Denton residents can joinwine lovers all over theworld in tasting the lat-
est Beaujolais Nouveau, a lightred wine flown in from Franceto celebrations on the thirdThursday in November. Den-ton’s Beaujolais and More —billed as the biggest party intown — raises funds for theCampus Theatre.
Unlike wines that improvewith age, Beaujolais Nouveauhas a short shelf-life and ismeant to be consumed imme-diately. The vintages vary fromyear to year, and better vintagescan last well into the next, butthose who wait to consume theBeaujolais would then miss allthe hype.
Sandra Robinson, commit-tee chairwoman for this year’sevent, said Metzler’s and Vignewill furnish the Beaujolais inaddition to other wines.Twenty-two area restaurantswill be providing light fare forthe event, which raises thou-sands of dollars to help providethe upkeep and maintenancefor the Campus Theatrethroughout the year.
Attendees will have theopportunity to purchase ticketsfor prize drawings. Some of theitems donated to the causeinclude a wine refrigerator, twowine baskets, a wine backpackwith accessories, Music Thea-tre of Denton season tickets,Denton Community Theatreseason tickets, a gift certificatefrom Cellar 22 and a pair ofDallas Stars hockey tickets.
“Being the only fundraiser
for the Campus, it’s a veryimportant event,” Robinsonsaid. For instance, in the pastyear, the building has accumu-lated a lot of expenses relatedto the air-conditioning andheating system, she said.
She added that funds raisedthrough Beaujolais and Morewill not go toward the DentonCommunity Theatre’s newblack box theater, whose fund-raising efforts are separatefrom that of the CampusTheatre.
“Everyone will have a goodtime,” said Robinson, whoexpects at least 300 people toattend. With Beaujolais andMore now in its 13th year, “It’sbecome a much anticipatedevent in Denton,” she said.

Things get fanciful thismonth at Oxide Gallery, with a November exhibit
that urges artists to let theirimaginations run wild.
The fall show capitalizes onfuturistic perspectives, withplenty of room for fantasy.
Photographer Dan Flakeweighs jagged scarlet linesagainst a field of white in XTPrech, a photograph that sug-gests either ripples on water ora crocodile grin.
Painter Carole Tumwa usesfolksy lines and bright acrylics
to dream up — what is it? Arooster? No, it’s a strangehybrid of rooster and insect inTerritorial. The curious animal(or alien?) fights off a horde ofbright blue Venus flytraps.
Gallery hours are 9 to 5 p.m.Monday through Friday and 9
a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday throughDec. 3. Admission is free. Thegallery is located insideLinwood-Alford Florist at 501W. Hickory St. For more infor-mation, visit www.oxidegallery.com.

Territorial, an acrylic painting by artist Carole
Tumwa, looks like a sweet, folksy take on barnyard
antics. Look closer, though, and this is no simple
bird of paradise. It’s an insect-like creature fighting
off a small group of bright blue Venus flytraps. In his altered photograph, artist Dan Flake sees a future — or a fan-
tasy — that is open to suggestion.

When the Black Swansreleased their Words AreStupid album, it was publi-cized as “a conceptual pieceabout the fallibility of lan-guage.”
Friday night at Hailey’sClub, listeners have thechance to explore the melan-choly world that fills theirwork.
The Black Swans’ musicflows so effortlessly andsteadily that the Ohio Riverwould be jealous.
Each song is a force ofnature in itself, exploring thedepths of human emotion. The gentle sounds of their
tunes shouldn’t be confusedfor a soft message.
From love and loss to liter-ature and language, there’slittle they won’t exploreusing a rich tenor andsmooth instrumentation.

When Jacob Smith adoptedhis pseudonym, the WhiteBuffalo, he wasn’t aware of theBrule Sioux legend.
“My given name is JacobSmith, which isn’t terribly mys-tical, so some friends thought Imight need a stage name orsomething, so they all threwnames in a hat and the WhiteBuffalo was in there,” he said. “Ijust kind of took it on.”
The tribe’s myth goes that awoman dressed in white buck-skin floated up to two huntersas they looked for food in agame-starved country.
When one man tried to touchthe holy woman inappropriate-ly, he was destroyed. The other
she told to return to camp andmake ready for her arrival.
Denton should make readyfor Smith’s show at the HydrantCafe on Tuesday. In a rich, deepbaritone akin to Eddie Ved-der’s, the modern WhiteBuffalo tells stories that roamlistlessly across the plains of thehuman experience.
Smith didn’t know about themagic of the legendary whitebuffalo, but the legend and themusician are compatible. TheBrule Sioux legend holds thatafter teaching the people cer-tain religious rites, the womanin the white buckskin left thecamp. On the way out, shestopped and rolled over fourtimes.
The first time, she turnedinto a black buffalo. The second
time, a brown buffalo. Thethird time, she was a red buffa-lo, and with her final roll, shebecame a white female buffalocalf. Then she vanished andherds of buffalo appeared, andthe people never wanted forfood.
Like the woman of the leg-end, Smith’s songs seamlesslymove between forms.
From murder and heart-break to love and joy, the WhiteBuffalo’s songs conjure up uni-versal themes. He said the sto-ries he lays over the chords ofhis guitar come from the openfields of his imagination.
“I don’t really draw fromstuff,” Smith said. “Nothingreally inspires; it’s just my ownimagination.”
And like the Brule Sioux holywoman, the ends of Smith’stunes leave a sense of musicalbounty in the listener. Even thesaddest songs are desperatelybeautiful.

