I am delighted to be your CSGNAPresident for the next two years. Forthose of you who were fortunate toattend our annual conference inCalgary I am sure that you join withme in extending a heartfelt thank youto the Calgary Planning Committee.They were Evelyn Matthews –Chair;Deb Taggart, Deb Erickson,Doreen Reid, Sherry Pelensky,Meredith Wild, Diane Bourgeois-Burton, Maggie Alcazar, Janina Kravec

and Carol Kruger. While we werelearning, we also had fun. Some of useven became cowgirls and boys forawhile! CSGNA’s mandate is educationand to that end we are attempting toincrease our number of scholarships aswell as the dollar amount.I am happyto announce that SciCan is offering anew scholarship this year to supportthis mandate. I would like to thankSciCan for their support for education.Thanks to them one more pair of eyes

It is with a sad and a glad heartthat I leave my position as CSGNAPresident. During my time on the Na-tional Executive I have had the pleas-ure of working with some of the finestGI nurses in our country.

The words “I learn” hardly coversthe spectrum of knowledge I’ve ab-sorbed from every single person thatmakes up the CSGNA. No where elsecan one find the level of diversity ofperspectives, companionship and intel-lect that I have found here.

Our successes lie in our accom-plishments. The development of guide-lines, protocols, education tools,scholarships. Networking with otherNational and International organiza-

tions. Working and playing with ourfinancial and experiential supporters.Creating a lasting bond with the Ca-nadian Nurses Association. Develop-ing the first GI National CertificationExam, bringing us to a new level ofprofessionalism. Building a network ofcommunication with other GI nursesaround the globe, being able to findhelp when you need it. Pulling off someof the greatest annual conventions withthe teamwork and help of local Chap-ters. Expanding our horizons with TheGuiding Light and our website. Theseare the things we have worked so hardto achieve.

I have always been proud of sur-rounding myself with brilliant, ener-

getic, dedicated people, and for the past10 years I have been surrounded byyou. Each person I have met has beenan invaluable teacher to me. I have lit-tle use for ‘things’ in my life, but havegreat use and admiration for the peo-ple in my life. You (the people thatmake us what we are) will go on toachieve even more, and will always holda special place in my career and life-time.

I wish you (the CSGNA and all itsmembers) all the success you deserveand a healthy and happy career. Myparting words (yes, I know you’veheard it a million times), remember towork smarter, not harder.

A RANDOMIZED PROSPECTIVE TRIALCOMPARING DIFFERENT REGIMENS OFORAL SODIUM PHOSPHATE ANDPOLYETHYLENE GLYCOL-BASED LAVAGESOLUTION IN THE PREPARATION OFPATIENTS FOR COLONOSCOPY

Background: A recent Health Canada statementwarned physicians regarding the risk of electrolyte abnor-malities if more than 45 ml of oral sodium phosphate solu-tion was used in a 24-hour period in patients with or withoutrisk factors. The purpose of this study was to compare thetolerability, safety and cleansing ability of different regimensof oral fleet as well as a polyethylene glycol-based prepara-tion (Colyte) in healthy patients.

Methods: One hundred patients undergoing routinediagnostic colonoscopy were randomized to one of fourpurgative methods: 2 bottles of Fleet Phospho- Soda; 6hours apart (Group 1), 12 hours apart (Group 2), 24 hoursapart (Group 3), and 4 L of Colyte (Group 4). Bowel prepa-ration, patient satisfaction and electrolyte imbalances werethe measured endpoints. Continuous measures wereanalyzed using analysis of variance and categorical meas-ures were assessed using chi-square tests. Corrections formultiple comparisons were undertaken.

Results: Overall bowel preparation quality did notdiffer between groups although a trend favoring Group 2was observed. The Colyte group had significantly morecolonic fluid than the other groups (p=0.01). The qualitywas consistently worse in the right colon for all groups(p=0.74). There was no difference in overall satisfactionwith the regimens although Group 3 missed significantlymore days of work (p=0.015). Tolerability was not differ-ent among groups and no clinically significant adverse eventswere identified. The three oral fleet groups were independ-ently associated with a greater rise in serum phosphate thanseen with the Colyte group (p< 0.001). There were nodifferences in the increase in phosphate among the threeoral fleet groups. There was no difference in the decrease incalcium among all groups. The three oral fleet groups wereassociated with a greater decrease in potassium than theColyte group (p=0.002) but no significant difference wasnoted among oral fleet groups.

Conclusion: Given the absence of significant differ-ences in electrolyte changes among the three oral fleetgroups, Group 2 may be favored by a trend toward im-proved bowel preparation quality and shorter time off work.Although the Colyte group was associated with more co-lonic fluid, it was associated with significantly less electro-lyte changes. A STUDY TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT TOWHICH NURSES REPORT THATREFLECTIVE PRACTICE HAS IMPROVEDTHEIR CRITICAL THINKING ABILITY

Background: The College of Nurses of Ontario(CNO), as with other healthcare licensing bodies, is chargedwith ensuring that its members are competent in their pro-fessional practice. Reflective Practice (RP) is one methodchosen by CNO to comply with legislation and demon-strate accountability to all stakeholders. Purposeful reflec-tion is consistent with adult learning theory and can lead toa deeper understanding of issues, judgment and skill devel-opment. Additionally CNO has developed a tool that isaimed at assisting members in engaging in RP. Their toolfocuses on key attributes demonstrated by competent prac-titioners, including critical thinking and job knowledge.

Study Aim: To determine the extent to which nursesengage in RP, whether they use the CNO tool and whetherthey perceive that RP enhances their critical thinking (CT)ability.

Methods & Outcomes: A cross sectional survey wassent to 60 nurses who work in the gastroenterology depart-ments at a large teaching hospital. Thirty four (57%) wereanonymously returned. All respondents engage in RP withthe majority, 56% (n=19) citing RP as a yearly activity. Ofthe respondents, 24 (73%) report using the CNO tool forRP. CT improvement is difficult to evaluate from the re-sponses. Only 32% strongly agreed that RP improved nurs-ing practice. No significant differences were apparent whenstratified by education or experience.

Conclusions: CT is a complex process and is difficultto assess due to a lack of clear-cut performance measure-ments. All respondents engage in RP. RP seems to encour-age CT. Both concepts need to be better defined in order toexamine and explain the relationship between the two.Maria Cirocco, R.N., BScN, M.A.; Division of Gastroenterology, St.

PATIENT TEACHINGFOR PHOTODYNAMICTHERAPY OF THEESOPHAGUSPresenters: Darlene Pontifex RN, DebbieTaggart RN, BN, CGRN, CGN(C), Calgary,AB.

