November is the month when our trackdriving and competitive driving eventscomplete for the year. For 2003, no more
Autocrosses, Time-Trials, Drivers Educations,or Maverick-Sponsored Club Racing. Lookingat this year from that perspective leaves mefeeling fulfilled. We had four autocross andtime trial driving schools, seven autocrosses,
six time trials, four drivers educations at racetracks, and ourannual club race. We also had a rally school, two rallies, and afew Concours Events. We hold our annual region dinner,Founder’s Day in November. This year it’s on November 8th atthe Speedway Club at Texas Motor Speedway. Founder’s Day isour annual celebration of the founding and tradition ofMaverick Region. We vote and submit ballots for the upcomingyear’s officers and present awards and recognize members foroutstanding service and contribution to the region. We also giveout trophies to the competitors who drove in Autocrosses andTime Trials during the year and placed. There is a silent auction,many door prizes you can win, and a great time for socializingwith fellow Mavericks. I hope you’re reading this knowing you’llbe joining us, and if not, you’ll think about coming to Founder’sDay next year. While the competitive driving season is over, thecalendar is not empty. There are still many activities and eventsgoing on between now and the end of the year.
Now that the weather has changed, on a completely different note, exterior car-care can be a big part of thePorsche-nut’s mentality. Some folks do it all by themselveswhile others utilize detailing services or automatic or hand carwashes. Of the do-it-yourself crowd I’ve talked to people whobuy more expensive car care products and those who purchaselower-priced items readily available at auto parts stores andWal-Mart, etc. I wonder what is really the ultimate system? I have chatted with people pretty well versed in everythingfrom hiding swirl marks to removing Cosmoline from theirundercarriage on a newer Porsche. I’m looking for that ultimate combination of an easy-to-use, best quality, yet inexpensive set of products. I have always been careful aboutkeeping my cars clean and waxed, but never really had a “system” that included every step- where you park your car,covers, washing schedules and the like. So I made up my own“system” that is reasonably cheap and fast to follow. I developed this system by asking many people about theirmethods for keeping their Porsches shiny and wear-free.
I decided that when I traded my first Boxster S in for a newer one, I would attempt to develop a complete maintenance “lifestyle” for that car- something I had neverdone before. Let me explain: I put 20,000 miles on the firstBoxster in just under 2 years time, and did nothing

exceptional to prevent or eliminate rock nicks, fallout, or normal abuse. I washed the car whenever it got fairly dirty andwaxed it once every 3 months, tops. Let me give the conclusionfirst, by saying that this new Boxster S has 17,000 miles on itin 17 months and it looks light-years better than the first one.It has been on the racetrack, autocrossed, and driven on thehighway a lot. So let me share with you what I did:
First, as far as prevention, I use a Porsche nose bra to coverthe front of the car. It is installed about 75 percent of the time.This bra has eliminated most front paint chips (especially atDrivers Education events and on the highway). I wash the brawhen I wash the car and then remove it and wash the nose ofthe car. I never put the bra on wet, and always put it on a cleancar. Another approach is the 3M clear protective pieces thatcan be glued to most surfaces- rocker panels, hoods, bumpersand fenders. Racecars use this material a lot. The film is almostinvisible and looks great. That solves the problem bras generate- beautiful car- ugly plastic nose mitten. You can buysheets of this protective film or pre-cut specific model designsfor bras, etc. It’s a squeegee and patience job I’m told. It comesoff with a heat gun. In the future I may attempt to install someof this myself, or have it done by an installer. Second, Iinstalled small mud-flaps (yes, you read that correctly) fromTweeks that are not obtrusive and protect the front and rearrocker panels from debris and dirt kicked up by the tires.Third, I bought a car cover and use it whenever the car spendsthe night outside. Finally, when I go to the track or anautocross, I use some racers tape strategically placed aroundthe wheel well arches and rear bumper to keep additionalrocks off the paint. I use mineral spirits or products like“Goof-Off” to get the goo off after I remove the tape. The caris nearly chip-free.
I also decided to try a fast detailing method for the exterior. I buy the gallon sizes of Meguiars car wash and QuickDetail from www.carcareonline.com, Eagle-1 “Wax-as-U-Dry”from Wal-Mart, and Costco’s gallon-size Kirkland version ofSimple Green. I use the Meguiars car wash and then the Eagle-1.That “Wax-as-U-dry” is great. Spray it on a wet car and dry asusual. The car feels waxed and smooth. I use the Quick Detailspray a couple of times per month also. I use the Costco greencleaner on the wheels and inside fender wells. I have yet to actually wax the car. But I will soon, and will use 3M ImperialHand Glaze followed by Meguiars #26 yellow wax.
I also learned about micro-fiber towels for applying andremoving products. These towels leave no little threads, fuzzetc. on the surface. They can be bought from body shop supplystores, carcareonline above, and Griots garage, among othersources. They, however, are not cheap! I’m thinking of buyingthe gallon of car wash and the spray detailer from GriotsGarage when my current Meguiars inventory runs out to trysomething different. I assume some company manufactureschemicals for Griots as he is a retailer, but if one of you knowmore, please let me know. Till next month then, keep the shinyside up, the greasy side down, and clean the grease off.