OPENING FRIDAYAround a Small Mountain(1/2) Former New Waver and
French icon Jacques Rivette direct-
ed this oblique tale of a mysterious
Italian man who befriends the
members of a small traveling cir-
cus in southern France. He invei-
gles himself into the group before
eventually exposing some long-
held secrets among the members.
Rivette delivers his standard long
takes and measured pace to paint
his interwoven portrait. Not rated,
84 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas.

Cool It (1/2) Mildly thought-pro-
voking documentary that follows
Bjorn Lomborg, a Danish author
whose book The Skeptical
Environmentalist gives an alterna-
tive view of the climate change
issue, that global warming is a reali-
ty but is too high on our list of prior-
ities when education and humani-
tarian issues should take prece-
dence. Lomborg offers some intrigu-
ing viewpoints, especially on knee-
jerk politicians from both sides, but
the film too often seems like a self-
promotional tool. Rated PG, 88 min-
utes. At the Magnolia. — Todd
Jorgenson
Last Train Home (1/2) This fas-
cinating documentary focuses in
general on China's 130 million
migrant workers who flood trains
when returning to their rural homes
once a year on the Chinese New Year.
In particular, director Lixin Fan exam-
ines the depressing life of a couple
who had come to work in a big city
factory, leaving their now estranged
children to be raised by a grand-
mother. Not rated, 85 minutes. At the
Angelika Dallas. — B.A.
127 Hours (1/2) Oscar-winning
director Danny Boyle (Slumdog
Millionaire) again shows his versatili-
ty with this harrowing true-life
adventure tale about Aron Ralston
(James Franco), a hiker who slipped
in a narrow Utah canyon, becoming
immobile when his arm was wedged
between rocks. As his provisions run
low and survival hopes turn slim, he
becomes desperate. Franco is terrific,
while Boyle manages to bring sus-
pense and high drama to a story with
only one human character. Rated R,
93 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas.

‘Glory’ all her own McAdams carriesold story with herfresh performance
By Boo Allen Film Critic
Morning Glory breathesnew life into an oldconvention by telling
the story of someone whobreathes new life into an oldconvention. It also helps that theone doing most of this breathingis a likable, talented actor acute-ly fitted to her role.
Roger Michell (Notting Hill,Venus) again exhibits his talentfor squeezing the most out ofroutine material, here thescript by Aline Brosh McKenna(The Devil Wears Prada). Thestory of combative televisionco-anchors could qualify forMedicare, and the basic narra-tive about a struggle to raiseratings is not exactly highdrama.
But Michell also elevates hismaterial by reinforcing his
knack for somehow persuadinghis on-screen talent into lookingbad, because at some point inMorning Glory, everyone takesa fall or two. Rachel McAdamsqualifies as the pratfall standout, grabbing the spotlight awayfrom high-profile co-stars DianeKeaton and Harrison Ford.
McAdams plays Becky, ahard-working morning showproducer who lands in NewYork at a last-place networkwith a morning show barelyregistering a pulse. She quicklyfires one smarmy host and then
elevates the pompous DanRather-like news icon MikePomeroy (Ford) to reluctantco-host.
But, partly because of hislucrative contract, Pomeroymerely sits there scowling, refusing (to his credit) to playalong with the endless inanefluff that makes up morningtelevision. Of course, this makeseveryone on the morning “team”hate him, including his narcis-sistic co-host Colleen (Keaton).
Becky decides to go rogueand takes the show into audi-ence-share-grabbing morningcraziness, with weathermanErnie (Matt Malloy) deliveringa series of hilarious on-the-street sequences. Her and hercrew’s jobs look saved, butPomeroy stands aloof.
At that point, Morning Glorydevolves into Becky wheedling,
cajoling and whining, all whilein the middle of the hurricanethat makes up her life. Shereceives painful signals thatwarn her of the perils of livingsuch a life — she might end uplonely, jaded and bitter, likeMike Pomeroy.
In all, the transparent storyserves as springboard for clum-sy messages and a largeamount of obvious humor, using Pomeroy’s cantankerous-ness for material. But the storyalso allows McAdams to turn ina spirited screwball comedyperformance reminiscent ofthe best of Carole Lombard, or,later, a young Diane Keaton.
Beneath the fluff of a storyabout other fluffiness, Mc-Adams’ smart turn glimmers.