Background and Aim: Photodynamictherapy (PDT) uses nonthermal laser light fol-lowing the intravenous administration of aphotosensitizing drug to treat premalignantand malignant conditions, including those inthe esophagus.. Photodynamic therapy wasapproved in Calgary Health Region patientsfor the treatment of high-grade dysplasia andBarrett’s esophagus. Financial support for thefirst patients was provided by Axcan Pharma,supplier of Photophrin, the photosynthesizingdrug used. Developing a thorough toolproved more involved than originallythought. The aim is to provide patients withall pertinent information to make an informeddecision about this procedure and its requiredtemporary lifestyle changes.

Method: Other centres already perform-ing the procedure were contacted and will-ingly shared their expertise. These includedSt. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto, ON, JohnsHopkins, Baltimore, MD, and ThompsonCancer Survival Center, Knoxville, TN. TheAxcan Pharma rep was an invaluable resourceduring this process. A comprehensive patientteaching tool was then developed.

Conclusion: An educated patient is bet-ter prepared to make a decision for any treat-ment, including PDT. A tool developed usingall stakeholders attempts to address all con-cerns the patient might have with this evolv-ing and potentially, curative, technique.

PATIENT TEACHING FOR PHOTODYNAMICTHERAPY OF THE ESOPHAGUS

Background and Aim: Fear, anxiety, anduncertainty are some of the common feelingsbrought with patients to the Endoscopy unit.The purpose of the poster is to educate ourpatients on what a Gastroscopy is all about.We hope the information provided will helpto alleviate some of the anxiety they may befeeling.

Discussion: By combining simple in-structions and photos our colorful poster dis-cusses the Gastroscopy experience from startto finish. The poster provides the followinginformation.

A Gastroscope is a long flexible fiberopticvideo scope called an endoscope that allowsdirect visualization of your upper intestinaltrack (esophagus, stomach, and duodenum)through your mouth.

Pre procedure: Your Doctor will ask youto have nothing to eat or drink for at least 6hours prior. Your Doctor will instruct youregarding your medication.

During the procedure: Your Doctor maygive you a sedative through your I.V. to helpyou relax. You will remain conscious. Yourthroat will be sprayed with a local anesthetic.You will lie on your left hand side. The pro-cedure takes 5-10 minutes.

Post procedure: You may have nothingto eat or drink for one hour following. If youhave been sedated you will need someone todrive you home after you recover for aboutone hour. You will be asked to not drink alco-hol or drive for 24 hours.

A Gastroscopy is a safe procedure and avery valuable diagnostic tool. Complicationsare extremely rare but can occur. If you expe-rience any of the following symptoms, callyour Doctor immediately or go the nearest

emergency department: Severe abdominalpain, chest pain or shortness of breath, fever,persistent vomiting, vomiting blood, blackstools or unusual symptoms. Some things aGastroscopy can aid in diagnosing are; for-eign body, gastric ulcer, polyps, esophagealvaricies, acid reflux disease, and gastric can-cer. Some of the treatments that can be doneduring a Gastroscopy are; Endo clipping, scle-rotherapy, esophageal banding, foreign bodyretrieval, biopsy samples, and feeding tube(PEG) placement.

Conclusion: With the increased use ofthe Gastroscopy procedure to aid in diagnos-ing and treating, the word Gastroscopy is be-coming a common household name. With thehelp of education it is hoped that a well- in-formed patient will be more relaxed and com-fortable about the procedure, making theirexperience in Endoscopy a more pleasant one.

CANADA WEST DIRECTORREPORT

What a good conference theCalgary Chapter hosted! The programwas educational and the speakers wereexcellent, not to mention the great en-tertainment! How many of you whoattended will now consider looking atthe tongues of our patients! Or for thatmatter, ever consider an enteroscopy ona Peacock or looking at a frog in a G.I.sort of way? It was commendable,casual, enlightening, friendly and pro-ductive and such a great escape for the255 delegates to get away from the ratrace of our busy work lives and enjoy aweekend where we could celebrate theknowledge that we already have, buildon that and generate a good feeling forwhat we know and do well.

There is gaining interest in the Westfor developing new CSGNA Chapters;Red Deer. AB; Kamloops, BC; andNanaimo, BC.

Chapter had the opportunity to attendthe Annual meeting in Calgary. “Ourcowboy hats go off to the planningcommittee for a great meeting and awhole lot of fun.”

Their members are busy puttingthe final touches on their Annual Edu-cation Day taking place at the end ofOctober.

The Chapter welcomes SusanLatrace as their new Treasurer, and ex-tends a big thank-you to AlisonMacDonald for her many years of hardwork.

Vancouver Island Chapter President, Irene Ohly reports that

12 members from the Vancouver IslandChapter attended the Conference inCalgary. Their comments were “Whatan awesome Conference, CalgaryGroup. Thank you”.

They are planning a meeting onOctober 25th, 2004. They will be en-couraging and informing their mem-bers about the World Congress inMontreal and also supporting two whoare committed to write the Certifica-tion Exam in April 2005.

Okanagan ChapterKaren Parchmochuk, Chapter

President, reports that three of theirmembers enjoyed the Conference inCalgary. The Chapter will meet in thenext few weeks to review some of theevents and topics presented in Calgary.Members from the group attended tworecent presentations at the KelownaGeneral Hospital. The first was onOstomy Care Updates and the secondon “Street and Designer Drugs.”

Vancouver Regional ChapterAdriana Martin, President, reports

that the Vancouver Regional Chapterwill be meeting soon to update theirmembers on the World Congress. TheChapter will also host an EducationDay, likely in the Spring 2005. 10members enjoyed the hospitality shownby the Calgary Chapter.

The Vancouver Regional Chapterwould like to salute Helene Parmiter, along time CSGNA and SGNA mem-ber, who has just retired from nursingat St Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver, whereshe worked in the G.I. Clinic -Endos-copy for over 25 years. Helene is wellknown as an icon in the field for shar-ing her knowledge and her generositytowards students, new nurses to endos-copy, Vendors, Physicians, the localChapter and to CSGNA Membersacross Canada. Enjoy your well-de-served retirement, Helene!!

Calgary ChapterEvelyn Mathews, Chapter presi-

dent and Calgary Conference Chairreports that the conference planningcommittee met for dinner at “Laviena”on October 13, they thoroughly en-joyed the evening as they celebrated thesuccess rather than the planning of theconference!

The next Chapter meeting will beheld on November 4. Dates and topicsfor future educational sessions will bedecided. Perhaps Dr. Whiteside willhave other case presentations that hewould like to share with them!

