The city of Boyd plans to spendup to $15,000 to more than dou-ble the amount of water storageat the elevated storage tank onKnox Avenue.
This will give us more capacityand more water pressure, saidcouncilman Harry Towler.
City administrator John Hamil-
ton said the upgrade to the tanksoverflow system will increase thetanks capacity from 55,000 gal-lons to 125,000 gallons.
The city will also have to even-tually spend as much as $18,000to clear up a bloom of golden al-gae in the aquifer at the locationof one of the citys wells.
Public works director Charles
Haynes said its not danger-ous to public health, but if itsnot removed it can cause dam-age to the well and clog up the
screens. It will continue to grow and
spread like a disease, Haynessaid.
He held a small vial of un-treated water from the well. Lit-tle flecks of golden-brown algaefloated like particles in a snowglobe in the otherwise crystal-clear vial of groundwater.
Consumers of city water willnot see the algae because it willbe treated with chlorine before itenters the system. Haynes said itis unknown how the algal bloomoccurred. The city had a similarbloom occur at another city wellabout a year ago.
In other water news, the newwater tower on Farm Road 730
is scheduled to be painted Nov.18. It is expected to be online byChristmas, Hamilton said.
The city is also continuing tolook for funds to help replace a
70-year-old clay sewer main. Theproject could cost as much as$500,000 Hamilton said.
In other city news, the councilgave approval to the Boyd Ma-sonic lodge to erect city pridesigns on the state highway right-of-ways entering the city. The
project will be at no cost to thetown.
And the public library receivedmore than $4,000 from the LoneStar Library grant program.

YOUR LIFEIN FOCUSEthel Martinez sent in
pictures of her home inBoyd. Her father, J.T. Bolin, purchased it in 1962.
She grew up in the house
and stayed after her return tocare for her aging father.
Paperwork on the houseindicates it was built in 1884,and though the family hastried to update and modernizethe kitchen, most of the homehas stayed the same.
Sometimes the repairs
overwhelm me. Sometimes I
want to tear it down and havea more modern house. But
my husband tells me I would
never be happy in another
house because this is home,
Martinez said.
Im just happy knowing
that I live in one of the oldest
houses in Boyd and am proud
of it.!