During the night, a cluster of strange,
mesmerizing lights signals the arrival

Unstoppable () Forget that it’s
supposedly based on a true story and
ignore the logical side of your brain,
and there’s some fun to be had in
this high-octane thriller about a loco-
motive engineer (Denzel
Washington) and a young trainee
(Chris Pine) forced to put aside their
differences to stop an unmanned,
out-of-control freight train. Veteran
director Tony Scott knows his way
around an action film, and he wisely
keeps the adrenaline pumping while
Washington makes the most of a thin

gant but narratively flat 3-D animat-

cure supervillain (voiced by Will
Ferrell) whose attempts at world
domination are always thwarted by a
caped rival (Brad Pitt). Once a new
villain arrives on the scene,
Megamind realizes his powers might
be better used for good. There are
some amusing sight gags and one-
liners, but the predictable story pales
in comparison to Despicable Me, for
example. Rated PG, 95 minutes. —

Not quite ready for summerto be over? Go ahead, be abeach bum for a night. Grabyour towel and head for theCenter for the Visual Arts, which will be transformed thisSaturday into a ’50s- and ’60s-era beach scene — completewith grass-hut snack shacks, surfboards and sand castle
table centerpieces. The occasion? The Arts
Guild’s annual fundraiser. Thisyear, the theme is “Hang Ten in2010.”
The Arts Guild — or TAG, as
it’s commonly called — is “themoney-making arm of theGreater Denton Arts Council,”said Sandra Robinson, theguild’s president.
“Money raised at our Annual
Auction for the Arts goes tolocal nonprofit arts groups fora wide variety of arts pro-grams,” she said.
The benefit event relies on alarge group of volunteers andcontributions from local busi-nesses and area residents.
“Without them, this auctionwould not be possible,”Robinson said.
Guild President-elect RitaBurleson is in charge of deco-rating — a big responsibilityshe called “the linchpin,”because it telegraphs thefundraiser’s theme to the com-munity with the intent to draw
people to the event. Burleson said executing the
surfing theme has been “a lot offun” but also a challengebecause many of the beachprops easiest to obtain were inthe Hawaiian style. But thatwasn’t what the steering com-mittee was after.
“We wanted more of theCalifornia, Huntington Beach,Surf City USA kind of look, sothat’s what we’re creating,” shesaid, “like Frankie and Annetteand Beach Blanket Bingo.”
“I really focused on surfboards,” Burleson said. Therewill be plenty of them scattered

Not only will there be plentyto bid on, there will also beplenty to eat. Numerous arearestaurants are providing goodeats for the occasion. It’s “kindof like a food fair. You wanderaround and get what youwant,” Burleson said.
Beyond the festivities, theevening has long-lasting value.
“Last year’s auction netted$45,000 for grants,” saidMargaret Edge Chalfant, exec-utive director of the GreaterDenton Arts Council.
“Our specific grants go toour member organizations, and many of them go for gen-
eral, operational funding for aseason,” she said. Some of thegroups that received grants forseasonal support include theDenton Bach Society, theDenton Bell Band, DentonCommunity Band, DentonCommunity Chorus, DentonCommunity Theatre, MusicTheatre of Denton and theVisual Arts Society of Texas.
Other grants go for specificprojects, Chalfant said. Forexample, the Denton BlackChamber of Commerce re-ceived grant assistance for theDenton Blues Festival, theDenton Festival FoundationInc. received a grant for theDenton Arts & Jazz Festival, and Texas Filmmakers re-ceived funds to help producethe Thin Line Film Festival.
“There’s a trickle-down fromthe grants,” Burleson said. “It’snot only funding arts grants tofurther the arts programs inthis community, it is also grow-ing the arts throughout thecommunity” through exposure, she said. “That’s what’s excitingabout the arts in Denton.”

Denton hip-hop fans willget a rare treat asMinneapol is-based
artist Lazerbeak brings hisbeats to Hailey’s Club.
The club’s walls will trembleunder the power of theDoomtree Records producer’smixes on Wednesday asLazerbeak pushes the tracks ofhis Legend Recognize Legendalbum.
Lazerbeak, also known asAaron Mader, proves himselfadept at working his mixer. Each track proves differentfrom the rest, and therein liesLazerbeak’s ability — diversitythat keeps the album from ever
getting stale. His diverse talents come
through. Mader is also thefrontman for the PlasticConstellations and he managesto use his vocal range expertly, moving from straight-up hip-hop to more melodic sounds, and back again seamlessly.