Manitoba ChapterChapter President, Jennette

McCalla came away from the Confer-ence with list of highlights that she wasable to share with the Manitoba Chap-ter members. They have started to fo-cus on the World Congress. JanetShymanski, reports that the memberswere asked to consider the Election ofOfficers for the new Executive term.Dr. Chris Buller, a Practitioner of Tra-ditional Chinese Medicine presented aunique and interesting talk.

Their next meeting will be held inKenora, Ontario, and members are veryexcited to attend that meeting.

Edmonton ChapterThe Edmonton Chapter was de-

lighted to send a good representationof their group to the conference inCalgary. They continue to keep theChapter alive with their monthly meet-ings and educational sessions.

OUTGOING CANADA CENTRESTATEMENT

My second year as CSGNA Direc-tor Centre produced a continuation ofthe challenges faced in previous year.The satisfaction gained from CSGNAaccomplishments was tempered by thefrustrations generated from a lack ofcooperation/enthusiasm of members atlarge in the resolution of some chal-lenging issues: volunteer to work onBoard at chapters level; membershiprenewal. We are constantly looking for

resolutions to improve and enhance thesituations; your suggestions will bewelcome. Nevertheless, looking ahead,CSGNA board has again set some ob-jectives and strategies, which we feel,will contribute towards the enhance-ment of CSGNA.

The new Montreal Chapter’s grow-ing pains are slowly getting behind usas the chapter matured, I believe theyare well positioned to achieve stabilityas a chapter in Quebec.

My term with CSGNA as Direc-tor Centre honoured me with the privi-lege to learn a great deal, gainedpersonal growth and then some frommy fellow esteem board members andyou the members. As my term ends, Iwould like to take this opportunity toacknowledge the contribution, timeand effort of my colleagues on theBoard. Their commitment over theyears towards managing and improv-ing our society is greatly appreciated. Iam sure the Board will continue to dothe best they know how for CSGNA.

We are working on study modulewhich we hope to release before the endof this year. Look on our website forupdates.

Our reprocessing manual on flex-ible endoscopes has become verypopular and we would like to promoteit so that we all practice the same wayacross Canada.

We will also revise the orientationmanual to reflect our current practice.This manual will be helpful for train-ing endoscopy nurses. This is necessaryto maintain high standards of care forour clients.

We will be very involved with theWorld Congress international confer-ence which will take place in Montrealon September 10-14 2005 .We will be

During the past two years, we haveseen changes to our website. Not onlyhas the look changed but there is moreinfo available to members. The regis-tration form for the past two confer-ences has been available to downloadand there is a link to the World Con-gress of Gastroenterology to be heldin Montreal in 2005. Several nurseswere able to network with others writ-ing the Certification exam and we willinclude Certification Support as a linkagain this year. CANADA EAST REPORTFor those of us fortunate enough

to have attended tha National CSGNAconference in Calgary, what a wonder-ful experience! A fully packed programwith excellent topics and speakers.Hats off to the planning committee ona job well done. I would like to thankeveryone who supported the CSGNAmarketplace. The monies raised

through 50/50 draws, cookbook andluggage tags will go into the CSGNAscholarship fund. Our goal for the fu-ture is to see an increase in the amountand number of scholarships.

Newfoundland ChapterThe Atlantic GI meeting held in St.

John’s in June saw 86 delegates includ-ing physicians, nurses and sponsers. Alltopics were well presented with the casepresentations as usual were found tobe the most interesting. From the nurs-ing prospective, we were fortunate tohave two guest speakers, CathyMcDonald, from Bard, gave a talk onGastrostomy feeding and nutritionalsupport. Michele Paquette, EducationDirector with the CSGNA talked oninfection control in the GI setting.Informative presentations with plentyinteraction. As short business meet-ing was also held, an update of futureand current CSGNA activities werediscussed. The 2005 Atlantic GI meet-ing, will be held in Lunenburg, NovaScotia. WATCH FOR FURTHERDETAILS!

The next business meeting of theNewfoundland Chapter is scheduledfor October 19, 2004. The agendaincludes, the election of a new execu-tive, a report on the Calgary confer-ence and discussion on the upcomingWorld Congress being held in Mon-treal.

1. REVIEW AND ADOPTIONOF AGENDA:A motion was passed to adopt theagenda after being reviewed. Kay/Belinda

3. BYLAWS: Changes to the bylawswere accepted as voted in the 2004annual report.

4. NEWSLETTER: Leslie Bearsswill be taking over as the Newslet-ter editor Kay will help with thenext issue of the Guiding light.Pentax is the current Sponsor forthe Guiding Light until December2005. Kay/ Leslie will look backand put together a history ofGSGNA form it conception to thepresent date.

5. EDUCATION: Education Direc-tor has concerns about receivingone chapter report for chapter edu-cation event. Michelle will email re-minder notice to the ChapterPresident in May to emphasize theimportance of notification of allchapter education events. Re-minder notices will also be postedin the June edition of The Guid-ing Light. Some of the chapters arenot charging for education events.The chapter package states thereshould be a charge of $15-$25. Themoney raised from this event could

go into the education fund to sup-port chapter members to attendannual conference. Nominationform for GI nurse recognitionaward will be posted in The Guid-ing Light. Nomination will be sub-mitted in writing to CSGNAeducation director March 15th ofeach year. A scoring system will de-termine the successful candidate.

6. CERTIFICATION UPDATE:Certification – 94 registered and 86passed the test. The same exam willbe administered next year; it willbe reviewed in the third year. Thefailure rate was comparable withother specialties.

7. PUBLIC RELATIONS: JenniferBelbeck will be taking over as thenew Public Relation Director. Inher new role she is the coordinatorfor the annual National meetingand is responsible to liaise with thelocal coordinator and the vendors.She will also be responsible forupdating the website to keep themembers informed of all theCSGNA events locally and nation-ally.

8. PRACTICE: updates on theBronchoscopy Guidelines andNurse assisted Sigmoidoscoy withreference from the recent articlefrom the WHO and infection con-trol articles, which includes SARSprotection. Position statement willbe posted on the website soon.

9. MARKET PLACE: 50/50 drawwill be held at nutrition breaksduring the conference. Luggagetags are sold at $3 each and 2 for$5. 00. Cookbooks will be sold at$10.00.

10. VENDOR MEETING PRES-ENTATION BY Lorie: This yearFriday evening at the annual con-ference was not booked to give themembers free time to explore thecity. Several Sponsors are entertain-ing groups of nurses. We need toreinforce the objectives from theNational perspective. We need toincrease the attendance and theamount of scholarship that we of-fer. Currently we have 12 scholar-ships @ $700 each. We wish toincrease the amount to $1000. Thescholarship fund is not self-suffi-cient.

