Diocesan Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA)

The Annual Diocesan Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA), formerly known as the Annual Diocesan Appeal, is a primary source of funding to help sustain and expand ministries in the 114 parishes, 30 schools, seminary, pro-grams and departments of the diocesan church. Our parish goal for this year is $42,680.00. As of October 21st update we are at $29,534.00 or 69% of our goal. We wish to thank everyone who has

made a donation to the appeal and encourage others to prayerfully consider making a donation to the appeal. Donation envelopes are at the end of the pews or at the entrances to the church. You may also go online at http://www.dow.org/CMA .

PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3

The commemoration of All Souls is a time to pray for what has been traditional called “poor souls”. Why do we say poor souls? Because the souls who are in purgatory are in a state of purification and waiting for our prayers to take them to heaven. The purgatory is a place where souls suffer for a time after death on account of their sins. The souls that go to Purgatory are those who depart this life in venial sin; or that have not fully paid the debt of temporal punishment due to those sins of which the guilt has been forgiven. Temporal punishment is punishment for a spiritual debt that is yet unsatisfied, but which will have an end, either in this world, or in the world to come. The souls which love God perfectly at the moment of death go straight to Heaven. The souls which do not love Him at all go straight to hell. Both Heaven and Hell will endure for all eternity. The II Vatican Council following the tradition of the Church founded in the biblical sources affirmed the importance of the purgatory. Some people think that II Vatican Council abolished the teaching of purgatory but that is not true. On the contrary, there is an important document “Lummen Gentium” where the Church affirms the teaching of purgatory. The Council states: “Until the Lord shall come in his majesty, and all the angels with him (cf. Mt 25:31) and death being destroyed, all things are subject to him (cf. 1Cor 15:26-27), some of his disciples are exiles on earth, some having died are purified, and others are in glory beholding ‘clearly God himself triune and one, as he is”; but all in various ways and degrees are in communion in the same charity of God and neighbor and all sing the same hymn of glory to our God (LG 49). Fully conscious of this communion of the whole Mystical Body of Jesus Christ, the pilgrim Church from the very first ages of the Christian religion has cultivated with great piety the memory of the dead, and “because it is a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead that they may be loosed from their sins” (2Mc 12:46), also offering suf-frages for them (LG 50). St. Padre Pio said: “Holy Souls are eager for the prayers of the faithful which can gain indul-gences for them. Their intercession is powerful. Pray unceasingly. We must empty Purgatory.” What a beautiful saying. What can we do in order to empty purgatory, first we must not be naïve and think that nobody is in Purgatory, secondly to offer prayers and sacrifices for their transition, and thirdly to gain the indulge granted for those who pray for the Poor Souls in Purgatory. From November 1st to November 8th we can visit the cemetery with mental prayer for the poor souls. On November 2nd: go to church and recite one Our Father and one Creed for the souls. A partial indulgence can be obtained any time by visiting a cemetery and praying for the poor souls. The following prayer is recommended: “Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.” These are the rules for obtaining a plenary indulgence for the Souls in Purgatory: 1. state of grace at least when performing the indulgence act; 2. com-plete detachment from sin, even venial sin; 3. confession (eight days before or after the indulgenced act); 4. Commun-ion (eight days before or after the indulgenced act); 5. prayers for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff, the Pope; 6. Indulgenced act: a special good work with special conditions of place and time. “Eternal Rest grant to them, O Lord, and let Perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen”
