websites.

Members of the BC

Trucking Association from across the province may post jobs under Ca-reers on www.bctruck-ing.com, and the pro-vincial and federal gov-ernments maintain job

sites at WorkBC (http://www.workbc.ca/Jobs/) and Working in Canada (http://www.workingin-canada.gc.ca/ - choose to Explore Careers by Occupation, then by Re-gion).

Within your own com-munity, it may also pay to approach a company you’d like to work for, drop off a résumé and in-quire if and when they’ll be hiring.

If you’d like to enter the industry but need training, there are also many avenues to explore.

Although there is not a standard training course for professional drivers, there are numerous pri-vate schools throughout B.C. that offer programs.

“Once our students graduate and obtain their Class 1 drivers licence I would estimate that 90% will find work within the transportation industry with a three-month pe-riod,” said Abbotsford-based Valley Driving School instructor Frank Olson.

But why so many op-portunities?

The job market in the Fraser Valley transporta-tion industry has proven to be recession proof to some degree, said Olson, unlike some sectors of the private and public job market. People, busi-nesses and government need products and raw material moved, whether this is across town or across North America.

“The second influenc-ing fact would be the na-ture of the job itself,” he said. The type of people that are drawn to the pro-fession love the freedom and opportunity to travel.

Living in the Lower Mainland and hearing the word “snow” can be downright chilling.

While there still is no sign of snow in the forecast, there is a chance that sometime during the winter months we may get some snowfall. It’s best to prepare ahead of time.

As with many things, common sense and a little elbow grease tend to work best when controlling your winter wonderland.

Snow removal is easier if you follow these simple guidelines:

Driveways and sidewalks• As soon as snow or freezing

rain begins to fall, spread a melting agent on the driveway and regularly traveled walkways

to help slow the freezing process.

• Grab a shovel and get outside as soon as you can, and don’t wait for the sun to melt the snow naturally — a sudden drop in temperature can solidify snowfall quickly. Also, clear more than just a single-shovel path on the walkways, which will make walking safer.

• If you are unable to remove a patch of ice, crack it with an ice chisel or heavy-duty scraping tool to expose the surface to the air. This will help accelerate the melting process. Essential tools of the trade

• Melting agents. Also referred to as de-icers, these are specific chemical compounds of salt and

heat-generating solids packaged in bags ranging from 10 lb to 50 lb, and even 80 lb. Spread the granules liberally on the driveway and walkway, but be sure to wear gloves, as melting agents can sometimes cause mild skin irritation.

• Snow shovels. Today’s newer models are made stronger yet lighter to allow you to move snow easier than before. Choose one with an ergonomically correct handle to prevent straining your back.

• Snow pushers. Good for moving heavy, wet snow, these tools do what their name implies: They assist you in pushing large volumes of snow from one end of the driveway to the other.

Come down to the Clarke Theatre on Dec. 13 for the 13th annual Christmas at the Clarke

benefit concert, starting at 7 p.m.

The stage will be set for an evening of old and

new tunes and holiday favourites by some of the best singers and musi-cians in the valley.

The event raises funds and awareness for the Mission Community Services Christmas Bu-reau and the emergency housing shelter oper-

ated by the Women’s Resource Society of the Fraser Valley.

Hometown crooner, Kenny Hess, will return to the show this year, after missing the last few concerts due to schedul-ing conflicts. Hess’ deep, rich voice, easy, comfort-able style, and his rap-port with the audience

makes him a favourite.Horizon, featur-

ing Crystal Hicks, will also be returning to the Clarke stage as well as Rob Hess along with the singers from Halo.

Rounding out the show this year will be the Hatz-ic Secondary School jazz band and the Heritage Park Secondary School

choir with their youthful, energetic talents.

You can also do a bit of Christmas shopping at the silent auction, which will be featuring items from local businesses and community groups.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and students, and $10 for children. They are

available in Mission at London Drugs, Rex Cox Men’s Wear, Murdoch’s Book Shoppe, Shoppers Drug Mart, Prospera Credit Union and Fra-ser Valley Building Sup-plies.