11. WORLD CONGRESS 2005:Carolyn Bernaro, Executive direc-tor of SIGNEA was introduced.She is very excited that Canada ishosting the World congress in col-laboration with CSGNA. They areexpecting about 1000 GI nursesfrom around the world. The regis-tration fee for the conference willbe $300 (US). We are invited tothe opening ceremonies andCanada Night. There will be acharge of $50 per person forCanada Night. Registration for theconference includes the nurse’sconference only. There are fourhotels blocked for the Nurses.Rooms will be assigned to nursesautomatically when registered asCSGNA or SIGNEA member

9th Education Meeting of the Society of InternationalGastroenterology Nurses and Endoscopy assistants (S.I.G.N.E.A.)

this meeting will take place, in cooperation with the Cana-dian Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates.(C.S.G.N.A.). Hundreds of gastroenterology nurses and GIassociates internationally will be exploring the many facetsof nursing practice that make a difference to the health out-comes of the patients we care for in our endoscopy and GIdepartments.

The Scientific Program will address standards of prac-tice for gastroenterology units, management concepts, stateof the art procedures, infection control, nursing research,writing for publication, nutrition, holistic and alternativetherapies, drug therapy designing and staffing GI units, ethi-cal issues in gastroenterology and evidence based practicejust to mention a few of the topics. All topics will be cur-rent and relevant to present and future issues in gastroen-

terology. A bevy of international speakers will provide aninteractive atmosphere and address global aspects of GI.Nurses will be involved in breakout sessions of various top-ics and there will be live endoscopy sessions from theWellesley Endoscopy course being held in conjunction withthe WCOG.Objectives of this course:• To encourage exchange of information with colleagues• To provide current information in the field of gastroen-

terology• To present information about current and emerging

diagnostic and therapeutic techniques in gastroenterol-ogy and their application to the art and science of nurs-ing.

A QUESTION OF UNIT ORSHARED MEMBERSHIP

Earlier this year, a member contacted me to ask if mem-bership could be “shared” or if a “unit” membership hadever been considered by CSGNA. The concern was thatmembers in outlying areas find it difficult to attend CSGNAChapter events and often the day’s work is not finished bythe time an evening meeting would start. This means thatmembers have to take turns going to Chapter events. Mem-bers had expressed a concern that they are not getting thefull benefit of their membership. These queries were takento our National Executive.

At our CSGNA executive meeting prior to the AnnualConference this past September, membership options be-yond the individual level was discussed. A comparison of10 nursing specialties was done. Among the specialties welooked at were the Canadian Association of NeuroscienceNurses, Canadian Association of Hepatology Nurses, Ca-nadian Association of Critical Care Nurses and CSGNA.

As a result of our research, we found no other nursingassociation that offered membership differing from our own.All of these specialized practice organizations offered anannual membership to individuals only. What did come tolight was how reasonable our annual membership fee is.Other specialties annual fees are, in some cases, twice whatours is.

The National Executive decided that our membershipwould remain available on an individual basis only. This isin keeping with other nursing specialties.

CSGNA provides its membership with educational sup-port through the newsletter, the Standards of Practice, Po-sition Statements and Guidelines, manuals for unitorientation and scope reprocessing, preparation for certifi-cation, scholarships, and member-only rates for educationalmeetings and our annual conference. Above all, CSGNAoffers a network of individuals whose interest is in the ad-vancement of gastroenterology nursing.

A number of our Chapters cover a large geographicalarea. When planning meetings, Chapter Executive need tokeep in mind that many members have a distance to traveland evening events may not always be the best time for allChapter members. Please consider the time of year whenplanning an event. Travel can be very difficult for many ofus, in many areas of this country in winter months.

The membership year runs to June 30th annually. If youfail to renew your membership by June 30th, you will beconsidered a “new” member - your years of membershipseniority will be lost. Membership seniority is a large factorwhen applying for CSGNA scholarships.

CSGNA’s strength and growth is dependent on its mem-bership. Let’s all work together to see that our associationmeets the needs of all our members.

MEET THE OTHER CARSEN…Carsen I call him.His registered name is Fever River

Brad and he’s a “Red” 4-year-old Re-tired Racing Greyhound from theUnited States. He was born on July 1st,2000, Canada day but he only becamea Canadian on September 18th, 2004.

New this year to CSGNA, Ithought I would call my foster dogsomething appropriate, and introduceother members to this wonderfulbreed. Carsen fit the bill perfectly.

Greyhounds, gentle in nature andusually quiet do not make good guarddogs. They tend to be “cat like” in thehouse and shed very little. They are notprone to any health problems like manyof the other large breeds except theirteeth do need brushing. They are proneto tarter build up probably because oftheir diets previously fed to them frompuppy hood and during racing, beforethe foster program.

They are one of the oldest breedsknown to man (8000 years old) andthe only breed mentioned in the bible.

The Egyptians worshiped them likea god, considered them a family mem-ber and often were placed in the familytombs at the time of their death (pres-ently greyhounds live to about 12-14years old).

These 40 mile per hour couch po-tato’s are usually 2-5 years old whenthey come to Canada and the only waysI know to adopt one is through a res-cue group or directly from a track inthe U.S. The group I belong to is lo-cated in southern Ontario, howeverthere are local groups who do this allover Canada and the U.S. It is esti-mated that, even with the adoptionprograms in North America, there are10,000-20,000 greyhounds destroyedin the U.S. every year.

As a part-time dog trainer, as wellas working in Endoscopy part-time, Ifind fostering these dogs and watch-ing them learn about the world as weknow it, a wonderful and rewardingexperience.

They know nothing about life inour world. Stairs, dog food, traffic,other kinds of dogs, play, homes, andwhen not to pee in them! Differentkinds of flooring are all new experiencesto them. Surprisingly they learn ratherquickly. Thankfully the housebreakingis really a lot easier than you wouldexpect. As a foster home you teach allof it. You do not have to be a trainer tofoster, just willing to put in some timeand a little effort.

Sure, sometimes after 3 weeks (orlonger) of having them in your homeit’s heartbreaking to let them leave butwhen you see them a year later, (andquite often you do) they remember youand are really excited to see you. Theyare happy and healthy and alive. It allbecomes worthwhile. A life was savedbecause I fostered.

I love this breed. They are lowmaintenance, good-natured, clean,smart, and eager to please. This is anabsolutely perfect dog for a first timedog owner.

