PIMLICO PRIMARYconfirms its doors will open in September 2013.Pimlico Academy is to expand to include its own primary schoolon-site. Future received initial approval from the Department forEducation in October 2011 to open ‘Pimlico Primary’ under theirFree Schools programme. Planning Permission was granted byWestminster Council; work on site will began in October 2012and the Primary will open its doors to Reception pupils nextSeptember.

Pimlico Primary will provide much needed places for 60 childrenaged 4 - 11, making the Academy South Westminster’s first all-through state school. Pupils at the non-denominational Primarywill be guaranteed a place at Pimlico Academy.

Caroline Nash, Chair of the Board of Governors, said, “We aredelighted that Westminster Council has granted permission forour Primary school. By opening Pimlico Primary we can make areal difference to the life chances of children in SouthWestminster.”Annaliese Briggs, Principal Designate of Pimlico Primary, com-mented, “This is excellent news for the many local families who

have been demanding increased provi-sion in high quality education. I will becontacting everyone who hasexpressed an interest in sending theirchild to Pimlico Primary and look for-ward to welcoming our new pupils inReception in September 2013.”Pupils will enjoy the newest facilities atPimlico Primary and will have accessto the many excellent facilities atPimlico Academy including an auditori-um, all weather sports pitch, library and

science labs. Jerry Collins, Principal of Pimlico Academy, said, “We are excit-ed about the prospect of Pimlico Academy becoming an all-through school, enabling us to provide an exceptionally highstandard of education from a child’s first day in Reception all theway through to 18. Pupils at the Primary will follow a coherentknowledge-led curriculum, facilitating a smooth progression fromyear to year. Through its focus on knowledge and sequentiallearning, they will have the strongest preparation for learning andachievement in the Secondary phase at Pimlico Academy.”

In these recessionary times many people are experiencing the effect of ever rising costs. One firm to benefit from this isUptown Reservations. For the past 24 years Uptown has been accommodating visitors to London in private homes in thecentral areas, roughly Zone 1 on the Underground system. It’s a good time to offer Bed and Breakfast accommodation.Besides tax advantages, the 2012 Olympics games will produce a huge surge in demand for accommodation in the centreof town. And it is to be hoped that the site will continue to attract visitor long after the games have finished.Recent additions to Uptown’s property portfolio have included an apartment in Warwick Square, Pimlico and Ebury Street;Smith Street, Chelsea. Do you have a spare room with bathroom, and enjoy meeting interesting people, then find out moreby calling Monica Barrington at Uptown Reservations on 020 7937 2001.

To the Editor and Staff of Pimlico & Belgravia Eye,

It has come to my attention that an article entitled Out and AboutFree Tickets Scheme has been published on page 4-5 of theOctober issue of the Pimlico and Belgravia Eye. The article consistsof sections taken from Westminster City Council’s Guide to the Outand About Free Ticket Scheme, and was published without permis-sion from the Council, or its Arts and Cultural Services.

I should be most grateful if you would let me know how you came toreceive this text: whether it was taken directly from our website, ors_ubmitted by a resident. If the latter, I should like to know who sentit, so I may advise them not to do so again. It may well have beenshared in good faith, but the text is the property of Westminster CityCouncil and copyright does apply.

Moreover, the Out and About free ticket scheme is a council servicewhich prioritises older residents who, without these free tickets, would not be able to attend any cultural event. For this reason, it ispromoted solely, and very successfully, through the appropriateCouncil departments and publications. The scheme is already over-subscribed.However, the document entitled Out and About Free Ticket Schemefrom which your article is taken, is not circulated. It is available onlyby link from the Arts and Culture’s section of the Council’s website. We may post copies directly to new members, without internetaccess, for personal use.

I therefore request that the article and information regarding the Outand About free ticket scheme, be removed from the current andforthcoming issues of Pimlico and Belgravia Eye and all future publi-cations.

Yours faithfully,

Philippa BakerArts Information OfficerWestminster City Council

ROYAL COURT THEATRE, SLOANE SQUARE.The theatre was originally designed by Walter Emden andopened in 1888. In 1932 it became a cinema. After beingbombed in the blitz, it reopened in 1952 with the auditoriumwhich became familiar to audiences and artists of the innovativeEnglish Stage Company. The quality of the auditorium and thefacade did, however, contrast with the remainder of the buildingwhich had little merit and had since 1954 had been altered inpiecemeal fashion.

By the early 1990s the theatre was on the brink of contraveninghealth and safety regulations, and in 1995 it was told that it wouldbe forced to close within 18 months. The drains still flooded thestalls and understage; the dressing rooms were in a sorry state;the office space had ceased to be functional. Audience facilitieswere unacceptable.

In 1995 a bid to the Arts Council of England for developmentfunds resulted in a £16.2 million award. Work began in March1996. Major features of thefacade and theintimate auditoriumhave been preserved. Thenew theatrehas improvedfacilities forperformers andtheatre-goers.The architectswere HaworthTompkins.

Existing base-ment levelshave beenexpanded, cir-culation ratio-nalised andnew partsadded, effec-tively doublingusable spaceand freeing upthe main auditorium and foyers. To the rear, a new nine-storeyannexe clad in red-painted steel, Cor-ten mesh and cedar plankscontains new office spaces and dressing rooms.