For group tickets or more information call 604-820-3961 or John at 604-217-1863.

Help ring in the festive season and support your local food bank and Mission Community Servic-es Christmas Bureau by attend-ing Mission Rotary Club’s annual Christmas Carol Festival held at the Clarke Theatre Thursday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m.

This year’s festival features Der-oche, Dewdney, and Cherry Hill

elementary schools, Heritage Park Secondary and Valley Christian School.

Also performing are Joy Vox Community Choir, the Fraser Val-ley Stage Society and the Chilli-wack Symphony Chorus.

Admission is by donation to the Food Bank and Christmas Bureau and Rotarians will be on hand in

the lobby to assist Phil Hope from Mission Community Services in collecting the items. This event has a long history in Mission and has a sing-a-long portion at the end of the program which for many marks the beginning of the Christ-mas season in our community. For further information call Rotarian Pam Alexis at 604-302-2005.

DON’T PUT YOUR TRUST IN THINGS OF THIS WORLD

Young children seem to have the utmost trust in their parents. For instance, they know that whenever they are not feeling well, their parents are there to comfort them and do whatever is necessary to make them better. A parent’s love is special, and it seems that there is nothing that they would not do for their children. As adults, we should remember that all things of this world are temporary and that there is nothing we can truly depend on or be absolutely sure of. A loved one passing away, or finances being low, or a serious illness could turn our world upside down in an instant. However, we should take heart; there is good news: we are God’s children, and His love for us is even greater than that of our parents’. And although it takes enormous courage to put our complete trust in God, we must believe that He wants only what is good for us. What is required of us is to see God’s work in everything we do, and develop perfect trust to accept the trials of his life, and to know that with whatever difficulties we are faced, God will not abandon us. The first step in increasing our trust in God is to thank Him daily for His many blessings and to always go to Him with our anxieties.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him,

and He will make your paths straight.N.I.V. Proverbs 3:5-6

Roadrunners vie for AA dominanceBY JASON ROESSLEMission Record

Another year, an-other opportunity for both Mission Second-ary School’s varsity and junior varsity football teams to win the AA provincials in this Satur-day’s Subway Bowl.

The varsity team, lead by coach Kevin Watrin,

squeaked past Ballenas last Saturday afternoon at UBC, 28-27.

“[Ballenas] couldn’t run, but had good pass-ing, and it was the oppo-site for us,” said Watrin.

The back-and-forth game eventually came out in Mission’s fa-vour, which showcased another strong perfor-mance by MSS quarter-

back Kevin Wiens, who rushed for 70 yards, scored three touchdowns and blanketed Ballenas’ most talented receiver.

“Wiens is, in my opin-ion, the best all around AA football player in BC and one of the best high school football players,” said Watrin.

And the provincial all-star committee agrees,

naming Wiens on Tues-day the provincial AA all-star defensive MVP, alongside Hyatt Smith who was honoured as an all star as a defensive linebacker and earned a B.C. Secondary Schools Football Association Academic Scholarship valued at $1,000.

Ryan Pye was also recognized as an all-star

offensive lineman.The varsity team now

faces the South Delta Sun Devils on Saturday at 3 p.m. at BC Place stadium, a team they haven’t played this year.

“It’s going to be close. It’ll come down to four or five big plays and whoever gets those,” said Watrin.

On the JV side, the Roadrunners defeated the John Barsby Bull-dogs 19-16, the team that took the provincial title from them last year, but fell in 2010.

They will face the Abby Panthers at 10 a.m., said coach John Kapty.

“They’re big and physical,” he said, not-ing Mission’s test is to utilize their speed. “I think it’s a fair match up.”

The Panthers had de-feated MSS earlier this year 20-18, but Kapty is confident his team can win the provincials again.

“It’s like I always tell the players: It’s not who’s the best team, but the team that plays the best,” he said.
