What’s InsideResident Directors Contact Teams Winter Mini-Semester Encounter

Jesse SwitzerStudent Body President

My name is Jesse and I am in my junior year at Eston College. It intrigues me more and more each year that I spend here how much transformation has taken place in my life and in the lives of those around me. We all grow at different paces as we arrive here from different places and we come with a multitude of expectations.

Growth, I fi nd, is particularly mysterious. The Holy Spirit supplies an excellent source of fertilizer, top of the line tools and instruments, and some of the best gardeners I know, yet the timing and direction of how He causes germination, blooming, sprouting – growing, the alignment of the weather and seasons never ceases to amaze me.

It is imperative to grasp the dependency each one of us has upon the Lord. And it is my desire that, as a student body, we become increasingly aware of our weaknesses each day. Our victory comes not by the work of our own hands (or understanding) but by the work of the Holy Spirit who convinces us of our sins and empowers us to continue on.

I believe that placing our focus and fi nding our dependency on Christ will further equip us to be His disciples in our daily lives. Without our need to lean upon God for this life, we begin to fi nd our own ambitions as superior to His. Without the knowledge that Jesus is the cornerstone we would wallow in self, never being able to accomplish perfection on our own.

To see developing disciples of Christ around me is my foremost desire. I want to see my friends going to bed early in order to fi nd time in the mornings to spend with God. I want to hear them talking about the things they learn in class, when class is out, because the material is applicable to them throughout the day. I want to see people pray for one another when they’re not told to. I want to hear stories from the Bible from the mouths of my brothers and sisters. I want to see a friend helping a friend with their homework. I want to see students jumping at the chance to carry groceries, shovel walks, and clean up the town. And do not be mistaken – I have begun to witness some of these things but to see them even more is my desire.

I must say, however, that I am blessed to be here. Unlike my last two years at Eston College, this year has proven to be fruitful beyond expectation. There is a strong focus on prayer and it inspires me to see the excitement among us students as we pursue godliness. I know that as we seek God, his desires become our own and we begin to see all of creation through His eyes.

Katy Haydon - Ladies RDThis year as I lead the women of Eston College, I want it to be a year where we intentionally go deeper with Christ through our studies, and through community. I want to see our students mature in their faith, and to fi nd a strong foundation in Christ as they study here. Throughout this year I personally want to learn about what it means to disciple those around me, and what it means to love people as Christ loves us.

Clayton Gilmer - Mens RDIt is my privilege this year to be a leader in the very place that God has formed in me many leadership characteristics. I know the LORD is in the business of transforming lives and as people seek Him through the word and prayer, they will be transformed. It is my goal to help people be drawn into the presence of God allowing His will to be done in our lives.

Resident Directors/Resident Assistants

Opening ServicesSeptember 10-11, 2010At the start of each year students come with excitement to meet new and old friends, anticipation for learning and spiritual development, as well as apprehension about living with a roommate. The fi rst week is quite a buzz – orientation, the beginning of mini-semester, outing to the hills and our Opening Services. This year we were blessed to have Daniel Zopoula as our keynote speaker. Daniel and his wife Sarah (both alumni) currently reside in Lethbridge, AB. Daniel who was born in Burkina Faso, is the founder of Bridges of Hope which exists to promote poverty relief and community empowerment within the poorest nations of the world. In a world where people often function independently, Daniel challenged us to fully understand the reality of God and His desire for us to live dependently on Him and in relationship with others, using our spiritual gifts in everyday life. For many students who come unaware of this dynamic this was a great way to start off the year, igniting a passion in them to discover their gifts. To listen to the opening services or other chapels, check the News and Events Section on our website.

This, then, is how you ought to regard us: as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the mysteries God has revealed.

- 1 Corinthians 4:1 (NIV)

In September we had a gorgeous weekend with lots of sunshine, beautiful fall colors and the opportunity to be outside and enjoy God’s creation. The weekend was topped off by having over 40 alumni join us. The weekend kicked off with chapel and Bob Stone as speaker. Saturday was a fabulous day for the golf tournament (and prizes for all who participated) and later an outing to the hills. It was a special time of gathering together of old and new students sharing together of God’s faithfulness, worshiping and praying together. The evening ended with an auction of alumni donated items. Who would have thought a Magic Bullet (food processor) would be such a desired item! On Sunday Alan Mortensen spoke in the morning service and lead us in communion at lunch. As he walked us through what that last supper would have been like the sacrifi ce of Christ was again made so real. Communion can become such a ritual; what a wonderful reminder we were given. Thank you to all who contributed to making the weekend such a great success. Hope to see you at the next one.

Alumni WeekendACOP Leadership Retreat

From November 8-10, I had the privilege of attending the ACOP Leadership Retreat. In addition to our assumptions about how and why we ‘do’ church being put to the test, we were challenged and encouraged to step out boldly in the ministries God has given us. It was a wonderful time to connect with one another and to meet many (but surely not all) of the emerging leaders from within the fellowship. Being a young man myself, it was wonderful to make friends with and hear the stories of others who fi nd they are taking on new responsibilities and stepping out into the Lord’s calling. Although there was much talk about the church and the pastorate, the role of the College in the ACOP was also, I felt, implicitly and positively addressed. We discussed how we serve our students and the nature of our relationship with the fellowship. With new insight in hand, I look forward to revisiting many of the processes we have in place at the school to ensure that we are providing our students with the best possible training for life after college. In sum, the retreat both reinforced the family and relational aspects of the ACOP and called all those in attendance to a life

of intentional and disciplined servant leadership. I look forward to seeing how this time will strengthen the mission of both the fellowship and the College as we work together in and for the Kingdom of God.

GNS 316: ACOP History and Thought (Instructor—Wes Mills) January 17-21 ONLYThis course gives insight into the historic and theological development of the Apostolic Church of Pentecost of Canada (ACOP). It serves as an introduction and orientation to the philosophy of ministry, vision, mission, core values and doctrines of the fellowship. Students will become acquainted with the men and women who pioneered this fellowship and be inspired by their stories of faith and transformation by the power of the Holy Spirit. Completion of this course is part of the new requirements for becoming a credentialed

member of the ACOP.

BTH 345: Acts (Instructors—Dr. Cherith Fee-Nordling and Rev’d Dr. Dean Pinter)The Acts of the Apostles is one of the most exciting books in the Bible. It is part two of the drama of God at work in the world through his Son Jesus that began in the Gospel of Luke. In Luke, the Spirit brings about the birth of the Saviour, Jesus Christ; in Acts, the Spirit brings about the birth of the salvation community, the Church. In Luke, Jesus welcomes the outcast and marginalised and gathers them to himself; in Acts, Jesus’ followers are led by the Spirit into the world to gather all humanity under the name of the risen Messiah. In Luke, Jesus’ life is characterized by an obedience shaped by the reality of the cross; in Acts, the people of God are called to live a cruciform obedience in the power of the Spirit. This course will explore these rich themes in Acts and seek to fi nd Spirit led markers so that we may continue to follow “the Way” of Jesus today.

GNS 165: English Literature for Beginners (Instructor—Cheryl Hughes)This introduction to English Literature at a University level will include basic writing and research skills. Knowledge of English literature will allow the student to apply biblical knowledge to literature which is written in both Christian and non-Christian tradition, and develop insight into the ways in which creative writers have explored and explained their work.

PRM 350: Ignite: Communicating the Word of God for Life Transformation (Instructor—Rob Parkman)January 10-14 ONLYBe prepared to have your passion for the word of God and for communicating dynamic messages ignited! Learn to work in partnership with the Holy Spirit to see life transformation in hearers. Become skilled at message development, effective communication techniques, connecting with your audience and the use of illustrations. Speakers at all levels of development will benefi t from the course and gain the ability to present more interesting and compelling talks. While the content is geared towards biblical preaching, students will fi nd that many of the skills are transferable to the marketplace context.

PRM 280: Youth Ministry (Instructors—Steve Atkins and Jodi Hartung)This course centers on the practical realities of doing day to day, week to week ministry with adolescents. It will focus on the nuts and bolts of youth ministry, including organizational structure, effective communication to adolescents, leading a volunteer team, planning activities, and more. Although the emphasis will be on local church ministry, the majority of material will be transferable into various para-church ministry contexts as well.

Ministry IncentiveThis past summer we offered a discount in tuition and fees to students who would volunteer 80 hours of service with a Christian organization. Many students desire to be involved in ministry over the summer however, this can mean a lower wage and increasing student loan debt. With the incentive students had the opportunity to minister in many ways. Some of the involvements chosen by students were mission trips, camps, Street Invaders, VBS and youth groups. We had some concerns that by offering a discount we would be decreasing our income. We are very excited to report that instead we increased our income by signifi cantly increasing our student population (an increase of 12%). According to our registration survey we had 15 students state that the discount signifi cantly affected their decision to come and another 15 say that it was part of their decision. We will be offering an incentive again this coming summer. At Eston College we strongly believe that that every person should have a minimum of one year of bible education. With the cost of education rising across the country it is becoming diffi cult for students to make that investment. Autumn Johnston is a student who made the decision to return.

