Local Living Sunday, September 25, 2016 REAL ESTATE OBITUARIES CLASSIFIEDS B SECTION n Eric Tarkleson works to bring electricity to rural, impoverished East Africa By Sally Rummel [email protected]; 810-629-8282 Eric Tarkleson grew up in the Lake Fenton area, but today he’s bringing power to the people halfway around the world in Tanzania (pronounced Tan-za-NEE-a) in East Africa. Tarkleson, 31, son of Scott and Jonie Tar- kleson of Mundy Township, is home for six weeks between projects as general manager/ chief engineer for Enda Solar, which special- izes in medium to large-scale energy and industrial solutions for the emerging market. “I worked on a engineering project in Tan- zania in college, and I just kept going back,” said Tarkleson. Tanzania has been Tarkleson’s home since May 2015, although he made close to a dozen trips there during his years of undergradu- ate and graduate studies at Michigan State University. He was a 2004 graduate of Lake Fenton High School. Tarkleson graduated in 2013 from MSU with his master’s degree in electrical engi- neering, with a specialty of power electronic engineering. MSU currently supports ve primary and secondary schools near Arusha, Tanzania with internet-based computer labs. Three of the schools are solar powered. While most of the native people of Tan- zania are equipped with cell phones and will walk miles and miles through villages and mountainous regions to charging stations, they largely live without electricity to drive any of their other basic needs. “They may not have in- ternet, but they can pay bills, communicate, transfer mon- ey, even make money using their phones,” said Tarkleson. His goal is to work with his company to build infrastructure in Tanzania to support manu- facturing in this African country. “We have support from American and Swiss companies, as well as a very compe- tent staff in Tanzania,” said Tarkleson. “The people here are very smart, it’s just that the Lake Fenton grad brings power to the people of Tanzania ‘‘ I worked on an engineering project in Tanzania in college, and I just kept going back. ’’ Eric Tarkleson 2004 Lake Fenton High School graduate Tarkleson’s parents visit him in Tanzania this summer Scott and Jonie Tarkleson of Mundy Township were able to get a first-hand view of their son, Eric’s daily life and work in Tanzania, when they visited him there in June for two- and-a-half weeks. They returned as different people, for having had this once-in-a-lifetime travel experience. “The poverty, it’s hard to get used to it,” said Jonie, 63. But she was able to separate the poverty conditions from the people themselves. They are beautiful, healthier people with colorful personalities, she said. “They seem to be happy with their lives. nLook for the blues, reddish-brown shades, unexpected neutrals, pops of color

By Sally [email protected]; 810-629-8282 Each season, the Pantone Color Insti-tute releases the shades that dominate the fashion collections seen on the run-way, which will undoubtedly find their way into your closet and home furnishings. The Top 10 for Fall 2016 are heavy on the blues, as well as reddish-brown shades. You won’t have to overhaul your closet, though; the soft hues that dominated Spring 2016, intended to bring calm in an increasingly busy

landscape, are still relevant for this fall. The desire for tranquility, strength and optimism has inspired a color palette led by the “Blue” family. These uplifting hues (a deep one called Riverside, as well as the lighter Airy Blue) appear alongside de-pendable, but unexpected neutrals, like Sharkskin gray and Spicy Mustard yellow. Blue skies represent constancy as they are always above us; grays give a feeling of stability; red tones invite confidence and warmth, while the hot pinkish-purples and spicy mustard yel-lows suggest a tough of the exotic, ac-cording to Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. These shades pop against the rest of the Top 10, including the warmer Aurora Red and pinkish-purply Bodacious. Pantone’s big themes are stability and confidence in these reliable colors shown in bold shades.

nYour eyewear can make your own personal fashion statement By Sally [email protected]; 810-629-8282 There is no area of fashion that joins style and function together more than eyewear. Glasses can actually be your most flexible fashion accessory, changing with the seasons, your moods and your styles. No longer are glasses a geeky vision necessity — now they are a staple fashion accessory with trends of their own.

Here are a few to take a look at:

Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR) is a unique program to the area. There are millions of community cats killed in shelters because they are unadoptable. TNR is recognized as the most humane and effective strategy for reducing the community cat population. Anyone caring for a colony of feral or stray cats may fill out an application to have the cats fixed at a low cost. Go to adoptapetfenton.com/tnr. Ask about our low cost spay/neuter for those with a financial need.