Additional front of house space has been created by tunnellingunder the road. The new undercroft extends the stalls bar under-neath Sloane Square and houses a restaurant and bookshop.

ST MICHAEL’S CHURCH, CHESTER SQUARE, BELGRAVIAMarriage Preparation Course. Local couple attributes happy relationship to church marriage course. You might say that Martinand Emma Jee were meant to be together. They went to the same university but didn’t make contact with each other on campus. It wasonly when they bumped into each other by sheer coincidence at workonce they had graduated that they went on their first date. Fast forward a few years and now the pair are happily married afterhaving their dream wedding. The secret to their happy union? Themarriage preparation course they embarked on before they tied theknot.Martin and Emma are one of many couples to benefit from theMarriage Preparation Course at St Michael’s Church in ChesterSquare. The course is designed to help couples who are engaged tobuild what will be a long lasting and fulfilling marriage. The course isrun by Charles and Tricia Marnham, who have been married forover 30 years.Martin and Emma Jee, got married in a small village church close tothe Oxfordshire farm where Emma grew up. Their relationship blossomed when they were working in Parliament for different MPs.A year later they were engaged. The vicar at the church where thepair married recommended a marriage course. The course covers various areas such as commitment, expressingfeelings, keeping love alive, resolving conflict and talking aboutgoals. Every evening there is a talk followed by an opportunity to discuss the topic together as a couple.

Emma said, “One thing I wasconcerned about is that Ithought we would all sit roundtogether and everyone wouldhear what everyone had tosay, but it’s not like that at all. It’s completely private. Whatyou say is completelybetween each other. So youcan be completely honest witheach other and don’t have toworry about other people lis-tening in.” “It’s not likeAlcoholics Anonymous,”Martin jested. While the course is based onChristian principles, it’s suit-

able for couples with or without a church background. You don’t evenneed to be getting married in a church to register for the course. Emma concluded, “It’s brilliant, I would recommend it to any couplebecause it gets you to talk about the things you should talk about asa couple. We tell all of our friends who are engaged to do the course. The ones that do it find it really useful and gain the benefit from it. Ithas definitely helped us and will continue to do so.”

ST BARNABAS, Founded by the Reverend William Bennett, at that time incum-bent of St Paul’s Knightsbridge, the church was consecrated onSt Barnabas’ Day 1850 amid considerable controversy caused byaccusations of ‘Popery in Pimlico’. Its style is Early EnglishGothic and the architect was Thomas Cundy. It was the first

church built inEngland where theideals and beliefs ofwhat came to beknown as Anglo-catholic movementwere embodied in itsarchitecture andliturgy. From thebeginning there hasbeen a strong musi-cal life here, wherethe compilers ofHymns Ancient &Modern held theirmeetings, and edi-tors planning TheEnglish Hymnalused to meet in theClergy House.

On entering thebuilding one seesthe impressiveShrine of StBarnabas, erectedas a memorial to theReverend G C

Rawlinson, a much loved curate who served here for nearly 20years.

From the Shrine of St Barnabas the eye is easily drawn to therichly carved screen, designed by Bodley in 1906; high above itstands the figure of Christ in Majesty on the cross, flanked by theArchangels Gabriel and Raphael.

Moving north-west from St Barnabas Shrine, into the towerspace, one is faced by an impressive Calvary (the Crucifixionscene) carved in Oberammergau in 1910.

In the left (west) wall from the Calvary is a window designed byKempe’s successor, Walter Tower, depicting Christ in the Gardenof Gethsemane. It is a memorial to his own wife, Mary Isabella, abenefactor of the Parish.

Along the south wall of the Nave, there are a further four win-dows depicting the patron saints of Westminster - St Edward the

Confessor, and of England - St George, St Osmond (or Osmund: theNorman Bishop who built the Cathedral at Old Sarum and formulatedSarum Rite) and St David - the patron of Wales.

On the north wall of the nave are four of a series of seven monu-ments in the form of mosaics. They are in the Ravenna style, com-posed not only of marble and stone but also of coloured and gildedglass; they are believed to be the work of an Italian family living inLondon in the late 19th century.

The first depicts the Last Supper, the second and third mosaics - ofthe Crucifixion and the post-Resurrection scene ‘feed my sheep’ - theare memorials to two former priests. The one depicting the post-Resurrection injunction of Jesus, ‘feed my sheep’, includes figures ofSt Paul and St Barnabas. The fourth, of the Ascension, looks downonto the altar of St John the Baptist, under the organ case.

This altar and reredos was formerly in the now demolished Chapel ofSt John the Baptist, Pimlico Road. The stone pulpit, to the right of StJohn’s altar, is thought to be by Butterfield in the Early English style. In five niches of its octagonal shape there are paintings by a localartist on metal panels of Christ and the Four Latin Doctors (StsGregory the Great, Ambrose, Augustine and Jerome). A contemporarycommentator described them as ‘unworthy, and they should (soon) bereplaced’. In the first week after the consecration of the church, ser-mons were preached from this pulpit by the great leaders of theOxford Movement: John Keble, J M Neale, E B Pusey, andArchdeacon (later Cardinal) Manning.

