10 Ways to Makeover your HealtH & BodyBy: Bonnielee Cuevas

Women are an ever changing species. They are always transforming themselves and becoming exotic butterflies ready to take flight on another adventure. Women are also very giving creatures. After taking time out to give to everyone else they forget how to be free. They fail to

take flight and embark on new journeys. They lose their health and the body they deserve. The perfect body is about perfect health not about perfect size. As the holi-days roll around here are my top 10 makeover tips.

• No woman should eat below 1200 calo-ries a day. It is unhealthy. However, you should keep track of what you are putting in your mouth every day. In an age of technology download that wicked app to your phone. The one that keeps track of your food and exer-cise for FREE! I recommend My Fitness Pal at www.myfit-nesspal.com. When you know what is going in and how much you are putting out you are more inclined to work harder. • Treadmills and elliptical machines are B-O-R-I-N-G. We are mommies, wives and girlfriends by day and fashionistas by night! There is no time to walk a boring treadmill. Instead take to a combination of exercises that make you feel like you are headed right to the club. The infamous Zumba Fitness at www.zumba.com that combines Latin Rhythms and cardio packed workout to maximize caloric burn and give you a hottie body. Another amazing workout is the bar method at www.barmethod.com that combines interval training and provides muscle shaping techniques of isometrics. All of these formats get you in and out within an hour. Mix it up and commit to a minimum of 3 days per week. • Cocktails anyone? A girl without cocktails is like a girl without her water! The fact is ever girl loves a cocktail filled girl’s night out but alcohol packs on the calories. Why not opt out of beer and hard liquor? Opt in for white wine spritzer’s and Skinny Margaritas. Cut out half the calories and still pack in a girl’s night out to remember. Ssshh what happens at girl’s night out stays at girl’s night out. • This is NOT about a size “0” this is about health above all else. So to remember your healthy transformation schedule a photo op. Yes, you heard me! Doll your hot, sexy self up and book a photography ses-sion. I do not agree that you should look your worst in your before picture. I believe people get better. Take a picture of you looking fabulous and then the next time you reach a goal such as a dress size or a new weight, go ahead and schedule another photo op. Frame these pic-tures and keep them as memories of how each time you became a better version of yourself.

• Friends may fail you! The fact is that friends may fail you during this healthy transformation. They may question your motives. A twinge of jealousy may develop or they simply can’t understand. You must not be angry with them. Take this time to do a good deed and pay it forward. Educate them on why healthy is bet-ter for you and ask them to join you. Tell them how much you need them. If by any chance all else fails then it is time to say good bye. Not out of anger but out of a ne-cessity to succeed. They say it is lonely at the top of the ladder of success. It is because sometimes we have to be out with the old and in with the new. It’s harsh but in the end this is your journey and you need to want it bad enough to see the value in a lifetime of health. • The healthy makeover is a LONG one. But part of this journey is put-ting your big girl pant-ies on and knowing that you need to take it one meal at a time, one workout at a time, and one day at a time. Set mini - goals! From here until Sunday you will lose 1lb, or 1 inch off of your waist, or cutting out sweets. Smaller goals are easily attainable. • Curves must stay!!! This is not, I REPEAT about being a size “o”. Curvy women love their curves. The secret that no one knows is that it is our source of power. Yes, girls I have given away our secret! It is ok. No one can take it from us. Only we can give it away. Curvy goddesses you need to remember to stop thinking small and start thinking big. Not as in size. As in health. Big results equal just as many curves with a healthier curve. • Never stop. This will be a life long journey. It is one that will take changing bad habits into good ones. Here is an elementary lesson for you. What is a habit? A habit is something that you do over and over again. That was your lesson for the day. Turn the healthy part into something that you do over and over again.

• Oh Doctor, Doctor! Doctor’s visits are im-portant. Why? Because no matter how much we hate them they are a necessity. See our bodies can’t always tell us what’s going on, on the outside. Sometimes there are things we can’t see on the inside that are preventing us from reaching a healthier life. From thyroid problems to diabetes. Once you know what is going on you can take care of your inside. Along with your new routine your outside will be to perfection in no time. Some wom-

en work hard to reach their goals and see no results. They never go see a doc-tor and they don’t realize that a simple check up can lead to finding the main cause as to why after all of your hard work you are not successful. But once you do wait for it...wait for it...wait for it... YOU WILL SEE RESULTS! • Last but not least talk to yourself. Don’t answer yourself then that might be another problem that I honestly can’t solve. What I mean is be your own cheerleader. Only you can cheer yourself on in this journey. Note: As with any new

health regimen please consult your physician before com-mencing.

