Dates to Remember for Term 4
Principal’s Report
Outdoor Classroom Day
Today is Outdoor Classroom day and the weather was certainly perfect for it. Our 5/6 students ventured to the local gardens to engage in learning activities in this alternate setting. The global movement of Outdoor Classroom Day aims to engage students in better collaboration, problem solving whilst promoting good physical and mental health.
Miss Erin’s News
Our staff received some wonderful news this week. Miss Erin and her partner welcomed Angus Stephen Reid into the world. Both Angus and Miss Erin are doing well and we are looking forward to a visit from them when they are both ready.
Enrolments
We are busy preparing class placements and structures for 2019. If you are yet to officially enrol your child at our school, or are not returning in 2019, please inform us as soon as possible.
Have a wonderful weekend :)

Dear Parents,
Celebrating Teachers
This week we celebrated the hard work of our wonderful teachers. On the 26th of October, it was National Teachers’ Day in Australia. On the 5th of October it was World Teachers’ Day. We are so very lucky to have such dedicated and passionate people teaching our children. Day in, day out, I witness our teachers go above and beyond their call of duty.
Grade 1/2 Late night/Sleepover
Last week I had the pleasure of assisting the 1/2 Team with their Late Night/Sleepover. Many of our Grade 6 students volunteered to stay behind after school to run some tabloid style sports, which was a great leadership opportunity for them. I must commend the students for their outstanding behaviour during the event and a huge pat on the back to the 1/2 team for organising and coordinating the evening.
Arts Extravaganza
Next Thursday evening will be our Arts Extravaganza. This year, we are hosting the event at school in front of the Learning Centre. We are encouraging as many families as possible to join the event. Please bring along a picnic dinner, some chairs or a picnic rug to sit on, relax and enjoy our students performances. Our newly redeveloped Kitchen Garden will be on show and we will be serving garlic bread from our new pizza oven. Our superstar Earthlings team will be able to tell you all about our new garden and how they contribute to sustainability across our school environment.
Swimming
Our Prep-2 swimming program officially concluded this week. It was great to see so many students participate and learn many vital survival skills in the water. There were a few tired little ones this week, which is to be expected. There were a few parent helpers that I would like to mention for their continued support in walking the students to and from the pool and aiding in supervision. To Lyn, Narelle, Fiona, Jess, Jeremy, Michael, Karli, L auren, Emma, Regan, Jess, Hayley, Nicole, Tamara, Jacqui, Jade, Leanne, Amanda and Judy - thank you so much for your support.

Middle School . . .
Students in the Middle School have been very busy so far this term. We are currently finishing off our unit in
Numeracy on Subtraction with some fantastic results driven by our learning goals, we each have set.
We loved writing something we haven’t written before in ‘reviews’. We learnt that we can write a review on not
only books but, movies, toys, restaurants, food and experiences about holiday attractions.
Sarah said “I loved writing the review on a short movie called the Blue Umbrella. It taught me a lesson on fighting for love and what
I care for.”
We are also very deep into our Mappen learning. This is called ‘Our Island Home’. We are loving finding out about the different
lines that help separate our planet into sections, and learning about the different climates and how they relate to those areas.
Toby “I didn’t realise that it rained so much around the equator! I thought that being hotter it would be drier.”
The 3\4 teachers are also planning our Community Games for the end of term. Keep an eye out for information later on in the year.

Senior School . . .
We have enjoyed a great three weeks at our swimming lessons. Mrs D & Miss Sanford have been so impressed with everyone’s effort to challenge themselves and get out of their comfort zones. Some of our amazing Prep World members put their head under the water for the first time, others jumped in the deep end, some learnt how to turn their head on the side to breath while doing freestyle, a few others learnt how to dress themselves independently and all of us practised crossing the road safely on our walk. We are so proud of everyone’s Growth Mindset and stamina towards an activity that requires so much energy and effort – AMAZING WORK PREP’S!!!! We would also like to say a big thank-you to all of our family members who walked with us to and/or from the pool. You are great!
The Grade 1s and 2s have had a few really busy weeks with swimming and our Late Night and Sleep
Over. Thank you to the parents who have walked with us, to swimming, each day. A huge thank you to
the Mr Oliver, Mr Collins and the Grade 6s for running games for our Late Night and Sleep Over. Also, to
all the staff who helped on the night – BBQ cooking, supervising, making beds, getting breakfast and
making lunch.
“I really enjoyed learning how to swim in the deep end, even though I was scared at first.” Toneyha
“I got better at backstroke and free style. It was really good fun.” Stephanie
“I learnt how to do backstroke. I really enjoyed that.” Ryder
“My favourite part of the Sleepover was watching the movie when we were in bed. It was all really exciting and I
was happy.” Ellie
“I got to have a sleep in because I usually have to get up really early in the morning.” Tanu
The Senior School is currently working towards having Community proposals ready for our Mappen topic. Students are busy
brainstorming and researching ideas on how to improve their community. Some of the great ideas have included building activity
areas for Ararat youth to improving safety by adding more street lights to areas of the community. It’s been fantastic hearing all
the wonderful ideas.
Today we celebrated Outdoor Classroom Day. As a Senior School, we participated in various learning activities in the yard, as well
as travelling to the Gardens to discover other ways of learning within our community. It was great seeing the learning that could
be achieved in a different environment.
Similar to the past, at this time of the year, our Grade 6’s are starting to think about
next year. Please take time to talk with your child about the adjustments and change
that will occur, as they transition to a whole new learning environment.

Words, words and more words…
Soundwaves
This fortnight, the sounds that we are focusing on for Soundwaves are ‘y’ as in yo-yo and ‘oo’ as in boot.
The ‘y’ phoneme is particularly tricky because there are so many ways that it can be made – think about yucky, billiard, union, curi-ous, neutral and queue!!
Helping out with spelling at home
There are lots of ways that you can help your child to practise their spelling words at home….and keep it fun! Here are some ideas that you can try this week.
Our SRC representatives for Semester 2 are as follows:
