You shall love the LORD your God

with all your heart, and with all your soul, and

with all your might. Keep these words that I

am commanding you today in your heart. Re-

cite them to your children and talk about them

when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down

and when you rise. Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an

emblem on your forehead, and write them on the doorposts of your

house and on your gates. (Deuteronomy 6:5-9)

In June 2010, the Pew Forum conducted a survey of 3,412

Americans age 18 and older to determine their religious knowledge.

Although our laws guarantee freedom of religion and many faiths

flourish here, America is still the most Christian country in theworld. A majority of Americans claim to attend Christian worship

services at least once a week and to pray daily.

And yet, the Pew study shows that Christians are woefully

ignorant of the Bible they claim to read and the God they claim to

worship. Almost half of those surveyed believe that the Golden

Rule is one of the 10 commandments. Less than half can name the 4

Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John). As one author says, the Bi-

ble in America is the greatest story never read.

In light of these results, the crucial question is: What differ-ence does it make? Why should we care whether Christians read the

Bible or understand the basic tenets of their faith? Stephen Prothero,

professor and author of religious studies books, would say it matters

because religious literacy is required to be good citizens of the US

and of the world. Because world religions af-

fect governments and politics, not knowing

about or understanding religions makes the

world a more dangerous place. I agree with

Prothero, but thats not why I think Christianliteracy is important.

The more we read the Bible and other

works of faith, the more we discuss spiritual

and religious matters, the more we understand

our traditions, the deeper these things mean.

How do we make meaning of our lives?

Through our relationship with God. That fun-

damental relationship colors and infuses all

other relationships and provides meaning toour actions and the actions of those around us.

The more we explore our relationship with

God, the deeper the meaning in our lives.

We dont do this alone, of course.

Learning about our faith and our past is best

done in community, in the gathered body of

Christ. Our parish community is a safe place

for questions, wonderings, and doubts. As we

are reminded on All Saints Sunday

(November 7), we have been preceded by

thousands of generations of believers who have

fought the good fight, who have finished the

race, who have kept the faith. Let us honor the

saints, this great cloud of witnesses, through a

    faith that seeks understanding.

    Lectio Divina

    St. Timothys Church, Creve Coeur

    November 3December 1

The ancient practice of lectio divina is read-

ing gods word more with the heart than the head.

Lectio divina, (literally holy reading) begins with

cultivating the ability to listen deeply, to hear with

the ear of our hearts the words of Holy Scripture. In

this contemplative way we can discover an increasing

ability to offer more of ourselves and lives to God.

Using the readings for the coming Sunday,

The Rev. Susan Skinner will facilitate a group in the

practice of lectio divina for five sessions as we ap-

proach and enter the Advent season. The group will

meet on Wednesday mornings from 11:00 a.m. to

noon at St. Timothys Church, 808 North Mason

Road, Creve Coeur, 63141, beginning November 3

and continuing through December 1. A $10 registra-

tion fee covers the cost of materials and may be

brought to the first session. Sign up by calling 314-753-7911 or e-mail [email protected].

    Advent Lessons & Carols

Sunday, December 5, at 6 p.m. at Christ

Church Cathedral is the celebration of Advent Les-

sons and Carols. Please come support the St. Fran-

cis choir as we sing the season.

EvensongSunday, December 12, join us at 7 p.m. at the

Lodge for a beautiful service of Evensong, which is

Evening Prayer, sung and chanted rather than spoken.

The choir will sing special music. This brief service

provides a soothing respite during a busy season.

Come at 6 p.m. and bring a dish to share. Well have

a potluck supper before the service.

    Annual Performance Appraisals

you would like communicated to me about my

work. Also, please know that I value your di-

rect feedback at all times. If you ever have any

concerns, critiques, or questions, do not hesitate

to call or come in and talk to me. --Pastor

the dates for Bishops Committee meetings for the

    remainder of 2010:

    November 21 December 19

    Highlights from the October Bishops

Committee MeetingThe Bishops Committee met fol-

lowing Adult Forum on Sunday, October 24.

We received a response from our landlord,

Mrs. Butler, to the letter we sent, formalizing a

conversation that Mrs. Butler and Pastor Sally had.

Mrs. Butler has indeed agreed to allow us to put a

different lock on the Community Room and to

open it for use by various groups. Mrs. Butler sug-

gests (and we concur) that any interior modifica-tionssuch as electrical or plumbing changes

should be inspected by the City of Eureka.

A Nominating Committee of the outgoing

Bishops Committee members has been formed to

develop a slate of Bishops Committee candidates

for the January 23, 2011 annual meeting.