The Board meeting was held at Park PlacePorsche on Tuesday, October 7 andcalled to order at 7:06pm.
Attendees: Cody Sears, Noby Takahashi,Mike Brodigan, Dennis Chamberlain, JoelNannis, Wendy Shoffit, Lanean Hughes, BobKnight, Tinker Edwards, Michael Wingfield,Keith Olcha, Mark Gluck and Mimi Spreen.
Keith - Brought financials (really income statements) andexpenditures which were passed out to everyone. Discussiontook place about publishing these and a decision was made tohave them at the Board Meetings on a quarterly basis.
Wendy - with the Matt hat on. Article deadline is 10/12which will help in finishing by the 17 or 18 and will be able toget the Ussery by the 20th of the month. Thanx to Wendy.Many articles are still needed and "volunteers" will submit toMatt. This issue is looking a little thin, so articles are needed.
Wendy, as Wendy - Regarding the Slipstream mailings thathave been discussed in length, we will do a trial run to iron outany problems with labels and if the printing of the labelsworks out ok, then we will proceed. Andy Mears is working onobtaining a bulk mail permit. Motion made to set a limit of$300.00 for outside Slipstream mailings, seconded and passed.Also, a grad student at Texas Tech is working on designing anew web site as part of her thesis. Will have more on that inthe next few months.
Joel - members are good. He has received a few responsesto letters he sent out regarding renewals. Only 1 of 5 wantedto renew and tried on line with National, who was having aproblem with their on line process. Joel will continue for 1more month and see if it is worthwhile. He believes that during and after Parade 04, membership will increase by about 100.
Bob - will have more expenditures that weren't on the listthat Keith passed out, that will effect the bottom line. Updatedbudgets for Parade 04 needed from committee chair.
Mike Brodigan - 5 new prospects for advertisers. Willcheck with Matt to see how much room we have for newadvertisers. Would like to ask advertisers to write a shortstatement that they would like readers to know about them, ie:new concepts, new products. Mike will put together a letternotifying advertisers of this new idea. He would also like to puttogether a Parade edition to be included in the June Slipstreamor be a stand alone issue that has Ft. Worth restaurants andother places where Parade attendees can go or visit while in Ft.Worth. Mike is asking for help in putting that together.Suggested that he talk to Jan and Fran about ideas.
Cody - tech at the track went well. Had a good turnout.There was a pretty large oil spill on the track that made it necessary to change the course to avoid the spill. Pennington's2004 dates have been firmed up, but still trying to firm updates at Mineral Wells.
Dennis - The October 16th Happy Hour is at RPM, whichused to be Cafe Vienna. BYOB and cheap food. Lots ofparking and can use the outdoor patio if weather is nice. TheNovember 20th HH is at Abbey in Richardson with musicalentertainment.
Lanean - Scheduling committee met and 2004 dates areset. Founder's Day is right around the corner and would liketo get as many people to attend as possible. The Residence Innnear TMS is offering a $69.00 per night rate for the night ofOctober 25, the Halloween party, which puts you right therefor the Charity Autocross the next day and also for Founder'sDay, Nov. 8.