CSGNA PURPOSE STATEMENTThe CSGNA carries out its mission byproviding opportunities for network-ing, education, and communication forits members.

CSGNA GOALSNursing Practice:The CSGNA is committed to encour-aging members to achieve high stand-ards of care in daily practice byestablishing standards of practice.Networking:The CSGNA encourages discussionand exchange of experience betweennurses through the formation of Chap-ters, newsletter publication, an annualconference and website.Education:The CSGNA keeps its members abreastof current developments in the field ofgastroenterology through seminars andan annual education conference. The name of the organizationshall be the “Canadian Societyof Gastroenterology Nursesand Associates” (CSGNA).Hereinafter the word “Society”

shall refer to “Canadian Societyof Gastroenterology Nursesand Associates.” The wordsOfficer(s), Board and Exec-utive is used interchangeably.

2.0 PURPOSEThe purpose shall be to uniteinto an organization, personsengaged in any capacity in thefield of GastroenterologyNursing in Canada (i.e. in anyof the ten provinces and threeterritories).

3.0 GOALSThe goals of the society shallbe to promote education andquality of patient care by:

3.1 Setting standards of practice bydeveloping guidelines andposition statements.

3.2 Developing educationalprograms.

3.3 Encouraging study, discussion,exchange of informationrelated experience and practice.

4.0 HEAD OFFICE4.1 Until changed in accordance

with the Act, The Head Officeof the corporation shall be inthe city of the current Treasur-er/Membership chairperson.

4.2 The Corporate Seal of theSociety shall be held insafekeeping by the officerdesignated by the Executive forfiscal year.

5.0 MEMBERS5.1 There shall be three classes of

individual members consistingof active, affiliate, and lifetime.

5.2 Active – shall be comprised ofRegistered Nurses or otherHealth Care Professionalsengaged in full or part-timeGastroenterology Nursing orEndoscopy Nursing in clinical,supervisory, teaching, researchor administrative capacity.

They are eligible to vote. Onlyregistered nurses may holdoffice.

5.3 Affiliate – shall be comprisedof Nurses, Health CareProfessional/persons engagedin activities relevant to the fieldof Gastroenterology but notcurrently engaged in gastro-enterology Nursing or Endo-scopy Nursing. They are noteligible to vote or hold office.

5.4 Lifetime – any member,deemed to have contributedsubstantial time and efforttowards the advancement ofthe CSGNA may be nom-inated for a lifetime mem-bership. All past Presidents willbe awarded lifetime mem-bership at the end of their termin office.Nominations for other lifetimeawards may be submitted byany member of the CSGNA tothe National Executive.Lifetime awards are to bevoted on by the general mem-bership in attendance at theannual business meeting.Lifetime membership willinclude voting privileges.

5.5 Membership is not trans-ferable. All members shallreceive all Publications fromthe Association.

5.6 The term “Associates”, in thetitle of the Society, refers toCSGNA members who are notqualified as Registered Nurses.

5.7 Any member may withdrawfrom the corporation bydelivering to the corporationa written resignation andlodging a copy of same withthe secretary of the cor-poration.

6.0 FEESA membership fee will berequired from the active andaffiliate members annually onJune 1st and will becomedelinquent after July 1st of thatyear.

6.1 Membership shall lapseautomatically as of July 1st ifdues have not been received bythe National Treasurer by thattime.

6.2 The Executive shall determineannual dues payable and shallgive appropriate notice tomembers.

6.3 Members will be notified ofany change in membershiprequirements by the regionaldirectors and in “The GuidingLight” publication.

6.4 Members of the Executive donot pay any dues while inoffice.

6.5 No membership fee is requiredfrom a lifetime member.

6.6 All dues are payable in Cana-dian funds to the “CanadianSociety of GastroenterologyNurses and Associates”

7.0 MEETINGS7.1 The annual business meeting

shall be held in conjunctionwith the annual conference.

7.2 At the annual business meetingthe results of voting forExecutive officers open forelection will be announced.

7.3 Reports from selectedExecutive Board members willbe presented, as well as bylawamendments and any otherbusiness deemed of nationalconcern.

7.4 Written notice of the annualbusiness meeting shall beincluded in the informationabout the annual conference.

7.5 The Board of Directors shallmeet face to face at least twicea year and by teleconferenceand/or Email as deemednecessary by the board.

8.0 QUORUMThe quorum shall consist ofthe majority of memberspresent.

9.0 ELECTION OF OFFICE9.1 All members eligible to vote

will be informed of theNational Board positionsavailable and the deadline forthe nominations via the firstGuiding Light publicationafter the annual businessmeeting. Nominations mustreach the NominationsCommittee by May 1st.

9.2 A slate of candidates for officesopen in that fiscal year shall bemailed to the Active mem-bership one hundred andtwenty (120) days before theannual meeting.

9.3 Ballots are to be returned tothe Chair of the NominatingCommittee ninety (90) daysbefore the annual meeting.

9.4 Each member has one vote peroffice.

9.5 Votes will be tabulated andrecorded in the minutes of theAnnual Business meeting.

9.6 The successful candidates willbe announced to the mem-bership at the annual businessmeeting.

9.7 If there is only one nominationfor an office by the deadline fornominations the officer iselected by acclamation.

9.8 Successful candidates will benotified as soon as possibleafter counting of the ballots inorder that they may make thenecessary arrangements toattend the Annual Conference.

9.9 If no one is nominated for anoffice, nominations will beaccepted from the floor at theannual business meeting. Ifmore than one nomination, asecret ballot will be held duringthe Annual Business Meeting.

9.10 As the first meeting of the newExecutive is extremely impor-tant and sets the tone for thewhole year, this meetingshould be scheduled to takeplace in conjunction with theannual conference andmeeting.

9.11 Transfer of duties from retiringExecutive to newly electedExecutives shall take place atthe time of the annual CSGNAconference.

9.12 Officers elected must haveserved the association in somecapacity the preceding twoyears.

9.13 Ballots will be kept by theChair of the Nominationscommittee.

9.14 A motion to destroy the ballotswill be made by said chair-person during the AnnualBusiness meeting.

9.15 The ballots will be destroyedonly after the motion is carriedby a show of hands from themembers present.

9.16 If a motion for a recount of anyoffice is made and carriedtellers will be chosen from themembers present prior to theend of the annual conferenceand the results announced tothe membership.

10.0 EXECUTIVE10.1 The executive of the Asso-

ciation shall include President,President Elect, Secretary,Treasurer, Membership Direc-tor, Education Director,Practice Director, NewsletterEditor, Canada West Director,Canada Center Director, andCanada East Director andPublic Relations Director.

