  • PRESIDENT'S REPORT

To the Board of Directors, Ladies' Auxiliary, Advisory Board,

Young Folk's League, Donors, Patrons and Members of

the Hospital for Deformities and Joint Diseases.

In submitting the report for our third year's work, I wish to

extend my sincere thanks to the Members, Patrons and Donors,

who, by their financial aid and moral support, have assisted

us in our noble work of charity and humanity.

In submitting this report, I know you feel, as I do, that in

the growth and development of the Hospital for Deformities

and Joint Diseases we have supplied a much-needed want.

The demand upon our forty beds is continual, with a long

waiting list. In the past year we furnished beds to number

of 7,658 days and administered treatment to 1,609 new patients,

who received 16,979 treatments, but it would be unwise to

increase our financial obligations by enlarging our Hospital until

the present large mortgage is materially decreased, although the

waiting list and the crowded attendance at our clinic demon-

strates that we need much larger accommodations.

We were compelled in the past year to install a complete

heating plant and have the buildings repainted.

I more than appreciate the support that has been given this

Institution, and if only each one would interest one other it

would be possible to enlarge on the work which is being done.

There can be no charity more noble and human than that

which makes useful, self-supporting individuals out of unfor-

tunate cripples and rescues them from a life of helplessness and

    pauperism.

  • If some means could be devised to decrease our mortgage, the money used to pay interest could then be directed to furtherthe interests we have so much at heart. A country home forthe Summer months would mean much for the poor afflicted. We are desirous of raising in the next two years funds suf-

ficient to construct a modern hospital for one hundred and fiftybeds, so that we can in a measure meet the demand put uponus. Therefore, I want to impress upon you the urgent necessityfor each and every one to interest others in our cause.

I wish to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to theLadies' Auxiliary for the munificent sum realized from the fair, amounting to $4,329.39, as well as for their personal service andthe contribution of money, whereby much valuable aid was giventhe Hospital. They have been the first to endow a life-bed, andmay God bless them for it.My sincere thanks to Dr. Henry W. Frauenthal, Physician

and Surgeon-in-Chief, for his zeal and interest in the Institutionhe has founded and for his sacrifice of time and money in thethree months' sojourn in Europe during the past Summer, visiting other Institutions, in order to bring back to us themost modern thought and work in our particular branch ofmedicine and surgery. On behalf of myself and the Board of Directors, I wish to

express my thanks and high appreciation of the work doneby Dr. Herman C. Frauenthal in the Electrical Department, andas Acting Physician and Surgeon-in-Chief during July, Augustand September, while Dr. Henry W. Frauenthal was in Europe,as this increased demand upon his time and energy must, ofnecessity, have been done at a great personal sacrifice, particu-larly as it called him to the city during the hot Summer days, which illustrates his high sense of humanity. My sincere thanks to Miss Barden, our Superintendent for

whatever credit may be due this Institution, is in a large measuredue to the efficiency and at all times faithful and earnest effortson her part, to whom, I am sure, all the officers also feelobligated.

    32

  • My thanks to the nurses and assistants under the directionof Miss Barden for the cleanliness and order maintained at theHospital, as well as to the Misses Fein and Jackson for theaccuracy and neatness of their work.On behalf of the Hospital I wish to thank the Consulting

Staff for their aid and prompt response when called in consulta-tion; to the Physicians and Surgeons connected with the Hos-pital for their skill and devotion in aiding the afflicted who haveapplied for relief, and to the Masseurs and Masseuses for theirskill, patience and devotion in their work.In conclusion, I wish to add that I am very, very desirous that

all members and their friends visit the Hospital to view ourwork, as I know this will be the means of recruiting new mem-bers and thus increasing our treasury.

    Respectfully submitted,E. M. GATTLE,

    President.

    33

  • I

    ANNUAL REPORT OF

    THE PHYSICIAN AND SURGEON-IN-CHIEF

To the Board of Directors and Members of the Hospital forDeformities and Joint Diseases.

Ladies and Gentlemen:It undoubtedly is a source of great pleasure and gratification

to us all to observe the phenomenal growth of our Institution, and it is to be regretted that owing to the lack of funds that anadequate number of beds do not exist to meet the demand uponus; also that the space devoted to the treatment of children andadults • in the dispensary is not sufficient for comfort and toaccomplish the very best work.