There will be an open house and blessing

of the parish house on Saturday., November 27

from 5-7 p.m. This coincides with the

Candlelight Walk. The Eureka tree lighting is

    Nov 27 at 6 p.m.

See related articles in this Chalice about

the Lodge cleaning on November 20, the $250

check from Assured Automotive, and BCPs/

Bishops Committee NewsHymnals from St. Clair.

We will plan on a ministry fair, show-

casing the work of each committee, for Febru-

    ary 2011.

The financial results continue to be

much better than predicted at the beginning of

2010. We expected to be $13,565 in deficit

by the end of September. Instead, we were

    only $1,142 in deficit.

    Nominating Committee

A nominating committee of the outgo-

ing Bishop Committee members is being

formed to develop a slate of candidates for

Bishops Committee that will be voted on at

the January 23, 2011 annual meeting.

    If you:

    1) are baptized and at least 18 years

    old, and

    2) attend Sunday worship regularly,

    and

    3) support St. Francis with financial

    contributions,

youre eligible to serve on the Bishops Com-

    mittee.

If you are interested in serving, please

    contact Pastor Sally. Bishops Committee

meetings are the 4th Sunday of each month,

following Adult Forum. They are interesting,

lively, and laughter-filled meetings. We need

your leadership, so please consider serving.

    Pet Blessing Results

The weather was uncooperative for our pet blessing on Saturday,

October 2. But we had a good time anyway. We conducted four worshipservices, blessing dogs, a sugar glider, a horse,

    and a grasshopper.

Thanks to Debbie Pizzella and her tire-

less team, the gift baskets, soy candles, and raf-

fles brought in significant dollars for St. Fran-

cis mission work. All the bills arent in yet,

but it appears that revenue ex-

    ceeded expenses by approxi-

mate $1,000. When all the in-come and expenses have been

accounted for in the next cou-

ple of weeks, a final tally will

be published in the weekly an-

    nouncements insert.

    Befriending Women of the Bible

On October 16 over 30 women from Epis-

copal (and other Christian) churches gathered at St.

Matthews Warson Woods for a day of reflection

and conversation about women of the Bible. They

heard brief commentaries from four clergy women,

including Pastor Sally. If you wanted to go but

missed it, plan on it for next year. The day is a

peaceful opportunity for women to gather, explore,

    and be refreshed.

Have you have been able to catch a per-

formance by our very talented Alex Branch-

field? The smooth jazz stylings of young gui-

tarist Alex Branchfield were displayed most re-

cently in performances at the Eureka Wine

House on the 23rd and 30th of October.

We will try to keep track of Alexs future

    performances.

    Book Signing

A $250 Gift from Assured Automotive

Tim Phillips, owner of Assured Automo-

tive on 5thStreet in Eureka, gave St. Francis a

check for $250 to the Vicars discretionary fund.

Tim said that he was giving $250 to each minis-

ter in Eureka, so that clergy could address some

of the needs of the community.

The Vicars discretionary fund is used

exclusively to address emergency pastoral needs,

such as helping people pay for medicine, food, utility bills, or to purchase gas for their car. The

needs always exceed the money available.

Were grateful to Tim for his generosity.

Tim Phillips gracious gift is a reminder of

    Gods unexpected and innumerable blessings.

Unexpected Gifts!! New Hymnals and Prayer BooksYears ago the Episcopal Church in St.

Clair closed. Recently the new owner of the

building called St. Francis and asked if wewould like the copies of theBook of

    Common Prayer and the

    hymnals left there.

    We now have 55 prayer

    books and 50 hym

that are in excel- lent con-

    dition. These books are

at the Lodge and in the par- ish house.

The new owner is converting the formerchurch into a shelter for children who have been

temporarily taken from their parents. So the

building will continue to be used for Gods

work, serving as a haven of grace.

Its not how much of my money willI give to God, but how much of

Gods money will I keep for myself.-- Oswald Smith

Out of Town and Need a Priest?

Some time ago I received a phone call from a

woman in St. Lukes Hospital. She said she was

from New Jersey, was having a medical operation

that day, and needed an Episcopal priest. While this

isnt an unheard of request, planning ahead is a good

    idea.

    If youre scheduled to travel

to another city to have an operation,

please let me know. I can arrange

for a priest of that Diocese to visit

you while youre in the hospital. And if you find yourself in another

city in a hospital unexpectedly need-

ing a priest, please call me. I will

arrange for a visit from an Episcopal priest in that

    location.