10.2 The Executive offices are opento all active members of theAssociation. The Executiveofficers shall have the powersand authority as described toperform their expected offices.

10.3 All National Executive mem-bers shall attend all Face toFace and Annual Conventions.Exemptions shall be consid-ered by the National Board.

11.0 TERMS OF OFFICE –11.1 The President shall serve for

two (2) years11.2 An election to fill the office of

President Elect will be heldevery two (2) years.

11.3 The President elect willautomatically accede when thePresident’s term ends (2) twoyears.

11.4 He/She shall become actingPresident and assume theduties of the office in the eventof the President’s absence.

11.5 The President-Elect must haveserved the Association in somecapacity prior to being electedto this office.

11.6 Persons elected Secretary,Treasurer, Membership direc-tor, Education director, andNewsletter editor, shall holdoffice for two years or untiltheir successor is elected.

11.7 No persons can be elected toconsecutive terms as President.

11.8 No officer of the Executive canhold more than one office at atime.

11.9 There shall be no restrictionupon the number of termswhich other officers may beelected to succeed themselves.

11.10 Elections to fill the offices ofSecretary, Education Director,Treasurer, Canada East Direc-tor, Canada West Director, andPractice Director will be heldin odd numbered years.

11.11 Elections to fill the offices ofNewsletter Editor, Member-ship Director, Canada CenterDirector and Public RelationsDirector will be held in evennumbered years.

11.12 Upon retiring from office, allofficers shall deliver all records,correspondence or other pro-perty of the Association totheir successor within thirty(30) days.

12.0 VACANCIES12.1 Whenever the office of

President becomes vacant, thePresident Elect shall succeed tothe Presidency for thecompletion of the unexpiredterm and continue in office foranother full term. If the officeof President becomes vacantwhile there is a vacancy in theoffice of President-Elect,officers shall appoint an actingPresident from the presentBoard members who shallserve until the end of that term.A special election shall be heldto fill the office of President-Elect.

12.2 If an elected member resignsor can no longer fulfill his/herduties before the term of officeis completed, the Executiveshall appoint an interimreplacement until the annualmeeting, when an election cantake place.

12.3 The person appointed shouldbe the first runner up from theelection, when possible.

12.4 If an officer should resignbefore completion of theirterm a written resignation shallbe sent to the President at leastfourteen (14) days prior to theresignation date.

13.0 DUTIES OF THE EXEC-UTIVE – Duties shall includethe following and may bemodified as deemed necessaryby the Board to meet the needsof the members.

THE PRESIDENT SHALL:13.1 Serve as an official repre-

sentative and spokesperson forthe society.

13.1.1 Represent CSGNA missions,goals and positions to variouspublics.

13.1.2 Manage daily affairs of theorganization.

13.1.3 Lead the National Board ofDirectors.

13.1.4 Chair Nominating Com-mittee.

13.1.5 Provide mentoring to CSGNAleaders.

13.1.6 Submit and present an Annualreport to the membership atthe Annual Business meeting,and sends it to the member viathe National Secretary sixty(60) days prior to the meeting.

13.1.7 Submit a report per issue ofThe Guiding Light.

13.1.8 Chair and prepare agenda forthe National Board Meetingsand Annual Business meeting.

13.1.9 Travel commitment as deemednecessary by the Board.

13.1.10Attend the SGNA Conferenceand the House of Delegates.

13.1.11Encourage vision and growthof the organization by fos-tering education opportunitiesand position statementformation.

13.1.12Be an ex-officio on all standingcommittees.

13.1.13Serves a two (2) year term witha four (4) year commitment tothe executive.

DUTIES OF THE PRESIDENT-ELECTTHE PRESIDENT-ELECT SHALL:13.2 Accede to the Presidency when

the President’s terms ends.13.2.1 Become acting President and

assume the duties of the officein the event of the President’sabsence, disability or resig-nation.

13.2.2 Communicate regularly withthe President as deemednecessary.

13.2.3 Learn the affairs of theAssociation.

13.2.4 Accompany the President toSGNA Annual Conference andattend the House of Delegatessession.

13.3.6 Issue notices of meetings,activities, and conferences to allmembers

DUTIES OF THE TREASURERTHE TREASURER SHALL:13.4.0 Be responsible for collecting of

fees from the members anddeposit their fees in a charteredbank or trust company.

13.4.1 Maintain a bank account forthe Society with a minimumof three signing officersappointed and two signaturesrequired for any transaction.

13.4.2 Make such payments as areauthorized by the Association.

13.4.3 Maintain records of expen-ditures of the Association.

13.4.4 Submit to the Executive, sixty(60) days prior to the annualmeeting, a Treasurer’s reportfor publication in the annualreport.

13.4.5 Maintain financial records ofchapter educational sessionsand annual reports.

13.4.6 Automatically becomes amember of the Annual Con-ference Planning Committee.

13.4.7 Arrange for an Annual Auditto be conducted by a CharteredAccountant. This is to be anoutside firm/person indepen-dent of the CSGNA or personstherein.

13.4.8 Report on the Auditorsaccounts of the Association tothe members in the Annualreport and at the AnnualBusiness meeting.

13.4.10 The Treasurer shall be cus-todian of the seal of thecorporation, which she shalldeliver only when authorizedby a Resolution of the boardof directors to do so and tosuch person or persons as maybe named in the resolution.

14.0 COMPENSATION14.1 All CSGNA financial requests

over $200.00 must be ap-proved by (2) Executives, oneof which shall be the treasurer.

14.2 Verification of the appropriatereceipts and the appropriateuse of CSGNA funds must bepresent before reimbursement.

14.3 No reimbursement shall bemade without appropriatereceipts.

14.4 The expenses of the outgoingexecutive will include thoseincurred at the Annual Con-ference at which their term ofoffice is complete.

14.5 The expenses of the incomingExecutive will be paid byCSGNA at the Annual Con-ference where Executivechangeover occurs.

14.6 All National CSGNA Execu-tive shall be exempt frompaying to attend CSGNANational Conference.

14.7 A maximum number of ten(10) registration fees will beawarded to the Annual Confer-ence Planning Committee.

15.0 DISCIPLINARY ACTION15.1 Members shall be subject to

reprimand, censor, suspensionor expulsion by a two-thirdsvote of the active members forviolation of the Constitutionand Bylaws or the Charter.

15.2 No such action shall be takenagainst a member until specificcharges have been filed.

15.3 Members reprimanded, cen-sored, suspended or expelledunder the provisions as statedmay within thirty (30) daysafter notification of suchaction, request the Executive ofthe CSGNA to review anyquestions of law or procedureinvolved therein.

