The book will be located near the bap smal font. THANKSGIVING MASS will be at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 22. These families have relied on the income from their religious hand carved olive wood ar facts. All the proceeds from sales will be sent back to the families of the Holy Land so that they may be able to keep their homes and provide for their families. Life has become very difficult for the Chris an families, and for many, this is the only source of income for them. Thank you for suppor ng our Chris an brothers and sisters. WE OFFER LOW GLUTEN HOSTS for Sunday and weekday Masses for those who are gluten intolerant. If you or anyone you know might be interested in more informa on please contact the liturgy office.

THE GOSPEL PREDICTS END TIMES; our challenge though is to live faithfully now. When we live in conformity to the Word, hearing Jesus’ words and living them out, the future holds no fear for us. Know you are hearing the words of Jesus and living them out when you donate to St. Vincent de Paul Society. The month of October the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at St. Joseph’s did 25 home visits helping 49 people with $1839.94 for u li es and rent. It also helped find household goods for new apartments.

ST. JOSEPH’S AND TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH have brought back the Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner on Thanksgiving Day. This FREE meal is being held at St. Joe's from 11:00 a.m. ‐ 1:00 p.m. We bring this social event back a er taking a year off. We ask you to contemplate the blessings in your life. As you think of all that is precious, likely people and big things come to mind. But what about reflec ng on the small things? A cup of warm coffee, a smile, a warm meal, a so chair. Let's bring this community meal back to allow those in our region a few hours of even the small things. Yes, a warm meal will be provided but this event fills needs in other ways. It is an opportunity to be social, to share a smile and to feel the presence of God. How can you help? Prayer: Please pray for those planning or

working the dinner, that with God as the guide we can feed and love and be the light of Christ to others. Pray for the guests who will be a ending. Pray too about how God is calling you to help.

Bake: Did you have an abundance of apples this fall? Pies are needed.

Spread the Word: Do you know someone who might be alone on Thanksgiving? This might include senior ci zens, homeless, those with no family nearby (or no family at all), and anyone else desiring social fellowship.

Monetarily: Do you have an extra $20 or even $5? A li le can go a long way!

Time: We would love to have your help with set up, preparing food, pla ng turkey, being a greeter, being a server or working in the kitchen. Please call the parish office to see how you can help (218) 236‐5066. Thank you!

Please note that individual rides will not be provided by the church, and there will be no takeout meals.

Gratitude for the Little Things

It’s so easy to be annoyed by the li le things. How hard can it be, then, to allow ourselves to be thankful for the li le things? The other day, I was on the verge of being completely annoyed by the traffic that made me miss my usual train. Instead, realizing that I was now “early” for the next train, I strolled at a leisurely pace from my parking spot to the train sta on. I took the me to appreciate the blue skies, the budding trees, the chirping birds, and the cool but warming breeze. Paying a en on to and being thankful for these “li le” things effec vely boxed out the annoyance of missing my usual train that wanted so desperately to win me over and to influence my day. Gra tude is not fluff. It is serious medicine—an effec ve an dote to the poisons of annoyance, exaspera on, and cynicism that vie for our a en on. The posi ve li le things that we can be thankful for each day are no less real than the nega ve li le things that annoy us. They simply don’t clamor as loudly as the nega ve things do. We need to develop a capability for recognizing the subtle li le things for which we are grateful and allow them to use their inherent power to overwhelm the nega ve. Take a moment to look around (and within) you: what li le things are you grateful for at this very moment? Joe Paprocki has more than 35 years of experience in ministry and has presented keynotes, presenta ons, and workshops in more than 100 dioceses in North America. He is the author of numerous books.

Thanksgiving: Gratitude Is a Prerequisite for Discipleship

As Thanksgiving is fast approaching, I’d like to share a few thoughts about gra tude. Today, more than ever, we are hearing the term discipleship used in Catholic circles, as we seek to breathe new life into the Church and advance the New Evangeliza on. It occurs to me that a prerequisite for discipleship is an a tude of gra tude—a virtue that leads us away from cynicism, pessimism, and indifference and toward hope, faith, and love (charity). I’m sure you’re familiar with the phrase “vicious circle,” which refers to circumstances in which the solu on to one problem leads to a new problem (or to a new version of the old one). Those comedic greats the Three Stooges were masters at crea ng vicious circles. One of the most famous examples of this is when the boys pose as plumbers. Curly a empts to fix a leak in the shower by connec ng a new pipe to the leaking pipe. Of course, the other end of the new pipe leaks, too—in response to which Curly con nues to add more pipes un l he has created a maze of pipes that trap him in the shower. Some mes, our efforts in life can feel exactly like that, especially when the “pipes” we use to “fix” things are cynicism, pessimism, and indifference. Fortunately, one of the huge benefits of an a tude of gra tude is that it creates not a vicious circle, but what my friend Fr. Paul Campbell, SJ, refers to as a “virtuous circle.” When we reflect on all the things we’re grateful for, we cul vate an a tude of gra tude, which in turn sparks a desire to generously serve others, which is the very heart of discipleship. And when we serve others in some way, we soon find ourselves reflec ng on the experience. This reflec on leads us back to gra tude and again to service—and voila, we have our “virtuous circle.” Cynicism, pessimism, and indifference are all a tudes that help create a “vicious circle” that eventually imprisons us, just like Curly’s maze of pipes. A “virtuous circle,” on the other hand, frees us to move beyond ourselves and to live as a person for others—as a disciple of Jesus Christ. Discipleship is not an authen c expression of faith unless it includes concerns for jus ce and human dignity—a concern that is fueled by an a tude of gra tude for the abundant graces God has provided for us and wants us to share. This Thanksgiving, allow your a tude of gra tude to fuel your discipleship—compelling you to be a person for others as you contribute to an ever‐growing virtuous circle. CHILDREN’S MOVIE TO WATCH: GOD WITH US: He was born in humble obscurity, yet His family had to flee to save Him from a jealous ruler. He forgave sins, healed the sick and gave hope to the downhearted and oppressed, yet He was despised and rejected by many. He spoke the truth even when it was dangerous to do so. He willingly laid down His life and then rose again, conquering the power of death! With newly enhanced anima on, it is the drama c retelling of the life of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of the last surviving apostle, John. Journey with Jesus and encounter His miracles, His astonishing teaching and His unsurpassed bravery. Discover the power and love of Jesus Christ and see why His followers risked all to carry His message to the ends of the earth. This powerful presenta on will encourage and inspire viewers to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Recommended for ages 7 and up. AUDIO BOOK: ACTS: What was the early Church like? How did they live, evangelize, and worship? How were the first disciples of Jesus converted to "the Way?" Modern Chris ans can gain insight on these and many other ques ons in the Acts of the Apostles. From the Ascension of Christ, to Pentecost, to St. Peter’s first sermon, to the conversion and preaching of St. Paul, the Acts of the Apostles brings us into the world of first century Chris anity and the radical love and powerful evangeliza on of the early Church.
