Bargholz, DouglasDouglas Joseph Bargholz enlist-ed with the Royal Canadian Air Force July 19, 1941 in Calgary. He served in Britain as an aero engine mechanic, Class A, with the ground crew of the 497 Can-adian (Demon) Squadron of the Coastal and later Bomber Com-mand.

Blystone, Donald, Mary and RaymondDonald, Mary and Ray Blystone all served in World War II between 1939 and 1945. Mary Blystone (nee Walsh) was in the Royal Can-adian Air Force while Don and Ray were in the army. Don served in Holland and Germany while Ray served in Italy.

Clark, MavisMavis Clark was a radar oper-ator in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force from 1942 to 1945.

Coates, MaryMary Coates was in the signal corps in the British army for two years from 1943 to 1945. She was stationed in Inverness, Scotland.

Danyluk, MichaelMichael Danyluk served in the 10th Dragoons in 1942 when he was 18 years old. He served in Italy, the Netherlands and Bel-gium. He was in the army more than four years.

Doherty, FlorenceFlorence Doherty, sister of Summerland orchardist James Doherty, served in the military police from 1942 to 1945.

Lipscombe, DudleyDudley Arthur Lipscombe served in World War II in the British army. He was part of the Dur-ham Light Infantry and served in Europe and north Africa. His rank was sergeant.

Guachie, ReneRene Gauchie joined the Canadian army in Edmonton at 16 years old and served in World War I and World War II. He served as a quarter-master sergeant.

Hodgson, JosephJoseph Hodgson was in the 17th Light Anti Aircraft Battery in the Canadian army in Edmonton. He served in the United King-dom and continental Europe. He served from 1940 to 1945.

Clements, DickDick Clements joined the Royal Navy in September, 1944 and served until May, 1947 as a lead-ing stores assistant.

Coates, MaryMary Coates was in the signal corps in the British army for two years from 1943 to 1945. She was stationed in Inverness, Scotland.

Parker, LawrenceLawrence (Larry) Parker enlisted Sept. 20, 1940 and was part of the Edmonton Fusiliers. He served in the United Kingdom, central Mediterranean and Eur-ope. He was discharged Dec. 6, 1945. He lived in Summerland from 1989 until his death in 2003.

Mayne, Edith MayEdith May Mayne served with the Wrens in Halifax and Washington D.C. with the Canadian Joint Mission.

Mayne, James GordonJames Gordon Mayne served with the RCAF in Canada and in Britain with the RAF.

Huston, DonDon Huston served with the Royal Canadian Armed Forces during World War II.

Ireland, PaulinePauline Ireland served with the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II.

Johnson, HarryHarry Johnson served with the 8th Parachute Battalion with the British Army from 1945 to 1948. He served in Palestine.

Harris, C. HerbertC. Herbert Harris was wounded at Vimy during World War I. He was the uncle of the six Harris brothers.

Harris, Gavin R.Gavin R.Harris served with the RCAF from 1953 to 1954.

Harris, Kenneth A.Kenneth A.Harris served with the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II.

Harris, W. DerwynW. Derwyn (Doug) Harris enlisted in the RCAF in 1952. He served more than 27 years.

Miller, EdsonEdson Miller served with the 89th O. Battalion C.E.F.

Jarvis, TerranceTerrance Jarvis was an RCAF Spitfire pilot in World War II. He was killed in action on July 31, 1944 over the Domfret area of France.

Phillips, DoiranDoiran Phillips was a private in G (intelligence) in the Salisbury Plain District, Bulford, Salisbury, England from 1943 to 1944.

Quarton, HarryLt.-Col. Harry Quarton joined the South Alberta Regiment in June, 1940, when he was 17. He landed on Juno Beach as part of the 4th Canadian Armoured Division and participated in the Battle of the Falaise Gap. In 1946, he enlisted with the 19th Alberta Dragoons and was commissioned as an offi-cer in 1952. He retired in 1986. In recent years, he and other vet-erans have returned to various European sites.

Hughes, A. HiltonA. Hilton Hughes served with the 12th Manitoba Dragoons.

Kilburn, JerryJerry Kilburn served with the Royal Canadian Air Force as a pilot from 1941 to 1944. He served in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Charlie, WilliamWilliam Charlie served in Britain, the central Mediterranean and Europe during World War II. He was discharged Feb. 22, 1946.

Pugh, Iorylorwerth Llyllwlyn Pugh served with the Lord Strathcona’s Horse Royal Canadians from 1942 to 1946.

Finnis, MichaelMichael Finnis served with the First Indian Field Regiment, Indian Artillery.

Odegaard, Norah and HansNorah Odegaard was with the Air Force as post mistress stationed in Calgary from 1942 until 1945. Hans Odegaard was with the Army as a mechanic from January 1942 to January 1946. He was overseas from August 1943 until December 1945. They were married Aug. 15, 1943, five days before he was sent overseas. He returned two years later.