It might be of interest to describe the work done in the variousdepartments of our Dispensary.

In the Physical Culture Room, where only individual instruc-tion is given, and where patients are compelled to concentratetheir minds on the physical effort by performing exercises beforea mirror, the results have been so far superior to those obtained

by any previous method of physical instruction that not only hasit been the means of materially increasing our clinic, but haswon the recognition and approval of the leading members ofthe profession, who have had the opportunity to see the results

thus obtained.Owing to the increased space in our Plaster Room, we have

been able to permit several surgeons to work at the same time, and thus handle more patients, thereby accomplishing much

    better results.

    34

  • The class in Weak and Flat Feet requires the attention of

two physicians and a nurse two hours daily.

Owing to the increasing number of patients requiring braces,

it is to be regretted that we have not the means nor the space

to have our own shop for constructing instruments.

The large number of children afflicted with Infantile Paralysis

from the epidemic of 1907, which has been materially augmented

by the epidemic of the past Summer, has taxed us almost beyond

limit, both on account of the number and on account of the

number of assistants required to give massage and administer

electricity. There has been a marked increase in the number of patients

with tubercular trouble, and our cases of Pott's Disease and Hip

    Disease have materially increased.

As we are the only Institution in the city which conducts a

night clinic for tubercular bone lesions, it is found a convenience

for those who are compelled to work during the day and are

not able to pay for private care.

We are possibly the only Institution that furnishes massage,

electricity, various forms of hyperemia, in combination with

dietetic and medicinal treatment for rheumatic and gouty con-

ditions; the number of persons thus afflicted has very markedly

increased in the past year, and this is a class of cases for which

we have not sufficient beds.We have opened a course of instruction to blind individuals

who are furnished us from the Blind Asylum, whom we are

instructing in the art of massage thus making them able to

earn a livelihood. We are again indebted to the Sanitarium for Hebrew Children

for the care of our children at the seashore during the months

of July and August. I wish to personally use this means to

extend my thanks to Mr. Herman Levy and the other members

of that Board. We all must realize the necessity of haying our own home in

the country open all the year round to permit the children to

have as many hours in the open air as possible.

    35

  • Our location permits us to utilize Mt. Morris Park, whichis directly opposite the Institution, for the children to spend thepleasant hours of the day in the open air in the charge of anurse but to continue this we will require more nurses for thisspecial care, which means additional expense.I regret exceedingly that owing to our being without a patho-

logical laboratory, we depend upon the personal kindness of Dr.Harlow Brooks and the Rockefeller Institute for our blood testsand pathological determinations, and I sincerely hope that fundswill be shortly forthcoming to permit us to do this work at theHospital, as it will materially aid us in obscure cases and inmaking differential diagnoses.

Forty-one physicians give their time and services gratuitouslyat the Institution in our work of charity and humanity, and Iwish to take this occasion to thank the Consulting Staff for theirpromptness and for their generous expense of time in visitingthe Hospital and aiding us with their advice and suggestions.

I wish to thank the various active Attendings of the Hos-pital and Clinic for their painstaking effort in the treatment ofour patients and for their prompt attention. To Miss Barden, the Superintendent, and the nurses who

assist her in the care of our patients, I extend my sincere thanksfor their painstaking labor in behalf of the patients.

I wish to congratulate the Bookkeeper on the neatness andaccuracy of her accounts and reports. To the Registrar, whose records have been most carefully

compiled, and whose aim it is to prevent any imposition or abuseof our charity, I wish to acknowledge her work with cordialthanks. To Mrs. Hattie Landman and Mrs. Lemuel Baum, who sacri-

fice their time in investigating doubtful cases, so that our charityis not imposed upon, I wish to express my appreciation andgratitude.

I urge all of you who are present to visit the Hospital asoften as convenient, also to bring your friends, as there is nobetter way to obtain a due sense of appreciation of what we are

doing and also to increase our membership.36

  • I hope that some means may be devised by which a Hospitalof one hundred and fifty beds with modern Hospital appoint-ments may be obtained in the next few years, and that we maythus have facilities to cope with the great demand put upon us,but this can only be done by a large increasing membership andsubstantial donations. The table on the following page gives a numerical account of

the various diseases in the 1,609 new cases treated in the pastyear. We have furnished beds to number of 7,658 days in the year

just ended, and have administered 16,979 treatments to 1,609Patients.