Name: Eliza Davis Company: Crème de la Curves

NOV 2011 PG58 SKORCHMAG.COM

Page 59: Nov Issue of SKORCH Magazine - Plus Size Fashion

Give us a quick breakdown and tell us a little about you. I started working in the industry almost five years ago, starting with cosmetology school and then concentrat-ing more on makeup artistry. In my time as a makeup artist, I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to travel all over the country working on projects in both TV & film. When working on magazine shoots, I began to dabble in styling, on a few projects which is where the seed to start Crème de la Curves was originally planted.

Tell us about Crème de la Curves. What is it & why did you start/create it?

Crème de la Curves is a curvy girls guide to luxury, life and style in their city. I created this because as a professional makeup artist, and plus size women who travels all over the country I love going boutique shopping when I’m in a new city. Seeking out those great little treasures that you’re not going to find in any mainstream shop. While its fun to just go exploring, it’s also great to have a guide and with style and culture different in various parts of the world. I believe that each city deserves to have its own spotlight shown on the curvy women of their community.

I noticed there is a Crème de le Curves Phoenix, is your goal to expand the brand across the US?

Yes, definitely. With Phoenix being the place I call home, I thought there is no better place to start than here. We have many boutiques, consignment shops, and designers that work with plus sizes. In addition, we will be hosting monthly events for the women to be able to get together and really enjoy an environment where the focus is taken away from it being a “plus size” but rather a themed evening where the women sizes 12-18 aren’t going to feel like they are either out of place, or that their sizes won’t be available.

How do you envision doing this?

While I am approaching this in a very fluidic way, my vi-sion is to create an environment where size is taken out of the equation while being offered at the same time. I know personally, I would find myself becoming frustrat-ed when attending events, or shopping at boutiques only to find that they didn’t carry my size. In addition, I hope to empower women, by letting them know that it’s ok to talk about their insecurities and know they are not alone, but also to celebrate the beautiful skin that they are in. In building a community in each city, I hope to create a foundation of beauty and confidence in the plus size community.

Who in the plus size industry inspires you?

I don’t think I could even begin to answer this, there are so many positive women doing so many positive

things for us. I adore the blogging community, I don’t even know if I can narrow down a definite favorite, although I absolutely adore “Blog to Be Alive”, her style is just incredible, but there are so many others that I love too.

Crème de le curves had their first event on Sept 8th for Fashion's Night Out, what made you want to do this?

As I mentioned above, in working in the industry for the past 5 years, I have attended many fashion events and parties as either a guest or working back stage. In Phoenix, there was nothing offered for the plus size community. So when I started planning the events for the first year, I knew that I wanted to start it off with a bang, and knew that pairing up with Fashion’s Night Out would be the way to do it.

For those of us that couldn't make it describe the event.

Looking back, the night of the 8th was a whirlwind. We had red carpet, and several vendors including Sil-pada, Maxima Rejuvenation, and Sonsi Stones. Giving the guests the opportunity to shop and mingle while enjoying a signature Crème Brulee from a local favor-ite, Torched Goodness (PHX) before the show. Collec-tions were shown from both local and national brands, including Kika Paprika, Deeds of Love, Strut, Torrid, and Lane Bryant. As the conclusion of the show, throughout the month of August we ran a makeover contest and revealed our recipients final look.

Do you feel it was a success?

All in all, I do feel like it was a success, of course there will always be things you want to tweak or improve on but at the end of the day the models had a ball, and guest left wanting more so that’s really all you can ask for.

What's next for Crème de la Curves? This month we are having a Halloween themed event, offering a location for women to grab their girlfriends and come get ready to go out on the town. We will be offering makeup application stations, and a place to change into their costumes. It will definitely be more low key, giving the women who are interested in being a member the ability to get to know one another and learn more about what Crème de la Curves is all about in a fun no pressure environment.

This week was an exceptionally good week full of REAllY cute bargins!! It's supposed to get alot cooler here so I created a Thrifting crtieria to follow: 1) Color (not a

fan of nudes, neutrals or black these days) 2) Warm 3) Shoulder pads 4) Vintage. Lucky for me the sweater I chose for this week has all of the above plus four GOLD buttons!!!! Thus making it a great addition to my ward-robe. Let's all give her a warm and cozy hand clap!! LOL As always check it out and let me know what you think!

kIAh AND ThE CITYEvery Fashionista knows Carrie Bradshaw from SATC. One of her most memo-rable outfits is this pink tank paired with a cream full tulle skirt.