As I write this, we've had a blast of a coldfront come through. I hope that last weekwas the end of our 90 degree tempera-
tures for a few months, I'm looking forward tohitting the roads with the windows open and acool breeze flowing through the car.
The fall driving season is winding down, Ihope everyone made it out to as many events
as they could. I know I was planning on driving more this year,but things never work out as planned, do they? This seasonappears to be tour season - the Arkansas tour was a hit, Fall DayTour is coming up on the 15th followed by the North Texas HillCountry Scenic Drive on the 22nd. The Fall Day Tour departsfrom Mesquite on Hwy 80, while the North Texas Hill CountryScenic Drive departs "out west" in Fort Worth on UniversityDrive. I'm intrigued by the Scenic Drive as it's promoted asbeing either (your choice) a TSD Rally or an instructed tour.I'm not much of a rally-ist, so I'm thinking about the

instructed tour. I don't know exactly where the "North TexasHill Country" is, but I'm guessing it's many of the same roadsthat I strafe with my motorcycle every other Sunday. I'm reallylooking forward to it. RSVP to Ted Glover or Teri Davis for theappropriate event if you would like to join the fun.
I've heard that our Happy Hours have been a hit lately,even in poor weather. The Railhead Smokehouse turned out tobe a bit soggy in September. I remember to our first HappyHour at the RPM Cafe last spring and was pleasantly surprisedwith the turnout and setting. It sounds like the Maverick returnto that location was even more popular in October. Theupcoming Happy Hour is shaping up to be something new anddifferent... we are going to The Abbey of Richardson. This willbe a new Happy Hour location for us and it looks like we willbe entertained by one of the Happy Hour hosts, DennisChamberlain. Dennis and his friend Stephanie perform at various local clubs, but this is a special presentation just for ourclub. I can't wait!

Twenty-eight hearty Mavericksbraved the storms and outra-geous traffic to attend the
happy hour at the RailheadSmokehouse in Colleyville onSeptember 11. I didn’t see anyCayennes, but on this particularevening I wish I’d owned one.
Most of us were the hardcoreconstituents, but we also had firsttime attendee Mitch Ballard from
Coppell. It is interesting to note that Mitch has been a Maverickmember since 2001, but this was his first time he’d attended oneof our events. He has previously been a member of the NewOrleans Region. He acquired his ’86 911 in 1996, and has spentthe last couple of years working on it. Now that it’s all fixed up,he said he isn’t inclined to take it to the track. But no problem –he just bought a 944 turbo for that purpose.
The Railhead is well-suited for our happy hours. The serv-ing line works well for us, with no waiters, and the food and bev-erage prices can’t be beat.
After the October Happy Hourat RPM Café in Irving, we’ll haveour first happy hour ever inRichardson on November 20. Thelocation will be at the RichardsonAbbey (at Coit and Campbell).
We’ll have some musical enter-tainment that evening (see ad onPage 2). The Abbey has an exten-sive menu, and it’s very reason-ably priced.

