News from the P.I.T. – Priest in Training
This weekend we celebrate Christ the King. The Church marks this weekend as a solemnity, which is one of the highest celebrations in the Church. And yet, I believe we don’t grasp the beauty of this celebration. First, we live in a democratic society that was known from moving past a monarchy. Second, to proclaim someone as king gives someone authority over me, which would infringe on my rights! So you can imagine the struggle in accepting such a celebration.
And yet, I believe it’s still important to celebrate! Why? We need to move past our modern idea of distant and priv-ileged monarchies, like the ones we see in Europe. A king in the Old Testament, like King Saul or King David, be-came king because they were willing to fight for their peo-ple. Right after the King was anointed as King, Saul and David went to fight Israel’s enemy. If anyone within the kingdom was attacked, the king would respond!
Currently we live in an age where more people believe that God is distant or doesn’t even exist. And yet as Catho-lics, we proclaim something different. We proclaim a God who is not only among the people, but also willing to fight and die for us! How much more do we need to hear this! Now, if we could only acknowledge and rejoice in the King who died, rose from the dead, and saved us from our ultimate end; sin and death!
Fr. Michael Kearney

FAITH FORMATION
Faith Matt-ers
By Matt Pozen—Director of Parish Faith Formation
The Last Things: Death, Judgment, and Eternal Life (November 20, 2016)
Page 5
For the past five weeks we’ve been journeying through the Old Testament in search of the Jewish roots of the Christian understanding of “The Last Things” (death, judgment, and eternal life). We’ve noticed that, while early Israelite faith did not reflect much on the ultimate future of individuals, it did focus quite a bit on the future of Israel as a people. Last week we looked at the message of the prophets regarding God’s coming judgment: the “Day of the Lord” when Israel would be judged as a whole nation. We saw how the prophet Ezeki-el, who lived through the Babylonian Exile (587-539 BC), began to shift the focus more toward God’s judgment of indi-viduals. Ezekiel also shows the beginnings of an “apocalyptic” view of the future, wherein the current course of history would be brought to a cataclysmic end by God’s direct intervention, and the new world of God’s ultimate reign would then begin. Finally, we ended last week by looking at two of the wisdom writings in the Old Testament, Job and Ecclesiastes, noting how they questioned the simplistic as-sumption that the just are blessed in this life while the wicked fail. The Jews had not yet developed an understanding of the judgment and separation of individuals after death, with the just inheriting some type of eternal reward and the unjust in-heriting eternal punishment.
In 539 BC, the Persian Empire conquered the Babylonians and allowed the Israelites to return to their promised land. (Since these returning Israelites settled in its southern region of Judah, they would be called “Jews” from this point for-ward.) Even though the Jews were allowed to rebuild their homeland and the Temple in Jerusalem, the Persians did not allow them to have their own king. Rather, Judah became a province of the Persian Empire, to be ruled by a Jewish gov-ernor who was beholden to the Persians. So the Jewish hope for the re-establishment of the kingdom of David was thwart-ed, and the hope for an anointed king in the line of David, a messiah, was postponed.
In 333 BC, Alexander the Great led his Greek armies in the conquest of the Persian Empire. So after 200 years of Persian rule, the Jews now became subjects of the Greek Empire. The prophetic hope for judgment and salvation within this world would gradually be replaced by the “apocalyptic” hope for God’s judgment of this world and salvation in a new world. This shift can be seen in some of the last prophets in the Old Testament (Zechariah, Joel, and Malachi), who built upon the earlier work of Ezekiel. These more apocalyptic prophets hoped for a final direct intervention by God, who would de-feat Israel’s enemies and punish the sinful within Israel. Fur-ther, they began to talk about the real enemy that God would vanquish as “The Dragon”, “The Beast”, or “Satan”, who was the evil force behind the wickedness of the world and the sin-ners within Israel. (They may have picked up this notion from the Persians, who believed that the world was ruled by two gods: one good and one evil.) These apocalyptic prophets
used mythic language to describe a final cosmic battle be-tween God and the Dragon. After vanquishing the Dragon, God would transform the world in an act of “new creation”.