My outfit today reminded me of that famous outfit.

I like to think of mine as the full-figured version. hee heeDon’t you just love the full skirt with hints of sheer lace and polka dots! I DIED!

With Love,kiah

Simple White DressThere’s nothing to say about this dress really, it’s just a super simple little thing that’s perfect for throw-ing on in a hurry. The boy did my hair, bless his patience and dexterity haha.

I’ve just moved in to my very own apartment, for most people this is probably something ordinary but for me, I could only ever dream of having my own place. Indian girl, live with your folks until you’re married, blah blah. That’s the usual story but work is paying off well and I decided to make the change. It’s crazy because setting up house is so time consuming (and expensive!) and I’m a bit of a perfectionist when

it comes to my style, be it clothes or interiors.

Anyway, I can’t wait to show you pics :D

Until then, I recently got to be a part of a super fun photo shoot with the fabulous Tina from Tinayums. Check out some of the pics on my blog www.weeshasworld.com.

Military ChicI recently ordered the Military Dress from Pinup Girl Clothing. I decided to go for a 2XL as the chart indicated this to be the best fit for my 48inch bust and hips. The chart was right! The dress fit snugly over my hips and fairly well over my bust. It could do with being a little larger and I may sew it up a tad but I am quite please with the overall fit. A belt was necessary just to sate my addiction :p

I teamed this dress with my Lupin Deco and no shapewear. As you can see bra shows a little bit, hence my need to sew the dress up. But this fit is spot on for accentuating my figure without being too obscene! I would wear this on dressy nights out and to fancy dress parties. I just love that it has longer sleeves as I am very self conscious about my wobbly upper arms and the darker colour on the bottom is flattering over my large bottom and hips.Pinup Girl – can you do no wrong?!

OOTD: ladies Who Lunch. How amazing has this weather been?! I think it’s been a little too warm actually. But I’m enjoying it so much that I really shouldn’t complain! But I wish the weather could just cruise along at a spring level all year round. Not too hot or too cold! I thought this was a perfect dress to have lunch with some girlfriends of mine! It was so lovely and cool to wear. You really do need to tie the waist tie really really tight, its the only way to get the bust sitting right.

I’m not honestly sure why I thought these bright berry pumps would look good with the blue, but I’m so glad I teamed them together! I love how the colour of the shoes pop against the pale blue. I think they actually make the blue seem brighter some how. Also who ever designed these shoes at Torrid, the men of the world owe you something - that’s for sure, because these shoes make a girls legs look amazing! Even though I’m wearing heels, I still didn’t feel too dressed up. I felt casual enough for a nice lunch.

OOTD>Did someone say glitter? The other night I had so much fun at the ninja betty andthe nunchix show. It was at a very fun club in West Hol-lywood called Club Eleven. As most of you all know, one of my favorite things in this world are glitter and sequins. It just so happens that it is also the nunchix favorite thing. So naturally, I was head to toe in sequins. I wore one of my favorite thrift shop items, a sequin blue ombre puff sleeve jacket. I LOVE this jacket. I was about 50 pounds heavier the last time I wore it, so it was a bit big and boxy but

like Gisela Ramirez says…Fuck Flattering. I also wore my sequin black top I purchased at an outdoor outlet in Eng-land, my torrid sequin mini and knee high boots (for comfort). This show was amazeballs and for those girls and boys that haven’t checked out the nunchix, you need to. Stop what you are doing and check them out.

Part 2: Love Your Body Weekend (longest but best day of my life!)

Friday 10/21/11 - 7:30pm

So after I left the Torrid HQ (with my smoking new red ponte knit blazer!) I lived through Friday night lA rush hour to get to my girl Nati’s house - she was playing hostess. Took off my since 5am make-up, reapplied and went smokey to vamp it up for my party night (makeup post coming up in part 5). Felt so good to have fresh makeup on!

I threw on my new gold

accessories from my friends at Fashion to Figure. I’ve been trying to find the perfect brace-let/necklace chunky gold combo foreverrrrrrr, and in my price range - you know, cheap - LOL - and when I spotted this pair at FTF, my world changed a bit. Honestly, perfection.

Then headed to the Culver City Lane Bry-ant for the Pre-Party bash. Walked in, headed straight for a cocktail and gabbed with all my girls. The night went so quick I didn’t even get to shop!! Blasphemy!

xoxo Jessica kane
