Reflection Sharing Our Gifts Autumn is the season for harvesting and sharing the fruits of our labors. This week’s scriptures use images of the harvest, family life, pregnancy, and investment to describe the abundant harvest in the reign of God. We discover that sharing the gifts we have been given brings eternal rewards for everyone. In the Gospel parable a master entrusts his possessions to three servants before going on a journey. Each is given some talents. What they do with those talents determines what the master will do with them when he returns. How about us? What are we doing with our talents? How will our Master treat us when he returns?

Why do we genuflect? Genuflection is defined as 'A reverence made by bending the knee, especially to express adoration of the Blessed Sacrament' (CCC 1378). As we walk into the house of God, a church, we show our adoration for Him by kneeing before Him. Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, deserves the same kind of admiration and honor we would give a grand king. When we walk into his throne room, out of respect for His glory hidden in the Tabernacle, we should genuflect or bow deeply as an outward show of our respect. “Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our maker.” Psalm 95:6 ~adopted from www. Lifeteen.com

Use it or Loose it Talents in Jesus’ time were large silver ingots. We define talents as our God-given abilities. Either way talents are there for a purpose—to be used. As Jesus’ story shows, money has no value if it is buried. Our abilities are just as worthless if we never use them. Do you know what yours are? They are those special aptitudes unique to you. Unfortunately, the stories of the saints have not always helped us. Some of us believe we have to have extraordinary gifts like them to do anything worthwhile. Not long ago a scientist set up an experiment. She matched people recently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis with people who had had the same illness longer. She expected the newly-diagnosed would show an improved outlook with a new “buddy,” and this proved true. Surprisingly, the outlook of the helpers improved even more. Just the listening and befriending made all the difference. Think carefully about what your true abilities are and use them for welcoming, spreading joy, making peace, healing, or comforting.