A further step toward full-blown apocalyptic took place around the year 175 BC. At that time a Greek ruler named Antiochus began to see himself as a kind of semi-divine fig-ure. He added the title “Epiphanes” to his name, which means “God made manifest”, and he tried to force the Jews to wor-ship only the Greek gods and himself. He marched his armies into Judah and erected an altar to Zeus in the Jerusalem Tem-ple, thus desecrating this central shrine of the Jews. He also tried to destroy Jewish identity by forcing them to eat pork and contradicting the Sabbath laws. These actions sparked a revolt among the Jews, led by a man named Judas Macca-beus. During this “Maccabean Revolt” many faithful Jews were put to death for refusing to disobey their religious laws, while other Jews gave in and compromised. The fate of these faithful Jews raised serious questions concerning traditional Jewish notions about death and the afterlife. The assumption that the just would prosper in this life, while the wicked would not, was directly contradicted by this experience of persecution. If, after death, both the just and the wicked ended up in the same shadowy underworld of Sheol, then where was God’s justice for these individuals? To say that God would eventually bring about the defeat of Israel’s enemies and the blessing of future generations provided some comfort and hope, but it failed to adequately reward the individual Jews who had died for their faith.
It was in this historical context that the book of Daniel was written, the most fully developed apocalyptic book in the Old Testament. The stories and visions in this book are portrayed as taking place in Babylon during the time when the Jews were exiled there (587-539 BC), but the book was actually written 400 years later, during the Maccabean Revolt. The first six chapters of the book provide inspiring tales about the plight of Daniel and his friends serving in the royal court of Babylon. These stories of how God rescued faithful Jews dur-ing a time of religious persecution would have provided com-fort and hope to Jews living during the time of the Maccabean Revolt. Yet, it is the apocalyptic visions of Daniel 7-12 that are of greatest concern for us as we trace the development of Jewish belief concerning death and the afterlife.
In chapter 7, Daniel has a dream in which he sees a succes-sion of four “immense beasts” emerge from “the great sea” and wreak havoc upon the earth, with the fourth beast being the worst of all. Later in the chapter an angel interprets the vision for Daniel, saying that the beasts represent a succes-sion of four powerful world empires. Reading between the lines we see that these empires are the ones that ruled over the Jews for four centuries: the Babylonians, the Persians, the Greeks, and Antiochus Epiphanes. Next week we will contin-ue the exploration of Daniel 7-12.

Christ the King
O Lord our God, you are worthy to receive glory and honor and power. For you have created all things: by your will they came to be and were made.
Worthy are you, O Lord, to receive the scroll and break open its seals. For you were slain, with your blood you purchased for God men of every race and tongue, of every people and nation.
You made of them a kingdom, and priests to serve our God, and they shall reign on the earth. Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches,
Wisdom and strength, honor and glory and praise. (Revelation 4:11; 5-9, 10, 12)
Our loving King awaits your presence in the Adoration Chapel. His eyes are ever upon each one of us, his subjects. Enter the throne room of Our Lord who promised to be with us always, even to the end of time. Let us pray to Christ the King, King of Kings, King of the universe!
Christ, our leader and savior, form all men into your own people, heal the sick, seek out the lost, guard the strong. May your kingdom come, O Lord.
Call back those who have wandered far away, strengthen those who waver, gather all your sheep into one flock. May your kingdom come, O Lord.
Judge of all ages, when you hand over your kingdom to the Father, place us at your right hand, so that we may inherit the kingdom prepared for us from the beginning of the world. May your kingdom come, O Lord.
(Intercessions, Liturgy of the Hours, Christ the King)
Currently, there is an empty hour from 12:00-1:00 !.". on Tuesdays. Also, many hours need willing partners who
want to praise Our Lord! For more information, call Joan Taylor 630-530-8963 or Mary Lewis 630-941-9173.