Smith, Alex J.Alex J. (Sandy) Smith was a navigator/observer in the 604 Pathfinder Squadron with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He died March 12, 1943.

Smith, Edward F.Cpl. Edward F. Smith served in the Royal Canadian Air Force with motor transport.

Smith, Gordon D.Gordon D. Smith served with the Royal Canadian Air Force as an instrument technician with the 433 Squadron.

Blagborne, BruceBruce Blagborne was a sergeant in training at Officer’s Cadet Training Unit, Royal Military Col-lege, Sandhurst. He graduated as a lieutenant in the Parachute Branch.

Hansen, Robert G.Robert G. Hansen, LdSH (RC), served with the first UNEF Egypt, 1956 to 1957.

Joyce, K.I.K.I. Joyce (now Norris) served served with the Canadian Women’s Army Corps when she was 18. She took her basic train-ing in Kitchener, Ont.

Norris, R.E.R.E. Norris served with RCNVR in combined operations when he was 17. He was involved in the invasion on Juno Beach, Nor-mandy, France in 1944.

Waite, DeborahDeborah (Harris) Waite, daugh-ter of Doug and Lenore Harris, served with the RCAF from 1975 to 1982.

Downing, JoanJoan Downing (nee Nisbet) served with the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1942 to 1945.

Harris, H. E.; Harris, R. M.; Harris, A. L.Herbert E. Harris, R. Murray Harris and Arthur L. Harris all served with the RCAF  during World War II.

McIntosh, DavidDavid McIntosh, at right, joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in June, 1942 and undertook training for radar technicians in Clinton, Ont. He received further training at the U.S, Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi, Texas. After an aborted plane trip over the South Atlantic from Bahamas to Ghana, he was posted to a Royal Air Force transport squadron in Britain. He served there through the D-Day activities and the Aachen air drop. Two new RCAF transport squadrons, No. 435 and 436. were formed in 1944 to drop air supplies to the 14th Army in Burma. He was posted to the 436 Squadron and served in Imphal, India and Akyab and Ramree Islands off the coast of Burma. He returned to Canada on the M.V. Mauretania Jan. 1, 1946.

Agur, RobinRobert Jasper “Robin” Agur joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, 228 Squadron in 1940 as a wireless air gunner. He was killed in action on June 13, 1943. He is buried at the Runnymede Memorial in Surrey, United King-dom.

Gillingham, JackJack Gillingham served with the corvette HMCS Cobourg on convoy duty from Newfoundland to Londonderry, Ireland during World War II.

Gillingham, Charles V.Charles V. Gillingham enlisted with the Canadian army in 1943. He was killed in action in France in 1944 at the age of 24.

but must pick up tickets in advance.

After the Parade all Legion Members, Veterans and their spouses, Ladies Auxiliary and Summerland Pipe Band on parade are invited to the Legion.

All members of Cadets, the Scouting movement, and SSS Band are invited to the Legion for refreshments and a luncheon.

Donations for the Food Bank Christmas Hampers will kindly be accepted at the Legion up until Dec. 15th.

If you require further information, desire a ride to the service or wish to place a wreath, please contact the Branch at 250-494-2301.

REMEMBRANCE DAY 2013

Summerland Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is again soliciting donations and public support for its Annual Poppy Drive and Remembrance Day Ceremonies. The public is encouraged to attend the ceremonies at the Cenotaph.

Smith, PhillipPhillip M. Smith, Pte. K50975, joined the Canadian army in April, 1943 and was discharged in Feb-ruary, 1946. He was a volunteer in chemical warfare experiments in Suffield, Alberta in July, 1943.

Smith, Gordon W.Gordon W. Smith served with R.A.F. Squadron 608 as a flight mechanic in North Africa and Sicily from 1941 to 1946.

Young, ZoeZoe Young (nee Shaw) served in the British army with the Aux-iliary Territorial Services Claims Commission from 1942 to 1945. She married Douglas Young in England in July, 1945.

Welsh, Maurice F.Maurice F. Welsh joined the Reserve Officer Training Corps in 1941 as a 2nd Lieutenant while completing his Ph.D. at U. of Toronto in Plant Pathology. On graduation in 1942, he was pro-moted to 1st Lieutenant, Royal Canadian Signals Corp., and shipped to England. He served with Signals Corps attached to 1st Canadian Infantry Division in the Italian campaign. From Sicily and then throughout mainland Italy he served as a Signals Offi-cer, establishing communica-tions networks. He was demobil-ized in 1946 after further service in England.

Sanborn, Dewey LeeDewey Lee Sanborn served in World War I. He was the presi-dent of the Legion when this pic-ture was taken in 1917 or 1918.

Turnbull, DonDon Turnbull was in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1940 to 1944. He became a pilot and then trained others to fly. He lived in Summerland from 1952 until his death in 2004.

Topham, CharlesCharles Topham served with the B.C. Dragoons during World War II.

Stein, GordonGordon Stanley Stein had the rank of A.B. Seaman from May 1943 to November 1945. He served on the HMCS Longuel.
