Title: “Facial Pain and Temporomandibular Problems”

Clinician: Donald R. Tanenbaum, D.D.S., M.P.H.

Synopsis:Facial pain and jaw related disorders are often confusing and difficult to accurately diagnose and treat. However, with the knowledge that other than teeth the most common reason for the onset and persistence of facial and jaw pain is muscle dysfunction, the task of making a differential diagnosis becomes that much easier. This seminar, therefore, will provide at-tendees with a full appreciation of how the face, jaw and neck muscles can produce myriad symptoms that are expressed routinely by patients who come to dental offices seeking relief. Focus will be placed on understanding the stages of muscle dysfunction, why the face, jaw and neck muscles get into trouble, and how proper treatment sequencing can lead to pre-dictable results.

In addition, the common diagnoses associated with pain and mechanical disruption in the temporomandibular joints will be reviewed using case specific presentations that begin with data collection and end with treatment selection and outcomes. By the end of the presenta-tion, participants will be equipped with information that will facilitate making a more ac-curate diagnosis beyond, “You have TMJ.” Topics to be covered include:

CRESO Corner: X-ray Unit Registration and Cone Beam C-TBy Martin Schnee

The process for register-ing a new dental office or renewing your current permit has changed as of September 30, 2013. The Office of Radiological Health and NYC Depart-ment of Consumer Affairs (DCA) no longer accept mail-in applications. You

in person with the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs. There are some kinks in the system as of this writing, which will hopefully be worked out. The web page is www.nyc.gov/healthpermits. Look for Radiological Equipment (x-rays) and follow the prompts for new permit or renew permit. You should familiarize yourself with the Prerequisites and Pro-cess steps prior to complet-ing your application. Make sure to get a PIN number if you don’t have one already and don’t lose it. All mailed DCA renewal applications will have a PIN number assigned to you. There ap-pears to be new information that the DCA is requesting such as a NYS Tax ID num-ber (your EIN number). I saw questions relating to home address and proof of residency and also proof of incorporation and LLC. You still will need proof of Disability Insurance and Worker’s Compensation. If the system is not working

for you, try calling (212) 487-4060 for assistance. You also have the option of going yourself to their

York City. This may be your best option for the next few months. If you plan to send the papers with a staff member, you will need to

him/her permission to act on your behalf. Please note that every new dental per-mit must have the dentist’s name on it even if the den-tist is not an owner. If that dentist leaves the practice then a new registration will be required. Many of you still think that your 5-year inspection will get you a renewed permit. These are two separate items! You must have a current permit, which is on a two-year cycle, before you get your inspection. You are still required to have a CRESO

a new permit. Please post your permits at the reception desk in your

Cone Beam CT unitsNYC is working toward passing rules to govern the safe use of these units. Stay tuned for a future article if and when this goes through.

“Esthetic Realities for Today and Tomorrow”

Under the best of circumstances, the transfer of information between the dentist and technician for the fabrication of res-torations is difficult and challenging. Our educated patients and the advancement of materials has created a need for us to skillfully move through the diagnostic process including biomechanics, function, periodontics and esthetics. This program will present a rational methodology to help reduce the frustrations often encountered with more complex restorative treatments including patients who have a high risk in function and esthetics. With the advent of newer technologies such as photography, video and CAD/CAM, our role as dentists in the communication process will be a value to the dental community. In the years to come, what will separate us more than ever will be our talent level and ability to master the diagnostic side of dentistry. For this reason, this lecture will focus on the “team concept” of restorative dentistry and the importance of risk based diagnosis.