The Close of Year of Mercy
Dear Parish Family, We have been so blessed to sing the Hymn for the Holy Y ear of Mercy during our liturgies since early 2016. We will
close the Year of Mercy by singing it at our Masses this weekend. The words of the refrain are in Latin to reflect the universal Catholic Church: Misericordes sicut pater (Merciful like the Father) Please join in singing this at liturgies this weekend and the Choir will bring it back in the future as well. Remember you
can always find it on the Web to listen and reflect on the texts in your prayers and times of reflection.
Thank You Elmhurst College Women’s Choir!
I would like to extend our deepest thanks to the 40-voice Elmhurst College Women’s Choir under the direction of Donna Tallman for singing so beautifully at our October 30 Sunday noon Mass. Visitation Women’s Christ Renew His Parish (CRHP)
I am a born and raised Catholic. I thought I knew how to pray. I thought I knew what Christianity was all about. I thought I understood what it meant to be Catholic. I thought I was pretty close to God. After CRHP, I learned what it meant to truly pray and listen to the word of God. I learned how to feel God’s presence, and feel him surround me. I learned what being part of a friendship circle and community really meant. Before CRHP, I was kind of just going through life on auto-pilot. The weekend allowed me to totally focus on what was really important, God and his works. And I made new friends who share with me the love of life and our Lord. The experience is priceless and my life has been changed forever………..Marcia
Please consider joining us for a CRHP Renewal week-end here at Visitation on January 28-29, 2017.
There will be an informational gathering in the parish center with wine and cheese on Thursday, January 12 at 7:00 !.". For more information please contact either Michele (312)502-3407 or Mary (630)605-8817.
CCW Woman of the Week
Gail Vitek
*How long have you been a Visitation pa-rishioner? We have been parishioners at Vis-itation since we moved to Elmhurst in 1992. *Tell us about your family. My husband, Don, and I are the proud parents of four chil-dren. They all graduated from Visitation Grade School and IC Catholic Prep (with the pending May 2017 graduation of our “baby”). Andrew will graduate from The University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign in December; Grace is a junior at Pepperdine University; Gretchen is a
sophomore in the Nursing program at University of Iowa; Robert is a Senior at IC Catholic Prep.
*What do you enjoy about CCW? I love that CCW is a Parish-wide fellowship of extraordinary women which of-fers a variety of events, activities, and programs for women to become involved in. There is something for everyone. It’s a wonderful way to meet other women and develop lifelong friendships.
*How do you “let your faith radiate” into the com-munity? What are some volunteer r oles you have taken on? I am a past Board member and President of CCW. Having held these positions has given me a true insider’s view of how remarkable the Visitation CCW is and how willing women are to make that happen. When I was pre-paring for my year as President, I wasn’t sure if I could find enough women to chair the many and various com-mittees that fall under CCW. My worries didn’t last very long! I easily recruited women who were willing to give their time, effort, spirit and creativity to our Parish. My Faith in God guided me through the year.
One amazing thing that I discovered about CCW is the compassion people have for others. They will prepare meals, donate gift cards, gather for prayer, offer rides, etc. and they may not even know whom they are doing these great deeds for. They just want to help. I am very grateful to be involved in CCW, it’s been a very important part of my life!
*Share with us your favorite bible verse. James 1:2-3 − “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and
sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

Good Turn Sunday
The slogan of the Boy Scouts of America is “Do a good turn daily!” The Boy Scouts of Troop 14 and the Cub Scouts of Pack 14, chartered through Visitation Church, have teamed up to put those words into action.
This Sunday, November 20, from 1:30-3:00 #."., our Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts will be going door-to-door collecting food for the needy people in the Chicago area. We are asking you to donate what you can, preferably dried and canned foods. It would save us time with our collection efforts if you would just leave your donation in a bag on your front steps. Our Scouts will know what to do! Your gift will help so many needy, and it will teach the Scouts a valuable lesson about helping and giving.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Assistant Scoutmaster Paul Esposito at 630-530-4647.