I am really excited that the Maverick Region was able toexpand their schedule of track events for next year. After mywonderful experience with this last event, I can’t wait to get backout to the track again with the Maverick Region next year.
Driver Education at MotorSport RanchBy Chris Irby
Irecently attended the last DE of 2003 for the Maverick Region,at MotorSport Ranch sponsored by Boardwalk Porsche. I haveattended events put on by other organizations before, but this
was my first time to drive with the Porsche Club. I felt like this eventwas run much better than those held by the other organizations.Our run groups always went out on time and in an orderly manner,the catered barbecue lunch was great, and I always felt safe while Iwas on the track during the run sessions. This event was the mostfun I have ever had at any of the track events that I attended.
My instructor, Mike Brodigan, was a great teacher and a real-ly big help to me on the track. He was able to show me a new linethat I had never run before. This new line felt much more com-fortable and much faster than the line that I had previouslylearned. I really appreciate all of the help he was able to providefor me.
On Saturday, Boardwalk Porsche provided cheeseburgers,hot dogs, and all the fixings after the track had cleared in theevening. The cookout was a great idea and also a great way to fin-ish a long day at the racetrack. Thank you: Larry Irby, Cindy Irby,Chris Alford, Archie VanScoonhoven, and Laura VanScoonhovenfor all of your time and efforts to provide a great dinner for all ofus at the track.
Cliff Blackshear was also at the event, on behalf of BoardwalkPorsche, to provide mechanical services to participants whenneeded. Cliff always seemed to be busy looking into several of thedifferent technical problems that arose throughout the weekend.I’m sure there are several participants who greatly appreciate allof the efforts and services put forth by Cliff throughout the week-end.
Since Hans Hoffmann, Cliff Blackshear, and myself were atthe event as members of Boardwalk Auto Group, there were sev-eral people, throughout the weekend, who showed us their appre-ciation for our support. It felt good to know that everyone reallyappreciated all of Boardwalk Porsche’s efforts to help theMaverick Region run an excellent event to finish up for 2003.
...I can’t wait to get back out on the trackagain with Maverick Region...

Walking the autocross course on Sunday morning was inter-esting, it took nearly 30 minutes to walk it once. This event alsogave Charlie an opportunity to roll out some of the equipmentbeing prepared for Parade ’04. The event was delayed slightly inthe morning, due to an oil leak on Rick Gonzales’ good looking914-6. We even had to modify the course to avoid the slick spots.After all was said and done, Mark Steele looked really smooth inhis 993 and took TToD honors. Since I usually don’t excel atautocrosses, there isn’t much to talk about my driving on Sunday.
Many thanks to everyone that showed up to make this a greatweekend and Mineral Wells wasn’t miserable for a change. Wewere all blessed with excellent weather for the entire weekend.Special thanks to Richard Diller, Tom Lang and the Gohlke’s forshowing up on Saturday, Richard for watching all of our cars andtrailers on Saturday night, and Richard (once again), Ed Mayo,Fran Ussery and our illustrious Prez Keith Olcha showing up onhis birthday (what was it, 50th?) for the autocross.

Ahhh, late September. When the north Texas weather starts tobecome bearable and fall is right around the corner. Oh,that’s right; I keep on forgetting that Texas doesn’t have four
seasons. In any case, it’s the time of year where the competitivedriving season for Maverick Region nears an end and we try to lurethe old (in experience, not age) leadfoots back out to Mineral Wells.The Leadfoot Reunion for 2003 consisted of Time Trial #5 onSaturday utilizing Course 2 and a huge course designed by RockyJohnson on Sunday for Autocross #6.
I loaded up my Boxster S on the new open trailer and towedout to Mineral Wells on Friday evening. Since I left Dallas a littlelate, I missed the gang having dinner at Baris. I also missed hit-ting cement poles sticking out of the ground, for which my trail-er fender (and my bank account) was very grateful. After a goodnight’s sleep at the Executive Palace and a greasy #1 breakfast atBraum’s, I headed out Mineral Ring to find out that a large groupof people had shown up before 7AM. On-site tech and Intro toTime Trial 101 overview both seemed to work out just fine andthe Driver’s Meeting commenced on time at 9AM.
I found out that my only competition in Class 7 was going tobe Tom Lang in his Boxster S. Well, it wasn’t going to be a day toget a very high Driver’s Index. Course 2 is the one with a 90°right-hander in the back left corner and the long infield. Quitegravelly as usual and that darn pothole seems to be getting largerfor the 90° right-hander. I just didn’t drive very aggressively and
my time lagged behind Rocky and Chuck. Currently, I am blam-ing my slower times on the 18” Kinesis wheels I bought fromRocky. Like my golf game, it has to be the equipment, not theoperator. The big highlight of Saturday was watching Cody Searsborrow the Gohlke’s 914 and rip out a TToD, beating out anexcellent time by Richard Diller. Before I forget, there was a conedown on every one of my afternoon hot laps, and Cody was infront of me. Did anyone call in those cones on Car Number ‘66’?
We had a large turnout for the dinner at Baris. I can’t repeatwhat Chuck had to say about my driving in this publication, butI agreed wholeheartedly (or should I have hit him over the headwith my anchovy pizza?). Rocky rode with me during Fun Runsand had very similar comments; I was losing a lot of time in thehairpin turn. Thanks guys, I appreciate the feedback.

