Make your mark.Saturday, November 15, 2014

Voting is a fundamental Canadian right.

This November, municipalities across British Columbia will be holding a civic election. In Richmond, voters will be electing the next City leaders: a Mayor and eight Councillors for City Council and seven School Trustees for the Richmond Board of Education.

Being a voter will:

give you a chance to think about what issues are important to you, what you believe in and what you stand up for.

give you an opportunity to have a say in how things are run in Richmond.

To be eligible to vote, you must meet all of the following criteria at the time of voting and swear or affirm a solemn declaration attesting that:

You are a Canadian citizen.

You are, or will be, 18 years of age or older on General Voting Day, Saturday, November 15, 2014.

You have been a resident of British Columbia for at least the last six months.

You have been a resident of Richmond for at least the last 30 days.

Every effort is made to ensure that all voting places are accessible. Voters who have a physical disability, illness or injury that affects their ability to vote in person may request to:

use a mail ballot.

use curb-side voting which is a service whereby an elector may vote in their car with the assistance of an Election Official, provided the elector is able to drive to or be driven to a voting place.

have the assistance of another person to read or mark a ballot in the voting booth.

If you require translation assistance at the voting place, you may bring one person with you in the voting booth.

This election, we have an app for that. The free Richmond Election mobile app is available on iPhone and Android smart phones.

The app provides an easy and accessible resource for voters on-the-go to find out more about the election including voting day information, candidate profiles and on November 15, election results. Make sure to download the app if you haven’t already.

If you didn’t get a chance to vote in advance, you can vote on General Voting Day, Saturday, November 15, 2014. All voting places will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

All qualified voters must vote at their designated voting place. If you are a registered voter, you should have received a voter card package in the mail, which specifies your designated voting place. We recommend that you bring your voter card with you to the voting place so that we may assist you as efficiently as possible.

If you are a qualified voter who did not receive a voter card in the mail, use the Where do I vote? search tool at www.richmond.ca/electionservices or in the Richmond Election mobile app to determine your designated voting place.

I am a Canadian, free to speak without fear, free to worship in my own way, free to stand for what I think right, free to oppose what I believe wrong, or free to choose those who shall govern my country. – John G. Diefenbaker, 13th Prime Minister of Canada

Municipalities are the very atoms of our democracy.– Rex Murphy, Social Commentator and Editorialist

You are not disqualified from voting by the Local Government Act or any other enactment, or not otherwise disqualified by law.

If you are already on the Voters List, you should have received a voter card package to bring to the voting place. If you still need to register, you just need to bring the appropriate identification documents to register when it’s time for you to vote.

At the voting place, each voter must produce two identification (ID) documents that provide evidence of the voter’s identity and place of residence. At least one of the identification documents must include the voter’s signature.