15.4 Executive members of chaptersare subject to the same rulesof compensation, disciplineand removal as the NationalExecutive.

15.5 A “conflict of interest” shall bedefined as any situation orpotential situation where anindividual may gain or isperceived to gain, directly orindirectly from discussion onvoting on said matters.

15.6 Any CSGNA member on acommittee or in an Executiveposition, finding themselves ina conflict of interest, willremove themselves fromvoting on said matters.

15.7 Any CSGNA member whodoes not identify a conflict ofinterest, remains as a part ofthe discussion and/or votingprocess, may be asked to resignfrom the said committee and/or Executive position follow-ing a review by the NationalExecutive.

16.0 REMOVAL16.1 Officers elected by the

membership may be removedby two-thirds vote of the activemembers present at the AnnualMeeting.

16.2 The successor will be therunner up in the previouselection and remains in officeuntil the end of the stated term.When there is no runner up orthe runner up is not availableto take office, nominations willbe taken from the floor. If morethan one nomination, a secretballot will be held during theAnnual Business Meeting.

17.0 PUBLICATION17.1 The association shall publish

three newsletters annuallyentitled “The Guiding Light”.

17.2 It shall be sent to all membersWinter, Spring, and Fall.

17.3 The Editor is responsible forcompiling a comprehensivepertinent communiqué anddistributing it free to allmembers in good standing.

18.0 EDUCATIONAL EVENTS18.1 For any CSGNA Educational

program an agenda must besent by the Chapter Secretaryto the Regional Director six(6) weeks before the event fora day conference and two (2)weeks before an eveningseminar.

18.2 Upon completion of anyCSGNA Educational Programa report entitled CSGNAEducational Post ProgramFinancial Report (form 01)must be submitted by theChapter Treasurer to theNational Treasurer within one(1) month of the event.

18.3 The Chapter President mustensure that appropriaterecords, financial statementsand reimbursements aresubmitted to the NationalTreasurer.

18.4 Chapter treasurer shall submit,twenty-five percent (25%) ofall profits, to the nationaltreasurer after each event tosupport scholarships.

18.5 An extenuating circumstanceneeding an extension must beobtained from the NationalTreasurer and President.

18.6 Any CSGNA member host-ing/conducting an educationalor fund raising event utilizingthe CSGNA title shall have abank account requiring two(2) signing officers, bothmembers of the CSGNA.

18.7 The remainder of profits raisedby chapters at CSGNAdesignated events are to beused for needs as determinedby its membership.

18.8 The remainder of profits raisedby CSGNA members shall beplaced in a bank to organizefuture CSGNA educationalmeetings, supporting chapterformation costs, and to pay forbank account expenses. (i.e.service charges).

18.9 The national CSGNA shallremit ten percent (10%) of theprofits from the AnnualConference meeting to theCSGNA chapter hosting theevent.

18.10 All CSGNA chapters willsubmit an annual educationalsummary to the EducationalChair by June 30th.

18.11 The fiscal year will run fromJanuary 1st to December 31st.

19.0 STANDING COMMITTEES19.1 BYLAWS COMMITTEE19.1.1 Shall consist of the President-

Elect, President, Secretary, andthree Directors. One Directorfrom each region; East,Centre, and West. The com-mittee shall meet at the SpringBoard meeting, by telecon-ference and/or Email if deemednecessary to complete thebylaws revisions.

19.1.2 Shall be chaired by thePresident-Elect.

19.1.3 Reviews bylaws and allrecommendations for bylawrevisions submitted bymembers annually and makeamendments as necessary.

19.1.4 All revisions will be presentedto the board of directors at thespring board meeting forapproval before submission tothe membership for a vote.

19.2 NOMINATINGCOMMITTEE

19.2.1 Shall consist of the Presidentand three members at large.

19.2.2 It shall be chaired by thePresident.

19.2.3 Duties: recommend candidate(s) for each office. Each nom-inee must be a member ingood standing and mustsignify his/her consent to standfor office.

19.2.4 Mail ballots to the member-ship.

19.2.5 Count the ballots andannounce successful candidatesto the membership at theannual business meeting.

19.2.6 Report tabulations to theExecutive for recording in theminutes.

19.4.3 Duties: liaise with vendors,promote, encourage, maintainrelationships, maintains accur-ate records of vendor recog-nition, review recommen-dations of vendor evaluationsat the end of each conference,makes recommendations tothe executive at the springmeeting, meets annually.

19.5 FINANCE COMMITTEE19.5.1 Shall be chaired by the

treasurer19.5.2 Shall consist of Treasurer, one

East and one West Director.19.5.3 Duties: reviews and audits

financial statements, monitorsfinancial policies, recommendsbudget, meets as is necessary,reports at each meeting.

20.0 SPECIAL COMMITTEES20.1 The Executive, at a general

meeting, may appoint a specialcommittee and give it thepower as necessary to dis-charge its duties.

20.2 A written report shall besubmitted to the Executiveupon completion of the specialcommittee’s duties.

21.0 CHAPTERS21.1 Definition: a chapter is a

geographical area (city, region,or town) where ten (10) ormore active members reside.

21.2 They may apply to the Execu-tive for charter as chapter.

21.3 Mandate: a chapter shall, inconjunction with its RegionalDirectors, coordinate educa-tional activities and functionsof the CSGNA within itsdesignated area.

21.4 Criteria for formation ofchapters: A minimum of ten(10) active members mustapply to the National Mem-bership Director.

21.5 The local group and theRegional Director will deter-mine geographical boundariesfor the chapter.

21.6 Upon request the MembershipDirector will supply a list of allactive members in the region.

21.7 The local group must call fornominations form that list andnotify all members of ameeting and election.

21.8 The number of officersrequired for the chapterexecutive shall initially bedetermined by the local groupand henceforth by theExecutive of the chapter.

21.9 The National MembershipDirector and the NationalSecretary must be notifiedwithin thirty (30) days of theelection results and of the titleof the chapter.

21.10 The name CSGNA mustappear within the title of thechapter. (e.g. The EdmontonChapter of the CSGNA)

22.0 CHAPTER DUTIES22.1 Promote the Association in its

area and encourage member-ship.

22.2 Be sensitive to the concernsand problems of its area andcommunicate them to itsDirectors for discussion at theNational Executive.

22.3 Tabulate the activities of itsarea and submit details to itsDirectors for inclusion in theNewsletter and AnnualReport.