The Guard seems to be on the verge of changing for nextyear’s GTS class, which has recently been dominated by theFactory Corvettes. ACEMCO Motorsports announced this week-end that they would be campaigning a new Saleen S7R in theentire 2004 American LeMans Series. Bobby Rahal also expressedinterest in campaigning a Ferrari next year in GTS.
The two Prodrive Ferrari 550 Maranellos originally swept theGTS honors, even lapping the rival Corvette, but the winning carof Tomas Enge was excluded from the results following the post-race inspection for failing the “stall test”. This is a procedure inwhich the engine’s primary air intake is blocked off and the car is
supposed to stall to verify that only air passing through the regulatory air restrictor is getting to the engine. It did not. Theother Ferrari passed the test and was awarded the win, with thetwo Corvettes elevated to 2nd and 3rd. Anyway, it looks as if theGTS class may have some welcome and needed competition forthe fans.
Sascha Maassen and Lucas Luhr ruled the GT category onceagain and claimed the GT class drivers’ championship for the 2ndstraight year. Sascha Maassen (#23- GT Porsche) took the leadearly in the race passing teammate Timo Bernhard (#24 – GTPorsche). “It was a Sunday afternoon cruise for me,” grinnedLucas Luhr because Sascha had done all the work. The only problem they had was their radio went out so they had to com-municate using the pit board. The #24 Alex Job Porsche 911 GT3RS was plagued with problems throughout the day. They had tochange both the battery and the alternator and eventually wereforced to end the day early. Placing second in GT was the Risi Competition GT Ferrari 360 Modena driven by RalfKelleners and Anthony Lazzaro. The White Lightning/PetersenMotorsports Porsche 911 GT3 RS driven by Johnny Mowlem, NicJonsson and Craig Stanton placed third.
The signs were all there. Crowds, noise, pits full of unimagin-ably expensive equipment and the wafting smell of TrackBurgers cooking over an open fire – but wait! Where is the
fog and cold? Not here! Thus began the first of the three days of theAmerican LeMans Race Series at Mazda Raceway at Laguna Secawith absolutely perfect weather.
The weekend began on Friday with a ceremony, cake anddedication of the “Rahal Straight”. Racing legend Bobby Rahalwas on hand while being honored by the naming of the backstraight (from the exit of Turn 6 up the hill and through the Turn7 kink to the entrance of the Corkscrew) as the “Rahal Straight”.The “Rahal Straight” joins the Andretti Hairpin – Turn 2 and theRainey Curve – Turn 9, as three named sections of the track (theCorkscrew being named for a particular movement – I think).Saturday was a copy of Friday, weather wise, and Steve Saleenmade the most of it by trotting out his new limited series roadcar, the Saleen S7. It was debuted at the Monterey Historics' acouple of weeks earlier where an MSRP of $395,000 is consideredchump change. Nice mid-engined 7 liter, 550 hp, 2750-poundrocket with guillotine doors that goes 150 mph sitting still.
The ALMS race was a real seat grabber.
As is usual at this track, a very crowded first turn disruptedmany teams’ strategies as cold tires and cold brakes coupled withan excess of adrenaline to produce multiple car contacts. In the P900 class Frank Beila in the No.1 Audi took control of the racefrom the start, although Johnny Herbert (Champion Audi #38)
chased him initially, he eventually fell back with boost problemscaused by a circuit breaker. Didn’t Bosch buy Lucas? Anyway,Herbert fiddled around with the spark box and reset the breaker.Not long after, in his haste to catch up to the leaders, he trashedthe car’s gearbox. The Champion crew changed the gearbox in 9 minutes. J.J. Lehto then set off on a truly remarkable drive and brought the 38 car back to a third place finish in class.Frank Biela and Marco Werner cruised to a victory with the 1 carJoest Racing/Infineon Audi R. The victory clinched the American LeMans Series P900 Manufacturers Championship forAudi – again.
In the P 675 class James Weaver and Butch Leitzinger earnedhonors despite James being helped off the course by slower traffic at the end of the first hour. “One of the GT Porsches