Directly opposite across the Nave is a brass lectern by Cundy; mod-eled on 16th century examples but with more developed decoration.

The Chancel is richly decorated with statuary and stencil-work. Thehigh altar is the primary focus of the church where the Eucharist iscelebrated each Sunday. It has a fine reredos by Bodley, the centralscenes of which are the Crucifixion and the Annunciation.

Flanking the altar on each side are statues of the four Evangelists.Arguably the finest feature of the church is the Lady Chapel, built byComper as a memorial to the third Vicar and noted patron of gothicrevival artists, the Revd Alfred Gurney.

The Parochial Church Council (PCC), is the executive body of StMatthew's, Westminster. It consists of the clergy and churchwar-dens, together with a number of representatives of the laity electedat the annual parochial church meeting. The PCC meets between 4and 6 times a year.

The aim of St Matthew’s is to be a witness to the Catholic faith within the Church of England, drawing people from a wide area tothe worship of God through Catholic teaching and practice, in partic-ular, through its threefold ministry of prayer, hospitality and dialogue.

Fr Philip Chester is the Vicar of St Matthew's and also the AreaDean for Westminster (St Margaret) Deanery.

Fr Peter Hanaway served in the RAF after which he joined thePrison Service. He was Governor of four prisons and finished histime at headquarters of HMPS here in Westminster. He wasordained priest in 2003.

ST MATTHEW’S WESTMINSTERis close to the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey andChurch House. The church was built in 1849 to the design of SirGeorge Gilbert Scott, greatly enriched by the addition of fittingsand glass by C F Bodley, C E Kemp, Martin Travers and others. The Lady Chapel is one of Sir Ninian Comper’s finest earlyworks.

The church was gutted by fire in 1977 and was reconstructed toa reduced plan and rededicated in 1984.

There is a small residential community in the parish, a finechurch primary school and a large working population - the new

building oppo-site the churchhouses theHome Officeand more people work inthat one build-ing than thenumber oflocal residentsin the wholeparish.

There areservices everymorning, lunchtime andevening and

the church is open all day for quiet and reflection by local work-ers, residents and visitors. St Matthew’s is a place of peace andquiet in the heart of the rush of Westminster life.

St Matthew’s has close links with their primary school with aservice held in the school every week. There is a Servers’ Clubfor children of the school, and a programme of Admission toCommunion. The church works with the elderly, lonely, house-bound or sick in the area.

For hundreds of years since the 11th century, the area aroundwhere St Matthew’s Church stands was dominated byWestminster Abbey. In 1681, Henry Purcell was living with hisfamily in Great St Anne’s Street, while he was organist at theAbbey.

By 1711, the population of St Margaret's parish had grown to20,000 and so the Church Building Commissioners consideredthat another church should be built in the parish. This churchwas publicly funded and the land was bought from Henry Smithwho was also the Commissioners' treasurer! The church dedi-cated to St John the Evangelist was built in what is now knownas Smith Square

WESTMINSTER CITY HALL, 64 VICTORIA STREET.1966 office block - access by lift to the Lord Mayor's Plate Room, featuring mayoral artefacts, civic plate and gifts to the City, withassociated works of art. Access also to the mayoral suite at thetop of City Hall for excellent views across central London.

Westminster City Hall and Kingsgate Parade was conceived inconjunction with themuch larger StagPlace developmentto its west. Thedevelopment was aspeculative officeblock that gained itscivic status afterplanning approvalhad already beengranted. The City ofWestminster wascreated in 1965 aspart of the establish-ment of the GreaterLondon Council, fiveyears after construc-tion began at thesite, and simplybought the officeblock as its home.

This explains thelack of ‘civic expres-sion’ in the plaindesign of the build-ing; details wereamended so that atground level one is

provided with some municipal regalia in the form of a coat ofarms and chandeliers in a marble clad lobby. Westminster CityCouncil supported later commercial redevelopment of the street.

The Lord Mayor of Westminster's Plate Roomis home to the City Council's "Civic Plate". The name derivesfrom a time when silver salvers and dishes would have symbol-ised the history and wealth of the City. It includes silver, gold andother precious items that have been presented to WestminsterCity Council and its predecessor bodies over many years.

On display are the civic insignia including the three boroughmaces representing the authority of the Monarch, as well as anumber of gifts from foreign Heads of State, Mayors and otherdignitaries on visits to the City - together with other memorabilia.Past Lord Mayors generally make a gift to the City on retirementfrom office.

Much of the Civic Plate has been inherited by the City ofWestminster's predeceasing authorities including the Court ofBurgesses of Westminster Abbey and the boroughs of St

Marylebone and Paddington.

Items include the Great Mace, the Mayor's Chain and Badge ofOffice, the Codrington Dish, Pickering Loving Cup, the JesselLoving Cup, the Probyn Loving Cup, the Crystal Goblet, thePocket Staff, the High Constable's Staff, the Lee Snuff Box, theSt Martin's Snuff Box and the Westminster Tobacco Box.