22.4 Elect officers to include pre-sident, secretary and treasurer.

22.5 Officers shall hold office fortwo (2) years or until theirsuccessors are elected.

22.6 There shall be no restrictionsupon the number of terms towhich an officer may be electedto succeed themselves.

22.7 No officer may hold more thanone office at a time.

22.8 Open and maintain a bankaccount for the chapter with aminimum of two (2) signingofficers.

22.9 Membership fees are paiddirectly to the National office.

22.10 A one-time one-year zeropercent (0%) loan may beavailable to a local group forchapter formation uponapplication to the NationalExecutive.

22.11 Plan a minimum of four (4)education hours per year forthe membership in its area.Notification to be sent to therespective members a mini-mum of 14 days prior to theevent.

22.12 An annual financial report tobe submitted to the NationalTreasurer by February 15th.

22.13 All chapters should be availablefor audits at the request of theNational Treasurer.

23.0 A CHAPTER MAY BEREVOKED FOR THEFOLLOWING

23.1 At the request of the chapter.23.2 Failure to have ten (10) active

members. (Until such timethat there is one (1) chapter ineach province this minimumnumber may be waived)

23.3 Repetitive failure to respond tocommunication requests.

23.4 Failure to meet the minimumof four (4) education hours peryear for the membership in itsarea.

23.5 Failure to assume respon-sibility for its actions and tocomply with CSGNA bylaws.

23.6 The chapters President willreport to the CSGNA NationalExecutive any Chapter havingserious internal problems orfailure to meet charterrequirements.

23.7 Chapter President will reportany problems to the RegionalDirector.

23.8 The Regional Director willmake arrangements for thechapter and its executive tomeet with the CSGNAPresident or a member of theCSGNA National Executivefor the purpose of evaluatingthe problems.

23.9 The results of this meeting willbe presented to the NationalExecutive at the next regularlyscheduled executive meeting.

23.10 The CSGNA National Exec-utive will determine theoutcome for the Chapter.A probationary period oftwelve (12) months may begranted to comply with charterrequirements.A chapter may also belong toits Provincial Nurses Asso-ciation provided there is noconflict of interests with theCSGNA.

24.0 CHANGING CHAPTERNAME

24.1 A chapter may change its nameif the majority (51%) ofchapter members vote infavour.

24.2 Following the chapter adopt-ing a new name the presidentof CSGNA must be informedwithin thirty (30) days.

25.0 DISSOLUTION OF ACHAPTER

25.1 In the event of dissolution, thechapter executive, after pay-ment of or making provisionsfor the payment of allliabilities, shall dispose of theassets of the chapter byforwarding the asset to theCSGNA National Executive

25.2 In the event of dissolution ofthe Society, after payment ofor making provisions forpayment of all liabilities, shalldispose of the assets to one ormore Canadian non-profitAssociation with similaractivities to the CSGNA. (i.e.AORN, ERN, or GeriatricNurses Association.)

26.0 AMENDMENTS26.1 Active Members may submit

recommendation for amend-ments to these bylaws to theChair of the Bylaws Com-mittee no later than 180 daysprior to the Annual BusinessMeeting. All recommen-dations will be reviewed.Recommendations inconsis-tent with or contrary to thecurrent Bylaws or the goals andobjectives of the CSGNA willbe returned to the member.

26.2 Members shall be notified ofthe proposed amendments inwriting, to be included withthe information of the annualmeeting.

26.3 Vote shall be by mail to bereceived by the committeechair not later than 60 daysprior to the Annual Business

Leslie:This years meeting was great. I have been

to 10 CSGNA’s and I am always amazed at

how they seem to be getting better each year.

The new format, first used in Toronto in

2003, where all companies are invited to at-

tend the evening social events is great. I think

good progress was made this year on identi-

fying CSGNA’s future education support re-

quirements and the necessity for vendor

support on this imitative. I look forward to

seeing everyone at the World Congress of

Gastroenterology next year in Montreal.

It’s a little difficult to say that this year’s Annual CSGNAmeeting was a complete success. I was, after all, the ob-ject of much humiliation and laughter having been draggedup on stage between two rather unusual looking “cowboys”and having a cow udder of all things strapped about mywaste!!

So I guess from my perspective, aside from THAT, itwas a complete success!!

The CSGNA continues to thrive and flourish and thisyear’s meeting was no exception. As a vendor, at these meet-ings we often look at our “return on investment” – some-times a little too much! But in this case, this year, the returnwas very apparent. It was great to see so many participants,having such a great time.

The CSGNA Executive is to be congratulated on rec-ognizing that this meeting serves a variety of purposes. Oneof those purposes is to allow you (the member) to spendtime with us (the vendor) – which you did – in abundance!Believe it or not, at some meetings this can be the lowestpriority for the organizers, and in the end can negativelyimpact the overall success.

In addition, and perhaps more importantly, the feed-back I received from many of the members was that theeducation and courses were informative and useful. Again– this isn’t easy to pull together year after year, so the or-ganizers are to be congratulated.

We, as vendors, look forward to becoming more in-volved in the planning of this meeting and appreciate theinvitation that has been extended to do so. I trust this willadd some new ideas and add value for all stakeholders.

Perhaps my favorite part of the weekend was watchingLorie McGeough run around busting criminals in the men’swashrooms. “I’m Lorie McGeogh – tough on crime!”. Thatwill stick with all of us for some time to come!

The award will go to aperson who has made a significant con-tribution to GI advancement and edu-cation in her/his hospital orcommunity.

In order to encourage applicantsfrom all parts of Canada, each CSGNAChapter will be asked to submit onequalified candidate for the SciCan Edu-cational Scholarship. The choice ofwhich candidate to submit rests witheach Chapter. The application shouldconsist of a one-page description of thecandidate’s contributions to endoscopyin the region. All other selection crite-

ria that pertain to CSGNA educationalawards apply. Applications should besent to the Education Director of theCSGNA by May 31st of each year.

Choosing a winner from amongthe seventeen candidates will not be aneasy task! We expect that the calibre ofapplicants will be very high, and nei-ther SciCan nor the CSGNA executivebelieves that they we should stand injudgment of the applicants and deemthat one is more deserving than theothers. Therefore, assuming that theseventeen candidates all meet the cri-teria, a draw will be made for the win-ner. That person will be announced inthe June/ July issue of The GuidingLight and will be presented a com-memorative plaque at the CSGNA an-nual meeting. The winner’s name andphotograph will also be published onSciCan’s website.

The inaugural SciCan EducationalScholarship will be awarded to attendthe World Congress in Montreal in Sept2005. Applications for this scholarshipare due May 31, 2005.