Nearing the end of my fi rst year and contemplating a second, my mind was swirling with thoughts of how to fund my education. I was also chosen to go on a World Action Team (WAT) to El Salvador. Where was I to get all this money? It was neat to see how God pulled it all together. When the college announced the fi nancial incentive for volunteering and that my WAT trip would qualify, it made me want to come back to college even more. The opportunity to do ministry was one of the most amazing things I have been involved in. It has opened my eyes to the passions and dreams that I have and the potential call to missions. Originally only wanting to stay for one year and fi nding out my tuition was going to be reduced by serving others, defi nitely affected my decision to return.

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ,

God is good and we have so many reasons to be thankful. The beginning of this year has been wonderful. There is a strong sense of the presence of God and a desire to live obediently unto Him. We are seeing people healed and transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit and all of this is creating an even greater hunger for righteousness. There is a strong emphasis on spending time in the word of God and prayer and this is translating into changed lives.

We deeply appreciate the participation of all who have been so faithful throughout our history. While we know that God is our provider, we are well aware that He leads His people to generously give so that His will might be fulfi lled. Giving requires sacrifi ce and we are grateful that so many of you live sacrifi cially. In addition to your fi nances, you have lavished upon us your encouragement and prayers. Thank you!

Some are inquiring about the fi nancial situation of the Bible College. First let me update you on the response we received to our Matching Gifts Campaign and our plea for help at the end of the summer 2010. During the months of July and August, $99,416.33 were contributed and this amount enabled us to end the year well. This was not only remarkable but it was also a huge boost to our morale. Though we have balanced our budget at year end, our ongoing challenge is the debt we have been carrying for a number of years.

To provide a better understanding of our existing situation we have created the following summary which outlines both our indebtedness as of August 31, 2010 (our fi scal year end) and our 2010-11 projected revenue and expense. The summary refl ects a substantial reduction in spending over previous years and it was created with the belief that we could increase our enrolment and our donations. Our hopes for the future are to restore salaries in September 2011 to what they were before budget cuts, to eliminate our Line of Credit over the next 3 years, and to have some surplus to make the necessary changes to our existing facilities.

September 1, 2010 to August 31, 2011 CIBC Line of Credit ($127,886.00)Budgeted Revenue: $1,261,725.00 Building Mortgage (Dorm 5 since 1974) ($127,390.00) Budgeted Expense: $1,250,043.00 Roof Repair Loan (December, 2009) ($63,770.00) Total Indebtedness as of August 31, 2010 ($319,046.00)-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------We are aware that there will always be challenges in life and that ours are not unique. Statistics reveal that most charitable organizations face fi nancial diffi culties at some point of their existence. Still our prayer is that we would fi nd the resources necessary to move forward as we believe God would have us do. We are committed to trust Him as He has never failed us. If you have thoughts that you would like to share with us, please contact us as we would be delighted to hear from you.

In His service,Brian Fuller and the Eston College team

Teams last year went to El Salvador, California, and Japan. One amazing story of God’s faithfulness comes from one of the students on the El Salvador team:

As I think back on my trip to El Salvador I often refl ect on how much I learnt about the life of a missionary as well as about their culture. God used this trip to impact the lives of all the members of the team, but he did not stop there. Through our team going there, he changed the life of many El Salvadorians. One story I would like to focus on is about a girl named Lupita. She was in her early twenties and had a desire to become a nurse, but because of a lack of fi nances she had no choice but to give up this dream. As she told us this story, through a translator, she began weeping. Our entire team was impacted by her story, especially when we were told that nursing school costed only $100 a month. After I returned home from this trip I wrote thank you letters to all of those who had supported me and I included Lupita’s story within the letter. A man who read her story was also impacted by it and decided to sponsor her to go to school. She is now in school, living her dream of becoming a nurse. Whenever I think of this story, I am in awe as I think of how God works. He used our WAT team from Eston College to connect this man and Lupita together, to help her fulfi ll her dream. Not only did God change the life of Lupita, but also her family, her future family, and all of those people whom she will help. What an amazing God we serve!

GoDiscipleship

We are excited to report that GoDiscipleship is growing. Last year we had 5 students, this semester 7 and interest from more for next semester. This year we are returning to Winnipeg and Cross Lake to work with the impoverished and First Nations. As well we will continue to work with churches and community involvements. New to the students will be the opportunity to minister at the Regina Correctional Center. Though the name GoDiscipleship is new to many people the focus is not new to Eston College. For over 65 years we have been training young people for ministry. Please pray for these students as they travel throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. If you would like to provide an opportunity for our students to serve and train please let us know.