The SPEED GT and Grand Touring races were also held during the weekend. The SPEED World ChallengeChampionships feature a weight-equalization system, REWARDS(Rewarding of Equalizing Weight Assigned to Reduce DriveSensitivity) is based on each competitors finishing position ineach race (basic VooDoo). It is accomplished by adding orremoving ballast weight from the cars. The goal is to provideclose on-track competition between diverse varieties of cars. TheREWARDS weight is displayed on the windshield of each car(probably to impair visibility). This appears to have limited BillAuberlen and the other BMW team cars from running away andhiding from the rest of the class as they did at Infineon Raceway.Just don’t ask what they do if they have a driver change.

The Quattro advantage that this car hasdrives all four wheels and has a twin turbo V8, which is prettymuch out of the street car. It’s one of the only (unmodified)street engines running in this series.” Randy also compared theAudi to the Porsche 911, which he had raced for 5 years. He stated that the Porsche has power and speed that are addictive,but the Audi has the torque. This is the first year they are runningthe A6 and it is improving with every race. Unfortunately, theAudis encountered several problems during the race and couldnot keep pace with the Viper and the BMWs.
In SCCA SPEED Touring Car class, Bill Auberlen’s BMW 325i was accessed 200 pounds compared to his closestcompetitor’s 65 pounds. The 200 pounds did not prevent Billfrom winning the race.
The Pit Rat Investigates the Factory Sponsored vs. PrivateerStatus: Recently, ALMS announced that Alex Job Racing was losing their privateer status in the ALMS GT class. This meansthat the #23 and #24 Porsches are not eligible for each eventpurse. What does this mean to Alex Job Racing and should ALMStreat them any differently than the Champion Audi Team, theJoest Team, Panoz Team, or the Corvette Team? All of these teamsincluding the Alex Job Team have factory drivers. The Alex Jobteam does receive developmental parts from Porsche that still
need to be tested for quality and reliability. This is both good and bad. (They have had a head crack after one race.) They arefield-testing the parts, similar to a beta software release. It doessave the Job team from having to develop their own racing parts.Job does not receive any direct sponsorship from Porsche. If youlook in the Alex Job pit, there are no signs or decals that say“Porsche North America”, but you will see “Audi North America”in the Champion and Audi pits and “Corvette/General Motors”in the Corvette pit. These teams and the Panoz team receive factory parts, but they also receive the event purse. Financiallythis means the Alex Job will have to raise an additional $200,000each year from sponsors. Ain’t politics grand?
Finally - It’s not too late to become a legend and have a pieceof real estate named after you. First you have to be successful.This can be achieved by gaining success. So work hard and save some.