    Respectfully submitted,HENRY W. FRAUENTHAL, M. D.

  • PRESIDENT'S REPORT OF LADIES' AUXILIARY

To the Officers and Members of the Ladies Auxiliary:Our Auxiliary continues its good work in materially assisting

the Hospital to meet the growing demands made upon it by theincreasing number of clinical and ward patients.

In the past year we enrolled twelve new patrons and twenty-six members, making a total of one hundred and eighty-fivemembers and thirty-nine patrons. I earnestly hope that you willassist me in endeavoring to further increase our membership list.Whosoever visits the Hospital becomes interested in its work;therefore, invite your friends to visit us. It is always a case ofcoming, seeing, giving. We deeply regret the passing away of our members,

Mrs. H. Nordlinger, Mrs. I. Josepthal, and Mrs. A. Nelson,

who were among the first to join us.We have in the past year supplied the Hospital with new fur-

niture, kitchen utensils, bedding, etc., and have recently furnisheda floor for our nurses. In addition to this, the Ladies' Auxiliaryvoted $800.00 out of their treasury to be handed to the Board ofDirectors of the Hospital, which, in addition to the $7oo.00 do-nated on a previous occasion, has established for our Auxiliary amemorial bed in the Children's Ward, which section of theHospital appeals most to our mother hearts. It is a source ofgreat satisfaction to the ladies to feel that as long as the Hos-pital shall exist there will always be some little soul whoseaffliction can be ameliorated through the ministrations it shall

receive in this bed.Owing to the increasing need of supplies, let me beg of you,

    61

  • Ladies of the Auxiliary, to attend our semi-monthly sewing meetings with greater regularity. Aside from the fact that we canthus do much work, it is most interesting to note the improvement in various cases. Some little ones who were strapped toboards last Winter now walk around almost ready to be dismissedTo see such grand results stimulates interest in the work andmakes us leave the Hospital contented and feeling that we arehelping to equalize the battle of life for many beings. In closing, I wish to thank our Officers and Directresses for

their endeavors during the past year. I also again take occasionto thank our Matron, Miss Barden, for the assistance she hasrendered and to ,express our great satisfaction at the clean andsanitary condition of the Hospital.

    Respectfully submitted,FLORENCE R. LONG,

    President.

  • PRESIDENT'S REPORT

To the Officers, Board of Directors and Directresses, and Mem-

    bers of the Young Ladies' and Gentlemen's League of the;

Hospital for Deformities and Joint Diseases:

In submitting this, the first report of our League, it must

be a source of gratification to all to observe the great success

we have attained in the few months of our existence. We have

grown from four to one hundred and twenty-five in number

in the short period of three months.

The members have been so enthusiastic in our work that

instead of holding one meeting a month, we have had two

regularly, and each and every one of these has been a social

success. We have gained at each gathering from twenty to

thirty new members.Enthusiasm seems to be so great that the Board, having always

in mind to help and uplift the noble work for which our Institu-

tion stands, has donated to the Hospital authorities the sum of

one hundred dollars at the annual meeting of the Hospital.

After our organization was firmly established and success had

come to us, we began to think in what particular way we could

    help the Hospital.

I wish to thank Mr. Underndorfer for his donation of all

printed matter for the League. To the Officers and Members of the Board and of the League

I wish to express my sincere thanks for the support they have

given me in this great and noble charity for which our League

    stands.Respectfully submitted,

    ARTHUR S. UNGER, M.D.,President.

  • SECRETARY'S REPORT

To the Officers and Members of the Young Ladies' and Gentle,-

    men's League:

This report is of a preliminary nature, due to the fact that

the League is only in its infancy, having been organized inSeptember, 1909.The first open meeting was held on October loth, since which

date two other meetings took place.

We have to date a membership numbering one hundred and

thirty, and are exceedingly fortunate in possessing a number

of real sterling workers, and judging by their accomplishments

thus far, the outlook is, to say the least, very promising.Respectfully submitted,
