Speaker: Aileen Horn, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Aileen has practiced architecture for close to 30 years. Most recently she has focused on hotels, multifamily, and mixed use projects on unique sites: urban infill, historic adaptive re‐use, and previously developed properties. She is a strong advocate for sustainable hotel design and has been a LEED® Accredited Professional since 2007. Aileen was instrumental in the LEED Gold certification of the Fairfield Inn and Suites Baltimore Inner Harbor – the first for the Fairfield Inn brand. It was the first hotel in Baltimore to achieve the certification and the winner of several awards. A hotel can be an excellent edu‐cational vehicle for demonstrating sustainable building and maintenance practices.
Aileen has participated in the entitlement process for several suc‐cessful hotels in a number of local jurisdictions and institutions. She believes all stakeholders benefit when a hotel is well integrated into the community and local culture.
“I believe a hotel plays a uniquely pivotal role in its community. Every day it creates a community for its guests – making everyone feel at home no matter how transient. The hotel is a portal through which its guests are introduced to, and participate in, both the local and greater

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Jesse Oak, NOVA CSI President Dear CSI Members,
So this month, to see if anyone really reads the newsletter, I thought I would give a short history of the second and shortest month of the year with the help of Wikipedia.
February is the third month of meteorological winter in the Northern Hemisphere so spring will be here before you know it unless you get stuck reliving Groundhog Day on Thursday the 2nd. The name comes from the Latin term februum, which means purifica‐tion from the Roman purification ritual held on the 15th. January and February were the last two months to be added to the Roman calendar since the Roman’s considered winter a monthless period which is interesting. Luckily we did not use the Old English terms Solmonath (mud month) and Kale‐monath (named for cabbage) for February. Not good names for the month that gives us Valentine’s Day also called Saint Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, and Leap Year unless we are reliving the Lord of the Rings.
With that I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe Groundhog and Valentine’s Day. Remember Valentine's Day is not just for couples, it is also a great day to tell your family and friends how much you love and treasure them.
And as I like to say, CSI is one of the only professional groups to bring together all of the various groups involved with the constructed environment from the owner, the contrac‐tor, material manufacturer, and supplier and designer, CSI provides a great forum to share information, network and collaborate. Think again on why you joined CSI originally, what you have learned from the organization and think about how you can share this with oth‐ers in the construction field to strengthen this collaboration and improve the industry. So invite a friend or colleague you can introduce and bring into the CSI family.
Stay safe and hope to see you soon.
